Any Way Of Opening Charms Bar Programmatically?
Jan 30, 2013Is there any way of opening the charms bar programmatically?
I've got a simple vbs script that uses the GUID tor searching apps, which then uses "send keys" to find a specific app and open it. The app is just a photo gallery I use in place of my screensaver. The last step I want to add to the script is to open the charms bar (just so I have my app running and over the top I can see the clock.
I currently just trigger the vbs on idle via task scheduler.

Feb 26, 2014How to permanently disable the stupid charms bar? I downloaded this program called SkipMetroSuite and checked all the appropriate boxes, but it doesn't seem to work. The damn charms bar keeps popping up when I least expect it.

I'm pretty sure there was content in the Settings and Files screens? It should have listings?
I lost the Apps as well (blank). I KNOW they were there, so I did a Refresh.
All Apps came back, but Settings and Files are still blank.
Computer Does Not Turn Off When Shut Down From Charms Bar
Oct 20, 2013I built a custom PC about a month ago, and did a clean install of an OEM copy of Windows 8 with no problems. Upon launch this past Thursday, I downloaded the Windows 8.1 update from the store, which I like except for one problem:
Shutting down the computer by pressing the power button or "shut down" from the charms bar power menu shuts down Windows, but leaves the computer itself on and running, case fans spinning and all. Oddly enough shutting down the computer using the menu I get by right-clicking the new start button shuts down the computer properly, and that is the only way to do it without flipping the computer's power switch. That said, I would still like it to work 100% properly.
Charms Bar And Switcher Hot Corners Don't Work
Dec 26, 2012Here is a list of everything I noticed all of which happened at once. I believe I put my computer into sleep mode which i normally don't do and also there was a windows update to defender that I installed that I have already uninstalled to see if it was the issue.
1. My Charms Bar and Switcher Hot Corners don't work out of the blue!
2. I also noticed that I can't drag close windows apps such as the video player or photo viewer or apps store. I have to Alt+F4 to close everything.
3. I can bring up the charms menu by using Win+C, and it does work after that point. Although again I cannot close anything with the Esc key or drag to close.
4.I can click the lower left hot corner to get my desktop or start menu but no small preview window appears and I can only do this if I am currently on my desktop!
For instance: I am in Google chrome now typing this now with the task bar visible. If I were to put my mouse in the lower left corner of the screen and left click nothing happens. If I go back to my empty desktop then click in the same spot it brings me to my start menu. But again no preview of my start menu. I also haven't seen the hot switcher task bar on the left side of my screen since this all started.
I called Microsoft and they said to refresh windows but that I would lose all my applications I installed since I installed Windows 8.
Lost Charms Sidebar Windows 8
Dec 1, 2013I installed dropbox to my yahoo e-mail account in order to get some important forms. I allowed changes to be made to my computer the dropbox worked well. Then I tried to pull out the charms bar to shut down my computer and it was GONE!!!! How do I get it back?

Aug 21, 2014Is there a way to disable the bottom right corner charms bar gesture? i can disable the hint no problem with DisableCharmsHint. however moving the mouse up the right side of the screen (starting from the bottom right corner) will still open the charms bar.
DisableTRCorner will both disable the top right charms hint AND the "gesture". Moving the mouse down the right side of the screen will not open the charms bar.
i cant seem to find a way to do the same for the bottom right. i dont understand why microsoft couldnt have added a "DisableBRCorner" registry entry that functions the same as DisableTRCorner.
EXE File For Charms -> Shutdown Button
May 12, 2014 what .exe file is hidden under the "Shutdown" button in the Charms bar. Most of you will probably think it's just the system32/shutdown.exe, but this doesn't seem to be the case.
Why do I care and how do I know? I have a Razer Mamba with charging dock that needs voltage on USB when the PC is off. The problem is that when I shut the PC with a shutdown.exe shortcut, the USB voltage goes off (and no, I can't enable it in my BIOS), whereas it miraculously stays on when I turn my desktop off using the Charms bar button.
I tried the hibernate.exe shortcut too, but this only hibernates the PC, without closing the apps - this I don't need nor want.
I need the proper .exe file for setting up a shortcut for my keyboard so that I can close the PC with one button, instead of going through all that Metro bullshit hassle.
I browsed the web in search for all the shutdown types used in Windows 8.1, but generally found only three methods: full shutdown, hibernate or sleep.

Aug 19, 2013I bought one of these Logitech Touch Lapdesk N600 Review | Everything USB It has a slide out touchpad and it is really really good as it is big -- BUT -- I can't get it to do the swipe from the edge thing to slide out the Charms bar (if that's what it is called) Of course I can use the keyboard to slide the bar out, but I'd like to be able to use the trackpad. The built in trackpad on the laptop does it, so I don't think it is unreasonable to expect the N600 to do that too. Or is it?
I have tried the "latest" software but that has made no difference.
how to make this happen or is there a better USB/WiFi trackpad I can get that does?

Aug 27, 2014For more than a week now, the above situation have been occurring. I have "scoured" the web and tried a lot of "solutions" and none as at yet have normalized my situation.
I am suspecting that I might need a registry solution, since I cannot refresh my installation- I upgraded to win 8 from win 7 online.
Also, the Skype app crashes almost as soon as it finishes loading and returns to the start menu. But, there is a sign it is still running and whenever you click on it, it trips off again.
I have uninstalled and re-installed several times, ran the apps troubleshooters many times, checked that the time service is running, synchronized this and that, etc to no avail.
My Mail Live tile do not have the option to turn on/off live update but the Calendar and People tiles have it yet none is updating.
Apps / Software :: Windows 8 Not Saving Autorotate Of Images In Gallery / Viewer Apps?
Nov 5, 2012i had a bunch of images of a chest of drawers i wanted to sell. On my windows 7 PC all the previews showed the images sideways (landscape when they needed to be viewed in portrait). this is not a problem - expected behavior.
On the windows 8 PC all the images appeared portrait and in the correct orientation. images looked perfect. i understand that windows 8 reads the exif data and autorotates the images on previews and in the galleries. a neat trick.
On the windows 8 PC i put an ad on the website that i wanted to sell the drawers, and when i selected the images they previewed portrait in the file browser too. when uploaded the images all came out sideways (landscape) on the website.
this might seem like user error or a rudimentary problem at first, and trust me i have many years as a system admin under my belt, it is going to cause many problems of a similar nature for every user that touches it.
Windows 8 leads you to believe that your images are correctly oriented firstly, and then does not provide an easy way to adjust and save them even if you do know that they need to be adjusted. even in the windows photo viewer on the desktop (non metro viewer) you can rotate an image as much as you like with the buttons and it will not auto save it like it does in Win7.
In Win7 you could see that the image needs adjustment and its a good prompt for you to action, so you open it, rotate it, and it is automatically saved by the photo viewer so then whatever you do with it, it will be oriented correctly.
what i find absolutely crazy is that windows knows the image needs to be rotated, but does not save the image after it autorotates it, so it lulls you into a false sense of security.

This update was unticked in the 'Update and Recovery' section. Every other update had a checkbox ticked, this one didn't.
Other changes bought along by installing this update:
- New applications in the 'Apps' section of the Start menu are now highlighted with a greybox.
- Shut down options now in the start menu (and search, I'm not sure)
One extra thing that seems to be around depending on... something.
This one's related with Chrome. Usually when you start typing in the url box, your search terms are cut off with a rounded border going around. This box has disappeared with the latest update, but I have seen this happening in earlier versions of Windows.

Apr 1, 2014I normally only use 2 apps: the Mail and the Video, and even after I close these two apps, when I take a look at the Processes tab in the Task Manager, they are still there, there's no more CPU usage but they keep using Memory, which is usually a lot. So every time I want to actually close an app I have to open up the Task Manager, go to the Process tab and kill them off there, otherwise they'll keep using my memory.

People App Opens then Crashes to Desktop
I have a new Dell laptop running Windows 8.1 Core Edition. After only a week I found most of the apps would crash to the Desktop on opening. I thought I had solved the problem by creating a new user account and reinstalling the apps but that only worked for a week before the same problem reappeared.
This is what I have discovered to date:
Initially most apps crashed on openingReinstalling the apps made many of them work but there are still some issues e.g. selecting Maps within Bing weather causes the app to crashThe apps work fine in a new user account or in other local accounts I have not used much to dateNone of the steps recommended in Apps and Tiles Not Working or Responding: Fix in Windows 8 solves the problemI've spent an hour with Microsoft Support who have found no obvious problem and have escalated the problem to the next tier
The problem appears to be due to access rights and priveliges in user accounts since the apps work in other accounts or if I create a new account.
Where the apps are located for each user account and whether there is way of checking that they are set up to have the correct access rights and privileges.

Dec 18, 2013About three days ago, all new style apps stopped working. I click on the tile, get a deep blue screen, and nothing else. On the left side of the screen, I can see the app as if it is working (just the name of the app, not content), so I can close the window and get back to desktop. The same applies to the STORE app. The only tiles that work, are the links to desktop applications, which open correctly on the desktop. The fault also affects all windows system apps. For example if I search on the start screen for "windows update", I can access "Windows update" as it just opens a window on the desktop, but if I click on "Windows update settings" nothing happens. The same is true with all windows system apps that open in the new start screen system.
I've uninstalled two Microsoft updates that were installed over the past three days, no change. I uninstalled AVAST, no change, so I reinstalled it! I tried restoring the system, but found that I had only one restore, and that was corrupted. Very strange. Without access to many windows system apps, the computer is really limited. The desktop seems to be working OK. I can't refresh the PC, as firstly it is a system app that runs from the start screen, and secondly because I upgraded from win 8 to 8.1 online, this can't be done anyway, as I don't have a disc. I'm really trying to avoid reinstalling windows 8!
(Pavilion dv6, i7 processor, 6GB ram, originally win7, then I upgraded to win 8 and now 8.1. I've been running 8.1 for some months without problems, just occasionally on start-up from sleep, I get "error in non-cached memory" BSOD, and the system restarts.)

I consider myself an advanced user, but I still overlook a lot of things and make mistakes like everyone.
Basically, Windows 8.1's Metro apps and tiles keep refreshing to default settings like it's the first time I've used them or opened them.
When I go to use Skype, it will always ask if it is allowed to use my webcam and microphone. It seems to remember the settings for a while, then forgets them.
I'm assuming this is CCleaner related, but I unchecked all of the settings that correspond to the Metro applications, and this changes nothing.
I'm unsure if I am actually deleting important information Windows needs without knowing. I usually delete logs on top of the usual things to keep my computer clean.
