Drive Letters Change When Swapping Hard Drives?

Sep 30, 2012

I have two 1TB drives, each containing 4 partitions, used for backing up 4 computers. These drives are regularly switched between buildings as part of our backup strategy, always having one off-site. I have assigned drive letters M,N,O,P to respective partitions. When I swap the drives, the drive letters get reset and have to be manually reassigned. assigning the drive letters, including USBDM, but get no results.

Naming External Hard Drives With Permanent Drive Letters?

Apr 16, 2011

I am using 3 external hard drives and noticed a couple of times there drive letters have changed. Maybe I have had them unplugged for some reason I cannot remember, but it causes confusion with some files that use shortcuts. I would like to know if it is possible to give the drives permanent drive letters also change there names?

Disk Management No Longer Automatically Assigning Drive Letters To External Usb Hard Drives

Aug 14, 2011

I use a lot of different usb hard drives in my shop. I have two basic enclosures, a generic one that uses pata drives on a usb 2.0 cable and an Apricon USB SATA 2.0 adapter.Suddenly when I plug in a new drive device manager does see the drive and installs it in device manager. I can see the drive in Disk Management but it has no drive letter assigned, and therefore doesn't show up in Computer. I can easily just assign a letter in Disk Management and the drive immediately becomes usable. However, I would like to get Windows 7 to resume automatically assigning a drive letter.

I have tried a program called USB DriveCleanup. What it appears to have done is remove all installations of prior USB drives and when I plug in a drive that has been in the machine previously it then goes thru the install again. Yet still no drive letter. I think the program is doing what would manually be done by going into safe mode and cleaning out all the entries that build up there that don't appear in normal mode, then removes them. Basically it seems like a shortcut to manually doing it.

I also tried a registry fix that essentially asked me to delete the upper and lower filters. This seems similiar to fix for CD/DVD drives that no longer appear in Computer. This fix also didn't work.I tried removing and reinstalling the chipset drivers. Still no go.Running Windows 7 Pro SP1, H55 chipset.

Swapping A Hard Drive

May 21, 2009

I am writing this on a new build PC with Win 7 RC installed. The problem benig I installed a small spare HD, I have got so involved in learning Win 7 and liking what I'm seeing that I got it set up great but the HD is not the one I want to use.

My other internal HD of an other PC is much larger and the one I wish to use. I don't know how/the procedure in transferring my settings files, folders from the small to the larger HD.

I have every single folder, file, emails and so on backed up on an external HD, so once larger internal HD is up and running I could restore/transfer my files/folders/e-mails/favorites that way but what about settings.

The larger HD as yet does not have Win 7 RC installed and this will have to be done first. I do not wish to partion the larger HD yet.

There are possible several effective ways to transfer everything, settings and so on from the small to the large but need the procedure explained, simple works best with me.

Or would it simply be best to install Win 7 on big HD and then transfer/restore, files, folders and so from the external back up HD.

Win 7 OEM Hard Drive Swapping

Feb 22, 2010

Well as everyone using Windows RC knows, it'll be shutting down every hour or so starting in a week or so.

I've been looking at two different options. First option was to use Ubuntu 9.1.0 though I have no experience with it. Thing is I game a little and wanted to run games also. I looked into using Wine yet its not always guaranteed.

Second option was to do a clean install of Windows 7 using an OEM copy for far less than retail. Also, thing is..I might be receiving a new computer from school and was wondering how it would work out if I installed the Windows 7 OEM to this hard drive then swapped it out to the new computer. I heard you cannot change anything once the OEM is installed without calling Microsoft. Would it be possible to swap out the hard drive and put it into my new machine?

Swapping Out Hard Drive From HP To Dell

Dec 31, 2011

The hard drive in my friends Dell Inspiron 15R (M501R/M5010) needs to be replaced. I have access to an older HP pavillion hard drive with identical specs (SATA, 5400 rpm, 9.4mm/70mm, etc.). Before I spend a few hours taking apart the inspiron to get to the hard drive which is not easily accessible, I want to make sure the two hard drives are interchangeable, and that there won't be any HP vs. Dell compatibility issues.

Mapped Network Drives Without Drive Letters?

May 25, 2011

I have the problem of a long list of redundant mapped network drives without drive letters, for example, documents, documents~1, documents~2, etc. all with same location...right clicking on the mapped does not present any "disconnect" option.Oh, they do not appear as mapped network drives under "My Computer," but under "Network" and the name of the computer (which is on a wireless network with another computer)...I can go to advanced sharing and stop sharing, but then all folders are unshared including the original...I guess this may be the only way of getting this corrected, but it seems like a long way to do something that should be very simple..

Change The Drive Letters Without Entering Into Windows 7?

Aug 8, 2011

I encountered a pretty bad error, but I feel like it's only because when transferring over my system image it did so by going from C --> to D. I've spent hours Google searching and burning bootable discs to no avail. What I've found out is that Partition Magic seems to be the only software in the universe that can change your drive letters around. I tried changing the drive letters through something in Windows DOS in Windows Recovery but that didn't work on the reboot. Supposedly, the Partition Magic CD itself is bootable, but to create a bootable CD from scratch it's a downright nightmare.

Cannot Change Boot Priority Among Hard Drives?

Aug 12, 2011

Originally I had a small solid-state hard drive on this set up. I added a non-solid-state hard drive later. Recently, my solid-state drive, the C Dr., became too full to upgrade certain software programs such as Dragon NaturallySpeaking. I purchased a second solid-state hard drive.I "mirrored" that second solid-state hard drive. To make sure that Windows was operating appropriately, I rebooted and hit F10. I then showed the new solid-state hard drive. Everything booted perfectly and the new solid-state hard drive was noted as the C Dr.When I rebooted into bios to change the hard drive boot order so that the new second solid-state hard drive would be the first in the priority, when I highlighted it and exited from it,it still showed the original solid-state hard drive as the first hard drive.I have never had this problem before. I now have to go into F10 every time I boot into my computer and highlight the new solid-state hard drive.

Hard-drives Apparently Corrupted After Attempted To Install A Second Hard Drive?

Oct 8, 2011

make a dualboot comp by adding windows XP to a new partition. I created the new partition with 20gb. (From the 500 of my actual harddrive)But before I actually installed on that, I got distracted with a second harddrive that my dad got(for no reason). It had a full copy of Windows XP backed up on it from another computer, so I figured I would just use that for the dualboot. I plugged it in (wired the same way as my old harddrive, but different data slot), restarted, checked the harddrive in explorer - all the data was there / reading correctly / etc, and I used 'easyBCD' to add the new harddrive to the boot list.(Which, of course, crashes if I try to start it. I just wanted to see what it would do). For a reason I can't remember, I unplugged the second harddrive for a bit, started the computer on accident (I don't know if anything loaded before I shut it off), and then when I plugged it back in.Windows 7 would not launch. It goes to a DOS-like window, except it's just a flashing _ and it never does anything even after a few minutes. XP didn't work still.. so I decided to reinstall XP (as I couldn't tell which harddrive was which on the list, I unplugged the main harddrive while installing onto the new).. and when I did this.. it formatted and installed fully... then restarted.. then restarted.. and restarted.. and just kept restarting, never showing any thing past the manufacturer logo/BIOS load-button-message-thing. So, I then try to use my 3-disk Windows7Recovery disk(burned myself with a program apparently included by the manufacturer.) It installed fully, appearing to work.. but when I launched it, it said "Invalid Partition Table" and wouldn't boot past that. When I insert my driver installer disk, it gives me a basic DOS window thing. dir A: shows the files in the disk. dir B: for some reason shows the same. C: says "Error reading from drive C: DOS area: general failure". All other letter:'s just say "invalid drive". (I'm doing this with both harddrives in.) I attempted connecting the harddrives to an old computer, but it gave an error for both. (It detected the harddrives, but said it had an error reading from it. Windows Explorer asked me to format it... {i'm willing to format one of the drives if anybody thinks it will help, but the old harddrive has data I'd prefer not to lose.} ) Looking on google, I saw several problems that all have similar problems (less overdescripptive than I am though) but none of the fixes suggested worked for me. Also - as I have two different with different errors, I only need to make one of them work.)Also - my other available computer has a CD burner / floppy drive if either are required. I also have several USB's. The computer can boot from USB's and CD's (tested), and I could easily take the floppy thingy and connect it to the computer.also - this computer is probably still under warranty unless unscrewing the hard drive voids it. .. does that count as modification of the computer?

Can SSD Kill Other Drives - Hard Drive Failed SMART Error ?

Feb 4, 2012

I upgrade my pc with SSD everything seem to go fine but 2 of my 2TB drive giving me a Smart error now. i wonder if SSD has anything to do with Drives failing. My theory is that.

SSD runs on a flash based chip ... it is very stable but mean time it has huge access point of data that why it is fast. The reason i am thinking that SSD is killing my other drives is because my setup is a Media center. Software such as windows media center and media browser keep accessing my 2 TB Hitachi drive for movies, TV show and so on .. SSD in my opinion is running other drive to max point of spin and read/write in same time. which could caused these drive either over heat or over used that is just a theroy of mine

MY Setup : Media center pc with 4 2TB Hard drive Hitachi and 1 60GB SSD drive

Error Message: Smart error bad backup and replace

External Hard Drive - Drive Letter Changed - Unable To Change Back?

Aug 21, 2012

I have a USB external hard drive that I keep all my documents etc on (had it for years)I upgraded from Vista Home to & Home Premium then had to upgrade recently to Professional to run my Sage. Through all these upgrades my ext. drive ran fine. Occasionally the drvie letter would change if I had something else plugged into the USB, this was always easily corected in disk management by changing the drive path. The connection on the case packed up so I had to get the drive put into a new case, now when I plug it in the drive is assigned G instead of F, I tried to change the drive letter allocation in Disk Management but it won't let me as the program still thinks I have a second ext. hard drive which is labelled F. I suspect this has happened because when the usb connection broke the drive was disconnected suddenly instead of a proper eject. How do I get Disk Management to remove the inactive drive - i can't find any obvious way - eject, delete etc are all missing when I click on tools or tasks.

Change Letter Designating Hard Drive (V:)?

Dec 28, 2012

I have built a computer for video editing and named the hard drives (C for the main drive, (M for the drive holding my music, (P for the drive for photos, and I named the drive to store my videos (V. However when I tried to write path to the V: drive I was told V: is an invalid path, I suppose because of the confusion with a followed by a / which would give you a / which can be confused with V but is not exactly the same. I went to My Computer and right clicked on the V: drive and clicked on "rename" in the drop down menu and changed the name to "Storage" but the (V persisted. Then I renamed again and named the drive "Storage (S" and now in "My Computer" the drive is shown as "Storage (S (V" When writing a path to put videos on this drive can I use either S:/ or V:/ to get videos into this drive?
