Boots From A Different Drive Than OS Problem

Feb 11, 2010

yesterday I took out one of my 4 HDD's (I call it HDD -A-) to hookup on another PC and when I restarted my machine (where HDD -A- was in) it didn't boot. I already changed boot order in bios to the HDD -B- (win7). I always have to boot from HDD -A- to be able to boot HDD -B- win7. My question:

A few months back I booted from win7 CD and used repair and I think it put the bootsector/MBR/...?? on the wrong HDD. My HDD's are fine. No bad blocks.

Looking for simple solution without having to setup all again.

Windows Is Not Installed On The Drive From Which It Boots

Nov 29, 2011

I have 2 HDD, Disk0 and Disk1. Disk0 is supposed to have my personal data, Disk1 the OS. Disk0 has 3 partitions (H:/ I:/ J:/ ) and Disk1 has 3 partitions too (C:/ D:/ E:/ ).One month ago I installed Windows 7 but erased my Disk0 by mistake and probably (very unlikely though! see below) started installing on there when I realized something looked wrong, canceled, then formatted Disk1 and installed there, on the first partition (I blame the badly designed Windows installer, Linux does it better).Fortunately, I recovered my data from Disk0 (only partition tables must have got wiped out) after Windows 7 finished installing on Disk1 with a recovery tool.I'm about to format Disk0 now (at least the first partition) but I noticed something weird on my Disk0 (data) hard drive.I have system files, of which creation dates match the day I installed Windows 7 (and recovered my partitions too). Note: disregard found.000, that's a file chkdsk must have created back when I used WinXP or something.Note2: columns are "Date modified" and "Date Created", YY/MM/DD I'm new to Windows 7 but I'm guessing these system files I see here should be on my System drive, not another drive, right? Here is what I have on my C:/ where Windows 7 is installed:In such a case, will I have to either:

1) format C:/ and re-install Windows 7 ?
2) use recovery console and repair from there ?

why one drive (SATA) is Disk1 and the other (IDE) is Disk0. I had to fiddle in my BIOS to end up booting on the right one (which I suspect is Disk0!). If I ever had to remove my IDE HDD, would I end up not being able to boot Windows 7?Remark: I got suspicious of that when trying to encrypt my system drive with TrueCrypt and TC says it couldn't handle a system that "does not appear to be installed on the drive from which it boots".

How Do I Install Win7 On The Drive From Which It Boots ?

Feb 24, 2009

I want to encrypt my hard drive with TrueCrypt, but it comes up with an error saying that "Windows is not installed on the drive from which it boots". I just reinstalled Windows 7, so it wouldn't be a huge loss to install it again in the same day, but when I install it, how do I make Windows install on the boot drive? When it came up with the partition prompt, I formatted the partitions (there were two) and then deleted the partitions and made it all unallocated space. Should I put one partition on first?

Windows 7 Recovery Disk In The CD Drive, Attempted To Boot Up, But The CD Drive Just Spins And Spins But Never Boots?

May 29, 2012

My HP laptop HD crashed, am trying to replace it with a Kingston HyperX 120GB SSD. I do not have Windows installation disks, only have Windows Recovery Disks. All installation instructions I have found for SSD's is for cloning, which I cannot do since the HD is deadI have installed the SSD, booted into BIOS, this simple BIOS version doesn't allow me to change anything on the HD, but it does recognize it and let me do a HD test, so it does recognize the SSD. I then put the Windows Recovery disk in the CD drive, attempted to boot up, but the CD drive just spins and spins but never boots up. I thought the CD drive might be bad, so I tried an external USB CD drive with the Recovery disk, but it does the same (just spins). I even got a new Windows 7 installation disk (from another PC) to see if it will boot from it, but get nothing but a spinning CD I have not done anything yet to the HyperX SSD, haved not formatted or partitioned it.I thought this would be done by Recovery on the OS installationThe BIOS is set up to first boot from the CD drive, so the boot order is not the issue.

Dual Boot With XP, Boots From Wrong Drive

Jan 5, 2010

I installed windows 7 x64 RC a while back, and it detected windows xp and set up a dual boot. All was well.

I had a PSU failure, and i replaced the PSU. I set the BIOS to boot from the drive with windows 7 on it. It wouldn't boot. I set the bios to boot from the drive with windows Xp on it, and it booted to the dual boot screen.

Apparently, windows 7 placed the boot information on the old XP drive, so if i try to boot to windows 7 from the windows 7 drive, its a no go.

Now, this wouldnt' bug me so much, except that i want to replace the Xp drive with a larger 1tb drive. I don't need XP anymore, and do need storage (xp drive is 160gb). if i remove the XP drive, windows 7 won't boot. How can i fix this?

Removed Cd Drive Computer No Longer Boots?

Dec 12, 2012

I had a stock machine running windows 7. I built a computer for myself and I hardly use cds so when I needed to install windows 7 on the new computer I simply removed my cd drive from my old computer and put it in the new one. I assumed that since the os is installed to the hd that the computer would still run but it does not . I already installed windows 7 on the new computer but when I went to boot my old pc up it says no operating system. Do I just need to buy a new cd drive? Or do I need to buy another copy of windows?

Windows 7 Hard Drive Failure - Only Boots In Safe Mode?

Jul 31, 2012

After trying to scan my computer with tdskiller (I believe its called) to remove some viruses, I was asked to reboot. When I did, my backround desktop picture turned black, files seemed to be missing from my desktop and a window poped up scanning and telling me how many errors I had. Shortly after I got about 20 error pop up messages. I rebooted my computer and more files were missing to the point all I had was recycle bin, and two other programs.

Now the computer runs only in safe mode, No matter what I do (pressing f8 - start in normal mode) nothing works. I cant get internet access, and worst of all, I cant even system restore or even recover it back to to the malfunctioners option due to errors. I am stuck and do not know what else to try.

Ive tried the repair option in dos aswell and it just keeps me in the "Loading window files" screen, as I left it there for nearly four hours im guessing that was not going to work.

Win 7 No Longer Boots After Removal Of XP

Nov 1, 2009

I did have the following setup, on a single drive, two partitions:

345GB: Windows XP (installed first)
120GB: Windows 7

I've made a slight mistake – I've deleted the partition which hosted the MBR for my dual boot setup.
Basically, I have a single hard drive split into two partitions. I thought that I was thoroughly satisfied with Windows 7, so I decided to delete the partition which XP was sitting on. Little did I realise/remember at the time, but the XP partition held all the boot information, thus rendering my newly formed single partition unbootable. I booted GParted to ensure that my partition was intact, and it showed the following:

/dev/sda1 Extended 465GB LBA
/dev/sda5 NTFS 465GB Boot
(I manually flagged /dev/sda5 as 'boot')

This all appeared normal to me, so I put my Windows 7 disc in and attempted the various repair options. In my experience (with XP), FIXMBR from the command prompt usually fixes the issue, in this situation it hasn't. I've also tried 'BootRec.exe /fixmbr' & 'BootRec.exe /fixboot'. None of which seem to work.

My last attempt at fixing this was using the 'Startup repair' option on the Windows 7 disc. This hasn't worked either.

Can someone perhaps kindly offer me a solution? I'd rather not reinstall Windows.

Windows 7 No Longer Boots?

Dec 9, 2011

So just a few minutes ago my desktop was running fine and all. I was opening and reading documents off my flash drive when all of a sudden it turned off and proceeded to restart. Upon passing the POST screen, it comes to an error page that says boot device not found. Just FYI I have a WD 250GB boot drive and two additional Samsung 1TB drives set up in RAID 1 NTFS. So I look in BIOS for my boot drive and find it there and it says its working. However, when I try to set the WD boot drive as the first boot device, it does not show it as an option at all. Only my raid drive shows up along with removable drive, and cd drive.I need some ideas as to what could have caused this. The WD drive is a few years old, but I don't think the drive would have just died like that; there were no previous cues for the hard drive starting to fail. It still shows up in BIOS and powers up.I wanna hope that the MBR was somehow corrupted, which should be an easy repair I think if I can get my hands on the ISO file. Also, it's Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit

Installed Windows 7 To Ssd But It Boots From Hdd?

Feb 19, 2012

When I installed windows I had both my ssd and my hard drive plugged in, but when it wanted me to select a drive to boot to I highlighted the ssd and clicked next.It installed windows on it and all is good. But then when I went to change some stuff in the bios, I noticed it had my 1tb hard drive as the boot device. Windows is installed to the sdd so I was really confused by this. I tried making the ssd the first boot device but it didn't work, so I just changed it back to my hard drive for now, but I would like to know what's going on. Looking in the windows partition manager right now it does say my ssd is the boot drive. But my hdd does have a system reserved partition on it that's listed as system and active, my ssd is listed as boot and crash dump. Here's a picture of what I'm talking about.

Computer Boots Itself 5 Seconds After Being Shutdown?

Nov 17, 2012

today I was cleaning around my computer area and well was dusting where my computer sits and I pushed it too far out and it fell and hit the ground. It was on too and the monitor lost signal even though the VGA cord was plugged in...Since I couldn't properly shut it off by going to start etc etc I just held the power button till it shutdown..I thought my video card got loose so I hit the kill switch unplugged it and checked everything, but it was all fine. When I plugged it back in,it turned on and well kinda lagged on start up,more than usual...I figured everything was fine until I shut it down and after it was off like 5 seconds later it turned on by itself?? I checked my motherboard and components for any damage or cracks but couldn't find anything. Now this I do not mind,i'm just afraid that it'll cause damage to my PC or cause my motherboard to fry or something because now in order to keep it off from starting byitself I have to shutdown then quickly hit the kill switch, sometimes I dont do it fast enough and the computer slightly turns on,too fast to stop me from switching it off. Also when I hit the killswitch to off and then switch it back on.the pc refuses to start itself until I push the ON button and shutdown again.

Computer Boots To Desktop Then Freezes

Feb 22, 2012

Running Win 7 Home Premium 64 bit on a Lenovo Ideapad Laptop. Two days ago, I was trying to make my monitor display just a little less contrast, so I opened a utility called Intel HD Graphics that I found on the bottom right toolbar, and it had sliders with which I fixed the problem. But then I noticed a slider called "Hue", and by moving that quickly from side to side, my monitor went from blue to green to pink to yellow and back again, what can I say, I'm easily entertained.Anyway, the computer froze up, and I had to rude boot it. From then on, I would start the computer, and it would look good, like it would start for real, and I would even see some icons on the desktop, but then it would freeze up and I'd have to rude boot it again. It still works in Safe Mode.
