Syncing Outlook Contacts With Phone
May 9, 2014I had to remove all of my contacts from my phone (reason is too long to explain) and now want to sync my contacts from Outlook to the phone via Outlook.com EAS. My concern is that when I start the sync process, the phone will send the empty contact list to Outlook, thereby wiping out all of my contacts. is there a way to ensure that the sync goes from Outlook to the phone only, and not the other way around?

May 10, 2014I'm doing research to find out if I should purchase a Windows tablet (Dell Venue or Lenovo Ideatab Miix 8). I'm confused about what apps will run on these systems. I'm looking specifically for a golf gps program. I found a couple programs that look interesting, but they all say that they run on "Windows Phone," or "Windows 8 phone". Would these run on my full Windows 8 tablets? All of these Windows versions are really confusing to me.
I'm looking at Windows tablets because of the current mess that Google has made of the Android operating system. Google's latest update (codename "Kit Kat") breaks access to micro-sd cards on Android tablets and phones. This change is specifically why I am strongly considering Windows tablets instead of an Android tablet. Here's a link to an article describing the problem . Jun 9, 2014Alright so I have a PC with a licensed Windows 8.1 Pro, been logging in with Microsoft account for about 3-4 months now and I absolutely love it. I purchased a laptop 5 days ago, and decided to format the whole thing and do a fresh install (the way I like it ).
Of course I signed it with Microsoft account and everything was just lovely. My Metro apps came back, my theme synced etc.
The only problem I have is that my desktop background refuses to sync. I remember having "Synced theme" on my new laptop under My themes (Desktop right click -> Personalize) but I deleted that and now how to get it back
TL;DR Signed in with MS account on my PC and laptop and desktop background doesn't sync. I deleted "Synced theme" and how to restore it.

Apr 2, 2014Until the other day my drive was working perfectly. Since then I have made no changes to the system, but syncing has stopped. The drive icon constantly says checking for changes and then appears to crash. It has also started "finding files" and i am unable to change options to view online of offline while "setup is being completed" the trouble is it never completes... I can add docs etc from the web and it will sync on other PCs but my win 8.1 tablet refuses to play ball. I have spoken with Microsoft and they want me to pay for the solution (maybe). I have tried the troubleshooter but no luck.

Jul 23, 2014I'm having a little bit of difficulty here syncing my Microsoft account's settings between these two devices. I had spent a great deal of time organizing the start screen layout of my Surface Pro 3 the day I received it. My desktop computer, however, has a jumbled mess of a start screen. Going through my sync settings today, I noticed there was an option to sync the layout of the start screen of my specific account. I thought, "Great! All that time I spent organizing my Surface can be transferred to this mess of a machine!"
Instead of syncing my nicely planned out and organized Surface Start Screen to the desktop computer, the horrid and wretched Desktop computer start screen synced itself to my beautiful Surface.
Before I make the same mistake twice, is there a way to choose which start screen syncs to which device? Also, I've come to terms with the fact that I'm going to have to reorganize a start screen. I only plan on doing it once and then syncing it to the other device, so would it be safer to do it via the desktop computer?

Oct 22, 2013Before installing Windows 8.1 anything that I put into my Skydrive folder (I had the desktop app) were automatically synced to Skydrive.com as well as my Android phone app, and anything I uploaded from my phone app were synced to Skydrive.com and were automatically downloaded to my Skydrive folder. Now my phone app and Skydrive.com still work fine, but the Skydrive folder does not. That is, nothing gets downloaded to my Skydrive folder and nothing gets uploaded to Skydrive.com from it.
I've tried different settings for it, I've tried offline only, online only, I've toggled settings in the Settings app, and nothing.
Something else that happens is that now there are duplicates of all of the files in the My Documents folder. Say that my PC is named Smith-PC. Now, for example, there is a file called Random Document.docx and Random Document-Smith-PC.docx. And this is for every single file in the My Documents folder. Furthermore, only the version with the Smith-PC in the name works. When I open the normally named file, I get an error:
"An unexpected error is keeping you from copying the file. If you continue to receive this error, you can use the error code to search for solution of this problem. Error 0x80070490: Element not found."
This is really annoying and now I have duplicates of all of my documents, half of which won't open and the other half which are named wrong with Smith-PC at the end of all of them.
Same Metro Apps On Windows 8 Phone?
Jul 22, 2012I have found myself more addicted to my laptop since I installed win 8 on it. Everything I read in the past about win 8 being more for touch screens I was like well I'm not going to upgrade my pc then but now that I have it i'm actually really liking it.
I like the whole metro side of win 8, I mean it really has me thinking. If I can have the same on all my devices I just may dump my Iphone and ipad. I'm assuming the apps on the desktop will be the same for the win 8 phone right? If that is the case, see you later apple I never cared for you much any way...
I have to be honest I don't like switching back to the desktop, I'm sure the desktop will be gone by win 9 or 10 once win eight takes off and third party software goes to the metro side.
One last thing I like to note is if Microsoft promotes win 8 for the phone, tablet and pc all together instead of saying win eight is for touch screens they blow this thru the roof!
Windows 8.1 Doesn't Open Phone?

Feb 19, 2014I have strange network problem these days. I have a desktop PC and installed Windows 8.1. And I have a LAN. The gateway IP address is 192.168.2.1.
The network works fine when I start the PC. I can access Internet with IE, I can access the config pages of my gateway and I can SSH my local File server. It's a synology ds212j. I assigned static IP address 192.168.2.18 to it and name it as "home_ds". I add dns entry in file "hosts".
But there will be very strange problems if the PC keeps running about 2/3 days. It seems I can't connect to other computers from my PC. No IE, no SSH, no ftp.... But ping still work. These is no network device listed in my network folder. But I still can access the mapped network drives.
For example, I can ping www.google.com, I can ping 192.168.2.1 and 192.168.2.18 and "home_ds".

I tried:

I tied putty, msn, outlook,... all failed. But my wife's PC works normally at the same time.
In the network folder, there should be a list of all my network devices, including my wife's PC and my File server. But it's empty if this problem happens. However I can add them mannually and I can access the network drives.
And I can connect to my PC from my wife's PC with remote desktop.
If I logout and login again, the network will recover except 1 new problem. That is I can't access the network drives of my File Server with computer name "home_ds", but IP address works. And I can ping it with computer name.

A restart will solve both the above 2 problems. But I don't want to restart my PC so frequently.
I tried to solve this problem by update windows and drivers but failed.

Phone is Nokia Lumia 520 - ATT
I have 2 groups of contacts, which are 'family' and 'common contacts'. I pull all contacts from outlook online and facebook, in addition to the phone itself. So family and common contacts do not have all my contacts listed in them, because there are quite a few.
These contact 'boxes' tell me who has texted me in the past, by saying 'New Message', etc. Also, my lock screen tells me if I have missed texts, calls, etc.

I have more than 7 messages listed on the lock screen that I cannot find the source to. They aren't in my family or common contacts or it would display 'new message' in the green box, so they must be from someone else in my address book. Also, whenever someone who is not a family or common contact messages me, I get the message, but no notification except on the lock screen (which says how many new messages I have, but not who from).

Aug 28, 2014Ever since the latest WP update (currently on WP8.1 Update, firmware 3051.50009.1424.0003) my Windows 8.1 PC doesn't detect my Lumia. I get "The latest device malfunctioned and Windows does not recognize it. There is also Unknown USB device (Device descriptor request failed) listed under Universal Serial Bus controllers in Device manager. Nothing under Portable devices section.
What I have tried:
- replacing usb cable (using original one) -> no luck
- soft reset phone -> no luck
- turning the phone off and plug it in -> no go
- manually uninstalling the device from device manager, restarting the PC and try again -> nope
- plugged brother's lumia 930 -> works like a charm
I've got access to laptop, plugging my phone there and the same problem happens at first - the device can't be recognized but a few moments later somehow it gets recognized and connected. The problem seems to be on my PC, need to completely removing all the Phone drivers (including registry entries) so I can install them fresh?
