I recently bought a new Windows 8.1 computer to replace my old 8.1 laptop. I was going to use Windows Easy Transfer to transfer all my settings and files, but I accidentally (on my old computer) clicked "This is my new computer" and I cannot change it to old.

I do the same thing every time and sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't... very frustrating! Installed the latest 8.1.1 on a new machine and tried to use the Easy Windows Backup to restore my stuff, but I get this message "Windows Easy Transfer can't transfer files from Windows Vista or Windows XP".
Is there any way I can recover my files from the Easy Transfer Backup?
I'm trying to use Windows Easy Transfer to rename my user profile and change the folder name to match however in Windows 8.1 that feature seems to be missing. How would I backup my files like I did in 8.1 and restore it to a user account?

It appears the transfer files and settings is missing from windows 8.1, I don't use the so called Cloud, so I would guess the only way to move my Windows 8.1 installation to a new hard drive is to use the backup image app, or use a backup program. How to make it easier to move to a new hard drive in case of failure.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI had a Windows 8 machine & upgraded to 8.1 before I found out all the sneaky underhanded sleazy things Microsoft did. In particular pulling the useful (and in my case necessary) 'Easy Transfer' tool that was *on my machine* in Windows 8 and replacing it with a something completely useless to me and calling the same thing which it isn't.
So I'm wondering if the Windows 8 Easy Transfer is available for download somewhere and hoping it will work under Windows 8.1.
It doesn't look like the Windows 8.1 upgrade keeps any of the Windows 8 stuff in case you change your mind and want to go back, which is starting to look like a really good idea.
It's a brand-name pre-installed thing so no Widows 8 media, just a recovery partition so I can return the machine to factory with Windows 8 or even go to an OEM Windows 7 (alas no drivers). Rather odious at this point, but may be my only option.
Unless maybe there's a way to pull the Win 8 files from what's on the recovery partition (*.swm files) .
I have recently found a Windows Easy Transfer file on a USB Stick. It was created by Christmas time, it is before the computer (Hard Drive) broke. So, I luckily found this on USB Stick in one of my drawers from last Christmas.
Now I am currently have a new tower PC which it has Windows 8.1 in it and it works fine. Just that my old tower has been upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 8.1 (trial) for a while from October 2013.
But, I can't remember what the password was - so I am struggling to know what the password was. I am just worried that I cannot reset the password on the Windows Easy Transfer, it has all of my lovely photos and videos and also my work documents. The thing is that I cannot get access to the old PC, because it is gone. But, I have got my stuff in my Windows Easy Transfer file - just that I can't remember the password.
Is there a way to get to my password out by doing something?

By using the Customize feature of Windows Easy Transfer Wizard, I created a MIG transfer file, without selecting the user folders (such as Documents, Pictures or Video).
If the MIG file is copied to the C: drive, will the User Profile be created on the C: drive, when Easy Transfer is run?
I am guessing that the default User Folders will be created on the C drive, and then the locations can be changed to match the present physical location on my other partitions.

View 9 Replies View RelatedMy Windows 8.1 installation started developing some problems including malware. So I decided to reinstall Windows, but in order to make it without a hurry, I used a separate disk. This way I could use the old installation for everyday work until the new installation was ready for the switchover. But, I didn't have a spare SATA hard disk to start with, so I decided to use an old IDE hard disk.
My motherboard Asus P8H61 doesn't have an onboard IDE controller, so I used a Logilink IDE/SATA PCI-E card (JMicron JMB36X chipset) to connect the disk. I then managed to transfer some data to other places and freed a spare 500GB SATA disk so I could clone the installation since the old IDE disk was only 120GB. I used Acronis True Image 2014 and did an "As is" clone to make sure that the transfer would be successful and bootable. I would later extend the partition to take all the available space. So far so good.
The problem is that the disk works only connected on the Logilink card (JMicron JMB36X controller) and not when connected onboard (Intel controller). I attempted to repair Windows startup using the DVD-ROM but didn't manage to start Windows successfully, unless I connect the disk on the card. I wouldn't mind too much about it, but the card sometimes blocks when there are too many programs open increasing disk access freezing the system and I have to reset the computer. Not really convenient.
So what can I do to make the installation usable on the onboard Intel controller? Is there any workaround? Of course I would like to avoid reinstalling everything and waste a week's effort!
I just bought SSD. Is there anyway to transfer the OS from the HDD to the SSD without being needed to reinstall the windows back? The HDD that I install my windows has 3 partition , C (where window were install), E and F in it. It is possible to keep the other 2 partition (E and F)? View 6 Replies View RelatedI bought a laptop, specifically the Samsung QX410-J01. The Laptop came pre-installed with Windows 7, and I upgraded to Windows 8 on 10/26/2012. I bought the Windows 8 Pro product key, downloaded, and upgraded to Windows 8.
Just last week my laptops Motherboard failed and my computer would no longer start up. The HDD works just fine though so all my files are safe. I decided I wanted to build my own PC and I am simply waiting on my case to arrive.
My question is I want to use Windows 8 on my new PC. The problem I am facing is I do not know how I am going to install Windows on my new machine. I do not want to purchase a new install disk and license since I have already paid for the OS. I can only think of two options and I am not sure if either of them are right.
1. Plug in my laptops hard drive into the new desktop. Run Windows 8.1 on that and use the new Terabyte hard drive I bought as a second hard drive.
2. Somehow put Windows 8.1 on a flash drive and install it from the flash drive onto the new blank hard drive. Then use the product key that I had purchased to activate the OS onto the new hard drive!
I really do not want to have to purchase Windows again, but if I must I guess I will. I believe there has to be a way I doubt after being a loyal Microsoft customer, switching to Windows Phone recently, and buying an Xbox One, that Microsoft will just say "Too bad, buy it again".
The computer I am using is a Dell Inspiron M5040 laptop.
I got a Samsung 840 Pro Series SSD to replace my HDD, and used the Samsung Software that came with it to image my OS over to the SSD. It had an error at first, so I removed my antivirus program and ran it again, and it worked.
Everything works pretty much the same, except for noticeable differences in search and Internet webpage access.
If I search in Explorer, the searches are fast and prompt. But if I search with the regular search charm ( WIN+S ), searches are more than 7x slower than on the previous HDD. Also, webpages a quick to load on different computers (not the internet speed, in other words). But this computer had slow loads, and now the loading is even slower on the new SSD.
Things I've tried:
Multiple SFC scans - all say there is some files that could not be fixed All windows updates installed enabled Trimm, updated SSD firmware, ran Windows SSD optimization, optimized computer for SSD use Reset Internet Explorer Rebuilt index
I'm thinking of ditching this slower laptop in favor of something... anything nearby. Regretting either imaging to another drive, or using Samsung to do it.
How I could go about doing this. Last year I bought a Windows 8 Pro upgrade disc we used to upgrade our machines from Windows 7 home Premium to 8 Pro. Is it possible for me to use that same upgrade product key for Windows 8 Pro on 8.1 so I could have a Pro version of 8.1? The computer I originally did the upgrade on I am no longer using and is there a way to deactivate the license on that one so it could be used on the new computer I bought? Also I just want the extra's of the Pro version so does it matter it is the license for Windows 8 even though the new computer uses 8.1?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI was working on a windows 8 laptop and wanted to transfer user files to the new laptop. I pulled the drive from the Windows 8 laptop, plugged it into an open sata port on my windows 7 bench machine (which already contained the files to be transferred) and booted without problem. I assigned the windows 8 drive a letter and opened the drive. All the files of the Windows 8 drive were visible. I opened a directory off of the root, created a new directory and copied the files. No problem. I opened some of the image files and all looked well. I shut down the win7 box, pulled the Windows 8 drive and put it back in the laptop and it booted, no problem.
When I went looking for the files, they were no where to be found! Win 8 showed the "used space" as if the copy never happened. Thinking I made an error on the copy I shut down the Windows 8 laptop and pulled the drive, plugged it back into the win7 box and booted. The win7 boot detected "file corruption" on the volume in question and did some "orphan" recovering and a bunch of other stuff. When it finally finished and booted all the files copied were in a "found.000" directory. I took ownership and repeated. Funny thing is that while the win7 showed the drive with the expected 40gb of data taking up space, the windows 8 showed the "used space" as if the data wasnt even there? why as I try to copy the files from the win7 drive converted to a usb external directly into the Windows 8 laptop.
I plan to buy a new computer using win 8.1 I currently have a computer using win 8.1 I want to transfer my files from the old one to the new one. Win 8.1 does not have easy transfer so how can I do this. Is there a way to use an external hard drive?

Detail: Need to transfer file from CD to Win8.1 tablet. Steps tried:
-extracted files from CD to .SFX archive and added a copy to PC and Tablet (android4.4)
-tried over cloud, cloud upload failed and retried multiple times for same result.
-tried direct file transfer from pc to WinTablet and from AndroidTablet to WinTablet with the appropriate cables, both times neither device detected the other
-tried file transfer over homegroup, gave error message about "access denied" even after giving access on both devices
-tried email but .sfx was too large (almost 800MB)
-tried over Bluetooth on both devices (PC and android) again transfer failed
-tried over WiFi connection, failed access denied
-tried over Ethernet cable but only PC has Ethernet port.
I am totally unhappy about windows 8. Many good features from earlier windows are missing such as -
1) You can not pin "Calculator" to the task bar. In earlier versions you could open the calculator, over other windows.
2) While scrolling to folders / files in Explorer or any software, the screen jumps abruptly to up or down.
3) While transferring Images from camera. You can not select part images for transfer along with renaming. This feature was available in Windows XP.
I don't understand this at all. Why did they take away this VERY important function? You can no longer drag and drop pictures to and from dropbox to a folder on your computer! This is so aggravating that I feel like throwing my computer in the trash. I cannot use skydrive. It won't link to it and it won't let me transfer files to another location on my computer.
There is a "pictures" folder but it refuses to let me transfer files from skydrive or dropbox! This is extremely aggravating when trying to backup four years of vacation pictures. It also disables the drag and drop function from ANYTHING else: CDs, USB drives, hard drives. I'm so angry now that I might consider buying a used computer just to transfer the files.
I have been trying (without success) to transfer my e-mail folder files from my old computer (Dell Inspiron 530 using Vista) to my new computer (Sony Vaio using Windows 8). The transfer is from Windows Mail to Windows Live Mail.
The recommended method on the old machine using a flash drive is as follows: File-Export-Messages-Microsoft Windows Mail-Select Folder (K:New Folder)-Next-Select Folders-Next.
At this point the folders should transfer to the flash drive. Unfortunately I keep getting and error message that says that "Export did complete successfully and Windows Mail was unable to export all messages" - (in fact only a few messages were transferred) The message then goes onto say that " your disk may not have enough space (it is a 32GB flash drive and has more than enough space!) or that some messages may be corrupted. Run disk clean-up or delete some files and try again". I have done this without improvement.
Another approach that was recommended was to find all of the e-mail files (.eml files) and copy them to the new computer via the flash drive. I can copy them to the flash drive without problem but am not sure how/where to import them into the C: drive of the new computer.

I would like to transfer my programs and files from the dual core to the quad core. However, obviously the quad core has different hardware.
I am wondering if I simply remove the SSD from the dual core and put it into the quad core (replacing the quad's primary hard drive with the SSD) and simply boot up the quad core, would that be sufficient? Will the quad core recognize the hardware mismatch and automatically correct the drivers, while keeping my programs and files?
Or is there some other, efficient way to make the transfer?

I tested it in crystal mark and HD tune and they both give the hard drive 150 MB's Read /write. This is EXTREMEMLY annoying for network transfers as well since I can get 250 MB's R / W out of a server from NIC teaming. How can I set it to use 100% for file transfer?
