Somehow I have lost the ability to not use my microsoft account password to get access to my home computer. How can I get this back to my old password not connected to Microsoft account?
View 7 RepliesOkay, so this the worst I've ever been locked out of a computer. There's an account on the computer that's been linked to a Microsoft account, however the MS account password is lost and since all the forgot password options have been filled in with gibberish there's really no way to recover it.
Normally I'd say just reinstall the OS, but apparently we need access to this account.
There's no other user accounts whatsoever. Just one administrator account.
So, facts:
- It's linked to Microsoft.
- Microsoft account in inaccessible.
- Microsoft account cannot be recovered.
- There's no backups or anything.
- Computer account needs to be accessed unharmed.
Ultimately, I guess we need to actually hack into this account by force and I honestly don't know how to do something going that far because I've never been forced to go that far before. I'm going to guess it's going to involve booting from a pendrive or something.
For some reason I forgot my Microsoft password on my new box. It won't let me access it. I've tried every password I have ever used and the only thing it says is to go to access.live.com to reset my password. I'm afraid to try it on this computer for fear it will lock me out of this one too. It is MY computer. I'd really rather NOT have any security on it at all since no one else would use it without my permission, anyway. Justa gigantic
View 4 Replies View RelatedAfter my upgrade to 8.1 Pro my computer lost the ability to sleep/hibernate. After following many tips on here, I managed to get sleep & hibernation onto the shutdown menu so manual operatin works okay.
The automatic mode is still a work in progress but I'm wondering if I've managed to get it to go into automatic sleep mode but not as yet hibernation.
I prefer to use hibernation so don't really know alot about sleep mode - I've got it configured to go into hibernation (10 minutes ) before sleep (15 minutes) in the power options.
After a period of time the computer will automatically attempt to enter either sleep or hibernation mode - not sure which. The screen switches off and the cpu increases in volume as if its consuming more power. The blue light flashes slowly which to me signifies that it has entered sleep mode. The computer has in effect shut down but sounds like its in overdrive with either the cpu or fan going ten to the dozen. Clicking the mouse wakes it up and brings it back to the sign-on screen.
So what's going on here? Is this a failed attempt at sleep mode as trying manual sleep brings the same result. It certainly doesn't go into automatic hibernation which is something I'm ultimately trying to resolve.
So I'm not sure if I've solved automatic sleep or not as its unbearably noisy and not something I can put up with.
I've installed Windows 8.1 Home Premium on my parents laptop and I'm now trying to set up their email account.
It is a non MS account which Windows 8 doesn't seem to allow me to create. I've searched for a solution but they seem to require the Local Group policy to be edited and as far I've researched home premium doesn't include the management function to do so.
Does this mean if you are using Windows 8.1 Home Premium you are tied to using a MS mail account.
I want to be able to use the store and stuff, and you have to be logged into your microsoft account for that. I don't want my computer to have a password though. And if you have your microsoft account as your logged in, then you have to use that password. How can I change this?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a new Samsung lap top nd set up the Microsoft account to an email address - it is the main one for my computer but wont accept the password, I have changed it several times and each time I try again I have the same problem - I can't get into things as its looking for the password which it wont accept! I have deleted the account hoping that would prompt something - but no - even more problems!! I do have another account that I have set up and have added as an additional user - how do I get this one onto the main one for my lap top? as I am no further forward except wishing I hadn't bought the lap top or windows *!

Disabling wake-on-usb is not an option as i want to be able to wake up my computer when i press a key on my keyboard.I have tried to check in device manager for the power control options of my mouse.
I am a system administrator in a large enterprise environment and we are doing a rollout of Windows 8.1. In our image capture we somehow captured a setting that is disabling users from setting up a connected account with their domain account. I am relatively sure that it is in my unattend and I can fix it for machines going forward but I really don't want to have to reimage the machines I've already deployed.
When I go to connect an account, the "connect to a Microsoft account" option is grayed out and the "some settings are managed by your administrator" message is displayed at the top. This is NOT a group policy object that is applying. The machines are in a test OU and there is absolutely no policy applied. I have searched all through local policy and even did a search through the registry for "account" (that took forever) but have been unable to find any registry key or local policy that would be causing this issue.
What setting might be causing this? I have 30+ machines already out in the environment and the user experience is going to be terrible if I have to reimage them all.
I have a user with a machine that was setup with Win 8.1 Home. The machine has been upgraded to 8.1 Pro and joined to a domain (WinSrv 2003). I need to get the content/configuration from their old local machine user profile to their new domain user profile.
I tried to copy the contents of their ../users/<name>/.. folder from the local user profile to the new domain user profile (after they had logged in once, and then logged off). This did not work. When I did the copy, I grabbed all files, including hidden...was that my mistake, or is the issue broader?
In the end....they want their old stuff and configuration under their new credentials/profile.
I have just added another Win 8 machine to stable for my wife. It is 'Modern' all the way -- no Start8 or Classic Shell.
I have Mahjong installed on my own older Windows 8 Desktop and when I installed it on the new machine I must have done something differently than the first for I often get a request to sign in to my Microsoft Account and the then tells me sometimes that I have games saved out on the cloud and some locally and then asks me which do I choose. To my knowledge I have never saved any game anywhere on either machine.
Did I perhaps specify cloud storage somewhere in the setup process. How may I correct this little bothersome thing.My wife just came in and said her new machine reports 'connection to Xbox lost' or something like that while playing Mahjong. What does that mean?
I have somehow lost my password. I have been onto Microsoft and filled out the lost p/w form without any success. I can see the log in window but that is it. I am now using my second computer to write this.
View 1 Replies View RelatedInstalled Windows 8 on my desktop. Bought another licence (download) for my wife's laptop. Everything went fine until I used netplwiz to change her to the administrator and only user. I thought that went ok but now she is the only user and I'm being prompted for a password everywhere which doesn't work. I can't even run a third party application from a thumb drive. I wouldn't mind reinstalling Windows 8 if that's the fix but I couldn't find the executable after it downloaded and installed. I probably wouldn't be able to execute it anyway without admin privileges. Tried to buy yet a third copy of Windows 8 to reinstall on the laptop and I couldn't even do that without admin privileges.

I recently turn off the login password on Windows 8.1, HP laptop. The next time she went to turn it on, all the normal tiles from the Start Screen were gone with the exception of five tiles: IE, File Explorer, Store, SkyDrive and Desktop.
The File Explorer icon opens a folder showing the various libraries and devices/drivers. When she clicks on the Documents folder it doesn't show any of her files. I did eventually find them by going to her name in the Users folder, but we cannot understand why simply taking away the requirement for a login password would change everything. All her browser favorites were also wiped out, and she had to reinstall Chrome.
I just noticed today that my windows 8 mail app (the standard one from ms) was no longer showing me notifications when email arrived. I went over to the app and noticed that the google syncing had changed and required me to re-authenticate my google account to it. That went fine. Then I noticed that my exchange account is now missing from the app (not in the mailbox view, nor is it in the list of accounts). However, when I try to add my exchange account, it says "You've already added this account". Is there anywhere else I can remove the exchange account or somehow get it show up again in the mail app?

My router is a Linksys WRT160Nv2. I set up UPnP and did what Microsoft said here for my router: Windows Home Server Router Setup
I have some encrypted files that were encrypted under a windows8 account that got corrupted by the 8.1 update.
I had to delete the account and recreate it. I created the same User ID and same PW but I can't decrypt the files now...
I swore I've done that before and regained access to the files. Was that an old WinXP thing?
Even though I know the password is the cert used to encrypt/decrypt seeded by time or something else random as well?
I.E., are the files lost because I didn't back-up my cert/private key?
I was annoyed by how Windows 8 keeps sharing folders on any network I connect to, so I did some digging on Google and found a post on how to disable network sharing. Someone also mentioned how changing Users Permissions / settings would things further, so I went ahead and changed those (I got a whole bunch of prompts to confirm changes and accepted all of them).
Now I can only access some areas of my computer but I can't run a lot of programs and I also can't access my C drive when I go to "My Computer" and try opening it from there.
When trying to access C: I get the following error "C: is not accesible. Access is denied"
Also, several programs aren't running anymore and I get a message saying something like "path not found" (see attachments)
When I check my User Account (control panel, user accounts) I see myself as "Administrator" but I cant change any settings there either (for example, when I click on the "change your account type" link, nothing happens (no new window opens and no error message).
I've tried everything, including installing "takeownership.reg" but I can't even instal that ! (see attachment)
I've also tried restoring the system to a previous restore point but can access any (including when I reboot using the "Shift" key).

Can make the password visible, it is correct. Running no version of webroot. Restore the computer to a time when the password worked, it never has even though it is correct for signing into my account on the micro website. Changed my password and still no success.
When I go to advanced system settings and choose Home instead of business, when I save and restart it is still on Business network. I have windows 8 pro 64 bit on a HP pavilion elite 8 gb ram i6 1tb drive. I have made sure that the services below are running as well as set to Auto.

View 2 Replies View RelatedIs there a way to reset a microsoft account?Several times I have formatted and reinstalled and each time when it asks whether I want to use the settings already assigned to my profile or not...and selecting No...it still seems to be bring things over like the wallpaper etc.
So to be clear, fresh install....during final stages, it asks to create a login or sign in using a microsoft account which is what I do. When I do this, it asks whether I want to use the settings already on the profile...I say no I want to set it up as a new PC and yet still wallpaper comes back (Sony vaio wallpaper)
I'm just thinking if the wallpaper comes back..what else does? So I want to know whether there is a way (apart from closing the account and recreating it) to reset the profile so nothing is attached to it.
My Win 8 installation, upon a power on startup or restart, booted to the Start screen without going through the process of logging in. I don't recall how I accomplished that. I just upgraded to 8.1 and it insists on logging into my MS account and requires I enter my account password.
How do I get 8.1 to avoid that step?
