Jul 20, 2014I recently found out about the File History feature in Windows 8 and I think it's a great feature, but, in my opinion, its only drawback is that its backup schedule is only time-based. Is there any similar software that can be set to automatically backup files as soon as there's a change in them? I know the time for File History can be as low as 10 minutes, but what if a file is changed multiple times in less than 10 minutes? A similar feature is available in Google Drive where the backups are made according to file changes and they are not time-based...

Security :: Full Disk Encryption - Alternative To Bitlocker
Dec 3, 2013I'm seeking full-disk encryption software. I want to encrypt the volume that my Windows installation is on.
First of all, does Bitlocker come on the home edition of Windows 8.1? I recall on previous versions it was only available in the Pro editions.
However, I would prefer to use an open-source disk encryption solution. I've searched but I have not found any that can encryption the Windows installation volume, the ones I found (such as TrueCrypt) can only set up additional encrypted partitions which is no good for me.
Network / Sharing :: Skype Or Viop Alternative For Home LAN Only?
Feb 12, 2014I'm looking for a skype like tool to use over my home LAN. Your definition of a LAN may be different than mine.. what I'm calling a LAN is my home network which is simply two different computers plugged into my AT&T modem/router. (one plugged in by hardwire and one on wireless)
My thinking is this.. I need to chat and video with family at home no one else but i don't want the chat audio and video going out over the internet then coming back to my house before we receive the data.. that takes too long and there are delays due to low bandwidth. I'm seeking to avoid this by keeping all the data from leaving my house and going out to the internet.
I have looked at SIP tools like Linphone but when i signed up and set it up, nowhere does it ask me for any LAN information.. It never asks me for or tries to detect any LAN settings - it looks like it's going out over the internet to some SIP servers someplace.. thats simply not going to work.
Browsers/Mail :: Alternative Email Client To Outlook (Not Web Based)
Dec 14, 2013I'm trying to look for an alternative robust email client to outlook -- want to start gradually moving away from Ms Office to cheaper solutions.
I don't like the way Ms is going with subscription based Office 365 and Office 2013 is IMO "The Pits" - office 2010 works fine but I want where possible to start using alternatives. Libre Office is fine for some things but not quite ready for prime time yet (IMO) especially for EXCEL but I can start moving away from office gradually with an email client first.
The email client must NOT be web or browser based (I Hate webmail type of things) and must support IMAP. I don't want it to have ADWARE or NAGWARE (you know those that keep persuading you "Please update to PRO version etc etc"). It must also support MULTIPLE ACCOUNTS. It should ideally have a similar or identical interface to OUTLOOK -- simple plain, not like the background I've seen on some Gamers machines !!!!
If it can integrate with GMAIL that's fine but not mandatory. Preferably free too .
I did see a portable client ISCRIBE at i.Scribe and InScribe: A Small and Easy to use Email Client but it looks as if it might be a little experimental.
I discarded OPERAMAIL -- don't want any BROWSER or web mail type of stuff.
Linux has some decent choices such as EVOLUTION (probably one of the best if not the best) but Windows seems a bit lacking in this area -- pity OUTLOOK EXPRESS wasn't continued after XP -- it was small, simple and could also manage multiple accounts.

Drive 1 : OS Win 8.1 for general web, office and junk running
Drive 2 : OS Win 8.1 for tweaked hobby work; Audio recording etc
Whilst I wish to not physically disconnect the drives on each boot. I would like to have the alternative drive hidden and not impacted when the other drive is running for the OS.Boot up from Drive 1 this currently shows as Drive C: and the secondary drive with the OS installed as D:

Aug 8, 2013I was wondering if we have a way to customize the Start Orb/Button with this software? I downgraded to an older version because the newest one had a look that literally appears to be the Shell gasoline logo! At least with this version it simulates the Windows color scheme.
I am using Version 3.6.7. The current version is 3.6.8. but it has a blued out background with the Shell logo prominent.
If it were not for Classic Shell I would not be using Windows 8 at all.
Windows 8 Pop Up Keyboard In Desktop Mode?

Now my q. is: Is there a keyboard which pops out like it comes on in Metro mode? Also is there a soft keyboard complete with Function keys etc, which also can be sized according to size of the Tablet?

Jul 15, 2014I have an Acer Aspire M computer with a touch screen that runs Windows 8.1. I was having issues with the touch screen, so I went to download the drivers from the Acer website. However, when I restarted my computer to complete the installation, it wouldn't allow me to use either the mouse, touch screen, or keyboard.
Normally, after loading, a personalized picture will appear on the screen, displaying the time, connectibility, and strength of the network. The user is then supposed to swipe up, click on, or press space to move the picture, at which point the login screen appears. My computer loads normally when starting, but won't allow me to use the mouse, touch screen, or keyboard to move the picture out of the way, so I cannot access the login screen.
I have already contacted the Acer company support and attempted to use the battery reset pinhole, but to no avail. Is there anything I can do, besides a factory reset or using it as a cat bed?
Keyboard Not Detected During Windows 8 Boot?
Sep 21, 2014i have windows 8.1 and a Logitech k810 keyboard.I know that the keyboard can not access bios (because Bluetooth drivers do not start until windows boots). All i want to do is to make windows not freeze with that message that last 10 seconds before it resumes normal boot. After windows resumes normal boot the keyboard works just fine no problems i can log in etc..
To be even more clear I do not want to make windows load its Bluetooth driver faster or sooner than it normal does. All i want is for that message to not appear and windows go on its way booting without telling me and freezing on the no keyboard found message. How do i bypass that keyboard check? How do i make windows ignore it if i cant bypass so it wont display the message ?

From time to time I noticed there is installed a US keyboard, I am UK based and any setup keyboard/date etc are in UK format. Also when I installed the windows I selected (autodetected) the UK settings.
Also, I noticed that the US keyboard does not exist on the layouts (I am using Greek and UK), so in order to get rid of this, I have to add and the remove the US keyboard, but after a while re-appears!

No Keyboard / Mouse Response After Windows 8 Update?
Apr 25, 2013I bought a Sony Vaio E-Series SVE17812BCXB running Windows 8. After the last major windows update that occurred in Feburary '13, the keyboard/mouse stop responding once the fully loaded splash screen is presented (With the time and date, ect).
I know the keyboard and mouse are fully functioning as I can use them when I access the boot menu before the OS is loaded. Also, only the keyboard 'functions' work when the OS is loaded, such as adjusting the brightness of the monitor (fn+F5) and such, but nothing else.
I try to do a system restore and it fails on all available restore points. I try to do a manual repair using a bootable USB drive, and it just loads windows like normal. I'm at a loss on how to get this fixed and as of right now, I purchased an $800 paper-weight.
Windows 8 Laptop Keyboard Fully Locked
Jul 19, 2013My son's laptop suddenly had all keyboard functions totally locked last night.
He was wondering whether he entered some sort of control sequence, accidentally, for this to happen.
He has managed to recover by going back to a restore checkpoint for earlier this week.
In case this happens again, is there any Windows control sequence he could have used to resolve this?

Sep 16, 2013Recently I updated my laptop and when it was finished updating the keyboard no longer worked. Before the update it worked fine and I had no problems. I restarted it several times and restored it but still nothing. Now I am stuck using the on screen keyboard which is difficult. I also went to try and fix it using device manager but it wasn't listed.

May 19, 2014I have a Transformer Book T100. For those unfamiliar, it is a tablet/laptop hybrid running full windows 8.1 (not RT). The screen separates from the keyboard dock at the push of a button and can be snapped back in easily.
Here's my problem: when the keyboard dock is connected, the touch keyboard still comes up on the screen if I tap a text field, resizing the current app and hogging resources. Is there a way to completely disable the touch keyboard when the physical keyboard is connected, yet have it fully available when the physical keyboard is disconnected? I have only found methods to either disable it all the time, or enable it all the time.
Gateway Windows 8 Cursor / Keyboard Not Working
Jul 12, 2014I have a Gateway laptop with windows 8...it shut itself down and restored...it has done this before with no issues. The computer loaded and is at the start page where all the apps are listed. I cannot use the cursor...it doesn't show up. When it goes to sleep usually I can hit the space bar and it responds..but nothing...seem the whole key board is frozen. I have tried the function keys for the cursor and nothing...I have taken my mouse from my other computer to try to use it in the lap top and nothing...I have turned the computer off and on..still nothing.
I use my laptop for work and I am frustrated now that I can't get in to it. It seems locked somehow or stuck. When I hit F1 it does open the desktop page and I see the box appear but I can't click on it. The only way to wake the computer up to see the screen I unplug or replug the power cord in. Other than that it seems to go back to sleep.
Security :: How To Turn On Windows Defender Using Keyboard
Jun 6, 2013I just got my Toshiba laptop Tuesday and I'm having a hard time turning Windows Defender on. I saw the tutorial, but I'm almost totally blind and I use the Jaws screen reader, so I can only use the keyboard and not the mouse.
I pressed the windows key, which used to bring up the search box, but now does something weird, and started typing defender, which brought up the Windows Defender app. When I pressed enter, a dialog box, or what sounded like a dialog box, popped up and said Windows Defender has been turned off, but there's no option to enable it, just a message that says to go to action center but doesn't do anything and a close button. I tried to go to Action Center, but it was really confusing. I found something that let me turn it on, but it still says it's off when I go to check it.
Not sure if the Norton the laptop came with is balking me and not letting me use Defender or what. I tried to uninstall the truckload of programs from Norton using add or remove programs, but I assume it opened Norton to do the uninstall because I heard Norton internet security dialog, but that was all it said. I'm not sure if it was uninstalling or what, as Norton doesn't work at all with Jaws. I called Toshiba because I was having a few more problems that they were able to fix, but when I asked about Defender, they transferred me to their paid tech support people who wanted to charge me an arm and a leg to do remote access, when all I wanted were instructions on how to do it myself. Is there any way to turn Defender on without having to mess with Norton or do I need to get someone to uninstall it for me?
Also, is Defender an actual antivirus program or just something to be used along with an antivirus? Security Essentials was recommended to me by an expert in adaptive technology for the blind because it was the most accessible antivirus program there was, but when I attempted to download it I found out you have to use Defender now with Win 8. What confuses me is that the Toshiba tech support worker said Defender wasn't an antivirus program. Can I use that or do I need to go the next best route and get Avast, which I hear is sort of accessible?
New Windows 8 Install - Keyboard Delay And Freeze Up
Sep 24, 2013I installed Windows 8 standard package a few weeks ago on a AMD FX-8350/Asus MBO, 16 GB RAM, 128 GB SSD, 2x 1TB Seagate Barracuda configured as one 2 TB drive with Storage Spaces. It initially worked fine. Then when I installed a SSD optimization software from the SSD manufacturer, Samsung. I believe it was called Magician or something like that. It was a problem in that it slowed down my SSD, according to Samsung's own software, and it seemed to be the cause of keyboard freezing and/or major delay. I uninstalled it and the problem went away.
Now it has come back again. It seems to happen almost at random in any application. The mouse works fine, and never freezes, but the keyboard either has a large delay and the first character typed is lost, or it just does not respond at all. Closing the app, like IE10 and opening it again does not resolve it. Often the keyboard is still frozen.
I updated the graphics card driver to the latest from AMD. It is a Radeon HD7770. It seemed to work for a while, but it is back again. I can't think of any significant software I have installed, except perhaps the monitor calibrator, Spyder4Express. However all it should do is create a new monitor ICC profile.
The sad part is I had nearly this exact same problem with another computer years ago, and I cannot remember how I resolved it. I was using McAfee AV and ZoneAlarm, and I may have given both of them the boot. Currently all I am running is the default MS Defender AV. I've reset the Security in IE10 to default.
Can't think of more to do. I have Process Explorer and tried running it. I am not very familiar with this software, but from what I could see the processor is not loaded nor is any significant memory used when it the keyboard is locked. I can't seem to catch it doing anything bad. I checked the batteries on the keyboard as it is wireless and they are good. I have a faint recollection of having a wireless phone system that was conflicting, but since this new computer install I am using the same wireless router, same wireless phone system, and same wireless keyboard. It would seem unlikely out of the blue for them to start conflicting.

Oct 30, 2013I have Windows 8.1 Pro and a Logitech K800 Keyboard (wireless/illuminated) and I'm continuing to be frustrated by the fact that the Mute button does not work. Oddly enough, I had the same problem with a previous Windows 8.0 Pro install -- it went away when I upgraded to Windows 8.1. But the problem started again shortly afterward (maybe a week or two). I have the latest drivers and apps installed from Logitech.
After a reboot, the first time I hit the Mute key momentarily mutes the sound but then the sound returns (maybe after 1 second). After that, hitting the Mute key has no effect at all.
I have searched Google for a solution but nothing matches my problem. Oddly there are reports of all volume-related keys not working, but the Volume up and Volume down keys still work for me.

Mar 31, 2014App that works well with Windows 8.1, to make clickety sounds when you type on a regular keyboard? You know, so it will sound like a typewriter or something like that. Something that gives you a little audio feedback when you type, but doesn't have gimmicky, "funny" sounds.
I tried ClicKey, which is a good program because you can adjust the sound level, but it didn't work well for me. It stopped clicking after while.I also tried KSG, but it didn't work at all. I tried quertick, and it works fine, but you can't adjust the sound level.
Windows 8 Keyboard Shortcuts Locked - Unable To Type?
Dec 12, 2013This is weird, occasionally as I open up firefox and go to enter text into any field I notice that I am unable to type. Instead what happens is if I hit a key such as F which is linked to a windows shortcut for files, the files search menu pops up even though i never pressed the windows key at any time. This problem isn't just limited to firefox, once it is started I have a very hard time getting it to being able to type normally. So if there is no shortcut linked to that key, there is no input otherwise i get the shortcuts (H - share, Q - search, etc). Restarting doesn't always work, sometimes all it takes is excessive clicking of a search bar, other times just closing an internet broswer. Pressing the windows key does nothing, and I haven't been able to find a concrete fix for the issue. Is there a way to fix and or avoid this completely?

Under BIOS control keyboard works. Enter password and Windows 8.0 takes over. Worked well until I ran update which had 88 updates. Upon restart , keyboard will not work. (Windows 8.0 was installed over Windows w/ all updates)

The remove button is greyed out. This applies to Windows 8.1 not Windows 8.

Setup Installation :: Windows 8 Keyboard Input Method
Aug 13, 2014During the installation stages of windows 8, I choose English language and US as keyboard input method. But after few weeks later, I bought a new British style keyboard and in control panel I replaced US method with English (United Kingdom). While I'm logged into the operating system the input method works correctly, but after every shutdown on a next user log in when I'm writing my password it's still English US method that not corespondent with the keys on the keyboard. This not happening if I put the system in sleep mode.
