Here is a list of everything I noticed all of which happened at once. I believe I put my computer into sleep mode which i normally don't do and also there was a windows update to defender that I installed that I have already uninstalled to see if it was the issue.
1. My Charms Bar and Switcher Hot Corners don't work out of the blue!
2. I also noticed that I can't drag close windows apps such as the video player or photo viewer or apps store. I have to Alt+F4 to close everything.
3. I can bring up the charms menu by using Win+C, and it does work after that point. Although again I cannot close anything with the Esc key or drag to close.
4.I can click the lower left hot corner to get my desktop or start menu but no small preview window appears and I can only do this if I am currently on my desktop!
For instance: I am in Google chrome now typing this now with the task bar visible. If I were to put my mouse in the lower left corner of the screen and left click nothing happens. If I go back to my empty desktop then click in the same spot it brings me to my start menu. But again no preview of my start menu. I also haven't seen the hot switcher task bar on the left side of my screen since this all started.
I called Microsoft and they said to refresh windows but that I would lose all my applications I installed since I installed Windows 8.
I've just received my new desktop computer with Win-8. I have it password protected, however. It logs me off within a minute or two. How to I change this setting in Win-8.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI've tried everything and the boot timeout always reverts to 30 seconds. I've used the internal boot menu, msconfig and easybcd to change it to 10 seconds but it always reverts back. I even tried using the win 7 text menu with the same results. Currently I use the graphical menu because I like it with my touch screen. what would be causing it not to hold?

I do not have touch screen so all my taps are with a mouse. When I open the gear icon on the charms bar all is ok and all choices are shown. The only one that doesnt work is "Change PC Settings". When I click on it nothing happens except a small jump of the screen.

Been running 8.1 since it was released, and everything seems fine, except for one recurring bug that I'm having. My metro app switcher bar (the one on the left hand side of the screen) gets "stuck" and the won't pop out to show the running apps. Obviously, a reboot brings it back.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently installed a virtual desktop application called Dexpot. Since then, I have noticed several unnamed applications show up in the Alt+Tab switcher. Most of them link to a metro settings page. One goes to search, another is called 'Immersive Background', and another called 'snapped desktop'.
So I uninstalled Dexpot and rebooted, but the apps are still there. I believe these apps are always running but are hidden from the regular Alt+Tab menu, and that Dexpot has messed up Z-orders or something. Here's a photo (Can't take screenshots with the switcher on) : [URL] ....
Windows 8 Pro.
On a semi-regular basis (two or three times a week) my computer will crash and shut down instead of sleeping.
I downloaded and installed the symbols and debugger, and the bugcheck points this:
FAILURE_ID_HASH_STRING: km:0x9f_3_power_down_athwbx_image_pci.sys
athwbx.sys is the Atheros Wireless card for my ASUS p8z77-v Pro.
I've already updated the drivers to the newest (10.0.0.270) but the problem still occurs.
Occasionally, the same card will lose all wireless connectivity. Only a restart fixes it, and the computer doesn't always restart in that case - it hangs during the shutdown process and I have to hit the reset switch.
I'd like that confirmed before I bug ASUS about a possible replacement. (Or replace it myself.)
Should I update the other drivers? ASUS website is a few months old at this point, they're extremely slow at posting updates, so I'd have to track them down manually.
I included the extract from the diagnostic tool.
I have a new Dell Inspiron 15r as of this Christmas, running Windows 8. I ran the upgrade to 8.1 but I still have a problem with my cursor wanting to "hover click" on links or browser tabs, as well as being stuck in the down position, when I'm not even pressing on the touchpad left button. I end up selecting an entire region of stuff while moving the cursor across the screen.
I can't figure out what to change or configure in Control Panel, or is it in the Dell Touchpad configuration utility?
In Control Panel/Ease of Access Center/Make Your Mouse Easier To Use I have unchecked "Activate a Window by hovering over it with a mouse." Still happens.
I keep getting Clock Watchdog Timeout and it is pretty annoying because the only way to get rid of that pesky blue screen is to turn the power strip off and then my clock, printer, TV, lamp and everything goes off. Is there a problem with my CPU or drivers??
View 9 Replies View RelatedYesterday I upgraded from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 on my Dell XPS desktop (i7-3770, 8 GB RAM). Now, when I shutdown, sleep, or hibernate, it takes over 2 minutes for the unit to do what used to take very little time. I reinstalled the video driver (both latest and two most recent version) and each time things are back to normal the first time I do it, but after that, the 2 minute, 12 second, or so, delay reappears. I have a NVidea 620 graphics card. My Acer laptop using its built-in Intel graphics system does not have this problem and never did. I am running Classic Shell on both machines. My desktop was fine before upgrading to Windows 8.1.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI installed Windows 8 standard package a few weeks ago on a AMD FX-8350/Asus MBO, 16 GB RAM, 128 GB SSD, 2x 1TB Seagate Barracuda configured as one 2 TB drive with Storage Spaces. It initially worked fine. Then when I installed a SSD optimization software from the SSD manufacturer, Samsung. I believe it was called Magician or something like that. It was a problem in that it slowed down my SSD, according to Samsung's own software, and it seemed to be the cause of keyboard freezing and/or major delay. I uninstalled it and the problem went away.
Now it has come back again. It seems to happen almost at random in any application. The mouse works fine, and never freezes, but the keyboard either has a large delay and the first character typed is lost, or it just does not respond at all. Closing the app, like IE10 and opening it again does not resolve it. Often the keyboard is still frozen.
I updated the graphics card driver to the latest from AMD. It is a Radeon HD7770. It seemed to work for a while, but it is back again. I can't think of any significant software I have installed, except perhaps the monitor calibrator, Spyder4Express. However all it should do is create a new monitor ICC profile.
The sad part is I had nearly this exact same problem with another computer years ago, and I cannot remember how I resolved it. I was using McAfee AV and ZoneAlarm, and I may have given both of them the boot. Currently all I am running is the default MS Defender AV. I've reset the Security in IE10 to default.
Can't think of more to do. I have Process Explorer and tried running it. I am not very familiar with this software, but from what I could see the processor is not loaded nor is any significant memory used when it the keyboard is locked. I can't seem to catch it doing anything bad. I checked the batteries on the keyboard as it is wireless and they are good. I have a faint recollection of having a wireless phone system that was conflicting, but since this new computer install I am using the same wireless router, same wireless phone system, and same wireless keyboard. It would seem unlikely out of the blue for them to start conflicting.
I have followed this tutorial to have my account lock after 15 minutes, and it does not work. The account stays open for as long as the computer is on, which is extremely frustrating. This is the biggest thing I hate about Windows 8. Why has this important security/privacy feature been overlooked?
View 8 Replies View RelatedWindows 8 waits several seconds before it start my programs that are set to auto start. I would like to make Windows 8 behave like older variant. This new feature is of no value to me and annoying. The apps start too late and steal focus, or I just watch and wait stupidly for the apps to start while the system is basically idle... It's a lot quicke to start the apps manually lot of the, which of course defeats one main reason for auto-start.

Not only on Windows 8.1 but on Windows 8 as well ever since I am on the new system, I get too many times 'This page cannot be displayed'. This happens like a page timeout where it takes it longer to load than allowed..
I have been on Ethernet 50 mbps and there seems to be no problem - I can load 10 tabs at a time and they will load. The problem happens when with wi fi modem and supposedly no one else uses the connection, with speedtest I get 17 mbps download, 8 ms ping, 10 upload or smth.
At first I thought it's specific sites doing it but heck it can happen anywhere, forums with just background images, this is where it mostly happens btw, not google images or places with just many images, even forums with simple UI interface, emails.
Is this a lan card issue? Hardly, Ethernet connection is good but maybe it is separate. the modem? If I try smartphone with the wifi which is usually disconnected to not eat the traffic and connectivity, it works fine but maybe Android works too differently. With the notebook I've been having this for 1 year and getting annoying, haven't changed the place yet but 17 mbps should be good enough
In few games, I may lag but this happens rarely in most cases such speed is fine and yet for forums and such it can't load a darn page until I refresh 2-3-5 times... (sometimes without the pictures). This forum loads fine but others and sometimes mail services do not.
Delay Chkdsk start up time at OS Boot | Windows 8 & 8.1 (Or Disable Altogether)
Previous to Windows 8 if Chkdsk needed to run without prompt the user had the ability to cancel if so desired. Since Windows 8, the user input has been removed.
At the least, you can change the delay setting as follows:
Modify DWORD "AutoChkTimeout"
IMAGE ONE:
1. Open Regedit:
One way to open regedit is to hit the Winkey+S and type regedit, hit enter when you see it appear.
2. Navigate to the following registry key:
Code: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlSession Manager 3. Click on the folder "Session Manager"
4. In the right hand pane you will see registry values. Right click on the value "AutoChkTimeout" and select "Modify" (See image one)
If the value is missing, create it (See image two)
5. Change the "Value data:" to the desired delay time of your choice.
e.x. Changing the value to 10, will delay the Chkdsk start time by 10 seconds.
Click OK, close the registry.
Finished.
Create DWORD "AutoChkTimeout"
IMAGE TWO:
If the registry value "AutoChkTimeout" is not present:
Right click on an empty space in the right hand pain (in folder "Session Manager")
Select "New"
Select "DWORD (32-Bit) Value
Name it "AutoChkTimeout" (No Quotation Marks "")
Follow step 4. above.
Remember:
Name = AutoChkTimeout
Base = Hexadecimal
Value Data = Delaytime (in seconds)
DISABLE automatic repair in Windows 8 & Windows 8.1
If you would like to disable automatic repair altogether:
1. Open the command prompt as Administrator (an elevated instance). If you have no idea how to open an elevated command prompt. Hit Winkey+S type in cmd.exe, when it appears, right click on the name and choose "Run as administrator"
2. Type the following text into the cmd window
Code: bcdedit /set recoveryenabled NO
You have now disabled the Automatic repair function.
To reinable: Follow step 1 and in step 2 type in the following text:
Code: bcdedit /set recoveryenabled YES
Having disabled the Automatic repair feature, you can follow Brink's tutorial on manually running Chkdsk > Here:

View 4 Replies View RelatedI was perplexed about the slow logon process of Windows 8 considering the fact that it starts from an SSD.I have Fast-Boot disabled. The login windows comes up really quick, but after signing in it seemed annoyingly slow to me, like it was waiting intensionally 30 seconds for some cup of coffee before the desktop shows up.
I've googled a bit and found this, and old WIN7 bug still seems to be valid with Windows 8:The Welcome screen may be displayed for 30 seconds during the logon process after you set a solid color as the desktop background in Windows 7 or in Windows Server 2008 R2
Even though I use a wallpaper background, the workaround with the registry hack solved my slow login times. Now logon is as fast as I expect it.

create a new DWORD called DelayedDesktopSwitchTimeout and set its value to 5.
It might take several boot up's to work, but after 4 times it worked for me.
I need to find out why my account randomly asks me to re-enter my password. They do seem random (i.e. not a set time interval, not after system changes, computer is not going to sleep mode, etc...) and I do not see any setting anywhere that would cause a system login to time-out. I am providing three screen shots of where it asks this when it happens and here is the text in case people need to search for this same problem in the future.
Text alerts:
"Click here to enter your most recent password"
"You need to sign in with your most recent Microsoft password"

As above - i get these two errors sometimes when I'm merely surfing the web.. or when i'm editing photos in lightroom as well.

As you see, it really looks like a video card problem related to atikmpag.sys. I think in cases like this the first thing to try is updating the drivers but unfortunately, since I'm running Windows on Boot Camp, it looks like there aren't suitable drivers apart from the ones I'm already using. I tried to install the ATI CCC 12.8 beta 2 (that is the only thing that I can run) that seem to suit my system, but that didn't work.
I have been suggested to look into the power settings of the video card (because they may lead to system instability), and specifically I tried playing a bit with the AMD PowerPlay - Technology in the CCC. Anyway, when I open the tab, the lists show up as blank and there is really no option I can work on (see attachment #2). It looks like my video card doesn't support this feature, even if I think it definitely should like it says in the AMD page: AMD PowerPlay.
My laptop is top of the range spec one with Core i7, 8GB RAM, Dedicated GPU, every thing else work super fast, i am very annoyed by this one problem which i have been observing When ever i create a new folder/file or download a new file or rename a new file it does not immediately show up, if i try to open the renamed file it says windows cannot find that file (because its actually been renamed but does not yet show up in the folder), Every time i have to press F5 to refresh the folder or the desktop so the computer refreshes and shows the changes made (i.e new folder, renamed folder, new file etc...)
Is there a way so computer immediately shows the change rather than me having to close and open that folder or refresh the page every time i rename or create a file ?
I want to be rid of all screen this take over stuff and just use a traditional interface.
View 1 Replies View RelatedMy problem is simply this, when i boot my pc into windows the boot takes maybe 3 seconds to desktop, but the icons on the desktop do not appear for another 10 seconds. The same can be said for the icons in the start menu. The biggest problem is that even if i run the icon such as firefox, before the icon has fully loaded, the program will not run. No programs will run until 13 seconds after boot once the icons have loaded.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am using a Surface Pro 3 running Windows 8.1 Pro
I have already turned off Connected Standby. I KNOW there has to be a way to get back the ability to make separate settings for sleeping / turning off the display.
To be clear, I want to have the display ONLY turn off after 3 minutes, but NEVER sleep my device.
Windows XP has a delay time of a few seconds when deleting an in-use file. (Example: when an mp3 file is open and you delete that file, Windows XP will say that it is deleting the file for about 3 seconds, then says that it cannot delete the file, since the file is open).
I want to set the settings in Windows 8 to do exactly the same thing. Windows 8's default setting is to immediately state that the mp3 file is in use and cannot delete it. I want Windows 8 to wait for 3 seconds until it states that it cannot delete it.
Reason why I need this option is that I delete the file first, then I change the mp3 file so it is no longer in use. That's the only order of doing this thing that I do.
I like having my monitor power off soon after activity stops. Currently, I have it powering off after 2 minutes of inactivity. I am also very big on locking my PC when I step away. So, I also have the screen saver kick in after 2 minutes. (Of course, I never even see a screen saver because the monitor is off. And, in fact, my screen saver is set to "None". So this setting essentially means the PC is set to lock after 2 minutes.)
However, what often happens is that I'm sitting at the PC, and the monitor turns off, but I don't want it to lock. I move the mouse, and it's locked--even if I intervened within a second or two.
With Windows XP, I used to be able to use the ScreenSaverGracePeriod registry value to work around this. I've tried this with my Windows 8 system, but it doesn't work. I have tried using ScreenSaverGracePeriod as both REG_SZ and as DWORD.
Is there any way to delay the PC from locking after the monitor powers off by just a few seconds? I know I can have the monitor power off after 2 minutes but set the screen saver to 3 minutes, but I'd like to reduce the delay to a matter of seconds, if that is possible.
Is there any way of opening the charms bar programmatically?
I've got a simple vbs script that uses the GUID tor searching apps, which then uses "send keys" to find a specific app and open it. The app is just a photo gallery I use in place of my screensaver. The last step I want to add to the script is to open the charms bar (just so I have my app running and over the top I can see the clock.
I currently just trigger the vbs on idle via task scheduler.
