i have two external hardrives, well a laptop hardrive and a desktop hardrive in enclosures, and they were working fine with windows 7, but then i installed a virtual disc program virtual clone drive and now they won't show up at all.
anyone else have a similar problem or know what may have happened, i already uninstalled the virtual clone disc program but it still won't load.
How do I get my external drives to show up in my computer as a letter and not in the printer and devices.... Some of my external drives works fine. Everything was working fine 3 months ago. Everything works fine on my laptop...
View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently noticed an issue when trying to connect to external hard drives. Initially noted that it wasn't showing in 'my computer' and so assumed I had driver issues and sought to update them from Dell's site. After doing so there was still no change, but noted that It was appearing in 'device manager'.I even tried updating the USB hubs from the Device Manager, and it states that they are all up-to-date with the correct drivers. Both external hard drives that i have tried has worked on other PC's so i assume that mine is the issue.

However, both of my hard drives (one SSD, one regular HDD) are showing up as external drives (plug-and-play). If I click the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon, I could actually "eject" both of my hard drives.
View 5 Replies View Relatedam trying to do a backup of my Win 7 system drive (C, but the backup utility is saying that it must backup by non-system drives (E: and H, which happen to have "System Volume Information" folders on them. They are not system drives. E: is my main utilities drive and H: is my games drive.Somehow, Windows thinks they are system drives, when in reality they aren't.Any ideas on how to change them? When I go in to Disk Management, they are not showing as system drives. They are all partitions on the same hard drive, but there are other partitions not included in the backup.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI just installed Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit OS. The BIOS sees both hard drives and the CD and DVD drive and the Windows Device Manager shows the extra hard drive and both optical drives. When I click the folder in the task bar (Libraries) I can only see "C" drive and no optical drives either. When I click on the CD drive I get the right menues for it, but it does not work at all. If I put a CD in the drive it locks up the system and I have to power off the computer before I can eject it.

I'd like an icon to show up on the taskbar whenever I insert a USB thumbdrive. Then I can click this icon to safely eject the USB. I'm not talking about the notification area. I'm talking about the taskbar where open programs show their respective icons.
View 3 Replies View RelatedNew external HDD won't show in "Computer". I Have searched a lot, but only find comments directing me to Disk management and Device manager. The Ext. HD is not showing there either. Power light is on. This is a Lacie 2 TB Minimus USB 3.0 External Hard Drive [URL] No "Doorbell" sound when I plug in or un plug the USB connector. The LaC i.e., troubleshooting page tells me to go to device manager, but like l said, it's not showing there either.
Plus, it seems to have knocked out several of my USB ports, and I had the warning flag next to several of them in device manager ,but I was able to get them back by right clicking on each line one at a time, Un installing, and right clicking on the heading for the group, and selected "scan for hardware change". Then in the tray, I saw Driver was installed, or device is ready, something like that. All the ports seem to be working now, and the yellow flags are gone.
I did then try the External drive again, but it is still not working. I also installed desktop manager, but it's telling me to plug in my external drive, and then to re start my device. And if I start Desktop Manager it says, "No LaCie Desktop compliant device found." So I have another computer that shares this monitor,so I shut this one down, and hooked up my usb keyboard and mouse to the other older desktop system running XP, and the older computer does recognize this external hard drive.
It is in My computer on the older XP system/computer. So I shut that one down and started this one, and it does not show up on this computer, but then I noticed my keyboard would not work. Had to switch the keyboard USB ports to the other front USB port. And I had the yellow flags back in device manager again. Had to un-install again and let the system re install (selecting "scan for hardware change). Windows 7 Home premium, 64 Bit, Compaq Desktop, model 2010.
I have two 250gb drives that are connected to my one Eide connection on my Asus P5Q deluxe Mobo. They show in the bios and on startup, but not in my computer or drive manager? How can I get them to show up so I can format and use them as extra space.

I've just received my Western Element 2,5Tb today. When I first plugged it in, it worked normally. But due to my over-excitement, I copied too much files at the same time and it wasn't working anymore. I regretted doing this immediately.
I have searched on the internet to find some solutions but all of them didn't work. I've checked the Computer Management, Disk Management, but nothing about my External HD showed up. In the notification area, my laptop still detected it and I can removed it properly [even though i can't use it at all].
I tried to connect to my USB and another Samsung 500Gb HDD. And it worked perfectly fine. Then, I tried to connect my new HDD to my sister's lap [she is using Window Vista] and it worked perfectly fine too.
I made the HDD from my dead PC external. It does not show any of my Windows related documents or desktop folders. Is there anyway I can find and retreive them?
View 6 Replies View Relatedok i have a western digital my passport external hard drive. its Mosley contains games and all of my music and a video. ive haven't even had it for a year and it is not showing up on my pc. i did what other forms that i looked at "going through the computer management and changing the later it doesn't work". but when i did it, it took like ten minutes to load up usually when it is in sleep mode. plus when it is loading i went into my pc and the window is not responding i tried to end it. so i unplugged the usb and everything worked again. it works on other pc's but mine. some of my friends said it could be a virus or a Trojan. i dont know what to do to fix this im thinking of getting a new hard drive but i want to make sure i can fix this before i spend $60-$70 on a new one.

Powered usb external drives (the ones that are based on standard hard drives and plug into the wall) are recognized, but the smaller usb powered ones are not. The drives work on the same computers when booted xp so it's not the usb itself.

has anyone else noticed their external usb drives spinning down more often with windows 7? power management setting is set to high performance and to never turn off hard drives. i didnt see this issue under vista. having to wait those few seconds for the drive to spin back up when i access the drive frustrates me!!
View 3 Replies View RelatedMy external hard disk up until a few weeks ago had been working perfectly. The next time I used it - windows 7 will not recognise it. I have tried different USB ports and computers. But it doesn't seem to work. It doesn't show up in device manager or disk manager. Its like nothing is plugged in. I tried switching hard disk cases and power supplies. But still nothing. The hard disk seems to try and run every so often, the light flashed red and it makes whirring noises as if it was connecting to the computer.
I dont know what else to do ? And it has almos 1500 GB of data.
i bought a trix hard drive enclosure/case for my 2.5 250GB hard drive. I connected everything up and inserted the hard drive usb into my laptop but windows will not show the drive in my computer. It does make the beeping noise telling me its detected the drive and it also shows in device management.The strange thing is i tried installing linux on it and it did, but the computer will not boot into it from the enclosure, but does from the hard drive. Ive also tried it on 2 computers and both will not assign the drive and give it a drive letter.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have used "search" in microsoft before there was windows. From that time to 95, 98, xp, vista, but Windows 7 has me baffled. My Desktop pc died and I was well backed up but now I need to find some stuff in one of the drives. Windows support is useless. Give it more than one word and it is lost most of the time. When desktop comes up I am limited to all programs on the c drive of where to search. When I go to computer and select an external drive of course the search option disappears. I detest the standard layout as it is so different from all the other systems which were easy to use.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have Asus N55SF laptop, with Windows 7 SP1 64 bit. Also, I have 2 external hard drives. One with USB 3.0, and one USB 2.0. Following problems, I am going to describe below, happen to the both of them. Just to mention, external drives are tested on desktop computer and following problems do not happen.Let me now describe what happens when I try certain actions:
- When I try to copy large files (10 or more GB) I get an error that destination is no longer visible. External drives disappear from My Computer and I can't do safe remove. But when I copy files using programs FastCopy or TeraCopy everything copies well and drives do not disappear.
- When I try to do Windows Backup and encrypt them using BitLocker drives also disappear, and are not visible within OS.
- There is a difference between external hard with USB 3.0 port and the one with 2.0 port:
1-when one with 3.0 disappears after described actions I can't see it from Device Manager, I can see it only after windows reboot. USB 3.0 disk connects to one USB 3.0 port on laptop.
2-when one with 2.0 port disappears I can see it from Device Manager, and I only have to unplug it, and plug it in again to see it. USB 2.0 disk connects to 2 USB 2.0 ports on laptop.
Common to both disks is that when then disappear from My computer the diode on the external disk cases are still flashing, what probably means that they have some power. Both disk are formated to NTFS, and Allocation unit size is set to: Default. Their removal policy is set to: Better performance (default). On laptop I only have Windows, Office and Asus drivers. Antivirus is: MSE.
I am currently running Ubuntu 11.04 on my HP (DV5 1110em) laptop from an external USB 2 Buffalo ministation hard drive, I have noticed my machine is equipped with an E-SATA port. Would using an e-sata external hard drive be any faster that the usb option ?.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI've done a bit of research but I'm not sure if these drives actually are less reliable than equivalent 3.5" ones. I have tended to use these for back-ups and have had a few problems with a Toshiba and a Freecom Toughdrive. Is it perhaps down to the fact that most of these drives do not require a separate power supply but are powered solely by the USB connector and perhaps are more prone to electrical connection issues. I used to have a USB ethernet connector before I upgraded my system and this had problems showing in the event log which was cured by cleaning the connector with electrical contact cleaner. Perhaps it is simply the USB connectors.
View 7 Replies View RelatedSo today is my first day with 7 and overall I love it... but I have run into a strange problem with my video library. I have many videos organized by folders on two separate (but identical, both Lacie 1TB) drives that I would like to add to my video library. I can add one drive without trouble. When I try to add folders from the second drive from within media center, the program seems to be adding it but says 0 videos found and when i check back, the folders are no longer listed under the library (essentially the same thing happens from wmp.)
It doesn't matter which drive I try - as long as I delete the libraries first and only plug one drive in, either will add its folders to the video library individually. It's when I try adding the second drive that I can't add its folders. I can always access videos through explorer and view them just fine - strictly a library problem. I can also add the folders from the 2nd new drive to any other library without problem (there are no folders in either that I included in any other libraries - it's only a problem when there are folders in the same library on the first drive.)
When I try right clicking on folders in explorer from the 2nd drive (after adding the first) and try to 'include in library,' it starts to work and then says "The folder could not be included in Videos." I've tried changing the names of the drives and the drive letters, swapping cables and USB ports and nothing works.
My HP netbook will not recognize my verbatium external hard drive, which is about 2 years old and which it recognized last week. Help. Do I need a driver for it? If so, where can I find one?

I have a Compaq Presario V2000 (Yeah I know, probably not the best machine for Windows 7) and any type of USB drive I put into a USB port will not show up in My Computer but it does show up in Device Manager and Disk Management. However, my iPhone will connect just fine.
I have checked all the drivers and they are up to date. I went to the Western Digital (my non accessible External Hard Drive) site and there were no new drivers for the drive. I un installed all of the USB Root Hubs and then re installed them. I have basically tried everything thing that I found after googling.
