Today's Windows 8 update (from patch Tuesday this week) installed Bing Desktop. Now I have this ugly green desktop, and Bing does not show up in the installed applications.
View 9 RepliesEvery since I installed Update 1 to Windows 8.1, the Bing News App has stopped working. The computer will bring up the app after waiting 3 or 4 minutes. Once the app is up, it only stays up 5-15 secs then reverts to the desktop. The reason I know it is Update 1 that is causing the problem, is because I called for assistance from HP and after 2 of their "techs" got through with the computer it was completly messed up. I had to do a system restore. I chose a restore point going back before the update. After this restore the Bing News App worked. My next two steps were to get Norton AntiVirus working and then to again install Update 1. As soon as this was done, Bing News App quit working again.
I have also, uninstalled and reinstalled the app but this did not change it's performance.

Since the latest Bing News app update came out, that can sync your settings across devices, mine wants to crash shortly after starting it. And this happens on multiple machines. I have managed to get into settings and turn off the sync of settings, turn off reading offline, and still no luck. It crashes every time. This even happens on a machine that just had Windows 8.1 completely reinstalled on it, and on my surface pro tablet which has had windows 8.1 on it for a while.

My upgrade from 7 Pro to 8 Pro was smooth.
I tried to use location on the Bing weather app and it was over 100 miles out. Couldn't figure out how to solve this so uninstalled it.
Then I did something obviously stupid, I did a restore. I thought that by 'all apps' WIndows 8 did not mean programs, but it evidently does (a slight rewrite would make that clearer to those of us who don't identify all apps as including programs).
Ok, I had to reinstall programs, a nuisance but that's all. However, all my Bing apps are now gone.
They appear in 'Your apps' in the store as in my computer named DOUGW-PC but a search doesn't find them. Reinstalling doesn't do anything either. I can install new apps and they show up fine.
I recently installed a virtual desktop application called Dexpot. Since then, I have noticed several unnamed applications show up in the Alt+Tab switcher. Most of them link to a metro settings page. One goes to search, another is called 'Immersive Background', and another called 'snapped desktop'.
So I uninstalled Dexpot and rebooted, but the apps are still there. I believe these apps are always running but are hidden from the regular Alt+Tab menu, and that Dexpot has messed up Z-orders or something. Here's a photo (Can't take screenshots with the switcher on) : [URL] ....

Tried uninstall and install the drivers lots of times and restored to an earlier point, no joy. Consequently I created a new user and the mouse and keyboard are working perfect.How could I use/share any programs/ applications I have installed and use in the newly creted profile?

I clicked on a random app and clicked on install and it just shows pending on my screen. I'm surfing the web, downloading windows updates, etc...
View 3 Replies View RelatedI installed windows 8 in HDD 1tb Seagate. Then I bought Corsair 240 SSD drive and fresh installed everything there. Now if I boot from SSD drive my Seagate won't show up and I have tried other cables I have 5 hard drives in my system. It shows up in boot menu but won't show up in Disk management or anywhere else.
Then I connected it to the USP port and disk shows up no problem. I would like to leave this copy in as a backup so I don't want to delete it. I can boot into these windows but then my Corsair SSD drive won't show up. Whats up here.
I hate it when I double click a file and Windows 8.1 pops up a message saying I have other apps that can handle this extension.
I disabled this notification through GPEDIT.MSC, it works now when I open pics/docs/etc.... but let's say I install another app, for example, when I install Pale Moon Browser,
I hate Windows 8 so much! Even with a start menu replacement, this ticks me off, it's crappy Wireless LAN manager sucks, its performance is less when I benchmarks my SSD
I can go back to 7, but I am trying to fix a few things if I could just to benefit from the UEFI boot mode as for installing 7, I have to enable legacy ROM which is much slower during boot.
Attempted to update to 8.1 yesterday and the store just won't open. Every time I click on the Store tile it doesn't get past the green introductory screen before just disappearing (crashing).. Have restarted several times and used the link-through on the Windows 8.1 site. Also, I have since discovered that all apps won't open either (such as news and sports).

How to check if i update the windows 8.1 update 1 from x64 bits systems because i download all packages from microsoft download center and install in that order and dont recive error. Every package ask me to reestart i see all packages are installed on update history and on the section installed updates but I don't see nothing related to windows 8.1 update 1 as the way as see when you install from win update. I check for updates and dont find nothing. I have my service packs and mayor updates on my pc stored because in this house all use win 8.1 x64 and we have a slow connection and because i install by this way. I must say you i see all characteristics of the update 1 but i want to know if don't have errors i ran dism online clean up image restore health and sfc scannow and dont find errors. I only am worried because if this update was not installed properly the supports ends on may 13 and want to have install by the right way.

I have noticed that applications that are launched from the Metro IU load and run much faster than the same applications launched from IE under desktop. I have even created Metro tiles for applications I normally run as they load and run much faster than launching them from the desktop. This site (Windows Eight Forms) would not load from desktop IE but loads immediately from a Metro tile I created.

My pc was working fine until yesterday night when july windows update was downloaded and installed.
Then when today morning i booted up my pc all my usb devices stopped working, I cannot use my mouse or keyboard when my windows is booted.
However, I am able to use my mouse and keyboard fine in UEFI bios without any issue.
I tried clearing cmos,changing ports,enable and disable legacy usb in bios,enable and disable intel xhci still my mouse and keyboard are not working when windows boots up.
I tried system restore using windows 8 cd but it ends up giving some error during restore and says unable to restore.
I am able to access my system registry and explorer using the windows 8 cd.
Most days when I turn my computer on but not open FireFox, Bing would open FireFox and insert itself as a Tab or two on FF. I have been trying to get it to stop opening FF and inserting itself onto tabs in my browser. We have 5 pages of suggestions and things I have tried but all has failed. I just want to be free of Bing.I tried to read your tutorial but I'm not understanding much of it. I was a long time XP user and when I had this computer set up, they modified 8.1 so I could use it more like XP, which I was very grateful for. I am well versed in the use of Windows Explorer and of Control Panel, though I'm not as familiar with some of the terms they use there. I don't know what a charm is (unless it's on a bracelet) and I need to know how to find the things mentioned in the tutorials.

I don't know where or how to find PC settings. I don't see it anywhere in Control Panel, nor Search and apps. So I gave up on that procedure.
2. To Turn Off Using Bing to Search Online using a REG File
I don't know what a REG File is. I downloaded Turn_Off_Use_Bing_to_Search_Online.reg. It was in Windows Explorer in Downloads. First I double clicked on it. It asked me if I wanted to run it and I said yes. It took me through a couple small screens and finally said: have been successfully added to the registry.Since it didn't act the way the tutorial said, I wondered if it had done what it was supposed to do. I went back to the downloaded file and right clicked on it and clicked on Merge and it took me through the same small screens and to the same final message.Is there something else I need to do? I still don't know where to find the slider that turns Bing off and on.

View 3 Replies View RelatedFrom the desktop I click on the IE in the taskbar box and it loads and loads then says "this page can NOT be displayed" I then rebooted, and from the start screen I click on the e tile for IE and Bing comes up perfect with bookmarks, and all the frills. I then closed it and tried to get back to Bing by clicking on the IE box in taskbar on the desktop and nothing "this page can NOT be displayed" again. I then went to the start screen clicked on the Bing tile and it loads, but no bookmarks or frills. I then came to this site from there. The screenshot will NOT work in the "this page cannot be displayed" page. Google works fine.
I installed the MS updates yesterday, that's all I have done to this computer. It WILL take a screenshot of the desktop, and it WILL take a screenshot when I am in Google.

My update history does not show any updates after 1/22/14. I know for sure that I have successfully installed at least a few dozen updates since then (almost all of them involving Windows Defender).
View 5 Replies View RelatedSince yesterday I noticed that the Bing News app crashes after I click on it. When I click on it, there's the normal animation of the tile flipping over and taking over the screen with the news icon in the middle. However, after 2 seconds the app crashes and brings me back to the Metro UI. I can still see the app open in the apps bar on the right but clicking on it keeps the app crashing. The Live tile is working properly but after I reinstalled the app (which didn't resolve the problem) it doesn't work anymore and there is no option to enable Live tile when right-clicking the app.
I didn't install any new drivers, software or updates (except for the Definition update for Windows Defender). All the other apps are working properly. Doing an SFC /scannow didn't find any integrity violations.
My specs:
Windows 8 Pro with Media Center 64x (don't want to install 8.1 just yet)
GTX 660Ti
i5-3570K
8 GB RAM

I have 4 Windows 8.1 systems and the Bing News app crashes after a few seconds to a minute on all four. It used to work fine so obviously, the settings (which are synced by OneDrive) must be corrupted.
Is there any way to clear the app settings? I tried uninstalling, rebooting, installing and that didn't work.
I tried turning off sync on all 4 machines, uninstalling the app, deleting sync data using the web, rebooting, and reinstalling but the settings just come back!
I'm using Windows 8.1 Pro 64 Bit. If I go to Control Panel/Windows Update/View Update History KB2919442 is shown as installed successfully on the 12 March 2014 "BUT" if I go to Control Panel/Windows Update/Installed Updates there is no KB2919442 listed.
If I download KB2919442 directly from Microsoft and try to install it manually it says "This update is not applicable to your computer"
I'm obviously having no success trying to install KB2919355 as it never shows as available in Windows Update and if I download it manually from Microsoft and try installing manually I get the same error message "This update is not applicable to your computer"
I would like to replace Bing search and use Google search when I open the IE app in Windows 8.1. Is this possible?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI built a new computer, and now have both a SSD and HDD setup. My intention was to have the SSD be only for Windows and use the HDD for everything else. I feel like that everything I download is going to the SDD and I am not getting any prompts for where to install applications.
For example, I just installed Office and was planning to install it on the HDD. I checked the SSD, and sure enough, there is a folder for Office. On a related note, the install setup everything for Office including OneDrive for Business. I don't need OneDrive for Business. Should there have been a prompt to select what Office applications I wanted to install?
I don't seem to be able to drag and drop anymore in more than one application, so it should be Windows, not the applications.
I did restart the laptop, but it didn't work.
I upgraded to Windows 8 about a month ago, and quite frankly I have never had so many problems on my previous operating systems (95, 98, 98SE, 2000NT, XP Home, XP Professional) as I have on this.
I have had to completely reinstall Windows 8 three times now due to things going wrong, such as;
1. 'Change PC Settings' became inoperative after a few days, nothing happens when I click on it.
2. The 'Desktop' Tile all of a sudden disappeared from the main start-up apps.
3. Some of my Desktop Shortcut Icons have turned blank just showing just a 'White Paper' Icon.
4. Some programs when I launch, say the I don't have Administration Rights to access the program, when I do have admin rights.
I notice looking through the posts in the forum that these problems come up very often, I have tried to fix them following other users advice but no joy.
I have the latest drivers, this includes my Graphics Display driver which is the latest version.
So whats going on with Windows 8, its the worst version of windows I've came across, when are the techies going to do something about these common problems, as I'm defiant to reinstall it all again which takes me all day due to the amount of software I have to reinstall.
sometimes when I type keys on the keyboard applications seem to appear. This happens quite a lot, I keep clicking control button and it eventually gets back to normal.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have installed Windows 8.1 64 bit on a new motherboard using a Logitech K120 keyboard. After using the system for a few weeks I have decide to put on a better keyboard. After swapping keyboards the system runs fine until I reboot. At that time Windows starts up as if it has never run before giving the "Hi" and "Adding applications" messages and then going to the normal tiles screen but it can find no applications. Rebooting give the same results. If I change the keyboard back and reboot, everything comes up fine.
I have tried 3 different keyboards, 2 different Microsoft and 1 Dell, with the same results. As far as I can tell, Windows 8 only works with the keyboard that was used to install it and can never be changed.
The only software running was Start8 to actually make Windows 8 useful but I removed that and confirm that the problem still existed without it.
