View 3 RepliesMy Acer netbook has developed some kind of fault and I am unsure as to what I ought to do. The netbook does boot to BIOS and also will boot up from an external drive...but will not boot normally. I am thinking of replacing the hard drive but don't know if there could be something else wrong. It says sometimes that it can't read it and from this I am not sure if there is something else wrong. If I change the drive does it sound as though things will work? There are also a couple of other intermittent faults such as certain letters and numbers not working and then everything is fine for a while...

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a laptop which is connected to an external monitor through a HDMI cable.Sometimes when I'm using the external monitor for watching a movie or playing a game I close the laptop lid. If I need to type for a second, when I open the laptop it automatically changes from the external display to the laptop display. This sometimes crashes certain applications and games. I would much prefer if it didn't automatically change my current screen when I plugged in a HDMI cable or when I opened the laptop lid. Is this possible?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've taken the HDD out of an old iMac and put it in a USB caddy. I use HFS Explorer to access it from my work XP laptop and can retrieve files off it easily.I've bought a new Windows 7 desktop and want to do the same thing, however when I plug it in it's not recognised in Explorer. I go to Disk Management and it suggests I have to initialize it before it can be accessed, but I don't want to format it, just use HFS explorer to get some files off it. I didn't have to do any of this on my XP laptop - it worked first time as soon as I plugged the external drive in?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am trialing Macrium Reflect because of its good reputation. I have a simple requirement. Backup to external hard drive (WD Passport), it is USB 2.0. Then use the Windows PE rescue CD to boot up and restore from external HDD. I have been researching this. I know about the lack of USB 3.0 support. But my drive is USB 2.0.

View 1 Replies View RelatedSo I had the power go off while I was running bitlocker (to go?) on my external hdd. I was not able to pause it before this happened. I was also running BL on an internal drive. Both were interrupted. I was able to resume and finish the internal drive. I was not able to resume the external. The BL application just stop responding when I try to resume/unlock the disk. It also seems I can't restart the machine normally when BL is trying to unlock the drive.
I read somewhere on the ms support site that even with power failure, resuming is possible. This might have only applied to an internal drive. I do recall seeing the pause button for the external, with a note that I needed to pause to stop in case of data corruption or something like that. Is there a way to recover my external? Do I need to let the program "not respond" for the same time or maybe longer than the time it spent encrypting it? Could I remove the drive and make it an internal?

I wanna know if there's any problem if I install Windows 7 in 1TB and win XP in the 500GB hard disc and put both in one PC. Could I be able to choose which one to start during boot after that, like in Linux?
View 4 Replies View RelatedFor some reason, the transfer rate on my 2TB Western Digital internal hard drive has dropped through the floor. I'm not sure what has happened but when when I try to copy files on HD I'm only getting a maximum transfer speed of 4MB/second, which is abysmal. For example, as I write I'm doing a test copy of a folder (to another folder on the same drive) containing 90 gig of misc. files. Windows is reporting that this transfer will take around one day to complete!
I error checked the drive and it came up healthy, and in all other areas, it seems to be working fine. All these problems seem to have started since I decided to reformat the hard drive and reinstall Window, a job which I've done on this particular setup at least a couple of dozen times before with no problems at all. I must say though that installing Windows was SLOOOW this time though, a lot slower than normal, and I'd say it took about 3 times as long to do as normal.
My setup:
Hard Drive: Western Digital WD20EVDS-63T3B0
Motherboard: ASUS P6TD Deluxe BIOS rev. 0608 (latest)
GFX card Nvidia Quadro 3800
CPU: Intel i7 975
12 gb RAM
Windows 7 Home Premium x64

View 3 Replies View RelatedMy © drive only has about 2GB left free for use but my partition drive/extra drive (E) has 90GB free,
My documents is the one taking up the majority of the room on the © drive, it is possible to operate my documents out of (E) drive rather than © or will this cause problems when using iTunes, installing programmes/programme updates etc.
Would there be any benefits or draw backs from moving it over to the (E) drive or would it be more hassle then it is worth?
I have a hard-disk of 250gb with load of nearly 200gb. Unfortunately there is no backup and the hard-disk not detected in another computer, means possibly damaged. Is there any process to save some or entire data from the hard-disk. It consists of some important data.
View 5 Replies View RelatedOn my Windows 7 Ultimate 64Bit machine the harddisc shows a lot of activity after the screensaver starts. As soon as I end the screensaver this stops.Of course it is not possible to check that in task manager (unless I missed some recording functionality of the task manager). This only happens after approx 8pm.I was looking for some planned maintenance stuff or some antivirus things but I cannot find any.Is there some tool, that records the processes that access the harddisc? Are there any built in tools for such a task from Windows 7?

View 8 Replies View Relatedi have been on various forums for advice but unable to solve - this is the problem -
* it turns on & I CAN get into advanced menus
* it will not repair itself no matter what
* it will not go into any other modes , safe Etc....therefore I cannot restore to factory settings etc....
* ive Tried all tricks such as F8, Alt & F11 etc..... to get into advanced menu settings - all lead to the black screen
* everything i click on enter leads to a black screen - only a white curser appears.
its as if there is no way of accessing the computer disc/ hard drive in anyway from boot up. there is clearly a hardware problem but i cannot access anything internal beyond ordinary & advanced menus i just keep being led to the black screen & no activity. the menus work & that is all. i run Windows 7 on a Dell inspiron 1564.
The hard disk of my Gateway NV78 notebook pre-installed with Windows 7 HP has crashed. I have made the recovery discs in 3 DVDs . I will be buying a new hard disk. I want to format and 0 write and wipe the entire hard drive in an Asus EEEPC with no system disc and re-install windows 7 home premium. The windows registration number is on the back of the computer.
Did not come with a windows disc or recovery disc from the factory, IE windows 7 home pro was pre-installed.
I created a system recover boot disc/CD. This machine has no CD/DVD drive, but I do have a USB CD/DVD drive.
If I format and write the drive, but leave the partitions will I be able to re-install this version of windows that came with the machine ??
Is there a way I can remove all the partitions from my Hard drive and do a full format (not quick)? The windows 7 install disc does a quick format but I would like to clean it thoroughly. Is there a utility I can use at boot time to do this?
