I bought a desktop from a pawn shop a few weeks ago figured it would be a good deal. Unfortunately the person who sold it to them left a password on it. I have no way to recover the password so I need to find a way to factory reset the computer without a boot up disk.

I've tried every password I have ever used and the only thing it says is to go to access.live.com to reset my password. I'm afraid to try it on this computer for fear it will lock me out of this one too. It is MY computer. I've enabled read/write file sharing and given the problem computer full access permissions but still can't get in. View 1 Replies View Related I have an aunt who runs a business who wants to be able to let the computer run over night at her business and let me access it remotely to do the usual disk cleanup, defrag, virus scans and backups. Currently I have to go on Sundays to do all this and it is just a pain to sit there and wait for the task to complete. I did have some of these automated but some how under the computer illiterate they always get messed up.
Is there a piece of software (preferably free) that will let me access her machine to do all this? It doesn't matter if I need her on the other end to grant me permission to access the machine but I would rather do this from home during the night then do all this on a Sunday.

When I click on my computer, the various drives I have connected show up in the main panel, but when I click on any of them (Icons for any drives), I get the error message: "The file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action.....".
However, in the left side panel, if I click on any of the drives, I have access to them.
Today I decided to reformat my laptop after it started to run slow. I backed up all my important folders onto an external hard drive and copied them back onto my fresh hard drive. Everything was fine until I tried to access one folder that I had shared on my previous account. It said that I did not have permission to access any file, but I cannot give myself permission because I reformatted my computer. I tried to go into the properties and give myself permission but it keeps telling me that I can't do it and I need the owner's permission. Is there anyway I can access these files or did I screw myself by not realizing I needed to give permission before reformatting?

I have two computers on the SAME test private LAN one Whitehorse (W2003 server) and the other Blackdog (Windows 8 Enterprise) both enabled "Shareable and Visible".

View from Windows 8 - Networking shows the computer Whitehorse (W2003 server) but can't access any disks etc (or even its printer). PING even fails but Windows 8 obviously knows it's on the Network because its found it. The stupid Windows diagnostics when you click Diagnose doesn't work at all --in fact I've NEVER found the network diagnostic panel of the slightest bit of support ever.
I've switched off firewalls etc while testing so there's no security rubbish to take care of while I'm trying to get this to work. LAN is purely LOCAL -- no computer is on "the other side" of a router.
Both machines can access independently the Internet through a Local router and connections are via LAN cable so nothing should be simpler. !! But can I get this to work !!.
I had a similar problem with W7 but it seemed to "Disappear" without me actually doing anything -- the proverbial "Ghost in the Machine" I expect.
(Windows Networking Grrrhhhhhh! -- I'm not particularly technical with this stuff but any time I've used Networking with Linux it works STRAIGHT OUT OF THE BOX and there's no problem sharing from or to windows. !!)
Note -- Other W7 / Linux / XP computers connected to this SAME LAN (currently switched off) have NO problem accessing the server -- It's just this Windows 8 Machine (Windows 8 x-64 Enterprise version).

Currently we are in domain environment and behind Microsoft tmg.
When proxy settings are set to auto detect then browsing is not working on internet explorer 10 but it's working flawlessly in Chrome. however manually entering the proxy settings browsing is Internet Explorer works.
I tried browsing by ip address in internet Explorer but no luck. It's only on this one pc.
Windows is updated regularly. Scep 2012 is installed with latest definition and found no issue.
I have tried twice to Reset the windsock and tcp ip stack. Still same result. Uninstalled network card drivers still no luck.
Ip is assigned by DHCP. I manually entered ip settings no luck.
Scan with malware bytes anti malware found three malwares and quarantined but still no luck.
Network cable is tested ok.
Reset internet explorer settings and restart pc but still no luck.
Removed Internet Explorer and restart computer and then installed again and restart and still no luck.
Also tried disabling ipv6 no luck.
Internet Explorer 10 is needed as we have some custom applications that won't work with ie 11.
However when I login with another account (another domain user account) all is ok i.e. browsing in IE with auto detect proxy settings is working and also the network icon is not showing no Internet access.
Why I can't access to MDL under Win 8.1 ( firewall deactivate etc..), with Win 7 I don't have this problem.

However, I am running into issues because I have other third party software starting up with my computer such as Norton internet security, Dropbox, etc. But those processes do not appear within this tab and never have. I would like to find out, is there an alternate way of accessing these entries in order to either enable or disable them?
View 9 Replies View RelatedSuddenly Win 8.1 (on partition F) can't read anymore my other partions on the same drive, also it coudn't read my external USB drive.
When clicking on the partitions c: or d: it says 'cannot access local device' and 'device not ready'.
I have a dual boot system with Windows 7 and 8.1. I can boot into Windows 7 and read all partitions. I also checked the MBR which looks fine. I also have controlled in Computer Management that all drives have a letter assigned.
However Windows 8.1 can read my USB drives and the installation DVD of Windows 8.
Clicking on properties of e.g. drive c: there is of course no security tab, so it shouldn't be a question of permissions. Also no error codes in event log.
Booting in safe mode does still does not solve the problem. Of course Windows 8.1 can read perfectly its partition where it has been installed.
I know, a repair or refresh might be the solution, but if possible I want to avoid it.
Checked also with my different antivirus and spyware programs. All comes clean.
So earlier I installed Windows 8 over Windows 7 (upgraded), and it was running almost flawlessly at first. I needed to update some drivers so I restarted my computer. It booted up just fine, however I could not access the login page at all. It was just a blank blue screen (not BSOD), and my cursor which I could move around.
I thought that the upgrade was the problem, so I eventually got around to dual booting Windows 7 and 8. The same thing happened, with it working fine at first, restarting the computer and facing the blank blue screen, not able to access Windows 8.

I tried a clean retail install of windows 8 pro, and without any other installed programs problem existed.
There is no program using more that 0.1mb/sec, its just usage.

I did NOT notice this at all for the first month I had my new laptop.
The only thing that ever makes it better, is if the HD is being constantly accessed by a program, such as defrag - while defrag is running, my computer never pauses and it runs smooth as it should.
I tried Clean installs, turning off page file, turning off indexing. Is it a HW issue?
I am trying to install the Windows 8 DVD over the current XP OS, but in MyComputer, the DVD Drive isn't listed in the tree view. Device manager says it's installed properly and functioning well. My Q is this: how do I run the installation DVD from the DVD drive using the Command Prompt. On Windows Start-up I hit F12 to access the boot order, and when I arrowed down to the DVD drive and hit ENTER, Windows would just jump straight to the XP start-up process. It's like something won't let me access the DVD Drive.

I was looking at my email and decided to go to another web site and kept getting "server not found" or "problem loading page". I tried other sites and got the same message using Mozilla Firefox, then I tried with Internet Explorer, same thing! Did a restart and still the same. HP did a network check and tells me to "reset my broadband modem and router" Duh!
