I like having my monitor power off soon after activity stops. Currently, I have it powering off after 2 minutes of inactivity. I am also very big on locking my PC when I step away. So, I also have the screen saver kick in after 2 minutes. (Of course, I never even see a screen saver because the monitor is off. And, in fact, my screen saver is set to "None". So this setting essentially means the PC is set to lock after 2 minutes.)
However, what often happens is that I'm sitting at the PC, and the monitor turns off, but I don't want it to lock. I move the mouse, and it's locked--even if I intervened within a second or two.
With Windows XP, I used to be able to use the ScreenSaverGracePeriod registry value to work around this. I've tried this with my Windows 8 system, but it doesn't work. I have tried using ScreenSaverGracePeriod as both REG_SZ and as DWORD.
Is there any way to delay the PC from locking after the monitor powers off by just a few seconds? I know I can have the monitor power off after 2 minutes but set the screen saver to 3 minutes, but I'd like to reduce the delay to a matter of seconds, if that is possible.
Everything was fine, until recently, when I turn on my PC, I don't get an immediate internet connection. This is happening nearly everytime now with some frequency.
I reset the router/modem and everything is fine after that, so all is good.
But it is still frustrating. I get, "Ethernet doesn't have a valid IP configuration".
Following are screenshots of my 'ipconfig' and 'Network Connection Status' before (unsuccessful) and after (successful) internet access:
You will see from the above that there is certainly something different with the data...
Incidentally, I did find a nice youtube 'tutorial' in relation to this subject title about manually configurating the settings:
I haven't tried this yet and that is probably down to the fact that I can't find my alternate DNS server setting (the very last box to fill in - watch the video and you will know what I mean) ???
For the last few weeks, my taskbar has randomly restarted; that is, it disappeared for a few seconds, all the icons on it disappeared, then came back. Simultaneously, my wallpaper will disappear. This also happens when I try to
*Launch the File Explorer (D:) *Launch Wolfram Mathematica in safe mode.
This is probably stupid, but I also feel this has something to do with java -- specifically, javaw.exe.
Today I plugged an hdmi to vga cable into my Win 8 sony vaio, and I plugged the other VGA side of the cable into an acee 22" monitor. I then chose from the right hand windows 8 panel to "extend to monitor", the laptop screen went black, the monitor screen remained without signal (extended screen did not show on monitor) and now the laptop screen is black.
I am now stuck and both laptop and monitor screen not working.
I tried unplugging cable, pressing fn and all the f1 to f12, shift, windows button but nothing is working.
I pressed off button then switched laptop back on and it showed the sony vaio logo on laptop then the screen went black again.
how could I return my laptop screen to work and stop the screen extension which is not working and which I am sure is the case.
yesterday i tried to install a free copy of camtasia 8 the video showed a way so i can register the program free the way suggested was to go to c:/windows/system32/drivers/ect/ then try to change the security properties of the host file and add a states called everyone but isn't work for me so i canceled it, then i get a free user name and serial number from friend and register the program and working properly. I restart may computer lately and its not working , its keep restating i tried refreshing the system but its said my c partition is locked i tried restoring it using troubleshooter but it's not restoring it and tell that no restore point when try to make a one the system response is "system protection is available only in online operating system. auto recovery not working too .
Since yesterday everytime I shutdown or reset my laptop(Dell XPS15) it eithewr gets stuck on the restart screen forever or just goes to blanck screen with the power still on if I shutdown. So then I have to hold the power button down to switch off in both casesI stupidly don't have any recovery option inplace and when I try and do a fresh reset or anything from Advanced system options it gets stuck on a blank screen because it can't reset properly. Also anytime I try and disable or uninstall drivers in device manager it will constantly say it's uninstalling or will go to not responding.
Whenever I restart my laptop, This little thing on the uppermost left side of my laptop appears. Would this be a threat to my laptop? what can I do about it?
I'm running on a Windows 8.1 OS, and recently it keeps getting BSODs before starting up/restarting, but it still manages to get into Windows, and it seems to run normally after that. The error message is something like PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA (rtwlane.sys). I have uploaded a minidump file of the most recent BSOD on my OneDrive here.
Having upgraded to 8.1 yesterday, the problems I have found thus far ae:
-Restarting the computer takes about 5 mins -One of my two printers doesn't work -Internet explorer 11 is constantly freezing, then stopping responding, then quitting and re-starting
Everything works OK but am wondering if all the various hacks I've done (Aero Glass, Start8 etc. etc.) are affecting it somehow. This normally wouldn't worry me too much but when installing Windows Updates normally one would see that shutdown message about 'installing updates xx%' and again at startup. After the word restarting (or shutting down) appears for a split second it's black screen throughout that process as if my graphics card is cut off before anything else, which I find odd.
Could of course be the fault of nVidia's latest driver I suppose. (314.22 WHQL). It isn't the video driver, rolled it back and still the same.
I just wondering but it is the second time my netbook has done this (in less than 4 months) but I have had to restart 2 times because of disk errors. Does this mean that my HDD is dying...
my laptop is acer v5 471G he keep restarting when i try to shutdown it..
even when i do sleep, my laptop is not go to sleep mode.. but it restarting..
it looks like every switch in power is all becoming reboot not only that, sometimes when i doing my work.. my laptop restarting by its own and after i log in and come to start menu.. a blue screen appears and this i attached the file
As my laptop was restarting I turn it off before it was finished restarting, now when I start it i won't stop going into recovery mode and restarting again without letting me do anything, I've tried going into safe mode by clicking f8 + shift and just f8, I also tried going into the boot by nothing works, it worked fine all the time never gave me any problem, I tried also to start it over with the windows 8 installation disk but it won't do nothing just keeps restarting , then it say it encountered a problem and is just getting some information an Ethan restarts again, I don't know what to do?
I'm experiencing a problem after installing Windows 8 on Dell Inspiron N7110.
When I leave my laptop on for a while, it restarts because of a blue screen with the error: 0x00000050; PAGE_FAULT_IN_NON_PAGED_AREA
It only happens when the laptop isn't used but is still on. When I'm working on it this error doesn't occur.
I checked RAM and HDD with Dell Support Center PC Checkup (even RAM stress test) and it shows no errors. Besides the HDD is new, as my old one broke and Dell replaced it.
I updated all my drivers from Dell's Website, so they all supported by windows 8.
My system (Windows 8) was shut down during a power outage, and now when I try to restart, I hear the CPU go through what sounds like the normal process, but there is nothing on my monitor. I've tried the CPU with another monitor, same issue. I can access the shared folders from another computer on the network, so it looks like everything starts up OK. Before I run down to the local repair shop, is there anything I can try?
Whenever I save-as a file from any software to desktop it is placed on Monitor 1 under the program I am using . I would like the saved file icon to be placed on the second monitor so I can drag it to another app running on monitor 1 without minimising the apps on my monitor 1. Is this possible ?
Basically, I just bought a pc, turned it on, put my old monitors vga in the port provided, and basically, I just see a black screen, the pc is booting fine, etc, but cant see anything on my old monitor.
what i did was, I went to my pc, there are 2 hdmi ports, one is the upper one, and one is down, put the hdmi one on the upper one, nothing.. wasnt able to see anything on my tv that has a hdmi input, but when I put the hdmi cable in the lowest hdmi spot I can see windows, and am able to write this now.
My question is, how can I acces my pc thru the vga port of my old monitor without having to put it in the lowest hdmi port on my tv?
Any way to turn off and on my monitor with just click? I know how to turn off with click but in seconds Monitor will on automatically.. I think its because mouse movement. Thats why I wanna know how to TURN ON MONITOR WITH CLICK.
know of a hack or software to make sure that metro (start screen) always opens on my second monitor? This would make life with windows eight a whole lot easier.
I just want to ask I have a laptop Compaq CQ40, using windows 8 My laptop have a problem with the monitor, i guess the flexible cable of my laptop is broken Now I wanna use my Monitor PC to work (like we use projector) The question is, Can I use the monitor PC as the monitor Laptop? What item must i prepare? What must i do?
Just installed Windows 8.1. Both my monitors have a resolution of 1920 X 1080. Both have DPI set accordingly. My right hand monitor is fine, my left is fine when running the desktop and desktop apps. However, whenever I run an app on the second screen, it seems to be larger than normal (zoomed in). I think this is a DPI issue, and Ive tried tweaking the registry but to no avail. I have all the latest drivers. The start menu only displays 4 rows, yet when i move the resolution down to around 1600, it shows 5 rows.
I installed the win 8 upgrade on my desktop yesterday. I have two monitors connected but only one of them was working, even though I upgraded the drivers for the graphicscard, I wasn't able to enable the other monitor. This is, however, not my problem.. As part of me trying to figure it out, I hit the "Devices" button in the menu and disabled the only monitor on there. I thought it was the one which wasn't working, but it turned out to be the one already working, so now none of the monitors are on and how to get them working again.
I'm guess that I'm looking for some sort of a keyboard shortcut to enable the monitor again.
I have it set up just like I did with Win7. Screen saver set for 10 minutes, monitor power off set for 15 minutes. The problem is, the monitor doesn't turn off! To be more accurate, it DOES turn off at the 15 minute mark, for about 1 minute. Then it turns back on and the lock screen shows. Then after 1 minute, the display fades out to black, but the monitor itself is still on.
even disabling the lock screen, but nothing works. I've never been able to get the monitor to turn off for more than 1 minute.
