How To Display Windows 8 Mouse Pointer By Default
Nov 13, 2013I'm using a Windows 8 64-bit ASUS VivoBook S200E as home media centre. The player is MPC-HC and the Bluetooth remote uses mouse movements and keypresses to browse the playlist and control playback. It's working very nicely, except for one problem - the mouse pointer is never visible! The only way to activate it is by making gestures with the touchpad (or with a mouse). That means getting up which isn't what remotes are all about . The computer has a touch screen, but that isn't used and doesn't affect the mouse pointer anyway.
I've been told that this behaviour is a Windows 8 "feature" for touch screen devices - the device being in touch mode by default and not displaying the mouse pointer until pointer movement is detected. I've tried all settings I could think of but nothing so far has changed this behaviour. Just to be clear, we're not talking about "hide mouse while typing" kind of behaviour. In this case, when the machine boots up there is no cursor, and it remains invisible for ever, unless you move a touchpad or mouse.
Is there some setting or registry value I could modify to change this behaviour?
Alternatively, is there some script I could use to just jiggle the mouse at startup? I've used Windows Scripting Host for things like this before, but the SendKeys method seems not to support mouse control.

Jul 8, 2013I just installed Windows 8.1 and so far so good except for one minor but extremely annoying bug.
Any file explorer window I open is not properly aligning with the mouse pointer. So if I want to click on lets say the C drive, I can't hover the mouse pointer directly above the C drive, I have to hover off to the right somewhere near until I see the highlight occur and than click. Everything seems to be off to the right.

Mouse Pointer Doesn't Appear After Restart
Jun 21, 2013I have had to do a system restore on my desktop 2 times because the Microsoft update rendered my windows 8 desktop useless unless in safe mode, THEN it showed my mouse pointer. the unifying software shows the little orange unifying logo every time i move my mouse, but no pointer. so i just disabled Microsoft updates.
On the laptop, it's my friends and his mousepad/trackpad died so i gave him my old mx anywhere k360 keyboard and tried to pair it with the software, SAME issue. I am not going to system restore his laptop but i believe the mouse that's on my desktop is the 810 gaming mouse? I had to do a system restore twice and now it's happening on my friends laptop.
I disabled windows updates and restarted my computer because i installed a program. when it booted, again, no mouse pointer again, so it's not the windows update. so i had to do a system restore again....

Nov 20, 2012I installed Windows 8 in another partition just to learn it and do the move later. I got no big issues but...The next day I noticed I have no mouse pointer in the "metro" interface. If I am in the desktop the pointer shows OK.
I looked carefully at boot/turn off stages and at the beginning the mouse pointer is there but suddenly disappears. The same is when power off. Suddenly appears just before the final stages of the turn off procedure.
I can see the visual signals (mouse over) and click in apps but no pointer at all.

Jul 11, 2014My OCZ Agility 3 SSD started to fail and temporarily I have replaced it with a Crucial MX100 SSD, whilst the RMA is being dealt with.
I had multiple copies of Windows 8 on the old SSD managed by Bootit Bare Metal and I copied these to the replacement SSD. Now when I start Windows 8 with new SSD the mouse pointer keeps jumping and a little blue circle appears by it.
If I go to the Task Manager and stop the Microsoft Windows Search Indexer the mouse stays still and behaves normally.

Make Document Behind Pop Up Just By Moving Mouse?
Nov 6, 2013If I use the search function, not in a browser, but in the OS itself, it will bring up a Bing page of results. This page fills the entire screen and has no apparent way to close it. This also happens when I open a PDF using the native Windows 8 reader - the pdf opens to a full page with no apparent way to minimize or close it.
That's just the beginning of the problem. I have been just ignoring what is on that full screen by opening the desktop and just going about my work (hate the tiles, but that's a different story). However, from time-to-time, when I'm moving the mouse cursor and doing nothing but moving the mouse cursor, that full screen Bing page or PDF will just pop to the front unbidden. I can obviously reopen the desktop again, but this is a hassle, as this page-behind just keeps popping up and interupting my work. Worse, once it happens, it seems to happen again and again as I'm making the first mouse movement after moving back to the desktop. I literally have to open the desktop again and again 5 or 6 times before that document behind stops popping up. When I TRY to reproduce this, I can't. I can't seem to make the document behind pop up just by moving the mouse - but when I don't want it to happen, it does.

Win 8.1 64bit - Applications Running But No Visible Windows?
Aug 16, 2014This may be related to the recent Windows update.
Just recently, I noticed that, sometimes, I had to click an application twice to start it.
At first, I attributed it to typos, but when it happened quite a few times, I investigated.
I saw that Task Manager showed the application running, but there was no window on the desktop.
The application doesn't matter and it's not easily reproducible - happens once or twice a day at random.
Odd.
I'll be a bit more vigilant now that I noticed it and see if I can track it down better (32-bit or 64-bit apps, for example). The last one was a 32-bit application. And I started two applications in rapid succession.
(I'm on 64-bit 8.1).
BSOD At Random Times In Windows 8.1 - No Text Visible On Screen

Unresponsive Windows 8 Computer - Cursor Arrow Visible And Movable But Nothing Clickable
Jun 30, 2014Earlier today my Asus x551m laptop stopped working; the cursor arrow is still visible and movable, but nothing is clickable, ctrl-alt-delete does nothing, and this laptop does not have an easily removable battery that would allow for a hard reset. Also, when I hold the laptop up to my ear, it is completely silent as if it's not even running. It's been like this for almost 3 hours, and I'm hoping that it will be ok once the battery dies and I power it on again.

Aug 8, 2014After windows 8.1 update (via windows store free upgrade) the system will go through its initializing sequence then go to a black screen w/ pointer.
I have this issue both in windows and safe mode. I have attempted to follow these steps and while I can try this, non offer the ability to install anew driver. Here it stays.
I have read this is normally caused by a graphics driver issue. In several cases the thread was closed, as the user was able to resolve the issue... but left no conclusion.

It would appear (now), during step 8 here, that the ASUS driver (VGA_Intel_Win81_64_VER101810330802) should be updated for 8.1. This seems to have been the missed step. This doesn't seem to be mentioned anywhere. This is an observation is from self deduction.
So, How do I push/install the correct driver?

Nov 19, 2013I have had this issue to some extent from Windows 7 onwards, but it has got worse with successive Windows versions, and it's now quite insane since I 'upgraded' from Windows 8 to 8.1 (x64).
The problem is that when I drag and drop from Desktop or Explorer or my regular file manager (FreeCommander), an absolutely huge icon appears at the tip of the mouse pointer, representing the file being dragged (or, in an application, representing the block of text being dragged). Not only is this extremely distracting, but it actually makes it difficult and indeed sometimes impossible to see the exact point where I mean to be dropping the item.
I so much want to turn off that behaviour. Sure, I want a small, discreet little rectangle or tiny icon to show at the mouse pointer, so that I know that I am indeed dragging something, as I used to get a long time ago, but not this great big obstructive thing that appears for each drag and drop nowadays. It may look clever or 'cool', but it is dysfunctional and obstructive.

Nov 23, 2013I upgraded to Windows 8.1 from Windows 8 and I can no longer see the files inside the folders on my networked drive. Before I upgraded I could see them, after the upgrade - not so much. The folders are fine, I can see them, just no files visible. There's no network issues as the files are visible from my Win7 machines and my wife's Windows 8 machine. All the standard default sharing and viewing settings are correct. Even if I put the direct path in File Explorer is tells me there's nothing there. I'm absolutely baffled. I have never seen this particular type of sharing issue before. I'm a pretty savvy Network Admin so the basic troubleshooting (and standard sharing settings) has been covered.

click on the drop down for 4weeks etc - it immediately returns to 4 weeks - so you cannot use the dropdown to select other options

Windows 8 Won't Allow To Use Mouse / Touchscreen Or Keyboard?
Jul 15, 2014I have an Acer Aspire M computer with a touch screen that runs Windows 8.1. I was having issues with the touch screen, so I went to download the drivers from the Acer website. However, when I restarted my computer to complete the installation, it wouldn't allow me to use either the mouse, touch screen, or keyboard.
Normally, after loading, a personalized picture will appear on the screen, displaying the time, connectibility, and strength of the network. The user is then supposed to swipe up, click on, or press space to move the picture, at which point the login screen appears. My computer loads normally when starting, but won't allow me to use the mouse, touch screen, or keyboard to move the picture out of the way, so I cannot access the login screen.
I have already contacted the Acer company support and attempted to use the battery reset pinhole, but to no avail. Is there anything I can do, besides a factory reset or using it as a cat bed?

This is a significant issue and I'm having a lot of trouble finding a solution online. According most sources I look at, it seems that people are usually unable to figure out what the problem is.
I am among those people. I've tried everything that a normal user probably can try. I've checked the Device Manager, tried it with "Allow windows to turn this device off to save power" disabled for USB ports. I've tried reinstalling Windows entirely, and from different discs. All to no avail.
At this point I'm starting to suspect either my system has incompatibility with Windows 8 (my system came with 7), but Origin (my PC manufacturer) said it should be fine. It doesn't matter which USB port I put it in, the issue is still there.
The only thing I can think of now is it might be my mouse. It's an old black Dell laser mouse. But I would like to be for sure before going out and buying a new one. This seems to be a recurring issue among Windows 8 users, so I have a feeling that it may not be the mouse as much as the OS.
It often makes the sound of hardware being disconnected/reconnected as well, but not always.
