Whenever I save-as a file from any software to desktop it is placed on Monitor 1 under the program I am using . I would like the saved file icon to be placed on the second monitor so I can drag it to another app running on monitor 1 without minimising the apps on my monitor 1. Is this possible ?

Today I plugged an hdmi to vga cable into my Win 8 sony vaio, and I plugged the other VGA side of the cable into an acee 22" monitor. I then chose from the right hand windows 8 panel to "extend to monitor", the laptop screen went black, the monitor screen remained without signal (extended screen did not show on monitor) and now the laptop screen is black.
I am now stuck and both laptop and monitor screen not working.
I tried unplugging cable, pressing fn and all the f1 to f12, shift, windows button but nothing is working.
I pressed off button then switched laptop back on and it showed the sony vaio logo on laptop then the screen went black again.
how could I return my laptop screen to work and stop the screen extension which is not working and which I am sure is the case.
Any buttons on keyboard to click at all?
How do I get this nasty file browser to never show up? I'd really much rather a normal file explorer window pop up.
For example, using Paint Free, I made a nice little picture, then click "Save As". The screen I attached popped up. How do I get this bulky explorer to be replaced by a nice normal File Explorer? It happens in other programs sometimes as well, but I can't think of any other explicit examples.
I just recently imported Bookmarks (Favorites) from Chrome, and I was wondering how to remove the names of my bookmarks to have only the icons showing? That's the way I have them in Chrome, and it is great because it saves tremendous space on the Favorite Bar. I don't want to change with "Customize Title Width" to show only the Icons because I have some named folders as well, and when the text is removed it's impossible to know their contents. I know it's possible to have icons only show, even with the setting "Long Titles" selected, because YouTube, one of my imports, did indeed save without a name/title. I have attached a screenshot to exemplify that this is indeed possible:

I use a USB drive for extra capacity but I seldom have much spare space on C: as I have SQL server and Visual Studio installed. Looking at storage use on C: I notice 1.7 Gbytes of files in C:UsersSimonAppDataRoaming. Can I delete these as I use my login on only one computer at home? Roaming profiles are not enabled.
There are also 1.9 GBytes of files on C:UsersAll Users. I believe All Users is used for creating profiles for new users and All Users contains folders corresponding to those in C:Programs and C:Programs (x86). Can I delete any folders with programs that wouldn't be needed by any new accounts I might create?
I use Windows Live Mail installed on my PC.
Is there some way I can save the emails, including any attachments to a folder on an external dive?
When trying to save a document (could be from OpenOffice or LibreOffice or even a PDF), the Save As dialog opens and then immediately freezes. There is no way to escape--I have to "X" out of it and the document app crashes.
No new software has been installed since creating the new user account. We use Norton 360 and also Malware Bytes for protection.
In Windows 8 Home (the edition that came with my Dell XPS) there is no option to save System Image to Network, only to Disc or HD.
Is this feature missing from 'Home' version only and is the option to save to Network available in Windows 8 Pro like in W7?
If so what is the best and cheapest way to upgrade (officially, not via torrents) to Windows 8 Pro?
I have a problem with the Visual Effects in Windows 8. When i check "Show windows contents while dragging" and then press apply changes saved
Then after restarting computer settings returns back and the box is unchecked.
I don't know whether this is caused by software conflicts or something else .

I recently installed Win 8.1 Pro...there's some things I like and some I don't. I'm learning about File History and the System Image tools. Why MS went backwards in their backup tools from Win7 is a topic for another day...but I have a question about getting File History to backup certain files.
1) From what I'm reading & inferring, the only way to get File History to backup my Outlook 2007 PST file would be to add its containing folder to the Library? For example, add C:UsersUsernameAppDataLocalMicrosoftOutlook to the Library?
2) I'm guessing for other user files, preferences, data files, etc., that are usually located in the AppData Local or Roaming folders, that we have to add their containing folders to the Library?
Is this correct...or does File History back these up by default somewhere (besides System Image).
P.S. I hate this File History thing and the buried System Image tool that's also been handicapped. I want Win7's Backup & Restore back, where we could select any files we wanted for backup, schedule time of day to run backups and images, etc. I can only think MS did this to dumb down things for users.

I have a few email addresses that I use, in W7 I can type the first letter and all the other addies with the same letter are displayed. How I do it in Win 8.

View 10 Replies View RelatedThis new computer I've recently gotten comes with Windows 8; something I've never used before. I've noticed that, for some reason, the PC saves the last page (or pages) I was in, even after clicking out of them. Even going so far as resetting the computer or shutting it off completely, the last pages I were in start up upon starting up a browser. This has gotten incredibly annoying.
For example, if I were in Hotmail last before closing the browser, the next time I open the browser, it will load up the exact same Hotmail page I was on even though I have the homepage set to a different site. I do not want this to happen. Is there a way to shut this off so pages I X out of remain X-ed out of even after restarting the browser? Even if I don't close a page, if I reset or shut off the computer, I don't want to start at the same page I was on before. I want to start at my homepage. How can I fix this?
The "Reopen last browsing session" is greyed out and staying greyed out in IE10. Is there a download fix that one can get or is there another way to fix this thrilling problem.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI wanted to do a fresh windows 8.1 install (i have a samsung NP500P4C-T03CL notebook with windows 8 OEM preinstalled and when i updated to 8.1 the system went slow and "faily"). So i put the CD on the drive, but for my suprise when i reboted the system to enter the BIOS the F2 key didn't do the job, nor it appeared on the splash screen on samsung. After googling a lot and under trial/error concept i could enter the BIOS via Shift+Restart.
I did some changes to the BIOS booting set-up and noticed i have 2 Windows Boot Manager, the CD, the HDD and one option called "SETUP" that has a "!" ("!3.Setup"). So i tried every combination posible with Secure boot unabled, and UEFI+CSM OS, also with UEFI disabled, and none gave me the option to enter bios with F2, or recovery with F4. I managed to install win7 on another HDD. Main thing, besides the F2, F4, F8, F9, F12 (yes i prove all of them, even ESC), is that whenever i change the boot order it's not saved, and it is restablished to:
1. Windows Boot Manager
2. Windows Boot Manager
3. Setup
4. HDD
5. CD
Also i noticed that on the password options the one for the HDD appears grayed and as "FROZEN". I entered user and supervisor password, neither cleared the HDD one. i want to keep the BIOS update as a last resort. clearly it's not hdd related as the same thing happened when i tried another hdd with win7).
When I try to save files from Google, Office 2013 or any program in Windows 8.1, I get a partial white screen and a "Not Responding" message on the Title Bar. The "Close Program" dialog box follows. So, I can't "Save As" to my computer.

i had a bunch of images of a chest of drawers i wanted to sell. On my windows 7 PC all the previews showed the images sideways (landscape when they needed to be viewed in portrait). this is not a problem - expected behavior.
On the windows 8 PC all the images appeared portrait and in the correct orientation. images looked perfect. i understand that windows 8 reads the exif data and autorotates the images on previews and in the galleries. a neat trick.
On the windows 8 PC i put an ad on the website that i wanted to sell the drawers, and when i selected the images they previewed portrait in the file browser too. when uploaded the images all came out sideways (landscape) on the website.
this might seem like user error or a rudimentary problem at first, and trust me i have many years as a system admin under my belt, it is going to cause many problems of a similar nature for every user that touches it.
Windows 8 leads you to believe that your images are correctly oriented firstly, and then does not provide an easy way to adjust and save them even if you do know that they need to be adjusted. even in the windows photo viewer on the desktop (non metro viewer) you can rotate an image as much as you like with the buttons and it will not auto save it like it does in Win7.
In Win7 you could see that the image needs adjustment and its a good prompt for you to action, so you open it, rotate it, and it is automatically saved by the photo viewer so then whatever you do with it, it will be oriented correctly.
what i find absolutely crazy is that windows knows the image needs to be rotated, but does not save the image after it autorotates it, so it lulls you into a false sense of security.
I have up until a few days ago been able to modify and save my network properties ok. I connected a new DisplayLink USB docking station that lead to an update of some sort. I believed this to be to do with associated drivers. I let this go ahead and it may well have nothing to do with the problems I have been having.
First of all I couldn't even see the IP parameters and kept getting an error as follows:
"In Order to Configure TCP/IP, You Must Install and Enable a Network Adapter Card"
The wired and wireless was working in environments where I could use DHCP so I was confident the hardware was ok. Uninstalling the drivers and then updating them has got me passed this problem so I can see and edit the IP parameters. However now they are never saved. I edit them, close the window, re-edit them and they are back to automatic settings! I need to use static settings in the office.
So far as I can see there are 2 possibilities:
1. I don't have permissions to save these settings, wherever they are stored. But I have administrator permissions. Where are the settings stored? I have saved them before. How can I get access to be able to save them again?
2. Something else is overwriting the settings. How do I find out what and stop it?
I am rather enjoying the new Mail feature in 8.1 and it is "mostly" effortless to have all emails collectively in the one app. Problem I am having is I do sometimes need to send an email as an attachment to a web based submission form and it requires of course that I have the file/email saved locally so I can browse to it and attach.
I am completely stymied as to how to do this as there is no way to save locally (other than then the backup path in AppData which the App already does) just certain emails I would prefer to save them as either a .txt or .html or even just a plain old .docx file in My Documents folder, so I can then send it in on in a format preferable by the recipient I am sending to.

And while it makes sense, I still see no way to save a particular email other than as an .eml. Why is there not a simple feature such as save or save as within the Mail App itself?
My system (Windows 8) was shut down during a power outage, and now when I try to restart, I hear the CPU go through what sounds like the normal process, but there is nothing on my monitor. I've tried the CPU with another monitor, same issue. I can access the shared folders from another computer on the network, so it looks like everything starts up OK. Before I run down to the local repair shop, is there anything I can try?

what i did was, I went to my pc, there are 2 hdmi ports, one is the upper one, and one is down, put the hdmi one on the upper one, nothing.. wasnt able to see anything on my tv that has a hdmi input, but when I put the hdmi cable in the lowest hdmi spot I can see windows, and am able to write this now.
My question is, how can I acces my pc thru the vga port of my old monitor without having to put it in the lowest hdmi port on my tv?
My monitor measures less than 1024x768, if I install Windows 8, what will happen?

View 1 Replies View RelatedJust installed Windows 8.1. Both my monitors have a resolution of 1920 X 1080. Both have DPI set accordingly. My right hand monitor is fine, my left is fine when running the desktop and desktop apps. However, whenever I run an app on the second screen, it seems to be larger than normal (zoomed in). I think this is a DPI issue, and Ive tried tweaking the registry but to no avail. I have all the latest drivers. The start menu only displays 4 rows, yet when i move the resolution down to around 1600, it shows 5 rows.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI installed the win 8 upgrade on my desktop yesterday. I have two monitors connected but only one of them was working, even though I upgraded the drivers for the graphicscard, I wasn't able to enable the other monitor. This is, however, not my problem.. As part of me trying to figure it out, I hit the "Devices" button in the menu and disabled the only monitor on there. I thought it was the one which wasn't working, but it turned out to be the one already working, so now none of the monitors are on and how to get them working again.
I'm guess that I'm looking for some sort of a keyboard shortcut to enable the monitor again.
I have it set up just like I did with Win7. Screen saver set for 10 minutes, monitor power off set for 15 minutes. The problem is, the monitor doesn't turn off! To be more accurate, it DOES turn off at the 15 minute mark, for about 1 minute. Then it turns back on and the lock screen shows. Then after 1 minute, the display fades out to black, but the monitor itself is still on.
even disabling the lock screen, but nothing works. I've never been able to get the monitor to turn off for more than 1 minute.
I just built a new workstation for school and I'm having a what I think is a driver issue.
So when I bring my computer out of standby I hear it turn on but then it reset when the monitors don't come on.
Occasionally this happens when i turn on the computer or just return to it and the monitors shut off.
