View 3 Replies View RelatedI recently installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my HP Mini 110-1116NR, then deleted the partitions that had Ubuntu on them, not knowing that Ubuntu comes with GRUB2, and sets itself as the default boot for that system. Now that GRUB2 is not installed, since it was on my only HDD, it looks for the GRUB2 partition, which does not exist.

I have ordered a new computer with 2TB SATA disk. The first step I must do is to partition a disk.As far as I have been reading tutorials on this site it is recommended to separate Windows/ programs and Documents into separate partitions. So I am going to create C- partition for Windows and Program Files of about 100MB.What about the other partitions. Is it worth to create separate partitions for say for "Images", "Documents", "Development Projects". Or is it better to put all this stuff into one partition? Advantage of multiple partitions, as I see, would be more flexibility for backup/recovery. From the other side, disadvantage of multiple partitions would be not optimal usage of disk space.
View 9 Replies View RelatedLast night one of my friends was "guiding" me through an installation for Ubuntu to a flash drive. I was doing it on my current computer. I removed some partitions from the installation thinking it would just remove them from the list, I then tried to install it on the flash drive. (I also changed some of the NTFS FAT 32's around and stuff, But i don't know what that means)It then brought me to a black screen with a blinking underscore.After doing everything below, it now says Missing operating system.So I might have made things worse.I have tried the recovery Cd which I burned off of another windows7 computer, I tried bootrec.exe as well.I'm not entirely sure what to do at this point. I am currently using the same computer, but on the trail version - "try ubuntu" of ubuntu. All of my files seem to be intact. Also, when I ran one of the recovery options it had a box for listed OS's and none displayed, it also said select drivers to install to disk and brought me to system32. (I had no idea what to look at, at that point)I also did.Nothing seems to be working and I'm out of ideas and running short on time to get my work done.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI found out that the partition size exceeded the roughly 200Gig (approximately or less - from running Vista on two machines). I was not sure if the maximum partition size was dependent upon the operating system or the motherboard chip-set.I ended up crashing my original ATA 133 500 gig drive on the C: partition. The drive was an ATA drive and my plan is to install a Blu-Ray / DVD RW drive. Currently I have a DVD Read Write installed and it wouldn't hurt to keep both of the optical drives on the motherboard's ATA pins.This will delegate the 500 gig Maxtor drive to a USB backup or possibly for my PS3. This leaves the 1TB drive and a couple of questions.1) I intend to partition the 1TB drive in into 2 partitions. This is to prevent the loss of the entire partition (as what happened to the ATA drive) and protecting the second partition for downloads and backups. For a reasonable price I can add another (up to 8) SATA drive[s] and rather than use them to automatically copy the other SATA, I will add additional storage.(2) The mainboard was made for compatibility with Vista (another question). Am I correct in assuming that the MSI CoreCell(tm) nForce 570 Chipset board with an AM2 AMD Athlon(tm) 64/FX/X2 Processors and 2 Gig or ram will not operate properly (true multitasking) with Windows 7 Home Premium (64 bit) operating system. View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a MSI K9N Platinum mainboard with 2-Gig of ram (chosen so that I can over-clock the board if I choose). I have the NVIDIA 570 Chipset with an AM2 AMD Athlon(tm) processor. I had it set up with a 128-Gig partition that I set up when I had Vista Professional (64-bit) installed. A year ago or so I upgraded to Windows 7 Home which worked out much better (even if the mainboard was pre-Windows 7). I installed a PNY Nvidia 210 video board (but am having some trouble getting the driver to work with Windows 7).
My main harddrive is a Maxtor 500-Gig ATA drive that is partitioned with 128-Gig for the C: drive which was the maximum I could use at the time with Vista Pro. I also have a 1TB SATA drive installed for data storage and another 1TB Seagate USB drive for media storage. There is also another 1TB backup drive (Maxtor) connected to my Fios Router.I am having problems with the 500-Gig ATA C: drive - bad sectors or corrupted data. I've isolated most of the data but can't remove it. I need to keep the computer up and working and have wasted enough time with the bad drive.
I want to use the SATA drive installed on the MSI mainboard. Can you tell me what the largest partition size I can have to install Windows 7 Home (assuming I can remove it from my main hard drive on this machine before or after to allow a new installation). I use the primary drive mostly for program installation although Windows 7 generally places all of the libraries on the same drive as a default. If it won't slow me down, I would like to use as much of the 1TB SATA drive as possible. Is there a maximum partition size that I need if I convert the SATA drive to replace the C: drive or boot drive?

Does someone know why Windows7 needs two partitions, and whether it's possible to have a single partition?

When I go into the Windows 7 installation, this is what I see:
Extend and new are grayed out, and even in disk management, there is no unallocated space.
Can somebody please guide me into partitioning this hard drive. I've searched and the only answers I find are for dual boot setups. Partition Magic is not supported by Vista (.: 7 as well).

After done resizing and restart i can't see any D partition. so i was worried that my data will disappeared. i try to look for it but there is no Drive D even on the easeus or diskpart. the only drive appears was C Drive.i remove my Linux Mint and its swap (60gb) and thinking that i could get some more free space and do some cmd prompt windows 7 repair fixmbr thing to remove the grub. then i use partition recovery to transfer those missing data from partition D to C Drive. I deleted the Ubuntu 10.04 partition in windows computer management/disk management. Then i shut down the computer, upon booting up i was greeted with an grub error and unable to boot into windows. I used super grub disk, now windows boots up fine now. I'm left with this now, three other partitions and a 218gb of free space. How can i allocate my free space (218gb) to my C: drive? I right click my C: drive but the extend volume is grayed out. Only the Shrink volume is selectable.

Even-though i have a working antivirus I get frequent pop-ups saying "threat detected". I'm tired with deleting those viruses. so decided to restore system from OEM partition to get rid of all those viruses. before installing ubuntu I had a single partition (c:), then i made it into two partitions one for ubuntu clean install. now if I restore my system to factory settings from OEM of windows7 will the partition of ubuntu get formatted or deleted?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a small query about this whole partitioning business. I'm trying to set up a partition so I can dual-boot Windows 7 and Ubuntu.
My computer came with a Dell Recovery partition and an OEM partition as well as the main C: drive, which are all primaries. I've created a new logical drive, which I've called Z:, with the idea being to install the Linux OS in that chunk of the drive.
My first question: First up, I've formatted it as "exFAT" - is this the same as FAT32?
Next question: can I divide this 'Z' into smaller chunks with different formats, or do they all have to be the same format? I was hoping to be able to format a small bit of the drive into a Linux file-system so that both OSs can be kept entirely separate from each other, but leave the bulk of it as FAT so that I can see my files with both OSs. If this is not possible, what would be the best way to achieve the desired result?

View 3 Replies View RelatedSo the other day I decided that I wanted to try dual-booting Ubuntu 10.04 on my HP Pavilion dv7-4083cl Entertainment Notebook that already had Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit installed. I shrank the main (biggest) partition by 100Gigs and then installed Ubuntu 10.04 on that 100Gigs of unallocated space. All worked fine, except when I tried to boot Windows 7 from the grub menu, it would come up to the beginning Windows 7 animation and then it would crash. So, I downloaded a Windows 7 Recovery CD and tried a few of the tools there. I did not create a system recover image prior to my troubles, so I could not recover the easy way.
After that, I tried the Startup Repair tool, which did not work. I read somewhere to try that Startup Repair tool 2 or 3 times, which I did. The third time, it seemed to freeze; it was "working" for about 6 hours, at which point I decided that it was enough and shut down the PC. That was a mistake... From that point forward, I still could not boot into Windows, but also every time I tried to boot into Ubuntu, I had to perform a disk check, which always failed! After trying that a few times, I had had enough yet again and decided to just reinstall Ubuntu. The install seemed to work fine, but once I rebooted I could not boot into Ubuntu (or Windows 7). No matter what option I select from the grub menu (or if I push F11 to go into recovery partition), it gives me an error that says "Error: No such partition" and dumps me into a grub rescue prompt...
After releasing multiple bouts of turrets, I tried booting from my Ubuntu LiveUSB again (same one I installed Ubuntu with twice) and ran Gparted to look at my partitions. It only showed me the one 100Gig partition and said the remaining ~350Gigs were unallocated! So now I'm stuck with no bootable operating system (on my HD), and to top it off, HP just sent me their "official" recovery disks that are trying to reformat my HD and erase all my data...
I know there has to be a way to restore my partitions and replace the grub bootloader with the Windows 7 bootloader. At this point I don't care about Ubuntu at all. All of my data was on the Windows 7 partition (which I cannot access from Ubuntu to grab it).
I can provide any information that you need, but remember that I can only do so via either BIOS or by booting Ubuntu from the LiveUSB. I cannot access Windows 7. I also do not have a Windows 7 install disk as this was a refurbished HP laptop that I bought from Costco...
I used to have a seperate Linux Partition on my Hard Drive.I no longer use Linux and uninstalled the Ubuntu Operating System from the partition and re formatted the partition in windows, but when i go to the Hard Drive Partitioning Utility with Windows wont allow me to re expand my main partition to include the other, now empty NTFS formatted, partition.

1. How much space should I leave for ubuntu's partition?
2. How do I make a swap partition (or whatever it is called, for swapping files between OS's)?
3. Can I set it up to automatically boot into windows unless I am holding down a specific key, or something similar?
BTW, my HDD is ~500gb, but my current (factory) windows partition is 450gb.
I'm thinking of installing the RC of Windows 7 when it is released tomorrow. But there is one thing that is worrying me. When I go to install 7, i have read that it creates a 200mb partition. On my Acer laptop, there are already 4 paritions, a 9.76GB which does not show up as a drive, a 69.77GB which is labeled as 'ACER', a 66.27GB which is labeled 'DATA' and then a 3.24GB partition which again does not show up as a drive.I know that there is a recovery partition built in, will this 200mb parition affect them? I will be installing (using the upgrade) on to 69.77 Partition, or will it just spilt the 69.77 partition into two?
