How Do I Install Win7 On The Drive From Which It Boots ?
I want to encrypt my hard drive with TrueCrypt, but it comes up with an error saying that "Windows is not installed on the drive from which it boots". I just reinstalled Windows 7, so it wouldn't be a huge loss to install it again in the same day, but when I install it, how do I make Windows install on the boot drive? When it came up with the partition prompt, I formatted the partitions (there were two) and then deleted the partitions and made it all unallocated space. Should I put one partition on first?

Only Boots With Install Dvd To Setup
The title almost says it all. I clean installed win7 on a freshly formatted and partitioned 30gb hdd and the OS installed fine and I was able to install a wireless adapter and get online and everything was hunky dory (save my radeon graphics card that apparently doesn't have wddm drivers). I restarted the computer with the install dvd in and it booted back up a couple times. Then, I tried restarting *without* the install dvd and thats where things have gone nutty. The computer will now only boot off the dvd and consequently will only allow me to run the setup. I tried the boot repair and that didn't detect any problems. I tried running the memory test from the same menu but that also didn't work because it seems like the boot memory on the hard drive isn't being accessed. I was able to run a memory scan by pressing f8 after booting to the dvd and got the safe mode options and whatnot, but thats all still just booting from the setup. The only thing I've noticed that looks like it could be the issue is that the harddrive is set up as driver letter "d" as opposed to the normal "c" (no pun intended). I suppose it wouldn't hurt to actually ask the implied question too. What might be the problem and how can I fix this issue so that I can run windows 7 normally on this computer?

Boots From A Different Drive Than OS Problem
yesterday I took out one of my 4 HDD's (I call it HDD -A-) to hookup on another PC and when I restarted my machine (where HDD -A- was in) it didn't boot. I already changed boot order in bios to the HDD -B- (win7). I always have to boot from HDD -A- to be able to boot HDD -B- win7. My question: A few months back I booted from win7 CD and used repair and I think it put the bootsector/MBR/...?? on the wrong HDD. My HDD's are fine. No bad blocks. Looking for simple solution without having to setup all again.

Install, Boots To Blk Screen W/ Mouse
SO i jsut got a limited edition windows 7 ultimate 64bit cd and i previously has windows 7 64bit rc installed and when i install the disc i just got it installs fine and everything but when it restarts it goes to the finishing installation and then it starts to boot up but gets stuck at blk screen with the mouse. I have had this problem before with windows 7 rc but all i had to do was just start it in safe mode then shut it down from there and start it back up it normal mode and it worked, but this i cannot do that. I go to safe mode and it goes to applying settings screen (doesnt do this in normal mode like it should) but it says it cannot finish this in the safe mode... so yeah... I am getting pretty mad because this is the final version of the software and it shouldnt have this problem.

Win7 Pro X64 RTM Boots To Blank Screen
I've been running the RTM of Windows 7 Professional x64 for a few weeks now, and until just earlier it's had no problems. I was in the middle of playing Fallout 3 when the system blue screened and rebooted (unfortunately automatic restart was enabled). Since then I've been unable to successfully boot Windows, although technically it is booting. I get a loading screen, although it's now the older Vista style green loading bar, and then the Windows start sound. However, the screen just stays blank, although the monitor is receiving input. Startup Repair finds no issues because technically Windows starts. System Restore failed when I tried that, as it was unable to delete a file. To make things even better, scandisk did run once during the boot process and found hundreds of orphaned files. I'm guessing that's just a result of the crash. If I try booting to safe mode I get a cursor on a blank screen, which I can move around, but that's it. Forcing 640x480 has also been unsuccessful. I know the video card isn't bad, since I still get display. All the drivers are loading because I get the Windows sound, and if I hit the power button during the blank screen I get disk activity and the system successfully shuts itself down and logs a successful shut down. My hardware is as follows: Intel Core i7 920 EVGA x58 3x SLI (Intel X58/ICH10R chipset) 6 GB 1600 mHz DDR3 300 GB Western Digital VelociRaptor EVGA nVidia GTX 285 video card On-board RealTek sound chipset Asus Xonar D1 (currently has no driver; none exists). I don't think any of the hardware above is the issue; as I said the system has been running great, and all parts are new and less than a month old. I could always just format and reinstall, but I'd like to find out other people's opinions and possibly resolve this issue.

Dual Boot With XP, Boots From Wrong Drive
I installed windows 7 x64 RC a while back, and it detected windows xp and set up a dual boot. All was well. I had a PSU failure, and i replaced the PSU. I set the BIOS to boot from the drive with windows 7 on it. It wouldn't boot. I set the bios to boot from the drive with windows Xp on it, and it booted to the dual boot screen. Apparently, windows 7 placed the boot information on the old XP drive, so if i try to boot to windows 7 from the windows 7 drive, its a no go. Now, this wouldnt' bug me so much, except that i want to replace the Xp drive with a larger 1tb drive. I don't need XP anymore, and do need storage (xp drive is 160gb). if i remove the XP drive, windows 7 won't boot. How can i fix this?

Install Win7 On SATA Drive
I have a HP m7667c, which has two SATA drives. The motherboard is ASUS P5BW-LA (or Basswood-UL8E). I've never successfully installed vista before because of it kept asking for SATA drive. I wonder if there is a solution for this problem with Window 7? I think I have RAID on in the BIOS configuration but I don't really want to turn it off because in that way my old WinXP would die. I just wanted to give Windows 7 a try before I completely change to it. Could anyone help me? I could provide more information about the desktop if necessary.

Win7 Will Not Install Using An IDE Drive
When installing Windows 7 RTM the setup files load and i get past the first few screens to the Install Now screen then a message appears saying that there are no drivers for the DVD drive that the disk has already loaded from. How am i meant to install Windows 7 if not from a DVD or where can i get the generic drivers for the DVD drive???

Cannot Boot Win7 Without Install DVD Within Drive
The installation of Windows 7 (32 bit) went smoothly without any surprises but if I attempt to reboot without the install DVD within the drive I have a boot failure. I can restart my computer time and time again and it will boot as expected as long as the installation CD remains within the drive. I verified that my boot sequence is CD then Harddisk and never had this problem on XP. Just in case, I thought I may have had a corrupted iso file, or something didn't install correctly so I've downloaded the 64bit flavor. The install again went smoothly but identical to the last time, I must keep the install dvd within the drive for a successful launch to the OS.

Accessing NTFS Drive After Win7 Install
I am running Win XP SP3 and I plan to upgrade to Windows 7. I currently have two hard disks as one is the system hard disk and the second drive is my data disk (E: Drive). If I upgrade to Windows 7, will I still be able to read the data on the E: drive? If Windows 7 can read the data, would it make sense to back up any files on the system hard disk to the E: drive so I could copy the files back to C: drive after Windows 7 install? All drives are currently NTFS.

Win7 Install On 2nd Drive Now Need To Format 1st
So I was not sure about Windows 7 and I have a PC with 2 physically separate internal hard drives. So I retained my vista OS on my C:/ drive (named OS) and did a clean install of windows 7 (using an upgrade disc student edition) on my D:/ drive (DATA). After setting up, using and liking windows 7, I want to eliminate my vista system, which is boated now, completely. However, apparently with an intel chipset, I can't simply format the OS drive using the disc management utility, even though when I boot windows 7, it is renamed the D:/ drive because the bootloader is on the OS drive. I have tried changing the DATA drive to an active, bootable drive in disc manager. Unfortunately, I can't seem to make it the primary partition. Originally found this forum on google with a hit on help: cannot reformat c drive useful information, but I am not completely sure what it means. After spending about a week customizing my Windows 7 install, I am not too happy about the possibility having to reinstall on the OS drive and go from there. What method should I use to format my OS drive, and still be able to boot the DATA drive. I would then like to use my OS drive for storing music, and pictures, etc. I have an external HD to work with. I suppose I could image the DATA drive with the Windows 7 install, format the OS drive, and then restore the image to the C drive, but that still leaves the problem of how to format the OS drive in the first place. Also, I've never done a recovery from image before, and am not big on the prospect.

Ghost A Win7 Install To Separate Hard Drive
I'm in IT (surprise surprise) and I have extra hard drives coming out my ears. I want to move my Win RC x64 install to a larger hard drive. Whats the easiest way to do this? I know its possible, I used to ghost XP machines at the local highschool (dont fret, they were all licensed). I'm toying with the concept of making a fresh install, and doing something to the effect of a system restore to it, or something like that. On a slightly less related note, my system is more powerful a machine than i ever expected to own two years ago. Its a core i7 machine with 12gb of ram and Windows 7 installed on a raptor. Why doesn't a fresh install of Windows 7 simply fly? Sure, multitasking can be done almost infinitely (lol), but there's literally no speed increase in app startup times, opening "my computer" or the device manager. None of it works as quickly or smoothly as i would have thought. Also, again, where can i find a simple list of changes between RC and RTM?

Win7 Can't Install To Empty SATA Drive
I am trying to install the win 7 beta both 64 bit and 32 bit on my ASUS mobo amd phenom based system on a blank fujitsu SATA hdd. I have tried with the bios set to ahci and to non ahci. I have tried without and with the drivers from my mobo for vista 32 bit or vista 64 bit where appropriate for ahci and non ahci installs. In all cases it gets to the point where the formatter appears. It always sees the drive and can format it, but only as a primary partition. It has no facility to create a system partition. When you click next, it says it can't find or create a system partition to install on. If I use an external utility to create the ntfs partition and make it bootable, the win 7 partitioner sees the system partition, but still gives the same error message about not being able to find or create a system partition. The drive is a blank freshly formatted drive with 118 GB free on it. After backing out of the install, the drive is formatted as NTFS and works fine for data storage. I have tried with the drive as unallocated space and after the installer creates the partition and formats it, it still gives the same error message. It also says there is additional information in the log files, but I can't find any way to view them, if they even exist at all.help?

Boots Into A Black Screen
i have tried 2 installs on my system. specs: MSI DKA790gx AMD BE 9850x4 Corsair Dominator 4x1GB DDR2 '1066' Sapphire 4850x2 1GB-ddr3 realtek audio WD Raptor 300GB WD Raptor 150GB WD 7200 w/16MB cachce 150GB First attempt i formatted the 7200 WD from my vista drive (vista x64) and then proceeded to boot to the dvd drive and load the OS (win7 x64) onto it. took 20+min to load and when it did the final reboot it passes the splash screen and then stops at a black screen. however, i can see the writing about win7 eval copy build 7100 in the bottom right corner, but all else is black, no mouse cursor, no task manager and no window key operation. 2nd attempt i had, had, win XP x64 all ready loaded on the 300GB raptor drive and decided to load win7 over it thinking it would use the driver cache from that OS and merge it with the new one. same issue! loads past window logo splash screen to a all black (alt BSOD lol) screen with the win7 info at bottom right and wont do anything else. now all my drives are sata but 1 optical which is IDE. i have browsed to page 14 looking for similar issues but didnt readily identify the exact symptoms i possess. is there something particular in my bios i need to change, take out 2GB of ram, or is my resolutoin of 1920x1080 to high?

Disk Check When Boots Up
i get the following on boot up. "cannot open volume for direct access" "Auto check cannot run due to an error caused by a recently installed software package" Then asks me to use system restore but it hadn't been set up on my drives so... it says underneath: "an unspecified error occured (766f66c756d652e63 3f1) " If anyone can help i'd be grateful, i'm having no luck with laptops, this one is only a month old. I wouldn't know what i can uninstall so i'm reluctant to do so unless i can find out which bit of software this error might relate to. The pc works fine after this. HP G62 Notebook PC, 64 bit.

Win 7 No Longer Boots After Removal Of XP
I did have the following setup, on a single drive, two partitions: 345GB: Windows XP (installed first) 120GB: Windows 7 I've made a slight mistake – I've deleted the partition which hosted the MBR for my dual boot setup. Basically, I have a single hard drive split into two partitions. I thought that I was thoroughly satisfied with Windows 7, so I decided to delete the partition which XP was sitting on. Little did I realise/remember at the time, but the XP partition held all the boot information, thus rendering my newly formed single partition unbootable. I booted GParted to ensure that my partition was intact, and it showed the following: /dev/sda1 Extended 465GB LBA /dev/sda5 NTFS 465GB Boot (I manually flagged /dev/sda5 as 'boot') This all appeared normal to me, so I put my Windows 7 disc in and attempted the various repair options. In my experience (with XP), FIXMBR from the command prompt usually fixes the issue, in this situation it hasn't. I've also tried 'BootRec.exe /fixmbr' & 'BootRec.exe /fixboot'. None of which seem to work. My last attempt at fixing this was using the 'Startup repair' option on the Windows 7 disc. This hasn't worked either. Can someone perhaps kindly offer me a solution? I'd rather not reinstall Windows.

Win 7 Boots Blinking Cursor
I installed Windows 7 beta, and it didn't boot. Just a blinking DOS cursor on a black screen. That's usually indicative of boot sector issues, so I booted the DVD and ran "bootrec /fixboot". That fixed it, but only until I restarted. Every time I restart, the boot sector seems to get corrupted (even if I do nothing but restart).

Win7 (32bit) To Win7 (64bit) Upgrade Install Error
I have purchased and downloaded both 32 bit and 64 bit Windows7 Professional (no CDs or media here only download version) I sucessfully upgraded from Vista 32 to Windows 7 32 Then I upgraded my hard disk (140Gb 500GB) and RAM (3GB to to 4GB) Now I would like to go from Windows 7 32bit to 64bit When I try and run the Windows 7-P-retail-en-us.x64.exe file it upacks the box then stops with this error:"We are unable to create or save files in the folder in which this application was downloaded. Please check the folder properties to make sure that you have security permission on the folder to write flies and that that folder is not read only". I am the System Admin and I have full rights, and have moved the exe and the setup box files to My Documentsand I have modified the directory properties/attributes but I still get the same error over and over. I searched the posts and some people stated one needs a clean install others say you can upgrade from any version so I am trying the upgrade here especially since the upgrade from Vista 32 to Windows 7 32 was smooth and did require all the extra work of a reinstall.

Locating Hard Drives For Dual Boots
Alright, so I'm trying to install Windows 7 using a dual boot enviroment. My system has 4 physical hard drives, and is just an average home computer. Nothing special, and no real valuable data. The first is an IDE that has 160 GB with XP installed on it. (Drive 0) The second is an IDE that has 40 GB and is the drive I'm attempting to install it on. (Drive 1) The third is a 160 GB SATA that is used for backups. (Drive 2) The fourth is a 1 TB external drive via USB that I use for my video and music files. (Drive 3) The two IDE drives are hooked up using a Rosewill PCI Express x1 expansion card. (My motherboard only has one IDE connection slot and the DVD drives are too far away to connect to the expansion card. The Tower is too large.) Anyways, I attempted to install Windows 7 from the DVD as Microsoft Recommended. I first attempted to do a clean install. When it asked what drive to install to, it only sees the Drive 0, and Drive 3. I don't want to replace the XP system obviously, and it won't allow me to install it through a USB drive, so Drive 3 is ruled out as well. After seeing that, I clicked back to upgrade install, and it still didn't see anything different. I then booted up windows XP and tried to install through that. I attempted to do a clean install, and sadly, didn't see anything different. However when I tried to do an upgrade install, it saw all four drives. I attempted to install it to the Drive 2. It started to install, then did the first reboot. After that it has the dual boot menu comes up, giving two options. I have the choice of "Earlier Version of Windows" or "Continue Setup". I try to continue the installation, but it won't continue the setup. I'm not 100% percent sure what the exact message says, (I'm at school right now) and will try it all again to get the exact error message. Any thoughts?

Win 7 Installation Boots Into Recovery Partition
My boot menu originally consists of Vista (C:) and recovery partition (D:). To install Windows 7, I shrank C and made a separate partition (W:) Now I have 3 partitions: Vista (C:), New Simple Volume (W:), Recovery (D:). I installed Windows 7 to the (W:), and it reboots a few times during installation. My situation goes as follows: Initial installation---Reboot (1 of 3)---bypasses the boot menu and continues installation---Reboot (2 of 3)---boot menu shows up and I can choose to continue the installation of Windows 7, or go to Vista. When I choose Windows 7, it finishes installation---Reboot (3 of 3)---No boot menu is shown. Computer boots into recovery partition. Why is this happening? Repairing Windows 7 or Vista using recovery partition doesn't help either. It basically just forms a loop by booting to the recovery every time. Interestingly, the only way I can start Vista again is by reinstalling Windows 7 and wait until the boot menu screen show up after the reboot (2 of 3).

Recent Installation Win 7 Boots Into Black Screen
Recently installed Win 7. Difficulty with getting display correct. Sizing problems and off the screen taskbar. Google search indicates questins with nvidia drivers. I have a GT9600 512mb card. Downloaded latest Win 7 drivers. Computer now boots into black screen. No cursor, nothing. Went into Safe Mode. Boots ok. Removed all nvidia drivers. Back to boot in regular mode. Black screen again. Forced `restart. F8 to low res VGA. Same problem. Black screen. Put Win 7 installation CD in. Did "Repair". Same problem. Can not get a display except in "Safe Mode." Any ideas?
