Sep 15, 2014I wonder if i could hook up my new Kingston SSDNOW W300 120Gb ssd to my main computer with windows 8 ( Crappy 1Tb Seagate SSHD ) And install linux on the ssd. So when me and my friends motherboard finaly arrive i will be able to just hook up the ssd and go right into linux?
Also I want to be able to temporarily play around in linux with the main computer ( Boot into linux instead of win 8. ) to play around and install the things i want.

I have tried to run Windows 8 installation throu USB but it cannot proceed since the hard drive is not in NTSF mode. How do I change this and proceed with Windows 8 install? Jan 5, 2014I've been messing with lubuntu and backtrack and decided to install Backtrack5 on my laptop(Lenovo N586). I couldn't boot into windows 8.1 after installing Backtrack5 R3, but I had no problem booting into backtrack(I think I made a mistake of installing backtrack bootloader in the same place where Windows bootloader was...). I was able to boot into windows 8.1 after fixing the windows bootloader, but this time I couldn't boot into backtrack5. I wanted to start fresh and uninstalled Backtrack5 using boot-repair-disk. And ever since I uninstalled the backtrack5, I cannot boot into anything unless I use live linux usb. I've literally tried almost everything I could find in the past a couple of days on the internet including the forum. It says my hard drive is locked and I don't really have any available options that actually work(like refresh, start up repair, diagnostic, reinstall, nothing works). Windows 7 recovery CD didn't work saying I am using different version of OS, so I should use different recovery CD.

Feb 8, 2013I have upgraded my windows 7 ultimate to windows 8 pro a month ago and activated accordingly.
3 Days ago I tried to install Linux OS on XP partition ( earlier I had a XP+ Windows 7 dual boot and I upgraded windows 7 to Windows 8 Pro).
Unfortunately installation of linux failed and Windows 8 Pro is not booting now
How can I restore/re install windows 8 pro??
I tried by inserting repair DVD , but getting message of " repair could not possible".
Actually windows 8 Pro partition is not formatted, only the partition of XP got formatted ( earlier I had a XP+ Windows 7 dual boot and I upgraded on windows 7) .
Right now PC showing some message regarding Intel/processor/..etc.. on a black screen.
Actually I am least bothered about my personal files.
My ultimate concern is regarding activation of windows 8 pro with same product key.
Is there could be any problem with activation of windows 8 PRO?? and what procedure I have to follow?

Jul 18, 2014I am clean installing Windows 8.1 and Ubuntu on a friends new laptop and although I have taken Clonezilla images of partitions on my personal laptop should I ever need them I was hoping there was something more user friendly I could install on my friend's laptop. Anarethos Recovery Toos with Media Creator seems to be what I am after but I am not sure if that will mess up the boot settings or even completely remove Linux.
Ideally I am looking for something that can be launched by holding a hotkey down at boot. When launched it will offer to restore the main Windows 8.1 system partition (GPT) with all drivers and programs installed exactly how it is when I hand it over, and if possible offer to restore the Ubuntu /home partion. The crux is that Windows can be restored without affecting Ubuntu.

I'm having a lot of doubts about it. A lot of people write that their Windows 8.1 system got, excuse my language, ****ed up. They say it's because of OEM/UEFI & so forth.

Everything seemed to go OK but in the end I didn't end up with the grub boot loader, so I can only boot into Windows. Now I ended up loosing 20% of my hard drive which is now unallocated space that I can't figure out how to reclaim into my hard drive. I tried deleting the partition but it's still there and there was no option to expand volume.

Dec 18, 2013Suddenly Win 8.1 (on partition F) can't read anymore my other partions on the same drive, also it coudn't read my external USB drive.
When clicking on the partitions c: or d: it says 'cannot access local device' and 'device not ready'.
I have a dual boot system with Windows 7 and 8.1. I can boot into Windows 7 and read all partitions. I also checked the MBR which looks fine. I also have controlled in Computer Management that all drives have a letter assigned.
However Windows 8.1 can read my USB drives and the installation DVD of Windows 8.
Clicking on properties of e.g. drive c: there is of course no security tab, so it shouldn't be a question of permissions. Also no error codes in event log.
Booting in safe mode does still does not solve the problem. Of course Windows 8.1 can read perfectly its partition where it has been installed.
I know, a repair or refresh might be the solution, but if possible I want to avoid it.
Checked also with my different antivirus and spyware programs. All comes clean.
Windows 8 BSOD NTFS File System
Jan 19, 2014I've had my Sony Laptop for under a year now, and it was working alright (with the occasional problem such as BSODs), but today after having hibernated the computer (never shutting down/restarting) for a month (because I went on holiday), I finally was forced to shut down by Windows update. However, when I booted up again, it signed me into a temporary user account. This had happened to me before, so I didn't think much of it, I tried to do a system restore, but came up with the error: 0x80070005. I tried different restore points, but they all yielded the same results.
Then I tried doing an sfc /scannow, which said nothing was wrong. I also scheduled a chkdsk /f/r for boot. Unfortunately it got stuck on 28% for over an hour. So I turned the computer off. When I turned it back on, I was unable to sign in: "The user profile service failed the sign in user profile cannot be loaded". So I restarted the computer. This is where it got really bad.
As soon as the computer boots up, it shows the loading signal then instantly goes to the Windows 8 BSOD saying that there was a problem with NTFS File System.
Now each time I boot up, it does the exact same thing. What do I do?? I haven't had this laptop for long. The laptop is still under warranty, am I able to get it fixed under warranty.

Jun 26, 2014I am just built a new pc and installed and updated all drivers properly. But it keeps crushing and most common bsod is "Ntfs_File_System" and "Service_Exception_Not_Handled". I searched almost all of similar forum post and i still get bsod's. İ have tried to run Memtest86 and it couldnt find any error in rams. Sometimes data corruption occured in my several files and i have ran HD TUNE to find any bad sector but it was ok too. I have done all i can and it still crushes 2-3 times a day.

Oct 30, 2012I purchased a new SSD drive for running windows 8, while installing I unplugged all of my other drives in my machine including a WD 2TB drive I use for files. I cannot seem to get the Windows 8 installation to be able to access the drive when I select it it says "F: is not accessible. Access is denied" after following the instructions below. Sep 15, 2014OK, so I made a backup DVD of some OS related programs for my computers onto a DVD, but when I attempted to MOUNT the image from the disk to Win 8.1's included virtual drive, I get an error that the Disc Image is not formatted for NTFS file system, and cannot be mounted.
I can copy the files from the disc to a location on the desktop and execute the files from there, but it's a royal pain in the neck to do this every time.
(Yes, I understand, I probably will need to build a new image and burn it to a new DVD, but I want to make it one that I can run the disc from my optical drive and it will work!).
USB is volatile storage, and can be erased. I prefer hardcopy backups for this reason.

Jan 3, 2014It is a 64 GB Toshiba USB drive (TNU). Problem is that every time I try to format to NTFS the normal way with Windows 7 or Windows 8 I get the message: Windows was unable to complete the format.
I tried to format it using the specific software from the drive manufacturer, TNA.
A friend managed to format it to FAT32, but the next time I tried to access the drive Windows showed a message saying that I needed to format the drive to use it. Then there appeared only the exFAT option.
I also tried some partition software, like AOMEI Partition Assistant Standard Edition, and it could format to both FAT32 and NTFS, but when I removed and put the USB drive back Windows again warned me about the need to format and again I had only the exFAT option left.
