Network / Sharing :: Network Desktop Shortcut Does Not Update?
May 19, 2014
Strange behavior on my Win 8.1 desktop with a shortcut to Control PanelNetwork ConnectionsEthernet Network. After a system startup, (as administrator) the shortcut can "Disable" the network connection by right clicking the shortcut and selecting "Disable". Later, when the shortcut is right clicked again, the context menu still says "Disable". I would call this a failure to update the shortcut, but what is actually happening.
In order to get the shortcut to "update" itself, I have only to open the Control PanelNetwork Connections window. Magically, the shortcut will then reflect the true state of the network when right clicking the shortcut on the desktop.
what is necessary to keep the shortcut updated?

I'm trying to create a shortcut to "Control PanelNetwork and InternetNetwork Connections". I am not able to. Is there something about going to this folder that is forbidden?" If I have inserted the incorrect path please give me the correct answer.
I am preparing a lesson and a short cut to the adapters will make it easier.

My old computer was running Win 8.1. The new Computer came with 8. I only have one monitor so I was using Remote Desktop to access the old computer and transfer things over. At some point I decided to upgrade the new one to 8.1. Now they're both on 8.1 That's the only thing that changed, but Remote Desktop stopped connecting. I can access folders and such across the network. I can log into the old one with Team Viewer but Remote Desktop will not connect. It keeps saying the other computer is offline or does not allow remote connections (it does, I checked multiple times) is there something that changed in 8.1 that would stop Remote Desktop from working?
Out of curiosity I tried using Remote Desktop from my laptop and it connected to the old computer fine. So it must be something on the new one.
Edit: I've now also tried connecting from the new PC to the laptop with RD and it gave me the same error about the laptop being offline or something
Edit 2: Now I tried it again so I could get a screenshot of the error message and it worked fine.

Been having trouble this morning with my network drive in my Home Server. It normally connects fine at startup and it all of a sudden wont work.
I have isolated it to my Desktop as i can connect off of my Laptop fine.
The name of my server is Homeserver(192.168.1.77) and I have shared a folder inside the drive rather than the drive its self. This image shows how I'm trying to connect to the folder. And this is the error I'm getting
I have tried:
Resetting ip / dns flushing etc.
sfc /scannow (Says everything is fine.)
Windows 8.1: files in folders on network drive not visible
W2K3 Server can access W8 W8 computer cant see W2K server
Also tried disabling norton on my desktop but still wont work

I reset the IE options and now the desktop IE works but won't download the google search again,(had it installed on this pc before this incident) and lost all printers that were installed and cannot reinstall because spooler service is not running, I tried starting it and it says not enough resources available.

Being impossible to get my dial-up shortcut from the desktop onto the taskbar of my new Windows 8 laptop, I followed the tutorial to add Quick Launch toolbar to the taskbar, and successfully moved the shortcut tothere.
With Vista, XP etc, one click on Quick Launch toolbar shortcut icon would open this "Connect TPG" window shown below. You then just clicked <Dial> button to connect directly to the ISP.
(Note: TPG is the name of the ISP)
However, with my Windows 8, three mouse operations all over the screen are required to arrive at this window:
1. You click the Quick Launch shortcut icon and the Charms sidebar opens.
2. Then you have to select the ISP under the Connections header, which causes a <Connect> button to pop up.
3. Which when clicked finally brings you to the above "Connect TPG" window.
how to open this window directly from the Quick Launch toolbar or how to pin a shortcut to the taskbar to achieve the same outcome?
NB, pinning "Network Connections" shortcut to taskbar is not the answer, as you still then required to the go through the same 3 operations mentioned above.
For further info, the properties window of the dial-up shortcut is shown below.
The target string is: {BA126AD7-2166-11D1-B1D0-00805FC1270E}

I'm a Windows 8. I'm trying to RDP from my new Windows 8 laptop to an XP desktop, both of which are on my home network. When I try, I get the below error...
Remote Desktop can't connect to the remote computer for one of these reasons:
1) Remote access to the server is not enabled
2) The remote computer is turned off
3) The remote computer is not available on the network
As best as I can tell, none of the conditions above is true. Here is what I have looked at so far...
- On the XP machine, in System settings / Remote, "Allow users to connect to this system" is Checked. I have successfully RDP'd to this machine in the past, but this is the first time I've tried from the Windows 8 machine.
- From the Windows 8 machine, I can ping the XP machine, and I can access a shared drive on the XP machine. In fact, I've been moving files between the XP machine and the Windows 8 machine, in both directions, all day.
- Just to eliminate another potential issue, I have set the username and password on the Windows 8 machine to match that on the XP machine.
Incidentally, XP machine is running XP Pro, 2002, SP3.

Is there a way to setup network profiles or something so that when I bring my Surface Pro to work and connect to the wireless network there it will use the static ip address I have but when I disconnect and then connect to my home wifi it will go back to DHCP? On my MacBook Pro I can go into the network settings and change the location profile I have setup for networks but I don't see anything like this for Windows 8.

I know svchost.exe is a collection of services, but what I want to know is how I can figure out what specifally is using up all my bandwidth.
I did make sure to disable live tile updating. Doesn't happen if i boot into safe mode.

I'm going to throw my hat into the ring of people with wi-fi issues following an update to 8.1. on a brand new Alienware 17.
After the update to 8.1 last night, wi-fi will connect and then drop out after I start transferring data (browsing)
The only remedy is to either restart, or "forget" the connection and re-establish. At which point it will again only work for several minutes, or until I start "using" it.
Wireless adapter is a Broadcom BCM4352 Wireless adapter.

I tried to remove it now but the network still won't connect. My network driver is the Killer network. I also tried to restore but apparently my PC never made an automatic save. Now what do I do?

Potential client running Windows 8.0 (trying to avoid 8.1) Pavilion g6
Potential host running Win7 pro (fully updated) and the same desktop is the host of the wifi I'm using.
So far working:
-Remote desktop from Windows 8 into win7 (wireless).
-Folder sharing both ways (no homegroup, but direct sharing) (wireless).
Allthough, while uploading from Win7 into Windows 8 it occassionally looses connection, failing upload. However downloading same files from Windows 8 using same network works flawless. Also again using win7 sometimes doesn't find folders until using premade shortcuts. Maybe relevant, or not.
Problem: While trying to use Remote Desktop from Win7 desktop into Windows 8 Pavilion laptop I get that "...one of these reasons" error.
This while rightclicking on the Windows 8 pc in the win7 view of the network (choosing remote desktop option), so I know that the name is spelled right, it's in the network!!!
So far tried: Setting up Windows 8 to receive remote desktop as given here in these forums, allthough while on
SystemProperties-->Remote-->Advanced I do NOT get the remote desktop menu view, only Remote Assistant settings with hour setup and such.
Tried to connect:
-Both firewalls down, also client Avast down.
-From the network with right mouse click.
-Manually inputting the computer name into Remote Desktop
These PC's are not on the same WIFI, only same network. I Don't know how to get the network host into it's own wifi network. For example, I can't get my iPhone to connect wireless into iTunes because they are not connected into the same wifi, only Windows 8 is "connected" in the wifi, win7 is "merely" sending it, at least that's how I've understood the problem why I must upload/download stuff with manual wire connection with my phone.

I recently bought Dell Inspiron with i5 4th generation and preloaded Win 8 on it.
I upgraded it to Win 8.1. Am trying to login to my works station through IE11. am able to successfully login to web vpn website and when i try to give my IP and hit submit,
Java tries to load for a brief moment and am getting a message.
Error: click here for more details in a split window.
However am able to launch remote desktop using IE8 from my XP box. IE11 does not support.
1) make remote desktop work on IE11 or
2) in installing IE8 on Win 8.1
Stuff tried so for, for making it work:
-uninstalled IE11 and tried installing IE8 (failed) IE9 (it says already installed though it is not)
-tried developer tool and changed browser mode to IE8 ( internet stopped working- unable to load any page from internet.)

I want to be able to remote control my moms PC. Both our PC's are Windows 8 pro. I used a pro android app called jump remote desktop from my android tablet which allowed me to control my moms PC but it logged her out of her PC so she got a blank display while I controlled it. If I use the integrated Windows 8 pro remote desktop would my mom also be logged out and get a blank screen? How about the chrome web browser remote desktop extension? Am I right this is the only way that I can control her PC while she can still see what I'm doing. Does chrome extension log her out of windows? Another problem with having her log out of windows is then the next time she turns on her PC she will be asked for windows password even though we have it setup to start windows without asking for sign in info. Is chrome extension best solution for me? Easy to setup?

This morning I installed an optional update from Windows Update. It was Ralink Technology WLAN 802.11 wireless LAN card.
Since then, when I try to print to my wireless network printer, the network would disconnect then come back on after a while. The update shows up in Update History as successfully installed but not in the installed updates. System restore is of no support here. The network configuration page shows normal. The web does not appear to be affected. I made a new network connection for the printer but it did not work.
Is there a way to reverse this update or should I uninstall the 802.11 LAN card and let windows re-install anew.
The printer is a HP Officejet Pro 8600e

I am running windows 8 pro, I have the "alow remote access" checked as I should and I have read plenty of threads on how to do it. Now, when I am at work, I want to remote into my home desktop. My work pc is win 7 pro. When I enter my home ip it gives the "cannot connect" either the computer is this or that etc.
I followed the guide but to no avail. AS long as my home pc is set to accept remote connections, why am I having this issue.?

Want my Windows 8.1 computer to join my HomeGroup which currently consists of my Win 7 desktop and Win 7 laptop.
In Network and Sharing Center it sees the HomeGroup and says "Available to Join". I try to join by inputting the password and after a minute it says "Windows no longer detects a homegroup on this network...."
Why is this happening? What to do? What is the point of having multiple computers if you can't join them.
I also see that I can't even access the other computer through network. It shows both computers yet when I click on one it says its not accessible, I don't have permissions, etc. I have done nothing to change anything. Why can't I see other computers on my own network? On my two Win 7 computers it was as simple as could be. Why is this Win 8.1 giving me trouble?

I had a PC running Windows 7 Pro with SP1, in a remote location, that I would wake up using WOL and then operate using Remote Desktop. At the conclusion of the session I would shut down the pc until I needed it again. I upgraded that PC and now find that WOL using Windows 8.1 will only work if the PC is in the Hibernate mode. That's fine but I can't find a way to put it in Hibernate using Remote Desktop. While using Remote Desktop my choices are limited to Disconnect and Sign out. There is no command line command to put the Windows 8.1 pc in hibernate mode.
How I can put the remote Windows 8.1 pc into hibernate at the end of a remote desktop session so I can restart it with WOL when needed again?

I am trying to write a DVD over RDP but my writer is not recognised. After searching the internet, I found out that Windows disallows this as a security precaution. I did find a fix for Windows 7, which is to go into GPedit.msc and change the setting for 'All Removable Storage: Allow direct access in remote sessions' to enabled. However, this setting is not there in Windows 8. Has it been removed for Windows 8 and if so is there another fix.

I assume port 3389 is okay as I can remote connect with my win7/xp/win 8 pro laptop to many other PC's over the internet. I can connect to the said PC over the local lan using the name convention but not over internet address 110.143.xxx.x
Never thought it would be this hard after so easily using xp and win 7. otherwise win 8 pro is out the door!

I have tried to find older topics and tutorials on this without success. This is new to me so hopefully there's something very simple to address the issue.
I have 3 computers. 1 x Win 8 Pro and 2 x Win 8 Standard.
I know only the Win 8 Pro machine can be a Remote Desktop host.
In System Properties I have checked the box to "allow Remote Assistance to this computer" (I don't know detail, but I am aware this is something different to Remote Desktop).
Also in System Properties, I have selected to "Allow remote connections to this computer". I have also tried to check the sub-section of that "Allow connections only from computers running Remote Desktop with Network Level Authentication (recommended)".
All computers are set up at home, connected to a regular home router.
When I try to connect to the host machine I get an error (I don't have details of that right now, but its some generic "no connection" error).
