View 8 RepliesI was wondering if it's possible to take windows 7 from my first computer and install it to my new one that has windows 8 on it (windows 8 has problems with its wifi where windows 7 worked perfectly).
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a problem with Windows 8 in that it shall Freeze up without warning. I can get a freeze 1 a day sometimes 1 every 2-3 days but i never know to when or why. I have a Acer 5750g aspire laptop 15 core 8gb ram which came with Windows 7 pre-installed. Have had no problems with Windows 7 but ever since i upgraded to Windows cp and now Windows Pro have had this freezing problem. It is so annoying that it always seems to happen when your in the middle of some work or downloading and you lose your work because i am forced to turn of my computer and reboot again!
Do any other Windows 8 users have this problem?
I have tried many things to try and stop this, My drivers are up to date but yet i can still get a freeze.I also have Tune Up Utilities 2013 Mcafee installed so i should not really get any problems.
One thing i have been told to do is goto the msconfig and disable my services under services (by also ticking hide all Microsoft Services) except for Mcafee, This is a lot better but i have had a freeze since but maybe this was because i installed a new program and it showed up under services and i had to untick this.
I click on remove everything and reinstall windows, it goes to the logo saying restarting/preparing but the after that it goes to a black screen and stay there forever. I really need to reset my laptop. Its been running really slow lately.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI understand how to uninstall a Windows 8 app from my computer but if I go into the "Your apps" option of the Windows 8 Store the app still appears as something I "own" (though, in this case, it happens to be free). What can I do to remove it permanently from my account? I do not want it showing up as an app that I own and is not yet installed on my computer.
View 4 Replies View RelatedMy dad recently had his old vista computer die. I decided (after another discussion here on the forums) that Id backup his old OS, move it to the new computer, and then upgrade it to the newer windows. The problem I am having is that once I got the backup onto a partition of the new computer it gets a 0xc000000f error so I cant boot into it and do the upgrade. I tried all the normal bootrec options (rebuildbcd, fixboot, fixmbr) but none of them worked and I ran a chkdsk. I tried putting in the vista install media to repair the OS so I could boot into it and do the upgrade but the vista boot disk didnt recognize the OS (I think windows 8 might have something to do with that).
View 2 Replies View RelatedUsing Windows 8.1, computer is now turning on by itself. I make sure I shut it down correctly. It turns on but the screen is blank and it does not respond to mouse or keyboard. The only way to get it to work is to uplug it and then plug it in again. This has happened numerous times. There are no messages on the screen. Have run numerous virus scans and nothing shows up. The computer is not even a year old - Dell inspiron all in one.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI just received a new Dell Inspiron 15R-5520 64 bit laptop. I also ordered and received from Dell the Windows 8 OS DVD along with a Drivers DVD. I also own a valid Windows 7 OS with product key. I use Acronis True Image 2013 to backup and restore images of the OS.
I wish to partition my HDD into C: and D: with C: containing OS and Programs and D: containing Data. I have done this for years with all prior OS's up through 7. Now I wish to partition the HDD to accept either Windows 7 or 8. I don't wish to setup as dual boot since I will eventually decide on one or the other. I will create Acronis backups of both so I can switch back and forth easily. The Data partition should remain unchanged.
I've now partitioned the HDD with type MBR partitions and installed Windows 7. It's been backed up. I re-formatted C: and attempted to install Windows 8 to the C: drive. It failed without any clear error message. I'm thinking that it refused to install to a type MBR partition? If so, I need to re-partition the HDD to type GPT and start over. I have the following questions:
1. Does Windows 8 refuse to install to type MBR partitions?
2. If so, how best to convert partitions to GPT?
3. How to install Windows 7 to GPT partitions?
After upgrading a Dell XPS One using both Intel HD 4000 and nVidia 640M graphics, the computer takes 5 minutes to restart. The restart screen immediately shows up after hitting the restart button. Then the screen goes black for 5 minutes. Afterwards the Dell logo shows up and everything starts fine from there. I don't understand why the monitor stays black for 5 minutes before restarting.

View 6 Replies View RelatedAny time windows updates, it's supposed to turn off, then turn back on to finish.
Well anytime it turns off, it won't turn back on. The last time it did this, it corrupted the BCD.
The computer shuts down ok via the menu, and will start back up when I power it on, but if I hit restart, it just shuts off, and won't come back on unless the power button is pressed.
When I start my computer startup is slow and then when I get to desktop all the programs that are set to start at startup don't start. I try to launch google chrome and it never starts. For some reason, when I open folders it opens fast. Now here is where it gets weird. It appears that using the force restart button on my PC.

For example, is there a decent lightweight DVD (and maybe bluray) player, that doesn't have a crapload of useless and redundant features?
I want to upgrade a computer from Windows 8 to 8.1 but I have a very low download allocation (2GB/month) at that computer. I would like to download the upgrade on another computer (a Mac) that has a much higher download allowance and then transfer that to the computer I need to update. Is this at all possible?

I've got an issue with Windows 8.1 x64 where sometimes (not always), if I Shut Down the computer, it'll shut down as normal, even displaying the "Shutting Down..." message, but rather than powering the machine off, it'll reboot just as if I had initiated a Restart instead of a Shut Down.
I definitely know I haven't accidentally told the computer to Restart as it's happened more than once, I know I've selected the Shut Down button and Windows 8.1 even states it's Shutting Down and not Restarting. If I restart the computer instead of shutting it down, it'll restart just as it should, nothing wrong there.
There is no abnormal behaviour at all during this process. The computer does behaves identically to if it was supposed to Restart and Windows throws no errors, BSOD's or any trace of something going wrong and thus somehow causing the machine to reboot rather than shutdown. powercfg /lastwake gives no information at all and Event Viewer lists nothing under Critical or Errors that could be a cause.
Most of the time though, the computer will just shut down as it should, but this random rebooting is getting very irritating. If I shut down the computer again after it has restarted (when I told it to Shut Down), it will then Shut Down as it should.
Something I should note however, when I shut down the computer, I do so through Classic Shell Start Menu's Shut Down button. Every time these random reboot occur, I have shut the computer down via Classic Shell Start Menu. I rarely shut the computer down any other way, so perhaps somehow Classic Shell is to blame? Perhaps there way of telling Windows to shutdown is a bit flaky?
I believe the same issue occurred on my laptop (also running Windows 8.1 x64 with Classic Shell Start Menu) when I shut it down through Classic Shell's Start menu, but only once (I don't use my laptop nearly as much as my desktop). This problem has never occured on my desktop or laptop back when they were running Windows 8 (not 8.1).

I just bought a 1TB hard drive for my pc running windows 8 and now my roomate wants to use my computer. Is there any way to separate the HDD in two? 500GB designated to him and 500 to me? There should be a way to do that because I dont want my roomate to see my files on the (local disk) which is what it's called right now.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a laptop with windows 8, and everytime (or almost everytime, about 4/5 of the times) when I start/restart it, it says that it's configuring windows, please do not shut down your computer. This takes about 20 minutes each time and is really annoying.
Also, I'm not sure this happens all the time, but the first time this happend I just sat by my computer and waited. There I saw that first it was configuring, then when that got to 100%, it said "Configuration failed", then it said "Restarting" and started all over again, but the 2nd time it finished successfully and the computer started.
Since then, I haven't bothered sitting by my laptop and waiting for it while it updates, so I go do something else. So I don't know if that "Configuration failed" thing happens everytime or only that time.
My Windows 8 computer keeps telling me that there was an unexpected error when ever I hibernate my computer and restart it, but if i shut it down and restart i don't get the error.
