Difference Between Primary, Extended, Logical Partition

Nov 24, 2009

Windows 7 is coming pre-installed on my new PC from Dell. It has two 500GB HDDs.

I want to partition the first drive into just a couple of partitions. I guess I will have to shrink the main partition to about 100GB for the OS and apps.

But my question is: that partition with the OS and apps will be a 'primary' one...what will my next couple of partitions be? Logical? Extended?

I'm not sure how to decide what type of partitions to have.

Setup Was Unable To Create A New System Partition Or Locate An Existing System Partition - Installation Error

Dec 28, 2011

I have my HP Laptop which came with Windows Vista as the OS. I want to upgrade to Windows 7 so I bought Windows 7 from my local store.I entered the disc and did boot from CD. It reached to the page where it shows the disk partition. I deleted the partitions and created new one. However, whenever I create the partition, it creates a primary one and gives me error saying Setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition.

How To Create An Extended Partition With Logical Drives ?

Nov 14, 2009

Just new here, i am right now installing my new-built PC with Windows 7 Enterprise.

Unfortunately, i have already some problems. My hard drive is a 1 TB WD and on setup i made a primary partition of 50 GB for Windows 7. I thought to partition the rest afterwards and there is the problem. The installation went without any problem, but in diskmanager i cannot see the option as i saw in XP to choose between a primary or an extended partition.

I wanted to make a large extended partition of the unallocated space and then divide it into some logical drives to hold my programs, pictures & films,... etc. As Windows 7 makes primary partition always i am limited to 4 partitions and that is not enough.

"setup Was Unable To Create A New System Partition Or Locate An Existing Partition"

Jun 8, 2011

A friend has asked me to install Widows 7 on a friends laptop which has XP. The laptop doesn't have a DVD drive (no drive at all) so I've had to stick the installer on a USB stick from disc using a program. The USB boots up fine on the laptop, just like a disc. I formatted 2 partitions (same drive) and tried to install windows 7 but I get this error:"setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing partition"So now, I have someone else's laptop with no OS. The owner is a 70 year old computer illiterate man.i'm planning on trying to install Vista instead and if successful, upgrade to 7. I would have upgraded in the 1st place, but P can't be directly upgraded to 7.

Unable To Create A New System Partition Or Locate An Existing System Partition

Aug 13, 2012

I have a copy of windows 7 from a friend. (USB, possibly enterprise)It runs well, is official and can be re installed and is verified through the Microsoft site, so the media doesn't seem to be a problem.I was able to install Win7 Ult x64 on my WinVista HomePrem x86, but I went back through to clean the hard drive (it was full, I didn't format before) and after low level formatting I cannot reinstall the OS. The harddrives are completely empty, and I get stuck at "Setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition," after hitting next when you are selecting the HD partition to install on. I tried a couple of things already:

-Installing on another harddrive
-Formatting using Hiren's bootcd
-Using a hard drive with XP installed to see if it is an upgrade and not a full version (no luck, still wouldn't install)
-diskpart > list disk > select disk 0 > list partition > active \ in cmd..I have three hard drives attached to the computer right now, they can't all be broken. T.T

4GB USB - Won't Create Partition Primary?

May 28, 2011

kay I am trying to make bootable USB so I can reinstall my Windows 7, but when I get to the step to create partition primary, it tells me there is insufficient space to do so. What's up with that? I really need to get my laptop back working before the 14th, because I am going up to my grandparents' house for the summer and would like to bring my laptop with me. I also don't want them to find out I broke it so...heh.Also, I've tried burning the ISO to a 4GB DVD disk with ImgBurn but every disk I do gives me an error, and I only have 3 DVDs left and I don't want to try again because I don't want to waste them. I actually just went out to buy this USB so I'm really upset that I'm having issues with it

Create A New Primary Partition At End Of Drive

Nov 20, 2009

Here's the scenario: I have a 1TB disk with several partitions on it.

#1: Primary partition with Vista on it.

#2: A 500GB primary partition used as storage/backup.

#3: A 50GB partition encrypted with Truecrypt, Logical drive

Now, I want to create a new Primary partition at the end of the drive, so I can install another copy of Windows 7. Notice my 500GB storage partition does not need to be Primary, but it is, and I cannot create any more Primary partitions. How can I change the storage partition to a logical drive, and have my new partition be Primary?

Setup Unable To Create New System Partition Or Locate Existing One

Jul 15, 2010

So I used to have vista, xp, and mac on my pc. After a while xp screwed up and left me with only vista and mac. My school handed out a bunch of software including windows 7. I saved the installer and key on my desktop and pretty much just left it there for two months. Eventually my vista crashed and could have only used mac. After a very short while my mac crashed to. I saved my key on a piece of paper but unfortunately I lost the installer.

This morning I found a iso, burnt it on another computer and popped it in. Everything was fine until I was asked where I want windows to be installed. Due to the fact that I tried to fix vista from dos, my hard drive configuration got messed up. Regardless of that I didn't care because everything was backed up on a external so I tried to format all of my hard drives and then instal windows. "Setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition." What am I supposed to do?

"Setup Was Unable To Create A New System Partition Or Locate Existing"

Aug 13, 2012

Last night after 8 hours of toil, I finally completed a clean install using a usb drive on my asus ux32vd using the brand new SSD drive I had just bought. The reason it took so long was I kept getting this error -> "Setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition." What I did to finally get it to install was get to the c prompt during the installation and run diskpart and make the integrated 32GB SSD 'offline' and then I selected the SSD and used the 'clean' command and left the SSD unpartitioned and raw. I had read that with SSDs on a clean install you should leave it raw and windows will install on it. And it worked. Now here's problem number 2, which feels worse than problem number 1. After installing everything went swimmingly. I started updating drivers, etc. I got to the point where I needed to do a Windows Update. There were 91 things that needed to be updated/installed. So I ran update with all 91 and that went fine until it went to restart - it wouldn't boot into windows. Instead it kept going into that startup restoration program over and over saying it couldn't fix the problem. I tried to delete the updates manually through cprompt by running dism, but this failed and I figured to hell with the hassle I'll just reinstall Windows since I know how now and then update windows one update at a time. BIG MISTAKE. I tried doing EXACTLY what I had done before - doing diskpart, offlining the integrated SSD, etc - however this time the error isn't going away. It's still saying "Setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition." I don't get it. I'm doing exactly what I did when I got it to work, but it's not working now. I can only surmise that the system is still recognizing the integrated SSD somehow.

Missing Partition And Unallocated Space (Can't Create New Partition)?

Jul 1, 2010

I'm using Compaq Presario CQ40-627TUMy Laptop SpecIntel Dual Core Processor T4400 (2.2GHz, 80Mhz FSB,1 MB L2 Cache)- 2048MB 800MHz DDR2 Memory- 320GB 7200rpm Hard Disk Drive- 14.1' TFT WXGA High-Definition widescreen LCD panel with brightviewtechnologynd i'm using windows 7 Ultimate on boot system partition C, dual boot with linux mint. which mean i got four partition. one for linux mint. one for its swap space. one for windows 7. one for my data storage(movies,drivers,mp3,picture and etc).last few days i try to resize my C partition (120gb) to make it smaller to gain some unallocated spaces and resize the D partition because my D (almost 100gb) (ntfs/primary/data storage) almost full. i use easeus partition master v5.01.

After done resizing and restart i can't see any D partition. so i was worried that my data will disappeared. i try to look for it but there is no Drive D even on the easeus or diskpart. the only drive appears was C Drive.i remove my Linux Mint and its swap (60gb) and thinking that i could get some more free space and do some cmd prompt windows 7 repair fixmbr thing to remove the grub. then i use partition recovery to transfer those missing data from partition D to C Drive. (appears as unformatted)i try to use partition wizard home to resize it back to 300gb. and it works. but i cant make a partition. it will disappear just like that.i also try to use diskpart, command prompt diskpard, and paragon. but also not working. the C drive was shrink but theres no unallocated space and no D drive (the new create partition). i try logical partition, primary, ntfs and fat but also not working. even the unallocated space also gone. i use almost 4 3rd party partitioning software but still got no luck with it.example:i divide 300gb into 2 partition which exist the C partition 150Gb but the other one gone. i wish theres other way than format. i also done many time. doing check disk, partition table doctor, searching for bad sector. but no errors with my hdd.

Make Win 7 Primary Partition

May 21, 2009

At the end of each semester, I typically restore my primary laptop (Asus G1S) to the factory default settings. I realize that this isn't technically necessary, but there's something psychologically pleasing about a freshly installed operating system. It's somewhat like returning to a hotel room in the afternoon after the maid has tidied up. The bed is made, the bathroom is stocked with clean towels, and the free water bottles have been replenished.

I'm currently downloading the Windows Seven installation files, and have been reading through various guides. Many writers recommend partitioning one's hard drive to permit a dual boot. However, since I've just restored my system completely, I would rather just turn the entire thing over to Windows 7 without any Vista remnants clogging up the machine. If things go south, I can always unpack the restore disks and revert to the factory default state.

Is this advisable and possible? Can I completely wipe out Windows Vista and turn my machine entirely over to Windows 7?

C Drive Or Partition Lists As Primary?

I just got my laptop back from Acer and they had given me a new hard drive. I restored a disk image backup that I had made from Acronis True Image. The backup seemed a little strange going in, but none the less it worked anyway. I then went to Disk Management to look at the setup and noticed that my primary partition is now listed as a Logical. I'm posting a screen shot of the partions and someone tell me if that looks right to them and if not how do I get my C drive back to Primary. As I said it boots ok but when I did the recovery with Acronis it didn't seem to go as smoothly as it should have.

Shrinking The Primary Windows Partition?

Feb 13, 2012

I'm trying to shrink my primary Windows partition because I want to create a partition to install Linux Mint on. Well, when I go into the Windows Disk Manager and try to shrink the partition, it doesn't let me shrink it more than 32MB. I need quite a bit more space than that.I've disabled System Restore, Hibernation, and the page file. After defragging, I had 200MB of space available to shrink with. That's not much of a step up.I also want to try to avoid third-party applications unless they're basically guaranteed to work. I've heard some horror stories about third-party partitioners completely ruining systems.

Chkdsk Failure Primary Partition

Oct 29, 2012

I noticed this problem when I tried to delete something off the drive, then I tried to run an antivirus scan and it gave me an error if incapacity to delete viruses due to a dirty disk and that I should run chkdsk. So I right clock on the drive and attempt check now. It tells me that it must first dismount the drive before it can do so and asks if I would like to force a dismount. To which I respond yes. Then, the window disappears and I hear no word or see no signs of any chkdsk happening. Naturally I reboot the terminal expecting fire-works and chemistry, but get greeted by the sound of windows starting up again.I have tried the administrator driven command prompt in this sequence. C:WindowsSystem32>chkdsk x:/f

response:
The type of file system is exFAT.
Volume Serial Number is 2C7E-22C5
C:WindowsSystem32>
then:
C:WindowsSystem32>chkdsk x:/r
response:
The type of the file system is exFAT.

Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Chkdsk May run if this volume is dismounted first. ALL OPENED HANDLES TO THIS VOLUME WOULD THEN BE INVALID. Would you like to force a dismount on this volume? <Y/N>
response:

Volume dismounted. ALL opened handles to this volume are now invalid.
Volume Serial Number is 2C7E-22C5
C:WindowsSystem32>
then:
C:WindowsSystem32>chkdsk x:/r

How To Recover A Primary Boot Partition ?

May 27, 2009

I have Windows XP64 and XP 2005 installed on adjacent partitions on an 80 GB IDE hard drive. I had been accustomed to using BIOS to choose the drive and EasyBCD to choose the OS. A few days ago I was unable to boot into this drive because I kept getting the error "NTLDR missing (press Ctrl-Alt-Del)." I tried using Microsoft's BCSetup2 (I think that's what it's called) but couldn't get a floppy disk to boot.

Being that there wasn't much on this hard drive, other than the Windows OS's, I decided to reinstall the Win64 on the first partition. I find now that EasyBCD does not install on my XP64, so evidently I must have had it installed on the XP MCE partition. I'm wondering now how I can go about accessing the MCE on that other partition, or finding or remaking the boot loader.
