New Windows 8 Install - Keyboard Delay And Freeze Up

Sep 24, 2013

I installed Windows 8 standard package a few weeks ago on a AMD FX-8350/Asus MBO, 16 GB RAM, 128 GB SSD, 2x 1TB Seagate Barracuda configured as one 2 TB drive with Storage Spaces. It initially worked fine. Then when I installed a SSD optimization software from the SSD manufacturer, Samsung. I believe it was called Magician or something like that. It was a problem in that it slowed down my SSD, according to Samsung's own software, and it seemed to be the cause of keyboard freezing and/or major delay. I uninstalled it and the problem went away.

Now it has come back again. It seems to happen almost at random in any application. The mouse works fine, and never freezes, but the keyboard either has a large delay and the first character typed is lost, or it just does not respond at all. Closing the app, like IE10 and opening it again does not resolve it. Often the keyboard is still frozen.

I updated the graphics card driver to the latest from AMD. It is a Radeon HD7770. It seemed to work for a while, but it is back again. I can't think of any significant software I have installed, except perhaps the monitor calibrator, Spyder4Express. However all it should do is create a new monitor ICC profile.

The sad part is I had nearly this exact same problem with another computer years ago, and I cannot remember how I resolved it. I was using McAfee AV and ZoneAlarm, and I may have given both of them the boot. Currently all I am running is the default MS Defender AV. I've reset the Security in IE10 to default.

Can't think of more to do. I have Process Explorer and tried running it. I am not very familiar with this software, but from what I could see the processor is not loaded nor is any significant memory used when it the keyboard is locked. I can't seem to catch it doing anything bad. I checked the batteries on the keyboard as it is wireless and they are good. I have a faint recollection of having a wireless phone system that was conflicting, but since this new computer install I am using the same wireless router, same wireless phone system, and same wireless keyboard. It would seem unlikely out of the blue for them to start conflicting.

Hardware Drivers :: Win 8.1 - Logitech K330 Keyboard And Mouse Randomly Freeze

Oct 15, 2013

I have recently upgraded to windows 8. I was previously using a logitech mk320 mouse/keyboard and experiencing the same issues. So I purchased the new K330 setup that is windows 8 compatible, but again same issues. A little less frequently, but same issues.

Basically the keyboard will randomly have a 3 to 15 second delay when typing. To make it worse when it does finally pick up it leaves out letters making it very hard to type anything. Secondly the mouse will also randomly be very choppy. Not completely unresponsive, but skip over large sections of the screen. It's almost like the batteries are dying, but I have replace them 2 times now with fresh ones.

Hardware Drivers :: Keyboard Not Working Correctly After Win 8 Install

Oct 27, 2012

my keyboard doesn't work correctly. In most programs and on webpages, the number keys do not work nor do the special characters accessed through the shift key. Sometimes they act like the space bar, other times they repeat the previously typed alpha character.

All works perfectly in MS Word. The numbers on the keypad do work in all programs. I've checked the control panel and can't find any settings that appear to influence this - no accessibility settings, nothing.

Shutdown Delay Over 2 Minutes After Upgrading To Windows 8.1

Mar 9, 2014

Yesterday I upgraded from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 on my Dell XPS desktop (i7-3770, 8 GB RAM). Now, when I shutdown, sleep, or hibernate, it takes over 2 minutes for the unit to do what used to take very little time. I reinstalled the video driver (both latest and two most recent version) and each time things are back to normal the first time I do it, but after that, the 2 minute, 12 second, or so, delay reappears. I have a NVidea 620 graphics card. My Acer laptop using its built-in Intel graphics system does not have this problem and never did. I am running Classic Shell on both machines. My desktop was fine before upgrading to Windows 8.1.

Maintenance :: Windows 8 - How To Disable Unwanted Autostart Delay

Dec 7, 2012

Windows 8 waits several seconds before it start my programs that are set to auto start. I would like to make Windows 8 behave like older variant. This new feature is of no value to me and annoying. The apps start too late and steal focus, or I just watch and wait stupidly for the apps to start while the system is basically idle... It's a lot quicke to start the apps manually lot of the, which of course defeats one main reason for auto-start.

Maintenance :: Delay Chkdsk Startup Time At OS Boot - Windows 8 And 8.1

Apr 8, 2014

Delay Chkdsk start up time at OS Boot | Windows 8 & 8.1 (Or Disable Altogether)

Previous to Windows 8 if Chkdsk needed to run without prompt the user had the ability to cancel if so desired. Since Windows 8, the user input has been removed.

At the least, you can change the delay setting as follows:

Modify DWORD "AutoChkTimeout"

IMAGE ONE:

1. Open Regedit:
One way to open regedit is to hit the Winkey+S and type regedit, hit enter when you see it appear.

2. Navigate to the following registry key:

Code: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlSession Manager 3. Click on the folder "Session Manager"

4. In the right hand pane you will see registry values. Right click on the value "AutoChkTimeout" and select "Modify" (See image one)
If the value is missing, create it (See image two)

5. Change the "Value data:" to the desired delay time of your choice.
e.x. Changing the value to 10, will delay the Chkdsk start time by 10 seconds.
Click OK, close the registry.
Finished.

Create DWORD "AutoChkTimeout"

IMAGE TWO:

If the registry value "AutoChkTimeout" is not present:
Right click on an empty space in the right hand pain (in folder "Session Manager")

Select "New"
Select "DWORD (32-Bit) Value
Name it "AutoChkTimeout" (No Quotation Marks "")
Follow step 4. above.

Remember:
Name = AutoChkTimeout
Base = Hexadecimal
Value Data = Delaytime (in seconds)

DISABLE automatic repair in Windows 8 & Windows 8.1

If you would like to disable automatic repair altogether:

1. Open the command prompt as Administrator (an elevated instance). If you have no idea how to open an elevated command prompt. Hit Winkey+S type in cmd.exe, when it appears, right click on the name and choose "Run as administrator"

2. Type the following text into the cmd window

Code: bcdedit /set recoveryenabled NO

You have now disabled the Automatic repair function.
To reinable: Follow step 1 and in step 2 type in the following text:

Code: bcdedit /set recoveryenabled YES

Having disabled the Automatic repair feature, you can follow Brink's tutorial on manually running Chkdsk > Here:

Delay In New Folder / File To Show Up?

Oct 13, 2013

My laptop is top of the range spec one with Core i7, 8GB RAM, Dedicated GPU, every thing else work super fast, i am very annoyed by this one problem which i have been observing When ever i create a new folder/file or download a new file or rename a new file it does not immediately show up, if i try to open the renamed file it says windows cannot find that file (because its actually been renamed but does not yet show up in the folder), Every time i have to press F5 to refresh the folder or the desktop so the computer refreshes and shows the changes made (i.e new folder, renamed folder, new file etc...)

Is there a way so computer immediately shows the change rather than me having to close and open that folder or refresh the page every time i rename or create a file ?

The same can be said for the icons in the start menu. The biggest problem is that even if i run the icon such as firefox, before the icon has fully loaded, the program will not run. No programs will run until 13 seconds after boot once the icons have loaded.

Setting Delay Time When Deleting In-Use File

Aug 27, 2014

Windows XP has a delay time of a few seconds when deleting an in-use file. (Example: when an mp3 file is open and you delete that file, Windows XP will say that it is deleting the file for about 3 seconds, then says that it cannot delete the file, since the file is open).

I want to set the settings in Windows 8 to do exactly the same thing. Windows 8's default setting is to immediately state that the mp3 file is in use and cannot delete it. I want Windows 8 to wait for 3 seconds until it states that it cannot delete it.

Reason why I need this option is that I delete the file first, then I change the mp3 file so it is no longer in use. That's the only order of doing this thing that I do.

Delay The Time Between Monitor Off And Workstation Lock?

Sep 29, 2013

I like having my monitor power off soon after activity stops. Currently, I have it powering off after 2 minutes of inactivity. I am also very big on locking my PC when I step away. So, I also have the screen saver kick in after 2 minutes. (Of course, I never even see a screen saver because the monitor is off. And, in fact, my screen saver is set to "None". So this setting essentially means the PC is set to lock after 2 minutes.)

However, what often happens is that I'm sitting at the PC, and the monitor turns off, but I don't want it to lock. I move the mouse, and it's locked--even if I intervened within a second or two.

With Windows XP, I used to be able to use the ScreenSaverGracePeriod registry value to work around this. I've tried this with my Windows 8 system, but it doesn't work. I have tried using ScreenSaverGracePeriod as both REG_SZ and as DWORD.

Is there any way to delay the PC from locking after the monitor powers off by just a few seconds? I know I can have the monitor power off after 2 minutes but set the screen saver to 3 minutes, but I'd like to reduce the delay to a matter of seconds, if that is possible.

Setup Installation :: 30 Second Boot Delay With New 250GB Samsung SSD

Now, when I boot, it sits there for 30 seconds flashing the hard drive light blinking then proceeds to boot normally. All BIOS settings are default.

Hardware details in Specs.

Booting from the 128GB SSD was fine, no obvious delays.

What might be causing this? Could the new SSD be defective?

Hard Drive Activity - Long Delay When Going To Sleep

Apr 19, 2013

I noticed an issue with my PC. I always put my desktop into S3 sleep when not in use, normally this happens almost instantly, but now it takes 10+ seconds after the monitor goes black before the system actually powers down.

I had been using Windows 7, but a week ago I did an upgrade to Windows 8. I'm not sure exactly when this behavior started, but I just noticed it earlier today.

I have Hibernate disabled (powercfg -h off) as well as System Restore; so I don't know what could be causing this. The hard drive LED stays lit during the entire delay.

Maintenance :: 8.1 RTM - Slight Delay When Searching Control Panel Items?

Sep 20, 2013

I have three machines that were running windows 8 on them. I used my MSDN to upgrade all 3 to 8.1 RTM. The only odd thing is search on just one of the PCs.

On this PC, when searching for items found in the control panel (such as "Indexing Options", etc) it seems to have an artificial 2-3 second delay before displaying the results under the search field. On the other two machines, they're near instant.

For those with 8.1, try it on your machine. Search for Indexing Options of File History and see how long it takes to show up, either by hitting Start and typing or Win+S...

Is there any reason why this may be? I've already rebuilt the index and decreased the size of it, as well as rebooted several times and ran CCleaner a bit. The only difference is this machine is Win 8.1 Pro, while the others are regular. I have disabled the Bing web search on all three and all other settings have been left alone.

Windows 8 64 Bit - System Will Freeze Completely?

Jun 15, 2013

I just completed a brand new build and then installed Windows 8 64 bit on the brand new PC. It installed without problems and boots up ok. But while in windows, The screen will go black for a few moments on occasion, then the no video input message comes up, then after a few moments the screen will come back. Happens randomly. Also, the system will freeze - either for a few moments and then come back, or it will feeeze completely and i have to force power down with power switch. Also, I was online and trying to download and the system was stuttering - I could literally hear the hard drive make a stuttering noise. Maintenance :: Windows 8 100% Disk Usage Causes Freeze?

Mar 15, 2014

Edit: laptop might also chrash while in airplane mode, however making an internet connection is still a surefire way to make it crash.

Seemingly out of nowhere my laptop has been freezing usually minutes after I started it up. I can then restart my laptop and it works for another few minutes and freezes again. While looking at task manager I noticed the disk going up to 100%, however the individual processes did not account for this 100% use.

I tried to increase/decrease my virtual memory but this did not seem to have any effect.

When My computer makes an internet connection for something, a browser or a game, it will skyrocket the disk usage to 100% and freeze. I can start my laptop with all processes and services enabled and when I put it on airport mode nothing will be wrong. however once I enable internet and surf around for about 1 minute my computer will freeze. this happened for multiple browsers and also for multiple games. Also I am currently typing this from my brothers laptop with the same internet connection.

Maintenance :: Windows 8.1 Freeze Up (Disk Usage 100% - 0 R/W Speeds)

Apr 11, 2014

I've been having some major problems with Windows 8.1 (and 8.1 Update) which never occurred to me in Windows 8.

What essentially happens is that the computer completely freezes up and I know that the disk usage goes to 100% as does the active time but the read speed/write speed and average response time are all 0. During this period, i cannot do anything with the machine, not even take a screenshot (And hence to poor quality of the attached picture which shows the scenario).

I've encountered this problem in all of the situations: Upgrade from Windows 8 to 8.1 via StoreUpgrade from Windows 8 to 8.1 via flash driveClean install of Windows 8.1 on to a formatted partition

I've never had this problem with Windows 7 nor with Windows 8 and I've gone through the process of trying to upgrade to Windows 8.1 more than 8 times (literally) on my laptop. I've updated the drivers from the vendor site.

I also encountered this same problem on my desktop once when I performed a clean install on it but I need a stable configuration on my desktop for now for work.

The following are the steps that I've seen online as solutions to this problem and have tried all of them to no avail:

Disable superfetch and windows search servicesDisable Link State Power Management for PCI expressDisable live tilesDisable page files

The configurations for the laptop are as follows:

HP Pavilion dv6-7040tx
3rd generation Intel Core i7 3610QM8 GB of RAM750 GB SATA harddisk (Currently has three partitions plus the small partition created by windows. This problem existed even when I had a single partition. The reason I re-partitioned was ease of formatting and re-installing the OS alone without clearing my data)NVIDIA GEFORCE GT 630M 2GB graphics card.

I do have all the latest drivers from the HP website and the latest updates from windows update. Also, if I check the resource monitor, at these times, the actual disk usage is indeed at very low rates for the different processes. I've attached a snapshot of that as well (had to use a camera then too). Notice the long gap during with the disk active (blue line) is 100% but the speeds (green area) are 0.

Hardware Drivers :: Windows 8 Or 8.1 Constant Hard Freeze

May 29, 2014

I have never been able to operation windows 8 on my desktop computer, always thought it was a hard drive issue 2 days ago I get a brand new HDD and SSD for main OS, and low and behold it is the same issue, every time I try to install windows 8 or 8.1 it either during or after the installation, it completely locks up, freezes, if I'm playing music it's stuck, can't move mouse, heck with my old hard drive, I literally pulled out my hard drive was looking at my hard drive in my hand and windows 8 on the screen, frozen, this seems too iffy to not be a coincidence, but I got windows 8 to work (magically), and when I open device manager it says my PCI lan controller driver is missing.

I went online and found it on gigabyte with my motherboard z68-d3-b3 and found the driver, tried installing it, FROZE, hard reset, tried installing again, FROZE, for as I went looking for a solution I came across an article that said do not update z68-d3-b3 bios to eufi, and of course I did about the time windows 8 came out, many people have had problems with the eufi update, but could this cause my computer to crash at completely random times? it's not my hard drives I know that for a fact, I took out my laptop HDD with windows 8.1 on it and I connected it to my desktop and it still froze, used 2 other HDD and 1 SSD with windows 8 and windows 8.1, I tried both pirated and legit copies, I have a key for Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 (just no CD) I am completely lost with this MOBO, windows 7 works perfectly fine zero problems.

Windows 8 Freeze / Lockout - Boot Drive Not Detected On Restart

May 28, 2013

My setup for hard drives is a 64GB Crucial M4 SSD drive which I have Windows 8 booting from and an additional two drives (3TB Samsung for media) (1TB Samsung for programs).

I boot into Windows fine, and can run everything but after a certain amount of time (it seems very arbitrary and happens randomly) windows will slow to a crawl, lock up basically, reboot and then take me to bios screen where it doesn't even detect my boot drive anymore. To fix this I have to press the power button the tower and turn it back on in which case it boots back into windows. Then the process of locking up will occur again.

I've tried automatic repair from the Windows 8 screen which didn't result in any fix. I'm not sure how to proceed.
