Get Windows 7 To Display The Size Of Each Folder?

Sep 27, 2011

I am currently attempting to have folder sizes shown in lists. I have 'display file size info' checked in Folder Tips check box, to no avail. How can I get Win 7 to display the size of each folder, as it does with file sizes?

Why No Folder Size In Windows 7

Dec 6, 2009

Yes, this is an old issue but I wanted to summarize a few points, and open it for further discussion:

(1) Optionally displaying size of all folders has been a top-requested feature for years

(2) Windows 7 Explorer does not have this, although hovering the mouse pointer over the folder will show individual folder size.

(3) The Mac Finder displays folder size, although it's not enabled by default.

(4) In XP, Windows add-on tools like FolderSize and TreeSize Pro would add a column to Windows Explorer showing folder size. Unfortunately the underlying API IColumnProvider was removed starting with Vista, so these tools don't work in either Vista or Windows 7.

There are various arguments why Explorer can't display folder size, such as it would burden a network drive, it would be too slow, wouldn't handle junctions correctly, etc.

These arguments break down because it has already been done: the feature has already been implemented on both Mac and Windows 3rd party tools. We can see ourselves how well or poorly it works. In general it works pretty well on local drives on contemporary hardware.

Re network drives, it's easy to programmatically discriminate between network and local drives. One solution is only enable folder sizes for local drives. As on the Mac, another solution is don't enable it by default. Many users won't turn it on, so this lessens the impact.

There are more sophisticated future solutions possible to optimize folder size query of a network server. E.g, the server maintains folder size info and reports it to the client, but these aren't needed as a 1st step. The lack of these don't preclude folder size working on local drives today. Proof of this is Mac and 3rd party XP tools work fine on local drives right now.

With this in mind and considering Microsoft spent 6 billion dollars on Vista and several billion more on Windows 7, why wasn't folder size a basic feature of the Windows 7 explorer?

Reducing The Windows 7 Folder Size?

Nov 14, 2012

I just built a new PC with a 120GB SSD and installed Windows 7 Ultimate. The Windows folder size on this machine is about 22.5GB, which seems kind of large to me. I have Windows 7 Pro on a laptop and the Windows folder size is around 12GB. Is there some things I can safely remove from the Ultimate install to free up some room. I'm already using about 2/3 of my new SSD and I need to load a few more applications.

Reducing Windows 7 Folder Size?

Oct 26, 2011

My Windows folder is currently 16.8GB. This wouldn't normally bother me, but I do have an 80GB SSD.

Of course, I wouldn't ever edit anything in this folder because I don't want to screw anything up...but is there anything I can do? I just have a feeling that the folder is full of old files or backups that I no longer need.

but are the main components of my system:

Intel 2500k CPU
8GB Corsair Vengeance RAM
XFX Radeon HD6950
Gigabyte P67A UD3 B3 Motherboard

Motherboard BIOS Shrunk (display Size)

Nov 14, 2011

About a month ago, one day when I turned my computer on, the BIOS display side had shrunk, leaving a 1 inch black border around the edge of the screen. This went away when I turned the computer on the following day, but has now come back. It doesn't seem to have any other adverse effects, but it bugs me. Can anyone explain why this might be and what I could do to make my BIOS full screen again?

Automatically Change Font Size When Connected To Bigger Display?

Aug 24, 2010

I have a netbook with a 10.1 inch screen, and a 22inch LCD display panel. When I connect my netbook to the display, the words seem too small at 1920x1080 resolution. If I set the font size to 125% or 150%, then it would be too big once i unplug my external LCD and use the netbook's 10.1 screen. Setting the 22 LCD to a lower resolution makes the text look very blurred, so that's not an option.

Is there anyway/script/program to automatically change the font size when I connect/disconnect the LCD screen?

Folder File Size Housekeeping

Nov 18, 2012

As im having a clearout and tidying up storage folders prior to new back ups - is there a way in Win Explorer or a third party utility to see total size of a folder so when i look at a list of HDD contents i can see which is using up most disk space? each folder may have sub folders as well as files, but apart from right click to Properties i would like a quick quick way of viewing folder size. or even sorting by size rather than folder name. The Size column after Date Modified and then Type isnt wont show a total size. Surely theres a way of Windows or a utility that can show the total size of a folder??I can then quickly go to a folder which has a large content and see if i can delete some of its contents. Folders like "Photos" is obviously going to be large, but others arent! Also as i still get confused about the way WIN Backup works im seriously considering Acronis so as to have incremental backups.

Windows Won't Display Folder Contents

Dec 8, 2011

I just got a new PC with Windows 7 installed and have run into this issue twice, both times with a particular folder - let's call it "UsefulDocuments2" (the actual folder name DOES have a 2 at the end, but there is no folder called "UsefulDocuments").

Sometimes, when I try to view the folder contents using Explorer or through Windows Live Mail (in an attempt to include a file in the folder as an attachment), I can't view the contents of the folder. When I access the folder, it has the proper path listed in the address bar of the window and displays the number of items (171) in the lower left corner. However, the status bar just says "Searching for items..." except I can occasionally see it flicker to say "171 items."

While it is "Searching for items..." (which is 99.9% of the time), it doesn't display any of the contents of the folder. The scrollbar on the side of the window constantly flickers - it's recognizing that there are 171 items in the folder and that the scrollbar is necessary, but then keeps re-searching the folder contents, I guess.

Weirdly, if I change the folder name to, say, "UsefulDocuments" it works fine (at least right now). If I then change it back to "UsefulDocuments2" it reverts to its old behavior. Also, if I open a file in it in Word (2010), I can view and access the contents of the folder without any problem at all.

Obviously, I can just change the folder name, but don't really want to for organizational reasons, and also am just curious as to what's going on and how to fix it should it happen to other folders, etc.

Folder Size Not Displayed When Viewing In The Details Mode?

Nov 5, 2011

There's something about Windows that has always puzzled me. Let's say you have a directory in which there are some additional directories (folders) and some standalone files. When in that directory you select details for your viewing mode. Right click on a standalone file, select properties and you'll see the file size. Do the same for a folder and you'll see the folder size. This tells you that the information about the size of the file or folder is present. Yet when you select view details, the size of the standalone files is displayed but the size of the folders is not displayed. The only reason I can imagine Microsoft does this is because they make a bunch of money when people like me get so annoyed with this that we buy software such as folder size (which I use). But I didn't pay one dime for the folder size software, as I got it free from a third party vendor. So the reason can't be because they make a bunch of money selling the folder size software.

System Image Backup Folder Size Problem

Nov 14, 2009

I have a question about System Image Backups. (Win 7 Ultimate, 64-bit).

I have setup System Image Backups to my external 1TB eSATA drive.

I have chosen to allow Windows to manage the space used for backup history, Windows says it will use up to 279GB (which is fine).

The properties on the actual "Windows Image Backup" folder on the external drive shows the size as 32.6GB. However The Windows backup menu "Manage Windows Backup disk space" shows "System Image: 68.90 GB."

Primary Question:

Is Windows Backup storing my system images somewhere else in addition to this folder, or is the menu just plain wrong?

Additional Question: Is the Windows Backup utility capable of doing differential backups for the system image, or is each backup a full backup? The GUI menus are not giving me enough information. Based on what I see, it looks like System Image backups are always full, and data files are incremental or differential.

Can't View Folder Size On Backup Drive With Explorer

Nov 19, 2009

When I backup to an external USB drive, Explorer shows the 2 folders created (WindowsImageBackup and MYNAME-PC) as having 0 bytes, 0 files and 0 folders when right clicking those folders and looking at Properties.

Yet, if I right click the drive icon, Properties shows the drive with 15GB of used space.

Is this normal? I'm not using third party software for the backup.

Change Size Of Folder Icons And Text In Outlook 2007

May 23, 2010

Okay, so a friend of my dad told him that he used to see the folder icons and labels in the left pane of Outlook 2007 in a bigger font/size before switching to a new computer with Windows 7. Obviously, we all know that upgrading Windows won't change font sizes that are coded into independent programs, so I'm thinking that maybe his old computer was running at a lower resolution. Anywho, my dad's friend asked my dad to ask me this question, and since I don't use Office 2007 anymore, I need to ask you: is there a way to change the size of the folder icons and labels in the left pane of Outlook 2007, without changing the size of anything else?

13GB Mp3 Folder Won't Display Music Says Empty

Dec 16, 2011

I got one of those malware programs through searching for pics of Air Jordans on google. All of a sudden, something was installing itself on my computer and then telling me my hard drive had crashed, and now I needed to buy their software to fix it. I cut off the computer and rebooted, trying to get into safe-mode to do a restore. Couldn't get into safe mode, windows would just load, so I cut it off and then the computer said Windows didn't load, so I chose to repair. Note, it didn't load because I cut it off manually.

The thing is, the mp3s are still there. Opening Winamp's start menu, it shows recently played songs, and when I click on one, it plays. So I went to my folder (C:/mp3s) and right clicked on it, and chose "enqueue in winamp" and all the songs loaded into winamp, even though the folder continues to show that it's empty. It's worth noting that when I right-click on the mp3 folder and choose properties, it shows that the folder is over 13 gigs and has over 2900 songs. I just can't directly access them, but I can play them in winamp

Explorer Doesn't Display Content Of One Folder

Jan 7, 2013

I can't open a specific folder to display the content with Explorer.I'm running Windows 7 7601.win7sp1_gdr.120830-0333 Home Premium. The folder is on a secondary HDD where I also have the system folders Libraries and Download. All the system and program files are on my primary SSD C: drive. What doesn't work:With my regular account, on that specific folder, I can't display the content via Explorer. I can't either get it when I try to open it from inside applications such as Notepad++, PotPlayer, Media Player Classic, VirtualDub. What works:If I enter the name of a file in the File name field of the Open command of the application, the file will open normally. When I point to that folder with the Windows command line console, and use the DIR command, it will display the complete list of files. Finally, when I look at the folder from the Admin account or from a Guest account, Explorer will display the content.instantaneously.

Things I did:I have checked Show hidden files in Folder Options.I did a Check Disk, which didn't find any error.I also ran: ATTRIB -s -h mbrp /s /d (Where mbrp contains the directory causing problem) hoping that somehow, some System Attributes could be removed.FWIW, it seems this happened as I was trying to run an Avisynth64 script with new installation of MPC-HC64.A this point, I am out of ideas. I know that switching to a new regular user account would solve the problem, but I see that as a last resort.

Display Hidden Folders / Files To Access An Appdata Folder

Feb 5, 2011

I was trying to display Hidden Folders/files to access an appdata folder under C:Usersusernameappdata. (it's to fix an issue with the game Dead Space 2) Anyway, I opened My Computer, then C drive, then Users. In here, I right clicked on empty space and opened properties. I checked 'Hidden' and apply. Said it needed administrator rights, I accepted. Then most desktop items disappeared, most files from my documents disappeared and after reboot, The ATI catalyst control centre is popping up an error message saying 'failed to start'.I realised I chose to hide all the files within that folder instead of showing hidden files/folders..I went to folder options and chose Show Hidden file and I can see them again but they have that see through look to them. ATI catalyst still won't start on reboot. I tried system restore to yesterday but still exact same. When I go to User Properties on the C drive again, it shows the files as Read Only and Hidden is unchecked.
