Boot To BIOS And From External Disc But Not From Hard Drive
Oct 11, 2012My Acer netbook has developed some kind of fault and I am unsure as to what I ought to do. The netbook does boot to BIOS and also will boot up from an external drive...but will not boot normally. I am thinking of replacing the hard drive but don't know if there could be something else wrong. It says sometimes that it can't read it and from this I am not sure if there is something else wrong. If I change the drive does it sound as though things will work? There are also a couple of other intermittent faults such as certain letters and numbers not working and then everything is fine for a while...

Mar 30, 2011I have recently built a new computer not so long ago. But starting today a Message of my "USB Device being unrecognizable" kept popping up.It is always my Razer DeathAdder mouse that dies in the process. I checked the Device Manager and under "Razer Device" It has the "Virtual HID Minidriver" with the computer and question mark icon at the bottom right of the computer icon. Does that mean it's the problem? This is the image of the message:

Simply put, my boot manager is missing, but only when my windows install disc is not in the disc drive. It started several months ago and I just left it be, let the disc it int he disc drive and it was not that big of a deal. But just did a clean install couple days ago I re-installed windows 7 ultimate 64-bit on my computer (using an upgrade disc if that makes a difference).I formatted the drive with what I guess is a quick format (the option the install disc gives you). I have tried doing a repair with the install disc but no problems are found every time I try.

I use HFS Explorer to access it from my work XP laptop and can retrieve files off it easily.I've bought a new Windows 7 desktop and want to do the same thing, however when I plug it in it's not recognised in Explorer. I go to Disk Management and it suggests I have to initialize it before it can be accessed, but I don't want to format it, just use HFS explorer to get some files off it. I didn't have to do any of this on my XP laptop - it worked first time as soon as I plugged the external drive in?

Sep 18, 2011So I had the power go off while I was running bitlocker (to go?) on my external hdd. I was not able to pause it before this happened. I was also running BL on an internal drive. Both were interrupted. I was able to resume and finish the internal drive. I was not able to resume the external. The BL application just stop responding when I try to resume/unlock the disk. It also seems I can't restart the machine normally when BL is trying to unlock the drive.
I read somewhere on the ms support site that even with power failure, resuming is possible. This might have only applied to an internal drive. I do recall seeing the pause button for the external, with a note that I needed to pause to stop in case of data corruption or something like that. Is there a way to recover my external? Do I need to let the program "not respond" for the same time or maybe longer than the time it spent encrypting it? Could I remove the drive and make it an internal?

Sep 26, 2012I know, should have a backup, I was actually about to create a backup when the flash drive failed on me unfortunately. My newest backup is from about 5 days ago, so I'd prefer to be able to restore the current files.
I moved the drive over to another computer and tried to save a file but when I checked again the file was gone, like it never saved at all. Subsequently, after removing and plugging it back in the computer did not detect the drive (or see it in disc management). It does show up as a generic USB drive in the device manager, but there are no properties for it.
When I add it to a computer, it still adds drivers for it, but then nothing happens after that. It may also be a hardware problem, since the drive fell on the ground pretty hard a while back, but seemed to be working fine. There isn't an easy way to open it up and check.
I also tried using a few data recovery programs, but they couldn't detect the drive either.
External Hard Drive - Drive Letter Changed - Unable To Change Back?
Aug 21, 2012I have a USB external hard drive that I keep all my documents etc on (had it for years)I upgraded from Vista Home to & Home Premium then had to upgrade recently to Professional to run my Sage. Through all these upgrades my ext. drive ran fine. Occasionally the drvie letter would change if I had something else plugged into the USB, this was always easily corected in disk management by changing the drive path.The connection on the case packed up so I had to get the drive put into a new case, now when I plug it in the drive is assigned G instead of F, I tried to change the drive letter allocation in Disk Management but it won't let me as the program still thinks I have a second ext. hard drive which is labelled F. I suspect this has happened because when the usb connection broke the drive was disconnected suddenly instead of a proper eject.How do I get Disk Management to remove the inactive drive - i can't find any obvious way - eject, delete etc are all missing when I click on tools or tasks.

I noticed that if I do anything to a file that is in an external drive, that file can not be saved under the same name (read only). In order to do so one must save it internally and then copy or move it to the external drive.So I did just that--I copied a file from taken from an external drive, saved it in the internal one and then copied it back to the external one. Now if I r-click the propeerties of these 2 same files and then go to the 'Security' tab a difference is immediately apparent: The internal one has -1- System & -2 My-computername (user-PCuser and -3- Administrators (user-PCAdministrators) with all 3 accounts allowing all (full control, read, write, etc..). While the external drive has in Properties; -1- System -2- Administrators (user-PCAdministrators) and -3- Users (user-PCUserrs) with this final 3d one (and different one) with no Allow for "full control, or modify or write. So how does one have all its files in this external drive behave and be equal to all the same files in the internal drive?Since -3- Users (user-PCUserrs) in the external drive is that which is differnt from the internal drive I was wondering if it is OK to delete this Permission or 'attribute' or whatever it is called and create instead one equal to the one in the internal drive -3- Administrators (user-PCAdministrators)? One of the drives assigned letter K often comes up as E and I have to change as application is looking for K. Another disk in this dock works fine. Apr 4, 2011i got a new processor, the o.c software and teh bios filed to set on auto, so i had to do it manually..over and over and over and over again. around 8 am i started to tweak the setting on the o.c software and in my slep deprived state i did something very stupid..i set the o.c software to load the last setting on startup.afterward i hit a setting the crashed the computer, so now i can't boot it, cuase the o.c software is loading those com crashing setting on startup. so i when to use a back up harddrive which was empty, so i am now using teh computer with a fresh hdd. the other hardrive is as it was when i screwed up royal.all ihave to do is load internal harddrive on my external hdd dock, in a virtualized environment which i looked for help threw google, which lead me to virtual box..which was 3 hours of wasted time, then i ran another search which lead me here eventaully, which referred me VMware, so i went to VMware only to find a god awful amount of crap i don't need and getting support from them was a joke, put in a ticket and await..wait..wait..wait, two hours later , i come back here. i had no idea what api from VMware to go and get most of it seems like its meant for servers, and im not running a server.i have a hdd thats good, in a external dock, i can load its internal working threw my computer, but i need it virtaulized in order to uncheck that box in the o.c software so it doesn't load on startup, thats it >.<

When i place the windows disc into the dvd drive nothing much happens. It makes a few noises then nothing. It's an optiarc dvd rw drive which otherwise seems to be working fine. I've already used the 32 bit and 64 bit discs to upgrade on my two other machines so i know there isnt a problem with them. I have checked that the drive is first in line for booting the machine but to no avail.

But I've convinced myself that I won't use Vista once I get everything reinstalled in Windows 7, and now wish to install Windows 7 Pro on a new drive. I'll take my Vista drive out, install the new drive and load Windows 7, and then, put the Vista drive back in as a secondary so that I'll have easy access to all my data as I complete the changeover. I can then use the Vista drive as a backup, etc.
I've ordered the Windows 7 Pro upgrade disc. Question is, do I need to reinstall Vista on the new drive before I put in the upgrade disc? Or can I just put in the new drive, boot Windows 7 from the install disc, and then insert the Vista disc if it asks for the qualifying media (or does Windows 7 even ask for qualifying media?

Mar 18, 2011I am trying to run memtest on a new build and for some reason, the machine will not boot from the disc drive. I'm positive that it CAN boot from the disc drive because I just installed windows 7x64 on it last night. I have already configured the BIOS to boot from CDROM as it's first choice and selected to boot from CDROM thru the boot menu. I am 100% positive that this memtest disc is good because I just successfully ran it on my main machine with no problems.
ps. to power the disc drive I am using a 4-pin molex to SATA adapter since my PSU only has 2 SATA pwr connectors and they are being used to power my 2 HDD's. I don't know if this has to do with it...could it be a bad adapter not powering the drive at initial startup? Bear in mind that the drive works fine once I'm in the OS.
