View 1 RepliesSo I am using Windows 8 not pro, and I have moved the task bar to the top off my screen and set to autohide, but now when ever anything opens windows places it at the top of the screen and underneath the taskbar, is there a way to make windows open down the screen slightly, as I fight with the task bar to move the window.

I have a new Dell Inspiron 15r as of this Christmas, running Windows 8. I ran the upgrade to 8.1 but I still have a problem with my cursor wanting to "hover click" on links or browser tabs, as well as being stuck in the down position, when I'm not even pressing on the touchpad left button. I end up selecting an entire region of stuff while moving the cursor across the screen.
I can't figure out what to change or configure in Control Panel, or is it in the Dell Touchpad configuration utility?
In Control Panel/Ease of Access Center/Make Your Mouse Easier To Use I have unchecked "Activate a Window by hovering over it with a mouse." Still happens.
I was looking around to see where I could change my Mouse Sensitivity and I found a post on some website. It said to search "Change how your mouse works" in Settings. So I did, and it brought me to this screen: So then I saw you could change it to black and stuff. So when I saw that you couldn't change mouse sensitivity I switched it back to white and X'd the window. But my mouse is like that really low-resolution mouse pointer like in Windows XP.

It did not do this with windows 7.
I have had to do a system restore on my desktop 2 times because the Microsoft update rendered my windows 8 desktop useless unless in safe mode, THEN it showed my mouse pointer. the unifying software shows the little orange unifying logo every time i move my mouse, but no pointer. so i just disabled Microsoft updates.
On the laptop, it's my friends and his mousepad/trackpad died so i gave him my old mx anywhere k360 keyboard and tried to pair it with the software, SAME issue. I am not going to system restore his laptop but i believe the mouse that's on my desktop is the 810 gaming mouse? I had to do a system restore twice and now it's happening on my friends laptop.
I disabled windows updates and restarted my computer because i installed a program. when it booted, again, no mouse pointer again, so it's not the windows update. so i had to do a system restore again....
I'm using a Windows 8 64-bit ASUS VivoBook S200E as home media centre. The player is MPC-HC and the Bluetooth remote uses mouse movements and keypresses to browse the playlist and control playback. It's working very nicely, except for one problem - the mouse pointer is never visible! The only way to activate it is by making gestures with the touchpad (or with a mouse). That means getting up which isn't what remotes are all about . The computer has a touch screen, but that isn't used and doesn't affect the mouse pointer anyway.
I've been told that this behaviour is a Windows 8 "feature" for touch screen devices - the device being in touch mode by default and not displaying the mouse pointer until pointer movement is detected. I've tried all settings I could think of but nothing so far has changed this behaviour. Just to be clear, we're not talking about "hide mouse while typing" kind of behaviour. In this case, when the machine boots up there is no cursor, and it remains invisible for ever, unless you move a touchpad or mouse.
Is there some setting or registry value I could modify to change this behaviour?
Alternatively, is there some script I could use to just jiggle the mouse at startup? I've used Windows Scripting Host for things like this before, but the SendKeys method seems not to support mouse control.
I just installed windows 8 from windows 7. Everything seems fine so far except my mouse pointer is invisible. I can still click links and tabs but I just cannot see the mouse pointer. How to get it to show up?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI installed Windows 8 in another partition just to learn it and do the move later. I got no big issues but...The next day I noticed I have no mouse pointer in the "metro" interface. If I am in the desktop the pointer shows OK.
I looked carefully at boot/turn off stages and at the beginning the mouse pointer is there but suddenly disappears. The same is when power off. Suddenly appears just before the final stages of the turn off procedure.
I can see the visual signals (mouse over) and click in apps but no pointer at all.
is there a way that I can make the mouse pointer more visible? I keep loosing it
View 3 Replies View RelatedI just installed Windows 8.1 and so far so good except for one minor but extremely annoying bug.
Any file explorer window I open is not properly aligning with the mouse pointer. So if I want to click on lets say the C drive, I can't hover the mouse pointer directly above the C drive, I have to hover off to the right somewhere near until I see the highlight occur and than click. Everything seems to be off to the right.
I have had this issue to some extent from Windows 7 onwards, but it has got worse with successive Windows versions, and it's now quite insane since I 'upgraded' from Windows 8 to 8.1 (x64).
The problem is that when I drag and drop from Desktop or Explorer or my regular file manager (FreeCommander), an absolutely huge icon appears at the tip of the mouse pointer, representing the file being dragged (or, in an application, representing the block of text being dragged). Not only is this extremely distracting, but it actually makes it difficult and indeed sometimes impossible to see the exact point where I mean to be dropping the item.
I so much want to turn off that behaviour. Sure, I want a small, discreet little rectangle or tiny icon to show at the mouse pointer, so that I know that I am indeed dragging something, as I used to get a long time ago, but not this great big obstructive thing that appears for each drag and drop nowadays. It may look clever or 'cool', but it is dysfunctional and obstructive.
Recently, with my Mouse (Optical) the Mouse Pointer does not respond all of the time.

I had multiple copies of Windows 8 on the old SSD managed by Bootit Bare Metal and I copied these to the replacement SSD. Now when I start Windows 8 with new SSD the mouse pointer keeps jumping and a little blue circle appears by it.
If I go to the Task Manager and stop the Microsoft Windows Search Indexer the mouse stays still and behaves normally.
After windows 8.1 update (via windows store free upgrade) the system will go through its initializing sequence then go to a black screen w/ pointer.
I have this issue both in windows and safe mode. I have attempted to follow these steps and while I can try this, non offer the ability to install anew driver. Here it stays.
I have read this is normally caused by a graphics driver issue. In several cases the thread was closed, as the user was able to resolve the issue... but left no conclusion.

It would appear (now), during step 8 here, that the ASUS driver (VGA_Intel_Win81_64_VER101810330802) should be updated for 8.1. This seems to have been the missed step. This doesn't seem to be mentioned anywhere. This is an observation is from self deduction.
So, How do I push/install the correct driver?
I have an external hard drive for all my gigabytes of music, and I have Media Monkey installed as a portable app. This setup is great for taking my music library wherever I go, but the shortcut disappears from the taskbar any time the hard drive is powered off, or if the shortcut does stick around after booting up, the icon is blank. Is there a way to get the shortcut to persist properly? Would there be a way to edit the autoplay.ini to pin the shortcut when the drive is detected?
View 3 Replies View Relatedreceived a 8.1 computer for Xmas, but only know how to navigate in Windows XP. I am constantly closing tabs by accident and loosing data because there is not a minimize or maximize icon in front of the X on each tab like there used to be. When switching between tabs, the X is SO close to the title of the tab, that I keep accidentally hitting it.
Is there anyway to minimize a tab down to the bottom of the screen onto the taskbar where I can keep it safe? Or is there a way to add the minimize and maximize icons to each individual tab? Or has the concept of minimizing been removed from the mindset?
Also, while I'm at it, is there any way to get all the tabs down to the bottom of the screen just above the taskbar. With this big screen I am really having to stretch to get up to it.
it is possible to add toolbars to taskbar (like address, links, desktop etc. and new folder). It would be very handy if we could add godMode options likewise. is it possible?

So I have had this problem for a while, where I was not able to pin or unpin any shortcuts to my taskbar, but I had what I needed there anyways. I just upgraded to the SSD and had to move my Steam folder to do so, which left the shortcut in the taskbar as a default windows icon, which I was not able to click on or remove. I went to the users/appdata/roaming/windows/internet explorer/quick launch/taskbar folder and removed the shortcut, but then all the rest of my pinned items also disappeared!
I can right click and 'pin to taskbar', but nothing actually goes to it, or stays there if tried with an open program. If I do this, in the start menu when right clicking a program I pinned, it will show up at the bottem as pinned (IE; it says unpin from taskbar) but nothing is in the taskbar at all. I did try sfc /scannow, which had some files that were corrupted, but they were totally unrelated to anything about the taskbar, and have been resolved with the deployment and imaging tool cleanhealth command through an elevated command prompt. I have also tried the 'clean and reset taskbar' bat that I found on this site, which also did not work.
I thought maybe my profile was corrupt, so I created a new profile, but I also cannot pin anything to the taskbar on it either. Same goes for the hidden admin profile.
I cannot right click on the start menu peek window to get the power user menu, or use the windows key + x to bring that menu up... Don't know if that is totally related, but I figured it might be worth adding.
I have followed both methods here

What is happening?
Windows 8. All I want to do is pin a desktop icon to the taskbar. I've gone to every app on this pc, right clicked, left clicked, middle finger clicked, nose clicked, no luck.
Don't want to over simplify, but wouldn't it be great if one of those computer guru's had thought of this instruction?
"To put a desktop short cut on the task bar, right click on desktop and select pin to taskbar" or "just drag that huge desktop icon in windows to the taskbar"?
Why the clock stops in taskbar.

I can tell WD is a streamlined smaller version of MSE. Is this enough to be the sole AV?
How can I pin its icon to the taskbar? (I miss the reassuring green icon of MSE next to power and wi-fi signal icons )
My Start Menu or whatever it's now called on the bottom left corner of the desktop disappeared. I'm not sure if it was accidentally unpinned but I've tried and can't seem to find a way to add it back to my taskbar.
