View 2 Replies View RelatedI have found myself more addicted to my laptop since I installed win 8 on it. Everything I read in the past about win 8 being more for touch screens I was like well I'm not going to upgrade my pc then but now that I have it i'm actually really liking it.
I like the whole metro side of win 8, I mean it really has me thinking. If I can have the same on all my devices I just may dump my Iphone and ipad. I'm assuming the apps on the desktop will be the same for the win 8 phone right? If that is the case, see you later apple I never cared for you much any way...
I have to be honest I don't like switching back to the desktop, I'm sure the desktop will be gone by win 9 or 10 once win eight takes off and third party software goes to the metro side.
One last thing I like to note is if Microsoft promotes win 8 for the phone, tablet and pc all together instead of saying win eight is for touch screens they blow this thru the roof!
I have windows 8.1 and when i plug in my nexus 4, it appears a small window that asks me what i want to do with the device. When i click on it , the only option i have is "take no action" and doesn't open it. my pc sees the device but it doesn't open it.

I have 2 groups of contacts, which are 'family' and 'common contacts'. I pull all contacts from outlook online and facebook, in addition to the phone itself. So family and common contacts do not have all my contacts listed in them, because there are quite a few.
These contact 'boxes' tell me who has texted me in the past, by saying 'New Message', etc. Also, my lock screen tells me if I have missed texts, calls, etc.
Pic of Contacts box:

I have more than 7 messages listed on the lock screen that I cannot find the source to. They aren't in my family or common contacts or it would display 'new message' in the green box, so they must be from someone else in my address book. Also, whenever someone who is not a family or common contact messages me, I get the message, but no notification except on the lock screen (which says how many new messages I have, but not who from).
Our effort to build great software never stops. That's why we periodically release updates for Windows Phone 8 to add new features that maximize your phone's performance. Below is a summary of what we've included in each update so far. The most recent update is listed first. The longer number refers to the Windows Phone operating system (OS) version.
Updates to Windows Phone 8 are cumulative, so when you install the latest update, you'll also get all the previous updates (if your phone doesn't have them already). Only updates that apply to your phone will be downloaded and installed.
When it's available, we'll also pass along software from phone manufacturers that improves the performance of specific phone models. If you have questions about what's included in a phone manufacturer update, contact your phone manufacturer.

I get "The latest device malfunctioned and Windows does not recognize it. There is also Unknown USB device (Device descriptor request failed) listed under Universal Serial Bus controllers in Device manager. Nothing under Portable devices section.
What I have tried:
- replacing usb cable (using original one) -> no luck
- soft reset phone -> no luck
- turning the phone off and plug it in -> no go
- manually uninstalling the device from device manager, restarting the PC and try again -> nope
- plugged brother's lumia 930 -> works like a charm
I've got access to laptop, plugging my phone there and the same problem happens at first - the device can't be recognized but a few moments later somehow it gets recognized and connected. The problem seems to be on my PC, need to completely removing all the Phone drivers (including registry entries) so I can install them fresh?

View 2 Replies View RelatedWhen I use Explorer on Windows 8.1 to copy multiple FLAC files to a folder on the SD card of my Nokia Lumia 625 (running on Windows Phone 8.1) via USB, a dialog window pops up in Explorer, asking me to choose between converting and just copying. If I choose to just copy, a progress bar appears, and it always gets stuck at the end of the first file transfer so I have to cancel or close the progress window, and, as a result, only the first file is transferred. If I copy a single FLAC file instead of multiple ones, the same thing happens at the end of the file transfer. So I am forced to copy the files one at a time, and I have to close the popup window for each of them. Is there any way to solve this?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've got a Lumia 1020 and I'm trying to connect via Bluetooth to a windows 8.1 device. I'm able to pair the devices, but as soon as that process is complete, the connection drops. On my phone, I can tap on the name of my computer, and it will reconnect, but it lasts for literally 3 seconds, before dropping the connection again. I've tried connecting to both my Surface RT and my windows 8.1 ultrabook with the same result. The phone will connect to my car stereo just fine, and I never have to do anything with it. Is there some sort of protocol that's missing in Windows 8 to allow phones to connect via Bluetooth? My main use for this would be music streaming, and using my tablet as a hands free device.
My eventual plan is to mount my Dell Venue 8 Pro in my car as a carpc, so I would like to figure this out somehow. I've tried disabling the Microsoft Bluetooth enumerator, and strictly use the Intel Bluetooth 4.0 adapter, but still, the same thing happens. I can't even stream music from my phone.
I should also mention that I've tried connecting an android phone with the same outcome
I was using a router to access the web with my smart phone. I no longer use a smartphone and have gone back to a home phone.
The router is still hooked up and I was wondering, is the computer utilizing it in any way? Should I leave it hooked up?
I'm trying to connect my Samsung Galaxy S III to my new Asus LX302L via bluetooth. Both have bluetooth vers. 4 and I have successfully connected other units to my phone earlier but now it doesn't work.
I can "see" both units and they are linked together via password but that's it. After I linked them together, the status information on the computer says "Not connectet" for the phone. The same information is the phone saying about the computer. All drivers are up to date.
I want to use my phone as a remote using "Unified remote" and I also want to play music via the phone out to the computer speakers. This I have been able to do with my old computer (windows 7) but now it doesn't work.
I must have made an error upon set-up. Every time I connect a smart phone or tablet, a "windows explorer" window opens, showing the files on the device. I'd like to have the system just do nothing when I connect, but I can not seem to find out how to manage that option. I imagine it would be easy, if I could find it.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm doing research to find out if I should purchase a Windows tablet (Dell Venue or Lenovo Ideatab Miix 8). I'm confused about what apps will run on these systems. I'm looking specifically for a golf gps program. I found a couple programs that look interesting, but they all say that they run on "Windows Phone," or "Windows 8 phone". Would these run on my full Windows 8 tablets? All of these Windows versions are really confusing to me.
I'm looking at Windows tablets because of the current mess that Google has made of the Android operating system. Google's latest update (codename "Kit Kat") breaks access to micro-sd cards on Android tablets and phones. This change is specifically why I am strongly considering Windows tablets instead of an Android tablet. Here's a link to an article describing the problem . Microsoft should use this deficiency in their advertising:
KitKat and SD cards ? what's fixed, what's broken and what's misunderstood | Android Central
If I can find a good Golf GPS program for a Windows table, I'll probably pull the trigger on one of these Windows tablets.
I have 2 Microsoft accounts. I have enabled 2 step verification for both of them. With one account, I was able to enter my cell phone number to complete the process, so I would receive a text message if a device I haven't set to trusted tries to log in to that account. I tried the same process on the second account, and whenever I try to enter the same cell phone number, I get an error page that the service is 'temporarily unavailable'. I have tried every combination of entering the cell phone number that I can think of, and nothing works for that second account.
With the first account, I was using the Opera browser to enter the information. With the second account, I was using IE 10. With the second account, I get an e-mail with a verification code if an untrusted device tries to log in. This is OK, but I would prefer to receive a text to my cell phone instead, as I do not always have such instant access to my e-mail account.
Or can you not use the same cell phone number for 2 accounts?
Edited to add: This is the exact message I get when I try to have MS send a code to my cell phone:
There's a temporary problem with the service. Please try again. If you continue to get this message, try again later.
I've been doing some research online this evening, doing a search with that message. It looks like this is pretty hopeless. Once people see this message in relation to any MS services, there seems to be no solution for it. I guess I should just be grateful that I at least haven't been locked out of my Windows Live account entirely, since Windows 8 is so tied to being able to connect to one's Microsoft account. Of course, the account I use for my throw-away Hotmail account works just fine.
The format I've used for the phone number is (XXX) XXX-XXXX . I've tried variations of that with brackets, spaces, and hyphens, nothing works, but at least e-mail verification still does.
I have a samsung galaxy s3 plugged into a front usb slot on my cyberpower pc, running windows 8. For charging. My previous computer never had any issues but this one (which is brand new) is having a lot of annoying problems with it.
It has no issue detecting the phone, but any time I touch the phone while it's plugged in. The computer will repeatedly (7-10 times) play the dismounting hardware sound. Followed by several mounting sounds. Over and over for a little while.
I thought maybe it was a connection problem with the cord. But it happens without any interference with the cord. All I have to do is press any button on the phone once and it will mount and unmount the phone obsessively. Which will also open and close the folder for the phone's files, interrupting everything I'm doing at the time.
When Windows 8 menu appears on start and I choose W7 - instead of loading W7directly , the computer is new-starting again and only than starts w7. That's a funny "behaviour"....
Also, after starting the computer, the menu is not directly shown up, first is this turning wi8 circle (like in the setup) and only about 30 sec. later comes the menu. I am using windows 8 enterprise, test version.
Have a question regarding "Local Account". I'm having problems connecting to the Win 8 laptop from Win 7 as it will not accept my sign in credentials. With that, am I to assume that this is because the credential aren't "Local", and thus this is what this is for???
It will not accept the "Microsoft" account I use to log into Win 8 laptop.
With that, if I choose to go with the "local account" can I easily switch back to the Microsoft one?
I had windows 7 and outlook express on it. The computer crashed. I had to get a whole new computer with windows 8 and just outlook. I have a folder with all my old outlook express emails in it but it is not compatible with outlook and I NEED an email in the old outlook express file. How the heck can I get this? When I try to open the old files it says " must be opened with outlook".
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have a few questions about dual booting windows 7 and windows 8 preinstalled (UEFI) on my Dell laptop.
1. Can I install a non-UEFI version of Windows 7 on my laptop, if so how?
2. Will installing a non-UEFI version of Windows 7 on my laptop break it?
3. Can I use EasyBCD for UEFI?
4. How do I create a UEFI windows 7?
In a few days I will receive a Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon with Windows 8 installed. And separately I will receive an OEM Win7. Win7 is certainly what I intend to use, and I had originally thought I would wipe out Windows 8 and install Win7. But now I am wondering if I can somehow preserve Windows 8 for occasional use. (I would have ordered the machine with Win7 but this is a refurbished machine.)
I would rather not have to understand UEFI. (I'm sure it would be interesting, I just have other things to do with my time.) And, although I do it sometimes, and will if I have to, I do not like diddling with BIOS settings.
I know that factory installed operating systems generally can't be moved to other machines. And I fear that the factory installed Windows 8 that I will receive may not even tolerate being installed, e.g., in a smaller partition or under something like VMware (another complication I'd like to avoid).
I am currently running windows 8 64bit OS. I have a windows 7 32bit .iso file. I want to install the windows 7 32 bit while keeping the windows 8 64bit too.
