Network / Sharing :: Cannot Remote Desktop FROM Windows 8 Laptop To XP Desktop
Feb 9, 2014I'm a Windows 8. I'm trying to RDP from my new Windows 8 laptop to an XP desktop, both of which are on my home network. When I try, I get the below error...
Remote Desktop can't connect to the remote computer for one of these reasons:
1) Remote access to the server is not enabled
2) The remote computer is turned off
3) The remote computer is not available on the network
As best as I can tell, none of the conditions above is true. Here is what I have looked at so far...
- On the XP machine, in System settings / Remote, "Allow users to connect to this system" is Checked. I have successfully RDP'd to this machine in the past, but this is the first time I've tried from the Windows 8 machine.
- From the Windows 8 machine, I can ping the XP machine, and I can access a shared drive on the XP machine. In fact, I've been moving files between the XP machine and the Windows 8 machine, in both directions, all day.
- Just to eliminate another potential issue, I have set the username and password on the Windows 8 machine to match that on the XP machine.
Incidentally, XP machine is running XP Pro, 2002, SP3.

Sep 15, 2014I have both a laptop and a desktop, both of which were running Windows 8 until recently, with the desktop not having a wireless internet card. In order to connect it to the internet, I had to pass the internet through it via ethernet cable from my laptop. Well, not that long ago, I updated my laptop to Windows 8.1, and now my desktop recognizes the connection, but I cannot get online at all with it.

Oct 22, 2013Before installing Windows 8.1 anything that I put into my Skydrive folder (I had the desktop app) were automatically synced to Skydrive.com as well as my Android phone app, and anything I uploaded from my phone app were synced to Skydrive.com and were automatically downloaded to my Skydrive folder. Now my phone app and Skydrive.com still work fine, but the Skydrive folder does not. That is, nothing gets downloaded to my Skydrive folder and nothing gets uploaded to Skydrive.com from it.
I've tried different settings for it, I've tried offline only, online only, I've toggled settings in the Settings app, and nothing.
Something else that happens is that now there are duplicates of all of the files in the My Documents folder. Say that my PC is named Smith-PC. Now, for example, there is a file called Random Document.docx and Random Document-Smith-PC.docx. And this is for every single file in the My Documents folder. Furthermore, only the version with the Smith-PC in the name works. When I open the normally named file, I get an error:
"An unexpected error is keeping you from copying the file. If you continue to receive this error, you can use the error code to search for solution of this problem. Error 0x80070490: Element not found."
This is really annoying and now I have duplicates of all of my documents, half of which won't open and the other half which are named wrong with Smith-PC at the end of all of them.
Windows 8.1 Sync Settings - Desktop Background Not Syncing
Jun 9, 2014Alright so I have a PC with a licensed Windows 8.1 Pro, been logging in with Microsoft account for about 3-4 months now and I absolutely love it. I purchased a laptop 5 days ago, and decided to format the whole thing and do a fresh install (the way I like it ).
Of course I signed it with Microsoft account and everything was just lovely. My Metro apps came back, my theme synced etc.
The only problem I have is that my desktop background refuses to sync. I remember having "Synced theme" on my new laptop under My themes (Desktop right click -> Personalize) but I deleted that and now how to get it back
TL;DR Signed in with MS account on my PC and laptop and desktop background doesn't sync. I deleted "Synced theme" and how to restore it.
Tablets :: Syncing Settings Between Surface Pro 3 And Desktop
Jul 23, 2014I'm having a little bit of difficulty here syncing my Microsoft account's settings between these two devices. I had spent a great deal of time organizing the start screen layout of my Surface Pro 3 the day I received it. My desktop computer, however, has a jumbled mess of a start screen. Going through my sync settings today, I noticed there was an option to sync the layout of the start screen of my specific account. I thought, "Great! All that time I spent organizing my Surface can be transferred to this mess of a machine!"
Instead of syncing my nicely planned out and organized Surface Start Screen to the desktop computer, the horrid and wretched Desktop computer start screen synced itself to my beautiful Surface.
Before I make the same mistake twice, is there a way to choose which start screen syncs to which device? Also, I've come to terms with the fact that I'm going to have to reorganize a start screen. I only plan on doing it once and then syncing it to the other device, so would it be safer to do it via the desktop computer?

May 6, 2014My 8.1 laptop shows multiple network connections to my Samsung Smart TV --- One as "media connections" and 3 as "other connections". Both devices are on a simple wireless network using Linksys WRT54GS.
Under the "Network" page, most of the "Properties" of the TV connections are the same except for "Serial Number" and "Unique Identifier". Did I do something wrong when setting things up? Are these extra connections harmful? Should I delete some? How?

Jun 9, 2014I purchased a new Windows 8, Inspiron 15 7000 series - 7537 last December. I had been using a router at a hotel for the time, and it worked correctly. When I arrived home, I had a Belkin router, and i experienced network issues in that i could not connect to the wifi. I could connect with Ethernet cable. The problem was fixed through customer support eventually, but I now have a new Comcast router, and i'm experiencing what appears to be the same or a similar issue. I can access the internet fine by wire. With wifi, it says i have access to the internet over the internet icon in the bottom right, but i cannot access webpages. I can use skype, and communicate through it.

May 19, 2014Strange behavior on my Win 8.1 desktop with a shortcut to Control PanelNetwork ConnectionsEthernet Network. After a system startup, (as administrator) the shortcut can "Disable" the network connection by right clicking the shortcut and selecting "Disable". Later, when the shortcut is right clicked again, the context menu still says "Disable". I would call this a failure to update the shortcut, but what is actually happening.
In order to get the shortcut to "update" itself, I have only to open the Control PanelNetwork Connections window. Magically, the shortcut will then reflect the true state of the network when right clicking the shortcut on the desktop.
what is necessary to keep the shortcut updated?

Jan 19, 2014Been having trouble this morning with my network drive in my Home Server. It normally connects fine at startup and it all of a sudden wont work.
I have isolated it to my Desktop as i can connect off of my Laptop fine.
The name of my server is Homeserver(192.168.1.77) and I have shared a folder inside the drive rather than the drive its self. This image shows how I'm trying to connect to the folder. And this is the error I'm getting
I have tried:
Resetting ip / dns flushing etc.
sfc /scannow (Says everything is fine.)
Windows 8.1: files in folders on network drive not visible
W2K3 Server can access W8 W8 computer cant see W2K server
Also tried disabling norton on my desktop but still wont work
Network / Sharing :: Lenovo G505 Laptop - Cannot Connect To Home Network - BT Router
Dec 30, 2013I have a lenovo G505 laptop - it will no longer connect to my BT home hub despite it showing as being available. I suspect it might be to do with the fact that it is has a passkey - I entered it yesterday when prompted and it connected fine, but now I'm not being given the option of entering the key.
I've also tried connected using the BT wifi (as opposed to homehub) but once again it will not connect me. I've been through all the troubleshooting options, and searched under every term I can think of, but nothing is working.
Network / Sharing :: Win 8.1 Laptop - Network Not Available Instantly After Resume From Sleep
Jun 11, 2014I have a frustrating problem on my Windows 8.1 laptop that only started a couple of weeks ago.
Previously, whenever I resumed my laptop from sleep mode, the network would always be instantly available too. I've always been impressed with the speeds of resuming from sleep in Windows 8, it's all pretty instant and means I can get straight back to browsing etc once I've entered my password.
Now, if I wake the laptop from sleep, I enter my password and the network appears to not be available for about a minute or so. Then it functions normally, but it's very, very frustrating as I can't work out the cause. When I resume, if I try and refresh webpages, I get 'network not available' errors in Chrome, but the monitors (I use Network Activity Indicator) in the system tray don't show a loss of network connectivity (i.e - there is no red 'X' over the wireless signal bars)
Sometimes, if when entering my password I get it incorrect, it will say "PC is offline. Please enter the last password you logged on with" - I am assuming this is also due to the above problem.
Why could this have suddenly started happening? No settings have changed/been changed on the router side.

I tried using both IP and netBIOS name. Ping works just fine in both ways.
Now, One thing is clear. something is wrong in Windows 8 settings or something.
assuming that Remote Support is allowed in here... is there something I am missing in Windows 8 configuration?

Jan 30, 2013I am running windows 8 pro, I have the "alow remote access" checked as I should and I have read plenty of threads on how to do it. Now, when I am at work, I want to remote into my home desktop. My work pc is win 7 pro. When I enter my home ip it gives the "cannot connect" either the computer is this or that etc.
I followed the guide but to no avail. AS long as my home pc is set to accept remote connections, why am I having this issue.?

Dec 11, 2013I had a PC running Windows 7 Pro with SP1, in a remote location, that I would wake up using WOL and then operate using Remote Desktop. At the conclusion of the session I would shut down the pc until I needed it again. I upgraded that PC and now find that WOL using Windows 8.1 will only work if the PC is in the Hibernate mode. That's fine but I can't find a way to put it in Hibernate using Remote Desktop. While using Remote Desktop my choices are limited to Disconnect and Sign out. There is no command line command to put the Windows 8.1 pc in hibernate mode.
How I can put the remote Windows 8.1 pc into hibernate at the end of a remote desktop session so I can restart it with WOL when needed again?

Aug 20, 2014On my Toshiba laptop (I've only had it since the 8th of August) under Networks it says, "No connections are available". I was playing Diablo3 and then it suddenly said not connected to battletnet. That is besides the point, but I think I might have hit something that turned the wifi off. After failing to fix it with a system restore it blue screened saying something about an error and collecting a data and that it was going to restart itself. Then it said to get more information or something like that the error code was MEMORY_MANAGEMENT. After restarting I thought it was still messed up (it showed no networks available in the lock screen) then I logged on and it still did. Then it showed I was connected to WiFi again, then after leaving for a few brief minutes it was back to no connections available. It did the blue screen thing again and restarted.

Then when I woke up this morning, I turn on the wifi but it says "no network found". I check the router and it is working perfectly fine. I also checked the device driver and its also working properly.

Feb 1, 2014I did NOT create a restore point before doing the upgrade.
About a week ago, I updated my Windows 8 laptop (a year-old Lenovo Ideapad) to Windows 8.1. At first, it appeared that the upgrade went flawlessly. After a couple of hours though, the crack started showing. I found two issues:
1. I could connect to the internet after a reboot, but if I didn't ACTIVELY continue working on the internet, the connection would die. The only way that I could get it to 'resume' was to reboot. I was using a wireless connection. Tried a wired connection with the same issue. No other machine on the network were experiencing the issue.
2. I use Remote Desktop EXTENSIVELY to connect to client machines. All connections work EXCEPT for one which uses an RD Gateway within the connection. That connection will appear to start connecting after I enter the credentials, then simply close. No error. No message. The RDP connection simply closes. I tried building the connection again from scratch. Same issue.
3. Meanwhile, I noticed that my email (via Outlook 2010) never stopped...THAT part of the internet connection remains 'solid'. Very odd.
No matter what troubleshooting I did, I couldn't solve the problem. So, I decided to see if it was Windows 8.1 or my machine.
I went out an purchased (albeit probably temporarily) a brand new Toshiba Satellite (L55-A5284) with Windows 8.1 ALREADY INSTALLED. No upgrade required. I turned on the machine, and did NOTHING ELSE, but create a Remote Desktop connection to my client. I was able to connect instantly. YEAH! Must be MY upgrade on the Lenovo, not Windows 8.1.
Then, things get REALLY weird (or weirder). I signed off of the client site (I mean, after all, I'd proven that it was my old machine and NOT Windows 8.1, hadn't I?). Almost as soon as I'd signed off and shut the computer off, I realized that I needed something from the client machine. Since it will take me a while to restore my Lenovo, I figured that I'd get work taken care of first, and went to turn on and use the new laptop (Toshiba). Well, imagine my surprise when I could NOT CONNECT again via RDP on the new Toshiba with nothing additional installed on it except for the Remote Desktop connection.
I had let the system update Windows when I shut down and figured that it must be the update that was just installed, so I restored the machine back to factory (I mean why not...I had only created one Remote Desktop connection on the machine). After the restore THE CONNECTION WORKED AGAIN. Sign on, check. Sign off, check. Sign on again, NOPE. Restore computer (again), Sign on, check. Sign off, check. Sign on again, NOPE. So, while I am far from being a hardware specialist, it seems to me that something isn't 'releasing' when I sign off. EVEN A REBOOT (hard or restart) doesn't work. The only thing which solves the issue is a RESTORE - either the kind that saves your files or the one that resets to factory...either one 'resets' the connection, so that I can get on again ONE TIME.
I'm guessing that whatever's the issue with the new laptop (Toshiba) is also causing the internet instability AND the RDP problem on the old laptop (Lenovo).

Sep 16, 2013Just got a brand-new desktop. Unfortunately, I will not be able to use an ethernet cable BUT I have a USB network adapter. I know for sure that it works (I've used it on my laptop). The network adapter seems to have installed properly; I am able to pull up "Available Networks". However, when I try to connect to my home Wi-Fi and put in my password, it always says "connecting to the network is taking longer than usual" and then never connects. Multiple other devices in the house (smartphones, laptops, desktops) are all connecting to our network with no problems.
I've tried all of the Windows troubleshooters and wizards --- didn't work.
I've tried changing the wireless network channel from 6 to 8 --- didn't work.
I've tried netsh winsock reset catalog and netsh int ip reset reset.log hit in the command prompt --- didn't work.
It now shows that it has "limited" connection...but I cannot pull anything up in the browser. What the troubleshooter is telling me now is: "Wi-Fi does not have a valid IP configuration".

Apr 3, 2012I finally found a "problem" with the Windows 8 desktop. Its a problem in Windows 7 too but I had never started a Homegroup. The darn icon won't move and you can't delete it. There is a Windows 7 fix for the problem at HomeGroup Desktop Icon - Add or Remove - Windows 7 Forums and it works with Windows 8.
If you want access to the Homegroup shortcut be sure to pin it to the start menu (I guess we call that the Start screen now) before you delete it.

Nov 4, 2012I upgraded my Windows 7 laptop to Windows 8 and none of the apps work and they all show offline. When I open the desktop I can use the internet with no problem. In the network and sharing options it says that I am not connected to a network when clearly I am so I'm guessing it is possibly a network/IPv6 issue?

Sep 15, 2014connecting my mac book pro/ windows laptop to My main computer and everything on it. I've never had 2 computers in the same house before. I use my Windows 8.1 for everything, but there are times when I'm somewhere else in the house where I'd like to access anything/everything on it. I have Wifi AC through a dlink router. I also have wired ethernet through the house. Thats not the problem, just how to connect the main computer to every other computer in the house either wifi or wired. If I'm out in the garage and I want to see my desktop computer on my mac book pro how can I do it. Also... I installed splashtop on each computer, but haven't figured it out if its the right software. I guess I need the right words to make the questions I have ask understandable for everyone.
Simply put I want to be able to access my Mac book pro and my Android S3 phone to be able to access everything on my desktop computer.

Aug 28, 2013I play games on my computer and i have Windows 8 which came with the computer and it works fine. But when I play games online it will work for a while then it will drop me out of the game. And when i look at the bottom of taskbar it has the little disconnected symbol.
I am using the computer built in "802.11n Wireless LAN Card". After a few seconds it will reconnect.

Now my issue is how do I disable the 30 sec wait time for approval by currently logged in user when I try to establish a Remote Desktop connection?
I have tried to change the settings in gpedit allowing admin access with out users permission but it doesn't seem to work in widows 8.

Apr 21, 2014My old desktop (upstairs) and my laptop are both running Windows 7. I can very easily use remote desktop connection from my laptop to the upstairs computer. My new desktop (downstairs) runs Windows 8.1. I use a local login, not the Microsoft login. My user name and password are the same on all three computers, and all three are on the same home network.
When I launch remote desktop connection from the Windows 8 machine, and enter the name of the Windows 7 machine, along with my User name and password (same on all three computers), the Windows 7 screen (from the upstairs machine) appears along with "The user name or password is incorrect".

Sep 15, 2014I have been trying to remote into my Windows 8.1 desktop from outside my home network using the RDC program for Apple.
The basic setup from within the home network works fine. I turned on the port forwarding and DNS stuff on my ASUS router and that worked fine from within my homework network. When I go outside my home network, it get to the certificate message and then throws a tsl1_alert_internal_error and dies.

But it still did not work, the internet is connect through a router (not wireless) and the other desktop PC still connects to the internet fine.

Jul 7, 2014For some reason my windows 8 Hp will not connect to my home wifi network. Has had no problem connecting in the past but yesterday I unplugged my router to move it to another part of my house and ever since then it can't connect. My cell phone and other laptop connect to the internet no problem.
On my Hp it will show a list of wifi networks and my home network is on the list, however, when I try to connect to it and then troubleshoot the problem it says I can't connect to the network because it is hidden. I don't see how thats possible since the network name shows up on the list of nearby wifi networks.
What I've done but hasn't worked:
Reset my router and laptop multiple times.
Tried to manually connect to network.
Forgot the network on my laptop and tried to reconnect.
I don't understand how one day it can connect to the wifi fine and then I unplug it and all of a sudden it can't connect but my other devices can.
