Delete Computer From Domain / Delete Users Profile
Oct 29, 2009
I need to replace a W2K computer on a domain with a Windows 7 computer(laptop), but I want to keep the same computer name.I need the ip, username, profile to stay the same. Can I delete the computer from the domain and name the new computer that name I deleted and still keep the users profile on the new machine, as if it was the old one?

Some time ago after installing Windows 7 on my computer, I added a domain name (don't ask me why - I was just fiddling around ). Now, I cannot delete it. From my dos commands, when I do a pathping, I get Rick-PC.mydomain.net and I want to get rid of the domain part of it since no one else has that domain.
We all log in here on our computers not from any domain controller. We share an Internet pipe and a simple file server.
I have tried going in through Computer|Properties|, under computer name - 'Change Settings' under "To rename this computer click Change" [Change], and under [More] where it states a DNS suffix, it is blank.

I have a Lenovo T61 that I upgraded to Windows 7 Ultimate from Vista Ultimate. Wireless networking works fine except for one profile that was used in Vista. When I try to connect to that particular site, the network attempts connect but always fail. The network trys to connect to a profile that was previously used in this situation, however the properties indicate Windows Vista. I believe if I could delete the profile, a new one would be created and connection could be made.
The problem is: I cannot delete the profile. I cannot locate it on the system. The only time it appears is when trying to connect to this particular site. A text file is generated when I use the troubleshooter. Read more at the forum...

We have the GPO setup at our company which deletes a copy of local profile after 1 day. All our PC are XP Windows 7 What we are finding is for some reason on log off or on startup it is trying to delete a profile but cant and event viewer show errors either with event code 1533 or 1530 Description:Windows cannot delete the profile directory C:Users<username>. This error may be caused by files in this directory being used by another program. DETAIL - The directory is not empty.When it cant delete the profile it the goes to put a local copy of the profile in the users folder as username.001, .002 etc All that is left is a couple of empty folders. (each time the folders are different) the are no security on this folder and they can be delete manually. Now i did google this and i know this is quite a know issue with the profiles not always being delete. I know about the tools used like uphclean etc which help with this problem alot of people face but its there a permanant fix for this or is this just typical behaviour that we all must live with?

It has been a month now since installing Windows 7. Everything appears to be fine except this "access denied" errors on some of the files for certain users. I finally managed to turn on the hidden "administrator" feature in command prompt to unlock some. Aside from the design of users potentially "locking" themselves out of their own documents ( because of they are not logged in as an Admin, even though they have all admin privileges. I was going around in circles giving each other permission when the real admin was never enabled.
Now its effecting the programs and installation. For example, if Daddy logs on and try to install a program that requires a command prompt, I can't because I did not log in as an Admin. Now we have 3 separate users, each with their own documents, programs, and desktop settings.I want to delete all users and combine all the docs, programs, etc. Into one easy access and one user. No passwords, nothing. So as soon the computer boots up windows, it should ready to go, everything.

We have removed a computer from the domain because of some network issues.When we logged in to the computer as a local administrator we've noticed that the user folder of the domain user who was previously logged to that computer was almost empty(except for the appdata folder).When we joined the pc back in the domain the computer made a new profile.Unfortunaly the user did save some documents on his dekstop in the old profile.

I have a multi-users Windows 7 (64bits) system, with one Administrator priviledge accounts, the others being non-admin. Disk is partition with system on C and data on D and E.
All users can access to D and E.
How to enforce security properties so that delete file or folder on D or E must prompt for admin password? I see that I can totally prevent DELETE, but I just want to permit delete, when user successfully entered admin pwd on prompt.
If I right-click on D: Then properties and view security tab, I see 4 groups:
* Authentified users
* System
* the admin account
* users (the admin account as user)

I have this really annoying file in my library on windows 7 and I can't seem to delete it. I've tried the traditional ways of deleting it, dragging it to the the recycling bin, renaming it, copying and pasting it somewhere else and then trying, using software programs called "Unlcocker" and "CCleaner", and even going into the CMD prompt of my computer attempting to remove it from there; side note...(I'm not the best at using CMD commands and navigating through there, so maybe I've missed something). Ive also tried to run chkdisk command to see if it was some sort of registry error and I've also tried safe boot mode to see if I could simply delete it that way. The problem with this file is that my computer cant seem to find it on my hard-drive, its like the file doesn't exists, its just a icon in my pictures document.

So I had an issue with our windows 2000 server and took it off the network. Won't get into that right now. I ended up just setting up a workgroup for the time being until something can be done about the server. Three computers running windows 7 were pulled from the domain and put on the workgroup with no difference to the user profile. The desktop and all local data stayed the same. But for the 4th computer when it left the domain and restarted it had a new local profile and has a new desktop with all the data from the domain profile gone. My question: is it possible to either get a copy of the data from the domain profile, which I don't see under user accounts and can't switch to it as a different user, or to do a system restore to before leaving the domain then copy the data? The biggest issue is the loss of the pst file and a few files on the desktop that were not backed up recently. Is there anything I can do to get that data?

I had users passing around a computer that ended up with a bunch of settings being screwed up which made me want to deny all regular domain users but not administrators. I did this as a local group policy on the computer under gpedit where i denied users and to my horrifying experience no users can log in, not even local admin.

I have the same issue the other user mentions. I can log on as a domain admin, but not as a domain user. There are only 4 profiles in the registry, with no .bak extensions:
1 is the default user
2 is the localservice account
3 is the networkservice account
4 is the local "Administrator" account
I was assuming the problem was with the default user, so I followed the article previously mentioned, and changed the RefCount from "1" to "0", and the State was already set to "0". I am still unable to log in with any domain account except for domain administrators.

I work in and oversee the computer network of a small architecture office. We only have 6 or 7 users right now, and about 12-14 active machines throughout the office. All machines connect through our office domain to our server box running Windows Server 2003 x86. Most production machines are now running Windows 7 x64, but there are a few XP x86 machines still left in the office. Everyone logs onto their machine using their username and password, which is set up in Active Directory Users and Computers on the server. Each username has a login script associated with it that maps various shared folders on the server as network drives on the workstations.
Right now, each user's workstation has that username set up as an Administrator account on that machine. I know that's not recommended, but it's been okay so far. However as time passes, I'm getting more and more concerned about network and computer security.
I'd like to know if there's a way to set up user accounts such that it won't ask for an Admin user name and password every time a program needs an update, but also doesn't allow them full access like Admins have, i.e. deleting software and such.
The issue is that I don't want to have to run around and enter an admin user name and password on the Windows 7 machines every time some software update appears or the user needs to install some software on a machine. We're a small office and don't rely on any actual IT department. I have many other responsibilities in the architecture field (working drawing production, project management, etc) and don't have time to always do that, especially when I'm out of the office on a jobsite, etc.

DC: Win Server 2003
Laptops: Win7 Pro
When joining a set of laptops to the domain it prompts for domain admin credentials and appears to be successful, but gives an error of 'Changing the Primary Domain DNS name of this computer to " " failed. The name will remain domain.local The error was: The RPC Server is unavailable.
When attempting to add Domain Users to the local administrators group: Windows cannot process the object with the name "domain users" because of the following error: The RPC server is unavailable.
This happens even when wired on the network. I have tried uncommenting the localhost line in HOSTS, and manually adding the DNS server (which is also the DC).
