Setup Installation :: Custom Recover Windows 8.1 Without Affecting Linux?
Jul 18, 2014
I am clean installing Windows 8.1 and Ubuntu on a friends new laptop and although I have taken Clonezilla images of partitions on my personal laptop should I ever need them I was hoping there was something more user friendly I could install on my friend's laptop. Anarethos Recovery Toos with Media Creator seems to be what I am after but I am not sure if that will mess up the boot settings or even completely remove Linux.
Ideally I am looking for something that can be launched by holding a hotkey down at boot. When launched it will offer to restore the main Windows 8.1 system partition (GPT) with all drivers and programs installed exactly how it is when I hand it over, and if possible offer to restore the Ubuntu /home partion. The crux is that Windows can be restored without affecting Ubuntu.

I used four drives in my hard-disk. I needed to extend volume for my C drive. So using the Disk management utility I was trying to shrink the drive F (as it was very next to C, as in Disk management). But something happen accidental here. I found that two of my drives E & F went missing after the operation. Also my laptop suddenly restarted (after perform a checking task). I am not sure how this happened and looking for a way to recover the lost partitions as they are seen still exist, including the data.
I was only trying to shrink around 283 mb of volume from a drive with 138 gb, as an experiment basis, to see it work. On that process the drives were lost and those are not shown into my windows now. Using a software EaseUS Partition Master, I could still see the drives still exist as they contain the data as used spaces, and also show the unallocated space of 283 mb but I am not finding a way how could I recover my partition without affecting the data.

I've been messing with lubuntu and backtrack and decided to install Backtrack5 on my laptop(Lenovo N586). I couldn't boot into windows 8.1 after installing Backtrack5 R3, but I had no problem booting into backtrack(I think I made a mistake of installing backtrack bootloader in the same place where Windows bootloader was...). I was able to boot into windows 8.1 after fixing the windows bootloader, but this time I couldn't boot into backtrack5. I wanted to start fresh and uninstalled Backtrack5 using boot-repair-disk. And ever since I uninstalled the backtrack5, I cannot boot into anything unless I use live linux usb. I've literally tried almost everything I could find in the past a couple of days on the internet including the forum. It says my hard drive is locked and I don't really have any available options that actually work(like refresh, start up repair, diagnostic, reinstall, nothing works). Windows 7 recovery CD didn't work saying I am using different version of OS, so I should use different recovery CD.

I have upgraded my windows 7 ultimate to windows 8 pro a month ago and activated accordingly.
3 Days ago I tried to install Linux OS on XP partition ( earlier I had a XP+ Windows 7 dual boot and I upgraded windows 7 to Windows 8 Pro).
Unfortunately installation of linux failed and Windows 8 Pro is not booting now
How can I restore/re install windows 8 pro??
I tried by inserting repair DVD , but getting message of " repair could not possible".
Actually windows 8 Pro partition is not formatted, only the partition of XP got formatted ( earlier I had a XP+ Windows 7 dual boot and I upgraded on windows 7) .
Right now PC showing some message regarding Intel/processor/..etc.. on a black screen.
Actually I am least bothered about my personal files.
My ultimate concern is regarding activation of windows 8 pro with same product key.
Is there could be any problem with activation of windows 8 PRO?? and what procedure I have to follow?

I really want to dual boot Windows 8.1 with Kali Linux. ~ 64 bit.
I'm having a lot of doubts about it. A lot of people write that their Windows 8.1 system got, excuse my language, ****ed up. They say it's because of OEM/UEFI & so forth.
I'm unfortunately not so experienced with dual booting so i wouldn't really know what to do. What's the problem with Windows 8.1 & Linux, what do I need to do in order to install it successfully without errors?

My asus Laptop, K55N-DB81 has Linux on it. BUT before I had windows 8 on it. Now I want to re-install Windows 8 on it, but I don't know how to. I didn't create any recovery disks , and the Product Key is embedded into the Bios. I know what the Product Key IS just in case I would have to enter it again. Do I need to get an iso. to boot from and then go from there or something?

I have an pre-installed Windows 8 in my notebook. When I first got the PC, I got only C:/ partition so I needed D:/ and for doing this I used EaseUS Partition Manager. This is just a guess but I guess Windows can't find those recover partitions that are in my HDD. I haven't deleted those partitions just created D:/ and here is a screenshot I just take to show you the partitions I have.
I have already tried copying the Install.wim from my BIOS_RVY partition which was about 9GB and I moved it to C:/WinRec and used this command as I saw it from internet : reagentc.exe /setosimage /path C:WinRec /target c:Windows /Index 1 But i still get the error:
"Insert media some files are missing. Your Windows installation or recovery medial will provide these files."
This method didn't worked so any other too. I wonder how can I refresh or some sort of return my notebook to the factory settings from the recovery parts I have.

I tried to set up a dual boot, Windows 8.1 and Linux Zorin 8 on a new Lenovo desktop. I setup the partition first in Windows and then loaded Zorin per the instructions here: [URL].....
Everything seemed to go OK but in the end I didn't end up with the grub boot loader, so I can only boot into Windows. Now I ended up loosing 20% of my hard drive which is now unallocated space that I can't figure out how to reclaim into my hard drive. I tried deleting the partition but it's still there and there was no option to expand volume.

I have an ASUS Zenbook UX32V, which came with win 8 preinstalled.
I was having endless problems with Windows 8, such as software compatibility, and formatted the laptop (removing all partitions), and installing Windows 7 over it.
This has worked fine to date, but I now need to switch to Win 8 again.
I know my laptop supports UEFI, and that the Windows 8 installations are no longer probably on the computer. Is there a way to recover the cd key from the UEFI and use this to download the Win 8 installation files again? The CD key was not supplied in the laptop documentation...

I have two laptops, both Samsung, one mine and one my sisters. My one is Windows 8 and her one is a slightly older model so Windows 7. Now both are are very similar in spec, being 4GB and Intel Pentium 2.3GHz models. She recently asked me if i could sort out her laptop with Windows 8, so I said yep should be no problem.
I went and bought a Windows 8 Pro 64bit and was at first going to just do a plain install. But then had a bright idea and thought why not do an image of mine and recover it to hers, and then when started up just enter the key of the new one. that way she gets a full original Samsung install along with all the apps and everything.
At first I tried the samsung built in Recovery software but had no luck as it was just a complete nightmare. Not booting the USB I put it on for the first few times, then eventually after changing the BIOS setting to UEFI and formatting her Disk to GPT it started but then said no image found. In end I tried the old way by using the Windows built in File Recovery Image tool which made me a repair disc and 3 discs for the image itself.
This booted first go and went all way through the recovery, and then did the usual "restarting in X seconds ..." But after it rebooted to my horror the Samsung Logo screen appears and then after that it just stays blank.
It does every few seconds momentarily flicker on the screen but then just goes bank again. I cant even get into the BIOS anymore or boot from anything.

Went from an Intel MB and CPU to an AMD setup before realizing that wouldn't just be able to boot into my existing windows installation when I first plug everything in. From what I've seen on the forums I've decided to reinstall Windows 8 on the machine. The problem is that I need to recover the files on the old Windows installation. I have 2 HDDs to play with.
What should I do? Make a LiveCD of some kind and install Windows on a new partition? Make an Ubuntu LiveCD and transfer the files to the other HDD then install Windows?

I know that by using recimg, you can make a custom refresh image. And I hear that you cannot use it to reset Windows to factory state. is that so? if so, how do I do that?
Also, is it possible to store the recovery image in a hidden partition. hidden in the sense, the drive letter is not automatically assigned when you refresh/reset Windows, nor can you do it from Disk Management. only from diskpart. however, if i can still use reset while keeping the recovery image in a hidden folder in C: drive, that is still fine i guess.
The thing is, the recovery partition of my Dell Latitude 10 tablet is destroyed (it's Dell's fault though) and even though i can easily recover Windows as I have an iso image and can use the USB to reinstall windows like we normally do on our desktops, i want to sell the tablet and i want to make it recoverable via the recovery features in Windows 8. without the ability to recover, the value of the tablet will be pretty low. if all else fails, i will have to buy a cheap USB flash drive, make it a recovery drive and give it with the tablet. sucks!
It is fine if i have to update to Windows 8.1, if it makes it possible in Windows 8.1 even though it was not in Windows 8.

I reset my pc to factory conditions using the Samsung recover tool, the pc seems slower fps wise in games for example. Was faster before i reset the pc. Model Samsung 3505VC. I believe it might be to do with my graphics card as it is rated only 4.9 now on windows rating and was 5.7 before.

First, some context: I have a Dell Inspiron 15R SE that came with Windows 8.
I've managed to get a working dual-boot system with Ubuntu 12.10. I can't remember exactly how I done that, but I remember that I had to disable secure boot. I think that the boot configuration those days was:
Secure boot: DisabledLoad legacy option rom: EnabledBoot list option: Legacy
This "configuration" worked perfectly for 6-7 months.
Then, one day (last week, can't remember the exact day), when I was using Windows 8 the computer crashed. I hard-rebooted and got this screen:
After executed boot-repair from a Ubuntu LiveCD dozens of times I've decided to eliminate Ubuntu temporarily and focus to get a system with Windows 8 working nice.
Then I used my recovery DVDs to recover the system. Yup, Windows has booted. But when I restarted first time I got the same error. Then I, digging a solution, pressed F12 after a reboot and got here:
The highlighted option allows me to boot into Windows 8. So I went to boot options (F2) and changed the following configuration:
Load legacy option rom: DisabledBoot list option: UEFI
Now I can boot directly to Windows without need to press F12.
But my objective isn't complete. I want to erase all Ubuntu entries from the seconds image and restore the legacy boot from the first imagem (because they worked before).
I did two things:
I erased all partitions related to Ubuntu (root partition and home partition).I created a Windows recovery disk (not a system recovery disk).
I used the recovery disk to run the automatic recovery procedure (I forgot the exactly name). I've runned it at least 10 times with no success. Then I went to command prompt to try the famous triad: bootrec /fixmbr, bootrec /fixboot and bootrec /rebuildbcd. Still, no solution.

Spoiler: Image custom without software for recovering windows system
Refresh your PC Windows 8 without affecting your files
To avoid that your applications installed from disks or web site will be deleted, you can create a custom image control reimg.exe
Captures a new recovery image customized to the location specified by <repertoire>, and is defined as active recovery image.
Type the command : recimg.exe /createimage c:ImageSys
To display the path to the directory in which the active recovery image is stored, type:
Recimg.exe /showcurrent

When I send a long message on facebook, it sometimes sends the whole thing, then little sections of it separately, this has only happened since I've had windows 8. Also when I use windows 8 built in chat, if I send a long(ish) message to someone on facebook, it splits it up into smaller messages, but sends them in the wrong order.

For the longest while I've had issues with my Windows 8.1 ignoring my selection of power options. By this I mean by CPU will stay clocked at 1.4GHz when it should be hitting around 2.3GHz when I set to high performance from power saving mode.
In the past it's cleared up by itself or through reboots but I'm thoroughly pissed off and I want it fixed.
