Tablets :: Run Windows Phone Apps On A Windows 8.1 Tablet
May 10, 2014
I'm doing research to find out if I should purchase a Windows tablet (Dell Venue or Lenovo Ideatab Miix 8). I'm confused about what apps will run on these systems. I'm looking specifically for a golf gps program. I found a couple programs that look interesting, but they all say that they run on "Windows Phone," or "Windows 8 phone". Would these run on my full Windows 8 tablets? All of these Windows versions are really confusing to me.
I'm looking at Windows tablets because of the current mess that Google has made of the Android operating system. Google's latest update (codename "Kit Kat") breaks access to micro-sd cards on Android tablets and phones. This change is specifically why I am strongly considering Windows tablets instead of an Android tablet. Here's a link to an article describing the problem . Microsoft should use this deficiency in their advertising:

If I can find a good Golf GPS program for a Windows table, I'll probably pull the trigger on one of these Windows tablets.
I must have made an error upon set-up. Every time I connect a smart phone or tablet, a "windows explorer" window opens, showing the files on the device. I'd like to have the system just do nothing when I connect, but I can not seem to find out how to manage that option. I imagine it would be easy, if I could find it.
Would I be able to integrate a Windows 8 tablet with my windows 8 PC? I want to have all the touch fun and ease of use but with it basically working as a remote for the pc. Like the computer is doing all the processing and software running.
How to make Windows 8 desktop more usable? I was thinking of adding a mac os x style dock, since that seems a lot easier to use on a tablet. The icons are all pretty big and easily clickable.
Was thinking of modding the skin of windows 8 to make it look like mac os x. It seems like mac os x desktop is more touchscreen friendly,as in everything is accessible easily. Making the desktop bigger/up font just makes it look too big.
I got a Venue 8 Pro and have been playing around with it. The keyboard itself is nice, but it's not autocorrecting anything. It shows the normal squiggly red underline when I misspell a word. This makes typing on it really difficult compared to my other mobile devices.
I checked if it was enabled in the settings (Modern UI), and it is. The switch is gray, but I can switch it on and off.
I did an update right after getting the tablet and it still doesn't work. I've tried rebooting a couple of times.
Any way to do a clean install of Windows 8.1 on a Windows 8 tablet.
Tablet Model is ASUS VivoTab Smart ME400C-C2.
It came originally with Windows 8 32bit. I was wanting to know if there is a possibility of doing this with a Windows 8.1 Disc.
Now I know there is a way to hook up a portable optical drive with a cable called a USB OTG.
I was told by ASUS though i would not be able to boot from the optical drive like a PC or Laptop could and to be able to boot from this OS disc so i can do the install this way.
So is there is a way maybe by making a disc. image and putting it on it's MicroSD or running it directly from the disc, i am not sure how this would work wanting to do a custom install.
Question is there any differences with the Windows 8 OS on the tablet now, compared to the OS on the disc usually used for a PC or Laptop ?
I have an Asus VivoTab Smart that comes with Windows 8, and before I can do the 8.1 upgrade, I have to install all 112 updates. This was going just fine until after it rebooted, and now it's been stuck on the "Failure configuring Windows updates, Reverting changes" screen for about the past 12+ hours. I restarted it a couple of times by holding down the power button, but it comes right back to the same screen after the Asus splash screen. Were this a laptop, I know exactly how to fix it (go to Advanced Recovery Options), but since it's a new tablet that I haven't yet connected its Bluetooth keyboard to, I'm basically stuck. I can't even boot to a flash drive because that requires a keyboard to get to the boot options.I don't have a keyboard attached to it and because the OS isn't loaded (can't get the Charms bar so I can restart it that way or boot into Safe Mode or anything.)
I have a tablet with a relatively small amount of space on the internal storage. I noticed today that the hiberfil.sys file is rather large. I have found a way to turn off hibernation.
My questions are: Is hibernate even useful on a tablet? If I disable it, will it hurt anything?
I got all the devices properly installed & touch worked out of the box, no optional drivers needed.. however, the touch screen is upside down..
here's what i tried so far:
Windows 8 calibration : the normal way
Windows 8 calibration : upside down (i thought it could've worked since it reads everything upside down)
eGalax touch driver: this made the touchscreen be recognized as a mouse, which works great, but the touch features aren't supported..
changing the screen orientation has no effect, as the touch input rotates with the screen.. i tried this through "display resolution" & the nvidia control panel, but they had no effect at all..
I tried to go to the display settings page to enlarge the font and apps size under "("change the size of apps, text and other items..") in PC settings of Windows 8, and was greeted by this message: "Your Resolution is lower than 1280x900 Some items might not fit on your screen" and the "more options" section with "change the size of apps, text items" is disabled. I checked twice, my resolution is the T100 native 1368x768, so why does windows 8.1 think its something else? also tried switching to a lower resolution and back again, rebooting, etc. I also tried downloading and installing all Windows updates and Asus updates.
attached is the screenshot showing Windows 8 both showing the correct resolution and complaining that it is not on the correct resolution.
I have found myself more addicted to my laptop since I installed win 8 on it. Everything I read in the past about win 8 being more for touch screens I was like well I'm not going to upgrade my pc then but now that I have it i'm actually really liking it.
I like the whole metro side of win 8, I mean it really has me thinking. If I can have the same on all my devices I just may dump my Iphone and ipad. I'm assuming the apps on the desktop will be the same for the win 8 phone right? If that is the case, see you later apple I never cared for you much any way...
I have to be honest I don't like switching back to the desktop, I'm sure the desktop will be gone by win 9 or 10 once win eight takes off and third party software goes to the metro side.
One last thing I like to note is if Microsoft promotes win 8 for the phone, tablet and pc all together instead of saying win eight is for touch screens they blow this thru the roof!
i have a windows 8 laptop and was woundering why i cant use a app like Pandora for my laptop . its in your windows phone app sotre but not for the laptop store? i don't understand why. both are the same . or is it the app itself only going for windows phone? i would love to get all access to all apps on windows phone for my laptop. ty
I've just upgraded to brand new HTC 8X Windows Phone 8 but I've had to continue using iPhone as my Audi Car Phone System does not see contacts in its Phone Book when connected via bluetooth with my new phone. Phone book access works fine with iPhone4
I just got a Toshiba Encore tablet that has some form of GPS capability. I need some sort of GPS app or software that I can use offline, or at least figure out how to pre-load areas for offline use.
All of a sudden my Windows 8.1 Dell Latitude 10 tablet cannot access most all of the Win32 applications. I go to access an item in windows explorer or say device manager and get a message system could not access or may not have permission. Most programs seem to be working, but a lot of services are not such as WiFi, sound, network etc. since I cannot access win32 applications I can not get into services.
Long story short, my Apps are not connecting to the internet following some disastrous anti-virus faffing about. I've now removed Norton and AVG completely and have avast (but reading elsewhere here, I believe that I should probably get rid of that as well?).
Now, I've got to the point, through your very good forum, of understanding that I need to do this Run CMD 'Command Prompt' as administrator. In the command line type: netsh winsock reset Press enter then restart your PC, the problem solved. So I tried that, but it hasn't resolved the problem.
I have windows 8.1 and when i plug in my nexus 4, it appears a small window that asks me what i want to do with the device. When i click on it , the only option i have is "take no action" and doesn't open it. my pc sees the device but it doesn't open it.
How I have my phone set up: Phone is Nokia Lumia 520 - ATT
I have 2 groups of contacts, which are 'family' and 'common contacts'. I pull all contacts from outlook online and facebook, in addition to the phone itself. So family and common contacts do not have all my contacts listed in them, because there are quite a few.
These contact 'boxes' tell me who has texted me in the past, by saying 'New Message', etc. Also, my lock screen tells me if I have missed texts, calls, etc.

I have more than 7 messages listed on the lock screen that I cannot find the source to. They aren't in my family or common contacts or it would display 'new message' in the green box, so they must be from someone else in my address book. Also, whenever someone who is not a family or common contact messages me, I get the message, but no notification except on the lock screen (which says how many new messages I have, but not who from).
Our effort to build great software never stops. That's why we periodically release updates for Windows Phone 8 to add new features that maximize your phone's performance. Below is a summary of what we've included in each update so far. The most recent update is listed first. The longer number refers to the Windows Phone operating system (OS) version.
Updates to Windows Phone 8 are cumulative, so when you install the latest update, you'll also get all the previous updates (if your phone doesn't have them already). Only updates that apply to your phone will be downloaded and installed.
When it's available, we'll also pass along software from phone manufacturers that improves the performance of specific phone models. If you have questions about what's included in a phone manufacturer update, contact your phone manufacturer.

Tip How to Check for and Install Windows Phone Software Updates
Ever since the latest WP update (currently on WP8.1 Update, firmware 3051.50009.1424.0003) my Windows 8.1 PC doesn't detect my Lumia. I get "The latest device malfunctioned and Windows does not recognize it. There is also Unknown USB device (Device descriptor request failed) listed under Universal Serial Bus controllers in Device manager. Nothing under Portable devices section.
What I have tried: - replacing usb cable (using original one) -> no luck - soft reset phone -> no luck - turning the phone off and plug it in -> no go - manually uninstalling the device from device manager, restarting the PC and try again -> nope - plugged brother's lumia 930 -> works like a charm
I've got access to laptop, plugging my phone there and the same problem happens at first - the device can't be recognized but a few moments later somehow it gets recognized and connected. The problem seems to be on my PC, need to completely removing all the Phone drivers (including registry entries) so I can install them fresh?
When I use Explorer on Windows 8.1 to copy multiple FLAC files to a folder on the SD card of my Nokia Lumia 625 (running on Windows Phone 8.1) via USB, a dialog window pops up in Explorer, asking me to choose between converting and just copying. If I choose to just copy, a progress bar appears, and it always gets stuck at the end of the first file transfer so I have to cancel or close the progress window, and, as a result, only the first file is transferred. If I copy a single FLAC file instead of multiple ones, the same thing happens at the end of the file transfer. So I am forced to copy the files one at a time, and I have to close the popup window for each of them. Is there any way to solve this?
I have problem with USB 2.0. The problem first begin with app called (zadig.exe) under options i click List all devices.
I think by mistake i change of the drives after that the USB 2.0 stop working. I have USB 3.0 and its fine. The USB 2.0 can charge my phone and the mouse can work in BIOS ONLY. After going to Win 8 is stop working but it will charge my phone.
