I was using a router to access the web with my smart phone. I no longer use a smartphone and have gone back to a home phone.
The router is still hooked up and I was wondering, is the computer utilizing it in any way? Should I leave it hooked up?
I've installed RealPlayer Cloud on desktop with 8.1 hard wired to router. Have Sanyo Smart TV with wi-fi dongle that gets Netflix no problem (Netflix button on remote from factory).

View 2 Replies View RelatedI am sharing my internet connection with my roommates, but lately they have been using P2P to download stuff which uses almost all the internet speed available. I have set up QoS to limit their bandwidth in the main Asus wifi router which directly connects to the modem, it works great for a few days, but then it doesn't work anymore, I still get slow internet speed now. Since my flat has 2 wifi routers, one is the main and another one is set up with a different name but still connects to the main router via the ethernet cable a few metres away so that the wireless range is increased. Just for your information, the two routers are transmitting on different channel, if you think that might be the cause and they have different SSID.
Could it be possible that the QoS only works in the main wifi router and doesn't affect the other wifi router which my roommates also have access to it?
I have changed the default router password so I am sure that they have no access to the router's settings.
Yesterday I purchased a new Dell Laptop. In the setup and configuration the unit found my wireless network. I have two other PC's (not windows 8) two Kindles, two Cell phones and an IPAD on this router and all the Dell would say it it can't connect to this network. It won't ask for the passkey, it provides no additional information and I can't get online in my own network with this system. I can however log on to a neighbors unsecured network effortlessly.
I am using an old airlink 101 wireless router that has been trouble free for several years. I tried to log onto airlink for a support inquiry but they no longer provide support for this model.
I have broadband from virgin media with one of their superhubs made by netgear, I have a CCTV DVR plugged into this using a regular cat5 cable, the DVR will allow you to view 4 cctv cameras via the internet,
Android and blackberry phones can both connect to the router using wifi, an IBM laptop running XP also has no problems, the only thing that does have a problem is a new Toshiba laptop running windows 8,
If the DVR is plugged into router before win 8 connects then the Windows 8 machine cannot log on using wifi, it gives message saying restricted access and has no internet access, if you unplug the DVR Windows 8 machine logs on fine you can then plug DVR back in and laptop can browse all day with no problems, if you log off then try and log on again you get the same restricted access message again ...
I've just upgraded to brand new HTC 8X Windows Phone 8 but I've had to continue using iPhone as my Audi Car Phone System does not see contacts in its Phone Book when connected via bluetooth with my new phone. Phone book access works fine with iPhone4

But in windows 8 im just able to see these options. (Screenshot) no option to use pc as headset or to play audio unlike in windows 7. I am using HTC sensation to connect.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to connect my Samsung Galaxy S III to my new Asus LX302L via bluetooth.Both have bluetooth vers. 4 and I have successfully connected other units to my phone earlier but now it doesn't work.
I can "see" both units and they are linked together via password but that's it. After I linked them together, the status information on the computer says "Not connectet" for the phone. The same information is the phone saying about the computer.All drivers are up to date.
I want to use my phone as a remote using "Unified remote" and I also want to play music via the phone out to the computer speakers. This I have been able to do with my old computer (windows 7) but now it doesn't work.
I have a samsung galaxy s3 plugged into a front usb slot on my cyberpower pc, running windows 8. For charging. My previous computer never had any issues but this one (which is brand new) is having a lot of annoying problems with it.
It has no issue detecting the phone, but any time I touch the phone while it's plugged in. The computer will repeatedly (7-10 times) play the dismounting hardware sound. Followed by several mounting sounds. Over and over for a little while.
I thought maybe it was a connection problem with the cord. But it happens without any interference with the cord. All I have to do is press any button on the phone once and it will mount and unmount the phone obsessively. Which will also open and close the folder for the phone's files, interrupting everything I'm doing at the time.
I have problem with USB 2.0. The problem first begin with app called (zadig.exe) under options i click List all devices.
I think by mistake i change of the drives after that the USB 2.0 stop working. I have USB 3.0 and its fine. The USB 2.0 can charge my phone and the mouse can work in BIOS ONLY. After going to Win 8 is stop working but it will charge my phone.
Since I changed the security parameters to my Linksys Wireless Router so my grandson could log in while visiting me on his laptop. I can't seem to be able to access my other computer on my home network. Enclosed is an "ipconfig/all" screenshot. I need to access my printer on my other printer which I was able to do prior to playing around with my router. All the diagnostics say more or less the same thing. View 4 Replies View RelatedHad drive problems with PC so got new SSD drives and a Hybrid drive.All new drives so did tortuous route install win7 - upgrade to win 8.0 all worked then started acting up. My tech support worked on it for 2 days and gave up said I should backup and do a clean install from start. So I did.
Not yet put any backup files on so only operating system and devices (printer, wireless keyboard/mouse, wireless headset and 3webcams ( One Pluscom and two PCline ) checked device manager and found cameras with yellow exclamation mark and checked properties and saw this webcam.JPG . Download, install and do a reboot and see what happens.

I am obviously logged in as admin as I am the only user who Can use PC and checked permissions which are OK all users having full access.
I have two programs on my hard drive. They both require access to a COM port. When I attempt to access either one it works fine, but I need to have both of them running at the same time---thus I need an additional COM port. When I setup either program, the available port appears (COM 3). It does not allow the entry of any other port or call up an additional one---with all the COM's available, it would seem reasonable to be able to use more than one port at the time! I am using a Dell Pentium Laptop (1545) with Windows 8.1 PRO. The computer has 3G of memory.
View 9 Replies View RelatedFew days ago a friend showed me a great OSx functionality - Smart Folders. Basically it is a "virtual" folder, does not really contains files but rather an active search folder.
Let say you want to have a place that will display only word/text documents created within last 5 days, or only doc files.... regardless of where they really are.
Can you get such functionality in Windows? I know "search" pretty good but using it instead of set folder, means we have to perform search every time we want to display files we look for.
I have a second hard drive on my HP DV7 laptop. It's a 750GB Hitachi.
Last week I started getting a SMART event and it would ask if I wanted to check the disk. Now every time I start the computer, it's running chkdsk and found a bunch of bad clusters. Also Some of my directories are missing, yet the space available remains the same, so its not deleting the directories and freeing up the space.
I'm recovering the data tonight but I have a few questions:
1) My data recovery software has the option to skip bad directories. Should I do this? And if I do not skip this, will this simply transfer the errors to the hard drive that I'm recovering to.
2) If I clean and then reformat, will the disk be usable? Or should I just junk it and get a new one.
I regularly work with EFI partitions (Fat32 formatted as per requirements) on my usb drives (for loading Ubuntu, Windows 8 installs, and Win7 installs), and I cannot seem to access any of these drives in Windows 8.
No matter how many times I format the things to Fat32 I can not even access them at all. I get the error message "You don't currently have permission to access this folder, Click Continue to permanently get access to this folder" <Clicks Continue> "You have been denied access to this folder. To gain access to this folder you will need to use the security tab" <Right-Click, Properties, search for non-existent security tab>.
I understand that the security tab does not exist on Fat32 partitions. But how do we access these drives? The only other way I have found is through elevated command prompt run as administrator. (Which is dumb when you think about it because any virus coded for DOS can essentially access your EFI partition essential to your computer's booting into Windows, but you cannot access it to fix it?) Some days I just wonder what people were thinking when they write software. ~Sigh~
I commonly extract ISO images straight onto Fat32 USB when they contain the /efi/boot structure, but I cannot do this without explorer access (Elevated explorer doesn't work either). MS Dos only sometimes works because of the naming rules associated with it and the xcopy command, etc.
To re-create my disaster, format any USB drive as Fat32 using Windows 8 (or plug one in which is already formatted as such) and try to access it. Then try right clicking the drive and look for said 'security' tab.
TO SUM UP:
I cannot read/write/access Fat32 partitions. It is a re-creatable issue.
I'm trying to use my 3tb external hard drive with my new Toshiba laptop running Windows 8.1. At first the computer recognised the drive, but when I tried to open the files I wanted, (masses of JPEG and RAW photo-files) they did not appear. There were four files listed..all of which were used to run the drive itself...no folders visible at all.
I figured there might be a problem with access so went to a number of possibilities and altered all manner of permissions and sharing options to what I thought would work. The upshot is that now the drive comes up as 'Location Unavailable'...access denied.
Previously I had used the drive on an ancient Vista machine, and still having this laptop, checked that the external drive was working,(it still is, with all files and folders still visible). I also plugged in my Sandisk Cruzer flashdrive and that opened no problems. right click on the drive>properties>sharing>advanced sharing>permissions>checked that 'everyone' was selected then allowed full control, change, read and then OK'd...still no difference.
USB recovery image for a Vivotab Smart? I put mine on a flash drive, deleted it from my tablet's hard drive, and then that flash drive died! It will be a huge file to download but it would be a very important backup.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI have an iomega portable usb drive. I can plug into any of my windows 7 machines and access the files and store data on it. when I put into my win 8 machine it shows in devices and printers and in my computer shows as removable disk but you cannot open it up.
I have went into device manager and tried to update the usb driver installed but no use at all.
really strange that it shows in devices and printers but I cannot get the files.
the thing is I need to install and transfer some backups onto my win 8 machine so I need it to work desperately.
I've install my new laptop (Asus N550JV), which armed with Qualcomm Artheros AR3012 Bluetooth card.The OS is Windows 8.1 (all updates installed).
At first, BT was sort of working. Sort of, because I was able to connect my BT mouse, but on a random basis, the mouse got connected and disconnected.
So... I've tried to do the logical move, and went to Asus` website in order to update the BT drivers. And so I did.
From that point not only that I can't connect my BT mouse but also I'm unable even to access BT settings. When I select Bluetooth on the settings nothing happens. It just gets stuck.
In the device manager BT seems to be installed and running just fine, no error coded whatsoever.

I want to Smart Copy source to destination (1 to 2) but synchronization doesn't work. Here I have a .txt file in source but not updated in destination (I really want it to work vice versa if possible).
I have some programs (on my PC) that I would like to install somehow onto my vivotab. I am not super programmer literate so simple terms are best. I plugged my tablet into my PC to try to just drag the program over (apparently that is a no go). I even got so far as to drag it into the public file and it showed up on my tablet but doesn't work when I try to open it so I don't think it actually moved the whole program.
I do have the CDs for the programs but obviously there is no CD drive on the tablet. I do not have an external CD drive and do not plan on getting one, I am hoping there is some way to just transfer the program from my PC or somehow use my PC AS an augmented CD drive.
I upgraded the O/S to Win8 Pro from Standard in order to use the WMC and now the Sleep mode doesn't behave as before.
how to reset it back to the factory settings? The Win8 RESET function under the Control panel returns it back to a fresh copy of Win8 Pro and not Win8 Standard. I also see a recovery partition on its Hard Drive.
Last week my laptop had trouble starting up, it had a problem with atidvag.dll if I recall. I wasn't sure what to do but I got lucky and after a few attempts in managed to boot. Now however it doesn't even get to the point where it could tell me what is wrong, no Windows logo. Just straight in black screen with a cursor in the top left. F2 will take me to BIOS (if I am quick), but no other keys work. Booted onto installation media to try startup repair, no joy, rollback also no joy, tried using command line following the instructions here to force a boot into safe mode but no joy.

Ive installed windows 8.1 using the generic key but i cant get my key to activate 8.1. when i insert the supplied key into windows it says the key cant be used ( or summit at work atm)
