Windows 7 Drives Letters Not Showing
Mar 28, 2011
I have Windows 2008 R2 servers as my DCs. I create a group policy on the 2008 servers to map my network drives. In Windows XP it works great 100% of the time. In Windows 7 this is not the case. I can't see the drive letters in My Computer but if I go out to DOS and look using the net use command I can see the drive letters 100 % of the time.I can also see the drive letters within programs.I just can't see them within My Computer.I looked at the Reg setting for the following settings and they are not in play.

I have the problem of a long list of redundant mapped network drives without drive letters, for example, documents, documents~1, documents~2, etc. all with same location...right clicking on the mapped does not present any "disconnect" option.Oh, they do not appear as mapped network drives under "My Computer," but under "Network" and the name of the computer (which is on a wireless network with another computer)...I can go to advanced sharing and stop sharing, but then all folders are unshared including the original...I guess this may be the only way of getting this corrected, but it seems like a long way to do something that should be very simple..

I have two 1TB drives, each containing 4 partitions, used for backing up 4 computers. These drives are regularly switched between buildings as part of our backup strategy, always having one off-site. I have assigned drive letters M,N,O,P to respective partitions. When I swap the drives, the drive letters get reset and have to be manually reassigned. assigning the drive letters, including USBDM, but get no results.

I just finished putting together my computer, installed Windows 7 Pro 64 bits. However, both of my hard drives (one SSD, one regular HDD) are showing up as external drives (plug-and-play). If I click the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon, I could actually "eject" both of my hard drives.

I am using 3 external hard drives and noticed a couple of times there drive letters have changed. Maybe I have had them unplugged for some reason I cannot remember, but it causes confusion with some files that use shortcuts. I would like to know if it is possible to give the drives permanent drive letters also change there names?

I use a lot of different usb hard drives in my shop. I have two basic enclosures, a generic one that uses pata drives on a usb 2.0 cable and an Apricon USB SATA 2.0 adapter.Suddenly when I plug in a new drive device manager does see the drive and installs it in device manager. I can see the drive in Disk Management but it has no drive letter assigned, and therefore doesn't show up in Computer. I can easily just assign a letter in Disk Management and the drive immediately becomes usable. However, I would like to get Windows 7 to resume automatically assigning a drive letter.
I have tried a program called USB DriveCleanup. What it appears to have done is remove all installations of prior USB drives and when I plug in a drive that has been in the machine previously it then goes thru the install again. Yet still no drive letter. I think the program is doing what would manually be done by going into safe mode and cleaning out all the entries that build up there that don't appear in normal mode, then removes them. Basically it seems like a shortcut to manually doing it.
I also tried a registry fix that essentially asked me to delete the upper and lower filters. This seems similiar to fix for CD/DVD drives that no longer appear in Computer. This fix also didn't work.I tried removing and reinstalling the chipset drivers. Still no go.Running Windows 7 Pro SP1, H55 chipset.

I've been reading about issues with people having problems with their SSD's not being reconized by Windows 7 Ultimate.but my WD 600gig STAT III Raptor is listed as a SCSI as well. I assume the problem is with my Marvell Driver.I bought this 60gig OCZ Vertex 3 SATA III drive for a Boot drive and had a pain installing drivers for it on a clean install of windows. I plugged it, and my WD Raptor both into the 2 SATA III ports that I have on my ASUS Rampage III MB. I set the Drives to ACHI not IDE. Tried to install Windows, had to force windows to accept the Marvell Drivers...but finally got it installed. Now Im stuck with the OCZ SSD and the Raptor both at SCSI speeds...not able to get them reconized my Windows 7 Ult as SATA drives.Should I try uninstalling the Marvell and JBMicron drivers and let Windows try and install drivers that will work? Funny thing is, I know that windows is reconizing the SSD as a SSD because of the Disk Defrag has been disabled on it...and was able to get some info off the drive via Intels SSD toolbox....OCZ's tool box wont reconize it unless you use Windows drivers. I had to install the Marvell Drivers to install Windows, Windows wouldn't reconize either drive plugged into the SATA III ports.I've tried bout everything, even tried the reg. fix via the Windows Helper with no luck.

My problem is with all the users files on the file server don't all show-up. Some stay as 'My Documents'.
I believe there is something to delete within the folders to make it show the names properly, but I can't remember.

Windows Server 2008 R2Windows 7 32 BitI have a Windows 7 Enterprise box that when started will only create 2 of 3 mapped network drives. This does not happen every time either, just about 2-3 days of the 5 day work week. 2 of the drives are mapped via a script, while the 1 drive that is the problem child is set through the Properties-->Profile-->Home Folder of the user on our AD box. We have set the drop down letter to H and verified the path. It is correct, as it works some days.

I'm installing Windows 7 on an older PC. It was running on it before but my hard drive bit the dust. When I boot from the install disk and go to install it, there are no hard drives listed and the message says "No drives were found. Click Load Driver to provide a mass storage driver for installation."
It's an old Dell Dimension 8300 with a couple WD hard drives in it, a 250GB and a 500GB. I could get the model numbers if that's necessary.

I have a Dell XPS M1710 laptop. I recently installed windows 7 home premium 64bit. I can't seem to get my built in Ricoh 5 in 1 memory card reader to work. I installed the recommended driver using the dell drivers on their website. None of the drives are appearing under my computer, and nothing happens when I insert a memory card. I have tried several 1 and 2gb cards. Both high speed and regular with no success. I went to folder options and unchecked the box to hide empty drives in my computer. I am unable to locate anything under device manager for the Ricoh card reader.A - I want it to display the empty drives in my computer
B - I want it to read my darn memory cards

Let me explain. These are usb drives connected on a network usb hub. No issues with hub, software, sharing on the hub over network. The only small issue is that for example, clicking on my computer to show drives(which it works and shows them this way in preview task pane window), but on the left pane window where its the "folders" view, under my computer all i show is attached IDE/SATA and local usb attached drives.
This does not concern an issue as a mapped network drive as it is NOT setup as and not needed. Software for the hub controls all of that.
This was not an issue with xp.
[edit] Another issue with this is the right click send-to menu... shows local usb, and just shows 2 out of 4 currently connected usb network drives, all connected via the usb hub either directly plugged in, or plugged into to the network hub via another 4port usb regular hub, which by manufacturer's specs is possible and the device is allowed up to 16 connected devices to the network 4 port usb hub.
[edit #2] The above issue with the 2 of 4 drives seems to be related to NTFS and FAT32 as the 2 shown in the right click send to menu are the NTFS drives, not the FAT32.
[edit #3] Update: The drives that show in the navigation pane (left side) of explorer is the NTFS drives, not the FAT32, same with right click send to menu. Although they show up

I have a general question about how windows assigns drive letters. My son has a Dell laptop with Windows 7. First of all, the card reader works fine. However, I thought the drive letter was always fixed for the sd card reader. When he inserts a micro sd card and adapter in the slot, it pops up the windows info box with the header stating Secure Digital Card F:/. All is well. When he inserts a different micro sd card and adapter in the same slot, it pops up the info box with the header Secure Digital Card G:/. I don't understand the different drive letters. These are identical 2gb micro sd cards. The reason I ask is we are writing an application that stores the sd card drive in a local sqlite database upon initialization of the application. If the drive is not consistent it basically messes up our application.

I just installed Win 7, clean install, on a second HD. On the original drive C:, I have Vista, on the new drive with Win 7, drive letter K:. This is all fine if I boot Vista but when I boot Win 7 (I use F12 with Dell) the drive letters are changed. K: becomes C: and C: becomes D:. When I tried to change the drive letters back so C: becomes K:, it will not let me. I spent most of the day setting up to install Win 7.

until recently I had a ubuntu/Windows 7 dual boot. i got a laptop with ubuntu so i decided to remove it from my pc. after that i had tremendous problems as grub decided to delete my partition table. anyway i got that fixed.so i have 3 hdd's in my pc. 1x 500gb sata, 1x 500gb ide & 1x 1tb sata. i did a fresh install after my boot problem, everything was fine again until today. i installed windows on drive c: on my 500gb sata hdd. the 1tb sata is for data, the ide will be used as a network hdd.so as i turned on my pc today, it didnt boot and just showed a prompt. so i booted from another drive. to my surprise i got a grub command line despite me uninstalling it and doing a fresh install.anyway i booted into the recovery dvd, did startup repair without sucess. so i looked around cmd to find that now my windows partition got assigned the drive letter.i dont know if i recall correctly but i think my teacher said that Windows 7 can only boot from c:. so i think that this is basically my problem.how do i get drive d: to show up as c: again? please npte that i CANNOT boot into windows

I encountered a pretty bad error, but I feel like it's only because when transferring over my system image it did so by going from C --> to D. I've spent hours Google searching and burning bootable discs to no avail. What I've found out is that Partition Magic seems to be the only software in the universe that can change your drive letters around. I tried changing the drive letters through something in Windows DOS in Windows Recovery but that didn't work on the reboot. Supposedly, the Partition Magic CD itself is bootable, but to create a bootable CD from scratch it's a downright nightmare.

my Windows 7 recently quit assigning drive letters automatically. I frequently plug in new hard drives to the system using various USB to IDE or SATA adapters and now when I plug in a new hard drive with any of these USB adapters, it does not get a drive letter assigned to the volumes on the drive. If I go to Disk Management, the drives show up, and so do their partitions, and I can manually assign a drive letter to it, but this gets rather tedious. Any idea why it quit doing it automatically and how to get it to automatically assign drive letters once again?? I figured maybe it ran out of letters, so I went in the registry to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMMountedDevices and deleted all the remembered drive letter assignments in there, but that didn't help any.

I have a toolbar on my taskbar titled "Programs". It has about eight folders in it. I made another toolbar, and placed it directly adjacent to the Programs toolbar, to obscure the eight folders and force it to be a dropdown menu.Trouble is, as soon as I lock my taskbar, right next to the arrow that displays the eight items of my Programs toolbar in menu-form, one of the eight items is showing up as an icon, as if the other toolbar isn't close enough to the Programs toolbar in order to completely obscure the eight items.

Been using Transferer to move photos from my cameras via USB to my computer (64-bit Windows 7 Home Premium SP1), but Transferer stopped working suddenly because it requires drive letters for the camera cards, which no longer appear in Windows Explorer, which does show the cameras listed as drives but without drive letters. I can transfer photos manually. My cameras don't seem to have a mass storage mode.
