I have a problem with the Visual Effects in Windows 8. When i check "Show windows contents while dragging" and then press apply changes saved
Then after restarting computer settings returns back and the box is unchecked.
I don't know whether this is caused by software conflicts or something else .
In File Explorer the preview window box is checked and thumbnails box is checked, but I can only preview image files. Word or Pdf files do not show up. I did a factory setting reinstall of Windows 8.1. My word documents showed up in the preview window prior to the reinstall, but not my pdf files. I use this feature frequently.

There are some programs that when I install them appear to hang when they're most of the way through the install. A current example is Hotspot Shield.
I've unregistered and reregistered MSIexec, to no effect. I've run sfg/scannow and the system integrity is 100%. When I check the process it appears to be doing something, though so trivial as to be barely worth recording, so I have to assume it's not hung, unless it's marking time. It's certainly not waiting on a write queue.
I wonder if there is a way to prevent tiles from dragging on the start screen? Hard to believe MS left this out! I often drag or swipe across the start screen and move a tile wo/ intending to. This happens often on the touch screen of my Samsung slate. Not sure if it happens as easily with a mouse.

4) I can "auto-arrange" them...
However I cannot move them...

I cannot edit a folder when I've used "Take Ownership" and I've made sure in the Security tab that I have full control, I still get "You need permission to preform this action" when trying to move stuff in the folder. What could be wrong?

I have an EFI installed Windows 8 64 bit system on a MacBook Pro retina. (ie not BootCamp)
I have mounted the EFI partition in Command Prompt and it appears in Windows Explorer, however it refuses me access to it. Access denied.
How can I get access to its contents please?
My primary reason to access it is to view and copy my current BCD file. I suppose a method to copy that file might be a good enough work around, at a pinch.
So i running 1080 off i7 4770 internal graphics and there content cut off from my screen. It looks like someone zoomed in my screen and know i can't see a lot of my stuff. I can just barley see my toolbar. Half of my icons are to far to the left see them. If i snap something to the top of my screen i can see all my tabs. This just happened because for a little while because i switched from a graphics to my internal graphics. How do you fix something like this. For a picture i look like this

display panel does't seem to fix it and the controllers on my monitors don't work.
Would like to view contents in Recycle Bin before final deletion?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a vista (sp2) 32bit PC & need to transfer the contents to a new Win 8 64 bit laptop.
No cd/dvd drive on the pc (or 1 that works).
Using Livemail in Windows 8.1 for no apparent reason the content of all messages in one or more storage folders will disappear. The message header is OK, but the contents of all messages in that particular folder are identical. It seems to occur only when I drag a new message from the inbox or sent box into the storage folder. And not every time.
I have tried restores the message contents. Clearly the WLM storage file is messed up - is there any way to restore or recover it?
I found that my two Windows 8.1 laptops will not copy the entire contents of any folder to my Iomega network drive. Only the folder alone is copied and none of the sub-folders or individual files. I can copy individual files separately, but not the whole folder sub-folder, and files together. I have no problem doing this with my Windows 7 desktop PCs. My network drive is connected directly to my Apple Airport Base Station router.
View 4 Replies View RelatedMy windows 8 partition is inaccessible. Win 8 won't boot, even after attempted repair and running chkdsk.
This all happened after an automatic update.
I booted to another drive. Windows explorer shows the bad partition letter but no size or contents. Other partitions on the same drive are ok.
I also can see the bad drive contents from a cmd prompt.
Whenever I save-as a file from any software to desktop it is placed on Monitor 1 under the program I am using . I would like the saved file icon to be placed on the second monitor so I can drag it to another app running on monitor 1 without minimising the apps on my monitor 1. Is this possible ?

For example, using Paint Free, I made a nice little picture, then click "Save As". The screen I attached popped up. How do I get this bulky explorer to be replaced by a nice normal File Explorer? It happens in other programs sometimes as well, but I can't think of any other explicit examples.
I just recently imported Bookmarks (Favorites) from Chrome, and I was wondering how to remove the names of my bookmarks to have only the icons showing? That's the way I have them in Chrome, and it is great because it saves tremendous space on the Favorite Bar. I don't want to change with "Customize Title Width" to show only the Icons because I have some named folders as well, and when the text is removed it's impossible to know their contents. I know it's possible to have icons only show, even with the setting "Long Titles" selected, because YouTube, one of my imports, did indeed save without a name/title. I have attached a screenshot to exemplify that this is indeed possible:

I use a USB drive for extra capacity but I seldom have much spare space on C: as I have SQL server and Visual Studio installed. Looking at storage use on C: I notice 1.7 Gbytes of files in C:UsersSimonAppDataRoaming. Can I delete these as I use my login on only one computer at home? Roaming profiles are not enabled.
There are also 1.9 GBytes of files on C:UsersAll Users. I believe All Users is used for creating profiles for new users and All Users contains folders corresponding to those in C:Programs and C:Programs (x86). Can I delete any folders with programs that wouldn't be needed by any new accounts I might create?

Is there some way I can save the emails, including any attachments to a folder on an external dive?
When trying to save a document (could be from OpenOffice or LibreOffice or even a PDF), the Save As dialog opens and then immediately freezes. There is no way to escape--I have to "X" out of it and the document app crashes.
No new software has been installed since creating the new user account. We use Norton 360 and also Malware Bytes for protection.
In Windows 8 Home (the edition that came with my Dell XPS) there is no option to save System Image to Network, only to Disc or HD.
Is this feature missing from 'Home' version only and is the option to save to Network available in Windows 8 Pro like in W7?
If so what is the best and cheapest way to upgrade (officially, not via torrents) to Windows 8 Pro?

When I tell EI 11 to Save as.. .txt, the file is unreadable.
When I save it as an htm and open it I'm sent to the gmail login but gmail seem to hang for a long time at login. I don't get to the inbox at all and need to close IE. How to save web mail to my hard drive?
I recently installed Win 8.1 Pro...there's some things I like and some I don't. I'm learning about File History and the System Image tools. Why MS went backwards in their backup tools from Win7 is a topic for another day...but I have a question about getting File History to backup certain files.
1) From what I'm reading & inferring, the only way to get File History to backup my Outlook 2007 PST file would be to add its containing folder to the Library? For example, add C:UsersUsernameAppDataLocalMicrosoftOutlook to the Library?
2) I'm guessing for other user files, preferences, data files, etc., that are usually located in the AppData Local or Roaming folders, that we have to add their containing folders to the Library?
Is this correct...or does File History back these up by default somewhere (besides System Image).
P.S. I hate this File History thing and the buried System Image tool that's also been handicapped. I want Win7's Backup & Restore back, where we could select any files we wanted for backup, schedule time of day to run backups and images, etc. I can only think MS did this to dumb down things for users.

View 10 Replies View RelatedThis new computer I've recently gotten comes with Windows 8; something I've never used before. I've noticed that, for some reason, the PC saves the last page (or pages) I was in, even after clicking out of them. Even going so far as resetting the computer or shutting it off completely, the last pages I were in start up upon starting up a browser. This has gotten incredibly annoying.
For example, if I were in Hotmail last before closing the browser, the next time I open the browser, it will load up the exact same Hotmail page I was on even though I have the homepage set to a different site. I do not want this to happen. Is there a way to shut this off so pages I X out of remain X-ed out of even after restarting the browser? Even if I don't close a page, if I reset or shut off the computer, I don't want to start at the same page I was on before. I want to start at my homepage. How can I fix this?
The "Reopen last browsing session" is greyed out and staying greyed out in IE10. Is there a download fix that one can get or is there another way to fix this thrilling problem.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI wanted to do a fresh windows 8.1 install (i have a samsung NP500P4C-T03CL notebook with windows 8 OEM preinstalled and when i updated to 8.1 the system went slow and "faily"). So i put the CD on the drive, but for my suprise when i reboted the system to enter the BIOS the F2 key didn't do the job, nor it appeared on the splash screen on samsung. After googling a lot and under trial/error concept i could enter the BIOS via Shift+Restart.
I did some changes to the BIOS booting set-up and noticed i have 2 Windows Boot Manager, the CD, the HDD and one option called "SETUP" that has a "!" ("!3.Setup"). So i tried every combination posible with Secure boot unabled, and UEFI+CSM OS, also with UEFI disabled, and none gave me the option to enter bios with F2, or recovery with F4. I managed to install win7 on another HDD. Main thing, besides the F2, F4, F8, F9, F12 (yes i prove all of them, even ESC), is that whenever i change the boot order it's not saved, and it is restablished to:
1. Windows Boot Manager
2. Windows Boot Manager
3. Setup
4. HDD
5. CD
Also i noticed that on the password options the one for the HDD appears grayed and as "FROZEN". I entered user and supervisor password, neither cleared the HDD one. i want to keep the BIOS update as a last resort. clearly it's not hdd related as the same thing happened when i tried another hdd with win7).
When I try to save files from Google, Office 2013 or any program in Windows 8.1, I get a partial white screen and a "Not Responding" message on the Title Bar. The "Close Program" dialog box follows. So, I can't "Save As" to my computer.

i had a bunch of images of a chest of drawers i wanted to sell. On my windows 7 PC all the previews showed the images sideways (landscape when they needed to be viewed in portrait). this is not a problem - expected behavior.
On the windows 8 PC all the images appeared portrait and in the correct orientation. images looked perfect. i understand that windows 8 reads the exif data and autorotates the images on previews and in the galleries. a neat trick.
On the windows 8 PC i put an ad on the website that i wanted to sell the drawers, and when i selected the images they previewed portrait in the file browser too. when uploaded the images all came out sideways (landscape) on the website.
this might seem like user error or a rudimentary problem at first, and trust me i have many years as a system admin under my belt, it is going to cause many problems of a similar nature for every user that touches it.
Windows 8 leads you to believe that your images are correctly oriented firstly, and then does not provide an easy way to adjust and save them even if you do know that they need to be adjusted. even in the windows photo viewer on the desktop (non metro viewer) you can rotate an image as much as you like with the buttons and it will not auto save it like it does in Win7.
In Win7 you could see that the image needs adjustment and its a good prompt for you to action, so you open it, rotate it, and it is automatically saved by the photo viewer so then whatever you do with it, it will be oriented correctly.
what i find absolutely crazy is that windows knows the image needs to be rotated, but does not save the image after it autorotates it, so it lulls you into a false sense of security.
I have up until a few days ago been able to modify and save my network properties ok. I connected a new DisplayLink USB docking station that lead to an update of some sort. I believed this to be to do with associated drivers. I let this go ahead and it may well have nothing to do with the problems I have been having.
First of all I couldn't even see the IP parameters and kept getting an error as follows:
"In Order to Configure TCP/IP, You Must Install and Enable a Network Adapter Card"
The wired and wireless was working in environments where I could use DHCP so I was confident the hardware was ok. Uninstalling the drivers and then updating them has got me passed this problem so I can see and edit the IP parameters. However now they are never saved. I edit them, close the window, re-edit them and they are back to automatic settings! I need to use static settings in the office.
So far as I can see there are 2 possibilities:
1. I don't have permissions to save these settings, wherever they are stored. But I have administrator permissions. Where are the settings stored? I have saved them before. How can I get access to be able to save them again?
2. Something else is overwriting the settings. How do I find out what and stop it?
