Cannot Use DVD RW Drive E For Another Disc Until Reboot
Oct 12, 2011
When I first use my Drive E and insert a disc it works fine. When insert a second disc later I keep getting the information from the first disc and cannot use Drive E for another disc until I reboot. I do have another drive (F) but would really like to resolve this problem.

I have a toshiba satellite L750 running Windows 7 home premium, when trying to burn anything onto a blank disc I get as far as selecting my items and asking it to burn but it keeps telling me to insert a blank disc (which obviously I have). I have tried several different types of blank disc but it dosnt seem to recognise any of them.

So I have an bit of an odd and I think unique problem (as many searches came up with no solutions). Simply put, my boot manager is missing, but only when my windows install disc is not in the disc drive. It started several months ago and I just left it be, let the disc it int he disc drive and it was not that big of a deal. But just did a clean install couple days ago I re-installed windows 7 ultimate 64-bit on my computer (using an upgrade disc if that makes a difference).I formatted the drive with what I guess is a quick format (the option the install disc gives you). I have tried doing a repair with the install disc but no problems are found every time I try.

I'm running Win 7/64 Home Premium on my media PC with 7 USB drives, all connected via a powered hub.
Whenever I reboot (warm or cold), the sharing permissions are lost, generally to all, although every so often one of the WD drives will maintain it (the Seagate ones always lose them). I've tried using different ports to no avail. I've changed the properties of the drives so that I am the owner (as an Administrator). That doesn't help either.
I've read that Windows keeps a list of dynamic shares (or something like that) and that this behavior is by design as drives can be disconnected when the PC is not running. Is this true? I never had a problem with Vista, so this is definitely a Win 7 thing.

I know, should have a backup, I was actually about to create a backup when the flash drive failed on me unfortunately. My newest backup is from about 5 days ago, so I'd prefer to be able to restore the current files.
I moved the drive over to another computer and tried to save a file but when I checked again the file was gone, like it never saved at all. Subsequently, after removing and plugging it back in the computer did not detect the drive (or see it in disc management). It does show up as a generic USB drive in the device manager, but there are no properties for it.
When I add it to a computer, it still adds drivers for it, but then nothing happens after that. It may also be a hardware problem, since the drive fell on the ground pretty hard a while back, but seemed to be working fine. There isn't an easy way to open it up and check.
I also tried using a few data recovery programs, but they couldn't detect the drive either.

I'm using a Dell laptop Studio XPS 1640. Ok, I was about to upgrade to Windows 7 and it listed a couple of programs that needed to be deleted, so I uninstalled them. The 2nd or 3rd time I was required to restart my computer, it froze at the "Shutting Down..." screen for about 20 minutes. I waited and waited and decided to power down. I turned it back on, and it didnt say Windows was not shut down properly, so i figured it was ok.
However when I booted back up, I was going to eject and re-insert the upgrade CD. I hit eject, nothing happens. Hit eject again, nothing happens. I go to Computer to try and view the CD thats in my CD Drive....NOTHING SHOWS UP! MY CD drive is now UNRECOGNIZED by my computer! Now I cant complete the upgrade. Not to mention, the upgrade made me uninstall itunes and my virus protection, saying a new version will be installed automatically after the upgrade.

Whether it's watching a movie or playing a game, it often stops and I can't see my drive in the system. After I restart the computer, it's back.
I don't know if it has anything to do with it, but it first happened while I was playing TES III: Morrowind (vanilla), when it tried to load a cutscene. I heard that earlier versions have some Safedisc protection which can mess with your system (it was 1.2 btw). I don't use that anymore, now I have Steam GOTY version, but it happens anytime

Im attempting to upgrade from vista 32 to windows 7 on an hp compaq presario cq60 with and AMD athlon Dual Core @ 2.10ghz. When i place the windows disc into the dvd drive nothing much happens. It makes a few noises then nothing. It's an optiarc dvd rw drive which otherwise seems to be working fine. I've already used the 32 bit and 64 bit discs to upgrade on my two other machines so i know there isnt a problem with them. I have checked that the drive is first in line for booting the machine but to no avail.

I'm moving from Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Pro and originally thought about a dual boot. But I've convinced myself that I won't use Vista once I get everything reinstalled in Windows 7, and now wish to install Windows 7 Pro on a new drive. I'll take my Vista drive out, install the new drive and load Windows 7, and then, put the Vista drive back in as a secondary so that I'll have easy access to all my data as I complete the changeover. I can then use the Vista drive as a backup, etc.
I've ordered the Windows 7 Pro upgrade disc. Question is, do I need to reinstall Vista on the new drive before I put in the upgrade disc? Or can I just put in the new drive, boot Windows 7 from the install disc, and then insert the Vista disc if it asks for the qualifying media (or does Windows 7 even ask for qualifying media?

I have a SATA DVD RW Drive. The drive would appear when I boot my computer and I can use it with no problem.
Occasionally...,especially when I leave my computer overnight, my DVD RW would disappear. I couldn't locate it from "My Computer" or "Device Manager". However when I reboot my computer the drive would appear again.

I am trying to run memtest on a new build and for some reason, the machine will not boot from the disc drive. I'm positive that it CAN boot from the disc drive because I just installed windows 7x64 on it last night. I have already configured the BIOS to boot from CDROM as it's first choice and selected to boot from CDROM thru the boot menu. I am 100% positive that this memtest disc is good because I just successfully ran it on my main machine with no problems.
ps. to power the disc drive I am using a 4-pin molex to SATA adapter since my PSU only has 2 SATA pwr connectors and they are being used to power my 2 HDD's. I don't know if this has to do with it...could it be a bad adapter not powering the drive at initial startup? Bear in mind that the drive works fine once I'm in the OS.

All of a sudden about two weeks ago one of my ports for my wireless router dongle decided to quite so I used another and after a couple days that quit as well. Now none of the four work nor does the disc drive. I have tried everything to attempt to correct this but I get the same result. I don't know if it is in the system configuration I am missing or the CPU board going bad. I would hate to buy a new board and have the same results their by telling me it was the Windows 7 software all together. I could re-install Windows 7 but I do not want to delete all my programs I use that are loaded.

I have two external drives that I'd like to share. I have them mapped as an X: and Y: drive. I go into advanced sharing settings > permissions, and add Full Control for the group "Everyone". I hit apply and it looks fine and dandy. When I reboot my machine the sharing settings are lost.
When the computer initially starts up Auto Play opens for both drives. Not sure if this has anything to do with it though. how to get my sharing settings to stick for both externals?

I have Win 7 ver 6.1 (build 7600) on Desktop and I have a Linux server. I don't use a password to logon to windows.
I successfully mapped Linux drives using my Linux user (which happens to be the same as the windows user) but on Linux I have a password. All the mappings were OK (4 directories) asking me on each one username + password + ticking the box called "retain credentials".
All went OK until I rebooted, then a message pop-up that "could not reconnect all network drives"...appeared: => the old stupid message from win XP.
Ok I opened My computer and surprise: My user and my password from the sharing pop-up window were gone! I've inserted them again and all went OK.
I thought they solved the old windows XP problem which clears the user + password from the Network drive mapping IF you do not have the SAME password as the mapped drives.
What can I do to retain that User+Password combination for good in Win 7 Mapping?

Ever since I've had my computer there has been an extra drive on it. it was called microsoft (Protected). It has absolutely nothing on it, and it has no use. I have been trying to delete it to no avail, so I renamed it to annoying drive.
Whenever I try to access it it gives me an access denied message. It has no owner, or even permissions, and when I try to change it to me, or the admin, it gives me the same message. I went to the list of things on the computer, and I can't even find it. I then attempted using lock hunter to find out what was blocking me from changing the file. Also to no avail. It says that there is nothing protecting it.

I just built a new pc and when I run cmd as admin and do a chkdsk/f or /r, every time it says the drive is locked, and it will do the chkdsk on sys restart. I am 99% sure I used the same disc for both installs of win 7 x64. Is there something wrong with my install discs or something? Did the files I moved from the old pc have a virus or something in it? Are the drives locked because I didn't partition them correctly? How do I figure out why my drive is always locked?
