Internal Drives Showing Up As External Drives?
Jul 21, 2011
I just finished putting together my computer, installed Windows 7 Pro 64 bits. However, both of my hard drives (one SSD, one regular HDD) are showing up as external drives (plug-and-play). If I click the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon, I could actually "eject" both of my hard drives.

Been on Windows 7 for a couple years. (On Windows 7 HomePremium) Windows 7 on partition of my main HD (sata) (Western Digital- have had good luck with them over the years)had a second 320 gig HD (sata) (WD) and a third 12 year old WD ide 40 gig (scuzzy, mainly just backups) Abit IP35Pro mobo (was suspecting sata connects) It's been fine. Until maybe a few months ago when my 320 gig hd blinked out once. I ended up clean reinstal windows, wiped it, lost some data. changing the sata connections brought it back. Might've happened twice.

Let me say first that I am not dual booting. I have a 250gb Internal SATA drive, and a 800gb internal SATA drive. Both hooked up and ready to go.What I want to do, and am unsure if it's possible, is to install Windows 7 64bit on the 250gb drive, and thats IT. I want to boot from that drive, but everything else I want to go onto the 800gb drive.I haven't done this yet but I get the feeling that if I were, when it boots from the 250, things that I download and install would always try and add themselves there. And I dread of having to manually move downloaded files and redirect installed programs every time.

I am running windows 7 home 64 bit (build 7600). I have a gateway fx7026. It has two internal hard drives. When I look under device manager they are both listed and they are both listed under the bios menu. When I look in my computer though under hard disk drives it only shows the one that I have the OS on. When I had Vista it showed both of them. Is this something I should be worried about. The drives are listed as WDC WD3200AAJS-22B4A0 DRIVE 1 and WDC WD3200AAJS-22B4A0 DRIVE 0.

My problem is with all the users files on the file server don't all show-up. Some stay as 'My Documents'.
I believe there is something to delete within the folders to make it show the names properly, but I can't remember.

I have Windows 2008 R2 servers as my DCs. I create a group policy on the 2008 servers to map my network drives. In Windows XP it works great 100% of the time. In Windows 7 this is not the case. I can't see the drive letters in My Computer but if I go out to DOS and look using the net use command I can see the drive letters 100 % of the time.I can also see the drive letters within programs.I just can't see them within My Computer.I looked at the Reg setting for the following settings and they are not in play.

Windows Server 2008 R2Windows 7 32 BitI have a Windows 7 Enterprise box that when started will only create 2 of 3 mapped network drives. This does not happen every time either, just about 2-3 days of the 5 day work week. 2 of the drives are mapped via a script, while the 1 drive that is the problem child is set through the Properties-->Profile-->Home Folder of the user on our AD box. We have set the drop down letter to H and verified the path. It is correct, as it works some days.

I'm installing Windows 7 on an older PC. It was running on it before but my hard drive bit the dust. When I boot from the install disk and go to install it, there are no hard drives listed and the message says "No drives were found. Click Load Driver to provide a mass storage driver for installation."
It's an old Dell Dimension 8300 with a couple WD hard drives in it, a 250GB and a 500GB. I could get the model numbers if that's necessary.

I have a Dell XPS M1710 laptop. I recently installed windows 7 home premium 64bit. I can't seem to get my built in Ricoh 5 in 1 memory card reader to work. I installed the recommended driver using the dell drivers on their website. None of the drives are appearing under my computer, and nothing happens when I insert a memory card. I have tried several 1 and 2gb cards. Both high speed and regular with no success. I went to folder options and unchecked the box to hide empty drives in my computer. I am unable to locate anything under device manager for the Ricoh card reader.A - I want it to display the empty drives in my computer
B - I want it to read my darn memory cards

This problem just popped up on both my win 7 machines. Powered usb external drives (the ones that are based on standard hard drives and plug into the wall) are recognized, but the smaller usb powered ones are not. The drives work on the same computers when booted xp so it's not the usb itself.

I've been reading about issues with people having problems with their SSD's not being reconized by Windows 7 Ultimate.but my WD 600gig STAT III Raptor is listed as a SCSI as well. I assume the problem is with my Marvell Driver.I bought this 60gig OCZ Vertex 3 SATA III drive for a Boot drive and had a pain installing drivers for it on a clean install of windows. I plugged it, and my WD Raptor both into the 2 SATA III ports that I have on my ASUS Rampage III MB. I set the Drives to ACHI not IDE. Tried to install Windows, had to force windows to accept the Marvell Drivers...but finally got it installed. Now Im stuck with the OCZ SSD and the Raptor both at SCSI speeds...not able to get them reconized my Windows 7 Ult as SATA drives.Should I try uninstalling the Marvell and JBMicron drivers and let Windows try and install drivers that will work? Funny thing is, I know that windows is reconizing the SSD as a SSD because of the Disk Defrag has been disabled on it...and was able to get some info off the drive via Intels SSD toolbox....OCZ's tool box wont reconize it unless you use Windows drivers. I had to install the Marvell Drivers to install Windows, Windows wouldn't reconize either drive plugged into the SATA III ports.I've tried bout everything, even tried the reg. fix via the Windows Helper with no luck.

I have used "search" in microsoft before there was windows. From that time to 95, 98, xp, vista, but Windows 7 has me baffled. My Desktop pc died and I was well backed up but now I need to find some stuff in one of the drives. Windows support is useless. Give it more than one word and it is lost most of the time. When desktop comes up I am limited to all programs on the c drive of where to search. When I go to computer and select an external drive of course the search option disappears. I detest the standard layout as it is so different from all the other systems which were easy to use.

I have Asus N55SF laptop, with Windows 7 SP1 64 bit. Also, I have 2 external hard drives. One with USB 3.0, and one USB 2.0. Following problems, I am going to describe below, happen to the both of them. Just to mention, external drives are tested on desktop computer and following problems do not happen.Let me now describe what happens when I try certain actions:
- When I try to copy large files (10 or more GB) I get an error that destination is no longer visible. External drives disappear from My Computer and I can't do safe remove. But when I copy files using programs FastCopy or TeraCopy everything copies well and drives do not disappear.
- When I try to do Windows Backup and encrypt them using BitLocker drives also disappear, and are not visible within OS.
- There is a difference between external hard with USB 3.0 port and the one with 2.0 port:
1-when one with 3.0 disappears after described actions I can't see it from Device Manager, I can see it only after windows reboot. USB 3.0 disk connects to one USB 3.0 port on laptop.
2-when one with 2.0 port disappears I can see it from Device Manager, and I only have to unplug it, and plug it in again to see it. USB 2.0 disk connects to 2 USB 2.0 ports on laptop.
Common to both disks is that when then disappear from My computer the diode on the external disk cases are still flashing, what probably means that they have some power. Both disk are formated to NTFS, and Allocation unit size is set to: Default. Their removal policy is set to: Better performance (default). On laptop I only have Windows, Office and Asus drivers. Antivirus is: MSE.

I've done a bit of research but I'm not sure if these drives actually are less reliable than equivalent 3.5" ones. I have tended to use these for back-ups and have had a few problems with a Toshiba and a Freecom Toughdrive. Is it perhaps down to the fact that most of these drives do not require a separate power supply but are powered solely by the USB connector and perhaps are more prone to electrical connection issues. I used to have a USB ethernet connector before I upgraded my system and this had problems showing in the event log which was cured by cleaning the connector with electrical contact cleaner. Perhaps it is simply the USB connectors.

So today is my first day with 7 and overall I love it... but I have run into a strange problem with my video library. I have many videos organized by folders on two separate (but identical, both Lacie 1TB) drives that I would like to add to my video library. I can add one drive without trouble. When I try to add folders from the second drive from within media center, the program seems to be adding it but says 0 videos found and when i check back, the folders are no longer listed under the library (essentially the same thing happens from wmp.)
It doesn't matter which drive I try - as long as I delete the libraries first and only plug one drive in, either will add its folders to the video library individually. It's when I try adding the second drive that I can't add its folders. I can always access videos through explorer and view them just fine - strictly a library problem. I can also add the folders from the 2nd new drive to any other library without problem (there are no folders in either that I included in any other libraries - it's only a problem when there are folders in the same library on the first drive.)
When I try right clicking on folders in explorer from the 2nd drive (after adding the first) and try to 'include in library,' it starts to work and then says "The folder could not be included in Videos." I've tried changing the names of the drives and the drive letters, swapping cables and USB ports and nothing works.

After searching this forum and googling everything I could think of, I still can not find a solution.
I have a Compaq Presario V2000 (Yeah I know, probably not the best machine for Windows 7) and any type of USB drive I put into a USB port will not show up in My Computer but it does show up in Device Manager and Disk Management. However, my iPhone will connect just fine.
I have checked all the drivers and they are up to date. I went to the Western Digital (my non accessible External Hard Drive) site and there were no new drivers for the drive. I un installed all of the USB Root Hubs and then re installed them. I have basically tried everything thing that I found after googling.

Does Windows 7 have a limit on how many USB external hard drives it will use? We have 5 WD My Book 1TB drives; 4 of them are recognized and work just fine with Windows 7 Home Premium 64 (which we recently did a clean install of to replace Vista Home Premium 64), but the 5th one doesn't show up with a drive letter (in Computer or Windows Explorer), even though it does show up in Control Panel.
The one we are having trouble with has had the latest firmware and WD SmartWare installed, and our computer has the most current Dell BIOS installed. We know the drive works, because we can plug it into our other computer which has Windows XP on it and it comes up with a drive letter just fine. Just wondering if there's a limit on how many of these you can use with Windows 7, since we had no problem with the drive until we installed the new OS.

I bought a 2TB external hard drive (Western Digital) earlier this year on sale and for Christmas I got another one for redundancy (a back-up in case the one I have fails). My problem is that while my computer (a Dell Desktop purchased last year) will get a bit glitchy in picking up one (sometimes it won't recognize it but this is seldom), it will never recognize both at the same time. As a result, I have to add files (pictures, music, etc) to my external hard drives one at a time. I've checked all the USB ports with other hardware, and they all work - the only thing I can think of is that this is a Windows issue. I have both external hard drives assigned to different drive paths, so it's not a matter of that.
