Computer Freezes On Restart?
Jan 26, 2014
So this is a problem I've had with my PC for a long time now, and just never got around to finding a solution. Half the time when I attempt to restart my computer the computer just freezes at the restart screen. So installing software generally results in a crash, I feel as though since my computer simply crashes during half the windows updates that issues are going to begin to stack up.

I just recently installed a new anti-virus software (Kaskersky Anti-Virus 2013) and it runs perfectly (or so I thought).
The only problem that was plaguing my computer was after I restarted it (via the Sidebar and pressing the power icon and clicking restart) and it would "hang" at the restart screen for about 30 seconds.
The pixel icon next to the word "Restarting" would freeze mid spin (I could still move my mouse), but then it would continue to function normally.
So my question is simply: Is this an issue to take action against or is the Anti-Virus software preventing a proper restart?
NOTE: When I start a normal "Shutdown" this problem is absent and the computer shuts down in about 6 seconds.

Lately, I have been experiencing freezes, I presume while browsing with Google Chrome. They happen randomly and when my computer freezes, I can still click on icons, close/open tabs on Chrome and generally move my mouse. The only issue is that my computer won't respond to any action performed. There is no blue screen associate, there are no "Program not responding" issues, just a freeze that lasts around 10-20 seconds.

I recently upgraded both my motherboard to an Asus M5a99FX PRO R2.0 and my CPU to an AMD FX 8350 and I've been experiencing some complete freezes playing games like Battlefield 4, Shadow Warrior and Skyrim. In my old build (with a Gigabyte 880GM-USB3L and a Phenom II x4 955BE) the same games would perform okay and I never really experienced any crashes or freezes.
The problem now is that at what are apparently random intervals no longer than 15 minutes during gaming my cpmputer will completely freeze, audio stops, I cannot open the task manager and I even tried toggling Caps Lock and the LED on my keyboard wouldn't toggle. I would leave it stuck there for a couple of minute but nothing would happen, forcing me to hard reset the system.
I can use the computer for regular browsing and video streaming (I think I can alsop play some older games without freezing) without freezes too, which is kind of odd.
My PC specs would be:
OS: Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bitMobo: Asus M5A99FX PRO R2.0CPU: AMD FX-8350 (not overclocked)GPU: Nvidia GTX 660Ti GC 3GB (not overclocked either)Memory: 2 modules of some 4GB Kingston KVR1333D3N9/4G
PSU: Thermaltake TR2 RX 650W
HDD: Seagate ST2000DM001 (2TB)
So far what I've done to try to find a solution to the freezing is rolling back video drivers, then installing the most recent ones again, upgrading to the most recent version of the BIOS for my mobo and my chipset drivers, I've checked the connections on the mobo to make sure everything is installed fine, I've reseated the RAM and the GPU, I've run 2 cycles of memtest86+ to find no errors, I've also run Furmark's GPU burner and CPU burner (both for about 20 minutes) and I haven't crashed on them. My temperatures also don't get too excessive (CPU does't go over 43C and my GPU doesn't go over 64C). I also removed the Realtek Audio drivers and the freezing persisted.

After two refresh and one clean install of Windows 8 within a two-week period, my computer freezes while I'm running CCleaner. It always stops at the same file:
CUserAppDataLocalTemp\_ME149482PyWinTypes26.dll
First few minutes, I can still use my computer, but after that, I cannot print, cannot open Task Manager, cannot shut down the computer. After numerous attempts, I'm able to close CCleaner, but my computer remains frozen.

A couple of weeks ago my old PSU blew up. It did kind of like a explosion sound and some flashing, very impressive. I inspected the motherboard and I could not find any damage whatsoever. Only the PSU seemed affected.
After that I bought a new PSU (Tacens MP700 - 700W), an aftermarket CPU fan (Cooler Master Hyper TX3 EVO) and some extra chasis fan to improve air flow and lower the temperature. I plugged everything in, and system started with no apparent issues.
However since a few days ago sometimes my PC restarts without saying anything, some other time it just freezes (very annoying) and some other times it gives me a BSOD with the errors CLOCK_WATCHDOG_TIMEOUT. The frequency of these failures:
- Normal use like browsing, email, programming --> not very often
- Playing game like iRacing --> sometimes it freezes
- Playing game like PES2014 --> it always freezes, sometimes during the first match, sometimes after a 2-3 of them
After googling it appears is a hardware problem so I wonder if the damn PSU damaged some of my other components. The thing is the original PSU was intended to be for a quiet HTPC but I started to work from home and suddenly became a work station. I should have improved the PSU among with the other components (CPU, memory, etc.) but I did not think it was necessary. Bad decission I guess.
I've monitored temperature and it does not seem to be the issue as using a benchmark software at 100% CPU during 30 minutes temperature does not go over 65C on the CPU (I live in Spain where ambient temperature is around 30) and motherboard never pass 68-70. Right now while browsing temp is 35 for the CPU, 45 for the mobo and graphic, 30 for HDD. Pretty normal I think.
I have also upgraded from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 hoping it was a driver issue but not success either.
Find attached the SF report. Added new crash info:

Every morning, when I turn on my Windows 8 computer, it freezes as soon as the Windows 8 logo starts loading. Instead of panicking, I always push the "reset" button (not the power button) on ZT, and my computer re-starts without any problems. It happens EVERY MORNING. I don't want to refresh, reset, etc...

After upgrading a Dell XPS One using both Intel HD 4000 and nVidia 640M graphics, the computer takes 5 minutes to restart. The restart screen immediately shows up after hitting the restart button. Then the screen goes black for 5 minutes. Afterwards the Dell logo shows up and everything starts fine from there. I don't understand why the monitor stays black for 5 minutes before restarting.

My computer started freezing while downloading large files in uTorrent, About 10 minutes after starting uTorrent the PC starts to be really really slow and 1 minute after it freezes, only restarted/shutdown solve the problem, I've been using uTorrent for years and never had this problem, I mean it happens when I download a 15GB movie, but two months ago I downloaded a 170GB TV series and no problems were with that.
So I thought maybe its a problem in the HDD (not in the space, I have aprox. 150GB free in C and 220GB in D), I don't really know what to do.

Win 8x64. I play music a lot with foobar2000 - mp3 files, CDs - most often but not always using its ASIO/JPlay device and driver; i.e., I also use JPlay (service + process + settings - JPLAY - hi-end audio player for Windows). Lately, I've had some computer freezing problems and that's why I write. For example, before leaving for the weekend, I played music for 13 hours, no problem. Returning home yesterday, starting the computer and then the music in exactly the same fashion, within minutes I started getting a string of computer freezes, all occurring when music was playing.
On a previous occasion, I had run a few malware scans that turned up nothing, so I tried to isolate the problem by removing pieces step by step, starting with getting JPlay out of the way, so it was foobar alone, but none worked (my working hunch has been that the problem is foobar itself or the ASIO/JPlay combo getting corrupted somehow). Finally, I uninstalled and reinstalled foobar again and it played ok, although I didn't let it go for long enough to be sure. Then I added JPlay and things seemed ok for awhile, then came back after 90 minutes to find a freeze.
Looking at Admin Events, I notice the following happening a lot, at startup and maybe also related to when the crashes occur:
- The Open Procedure for service "WmiApRpl" in DLL "C:Windowssystem32wbemwmiaprpl.dll" failed. (1008)
- Windows cannot load the extensible counter DLL rdyboost (1023)
- The Open Procedure for service "MSDTC" in DLL "C:Windowssystem32msdtcuiu.DLL" failed. (1008)
- The Open Procedure for service "Lsa" in DLL "C:WindowsSystem32Secur32.dll" failed. (1008)
- The Open Procedure for service "ESENT" in DLL "C:Windowssystem32esentprf.dll" failed. (1008)
- The Open Procedure for service "BITS" in DLL "C:WindowsSystem32itsperf.dll" failed. (1008)
I ran sfc /scannow as admin and it apparently fixed some things and said it couldn't fix others. See the screenshot below, as well as the CBS log file.
I'd like to figure out if Windows has become corrupted or is producing the problem. There's also extreme hostility over at foobar re use of other players, specifically JPlay.)

Lately, while browsing, the computer start to freeze in this way:
First the browser (any browser) gets stuck loading pages but it is responsive (I can change tabs, scroll, select text etc)
The taskbar stops working at all and the mouse cursor changes to spinning circle when I hover on it.
The desktop screen seems to work at first, but it freezes too with the spinning circle if I open anything or right click.
CTRL ALT DEL, ALT TAB and start screen shortcuts won't work.
I have to reset because I can't reach shutdown or reboot options. Then the computer returns to normal.
Checked hard disk, and sfc /scannow without any errors. No errors in Event viewer.

I have a laptop with windows 8, and everytime (or almost everytime, about 4/5 of the times) when I start/restart it, it says that it's configuring windows, please do not shut down your computer. This takes about 20 minutes each time and is really annoying.
Also, I'm not sure this happens all the time, but the first time this happend I just sat by my computer and waited. There I saw that first it was configuring, then when that got to 100%, it said "Configuration failed", then it said "Restarting" and started all over again, but the 2nd time it finished successfully and the computer started.
Since then, I haven't bothered sitting by my laptop and waiting for it while it updates, so I go do something else. So I don't know if that "Configuration failed" thing happens everytime or only that time.

When my computer restarts, it seems to never end. I once waited 20 minutes for it to restart but it was still at the same screen. Now whenever it goes into restart, I just hold my power button until it shuts down. I don't think it's good for my laptop so I want to figure out a way to have a fast restart. I got this laptop 3 weeks ago and it always had this problem. My old laptop restarts in under 2 minutes.

I've had my windows 8 computer since December and for the past month or so it will not restart or shut down unless I do a hard shut down with the power button. When hitting restart it starts to shut down, then comes up with "restarting" screen and just stays there, never moves from there. On shut down it just freezes after closing down windows. It can't be good always shutting down via the power button. I haven't added any new programs at all so not sure why this started happening.

I have solved this issue by not leaving my laptop plugged into my television through HDMI while it restarts to install updates. If you run into this issue, make sure you try leaving all ports open on your computer.
A few weeks ago my PC ran into a Blue screen of death error. I'm not sure why or exactly when it happened, but I think it may have led to the issues I have now. About 3 weeks ago (I think) I was playing a game and the forced restart to install updates thing popped up. It said I had 15 minutes before my system would restart and install updates. I was a bit cranky at the time, so I got mad and decided to look up on the internet how to disable forced restarts for windows 8. I came across a thread on a site much like this that explained how to open your system registry and delete the forced restart file or something similar.
I opened my registry and couldn't find it, so I ended up not deleting anything, but I did keep my registry open on accident and my computer restarted while it was open. It crashed during the update install and gave me a BSOD error. I restarted my computer and it began installing updates yet again. It got to 30% and then went black. A few seconds later, the Asus logo popped up with the loading circle below it. It said attempting to repair or something similar to that. It eventually failed to repair, so it asked if I would like to proceed with a system restore. Seeing no other options, I clicked yes. The screen went black again and the Asus logo showed up with the loading circle below it. It failed to system restore and took me to a blue screen that isn't the BSOD. It said there were other options like refreshing my system, and it assured me that I would not lose my files (but it said nothing about apps).
I decided to do that over the manufacturer restore. It worked, but I lost all of my apps that I had installed. After redownloading and installing all the apps, I thought it would be over. About a week later another windows update popped up. I thought it would work fine this time, so I let it go. The same thing happened, and I ended up having to system refresh again. This happens every time my computer restarts, and it is very aggravating. I'm not sure what to do about it, although I haven't tried to manufacturer restore yet.
TL/DR; My computer has to system refresh every time it restarts, causing me to lose all of my apps and have to reinstall them each time. I think it has something to do with my computer restarting to install updates while my system registry was open.
I wasn't sure what to provide for specs, so I'll just add in the usual Ram and stuff:
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4500U CPU @ 1.80GHz 2.40 GHz
Installed memory (RAM): 8.00GB (7.89 GB usable)
System type: 64-bit Operating System, x64-based processor
Pen and Touch: Full Windows Touch Support with 10 Touch Points
I added the SF_19-11-2013.rar file to the post because I just saw the requirements >.>

I purchased a new computer in the last few days, pre-installed Windows 8. I was having the odd error message where Chrome would stop working and reload. Or sometimes an error message saying my computer would restart. They are different messages:
Memory Management
IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
Special Pool Detected Memory Corrupt
I downloaded all updates for Windows 8, then updated to 8.1 and downloaded all but one update available (Bing Desktop). I am still getting these BSOD. Sometimes in Chrome, sometimes in Steam, and sometimes randomly
I've run the Memory diagnostic tool in Windows, and it found no errors. I've attached the SF Diagnostics folder which was created.

Recently I decided to go ahead and update to the Windows 8.1 version of the Realtek HD Audio Driver. I procrastinated because it told me I'd have to uninstall the original audio driver and I knew it would take a while to do everything needed. It didn't work that after uninstalling the original audio driver, then restarting like Windows told me to do, I kept getting error messages that forced my computer to restart until eventually my computer let me log in and install the updated audio driver.
However, with the updated version of this driver I had the same issue I got with the original one only much much worse. The original Realtek HD Audio Driver that I had on my computer made music and videos sound absolutely awful when headphones were plugged in. I found out that this is because the driver automatically puts on so-called "enhancements" whenever headphones are plugged in. This was a very simple fix, simply go to "Sound", then under "Playback" you click on "Speakers", then go to "Enhancements" and check the box labeled "Disable all sound effects." Then sound through headphones would return to normal.
Well, with the Window 8.1 version of this audio driver, I can do the same thing, but it never stays that way. Every time I plug in my headphones, it resets back to having enhancements. The strange thing though is that it says the enhancements are disabled but when I reactivate the enhancements(No difference in sound quality) then deactivate it again, suddenly the sound through my headphones is back to normal.
Did the audio driver not install properly? Is there something I can do to permanently disable the audio enhancements?

Sometimes when I insert a blank DVD into my optical drive, Windows Explorer does not show that the disc is present in the drive. If I then double-click on the icon for the optical drive, Windows Explorer hangs. When it restarts, all I get is a completely blank desktop and a taskbar that has no icons on it. If I try and shut the computer down via Ctrl/Alt/Del and using the shutdown option there, it just stays on the shutting down screen forever and all I can do is hit the reset button. No errors are logged in Event Viewer, so I am having a hard time diagnosing the cause.
This happens maybe 50% of the time when I insert a blank disc. The other 50% of the time it works fine.
I have all the latest drivers/Windows Updates installed. I have tried 2 different burners and it happens with both of them. Do you think this could possibly be motherboard related? I bought a new board a couple of weeks ago and did a completely fresh install of Windows 8 and it's been happening since then.

Been experiencing random system freezes from time to time. One suggestion was the internal timer and was "fixed" with a simple copy paste line in the Command Prompt in Admin level. Another was a graphics card update, did that. Another talked about the browser (I use Firefox pretty much exclusively) but what was talked about didn't really pertain to me so didn't bother with that. I'm at work right now so can't post the link to the site but I did have another freeze this AM after all the fixes I tried out.
I have 3 external drives, I run an NVIDIA graphics card. It's a pretty good system with an i7 processor and 32 gigs of DDR3 RAM. Computer, when forced reset button is pushed, boots up just fine. No feedback from the system itself about drives or anything else.
