Windows Did Not Close Properly

I do not want to have to reinstall windows and reinstall applications.On my dad's computer last night the update for windows got interrupted while it was shutting down applying the updatesWhen I turned the computer back on it will not load windows. I get black screen. I have tried the following so far: Windows did not close properly message appeared...it tried to fix..brought me to a screen which it gave me options to "Start up Repair", "System Restore" and "System Image".I tried System Restore, there were only one restore point I can choose from some reason and it did not work. The message returns with System Restore failed.I then tried the Startup Repair. It stated that it may or may not fixed the problem. It restarts to Windows I get the Windows logo splash screen without the Windows 7 text. It then says "FATAL error C0000034 applying update operation 197 of 113977.Also I want to mention I cannot boot into safe mode. It just hangs.

Basically, all I want to be able to do is use the [ESC] button to close windows (ie Browsers,apps, games, anything that if selected and when a button is pressed will close it) in windows 7.
I always thought this would be good but is there anyway to make it do that from inside windows without some other software. If there isn't, then what other 3rd party programs can let me do this in Windows.
I have searched, not as heavy as I think i should, but all i keep seeing in Visual Basic and C++ programing, something I'm not good at.
If anyone can help it would be cool. It doesn't have to be [esc] but i would prefer it.

I'm repeatedly having this error where all the folders I have open is closing and an error message appears: "Windows explorer needs to close." After 1-2 seconds other programs that were running reappears but the folders have been closed. Is this normal? I ran full system scan with MSE, MBAM and Superantispyware. No virus or malware was found.

when I shut down my machine, I'll go back a while later and it's still running. The screen will say that it's waiting for me to close Firefox. If I choose Force Shutdown, it warns me that I'll lose any unsaved data. In the past when I ran WinXP, I would only get this msg if I had an open file that I hadn't saved changes on. So as long as all my files were saved, I could have 10 programs open and Windows would shut them all down automatically when I shut down the computer. My work computer runs Win7, and it will do the same thing. I searched online and found a way to force shutdown, but will that shut down the computer even if I have an unsaved file in Word or Excel or whatever?

I have installed on my computer Office 2007.When i opend a Word or Excel document and than try to close it i get the following error messages: "Microsoft office Word has stoped working"A Problem coused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notofy you if a solution is available.In some cases i can not even close my word ofr excel document and only can do so by using the Task Manager!

Click start / Click shutdown / Shutdown process starts then hangs at a message "A program needs to close - Windows Logon". Let it set for a couple minutes and it may or may not complete the shutdown process. Sometimes I have to click the Forced button.Does not do this if restart is clicked.

I have a puzzling problem, my new laptop allows a variety of power adjustment settings, however the only choice *sleep* for the lid closing, it is greyed out so I cannot select anything else, in the advanced settings no matter which configuration I choose for the rest, I am given just one choice.I always set ac connected lid close to do nothing on any laptop I have ever had before so I am mighty confused why I have no choice.

In Microsoft Outlook, if you open an email you've received and click on the "delete" icon, the email window just closes and takes you back to the main Outlook window. This is an option that you set in the preferences, but Windows Mail either doesn't have it or I just can't find it.
What happens in Windows Mail is that when you click on the delete icon, instead of closing the email and going back to the main window, it just goes to the next email.
Has anyone figured this one out?

I was trying to install the automatic win7 updates and in the 'important' update was ie9. I clicked on 'install updates' and windows started installing ie9. After a couple of seconds I got this window saying:: "Some files that need to be updated are currently being used by these programs. Please save your work, close the programs and then continue. If you can't close, setup can do it for you."

Is there any way to speed up the time it takes to close the preview window? By default, it takes about 1.5 seconds for the window to close after moving the mouse off of the icon or preview pane.Turning off taskbar animations in the "visual effects" does not shorten the time. It just takes away the animation, but, it still takes about 1.5 seconds for the preview to go away.

My computer is very unresponsive with hangs which can last up to several minutes where nothing is clickable, the mouse is movable, I can hover over desktop icons and see the outline register, but when I click, for example to open my computer, it will start the freezing.Task manager does not open, saying with an error message:"Failure to display security and shut down options The logon process was unable to display security and logon options when ctrl alt delete was pressed. If the operating system does not respond, press ESC or restart the computer by using the power switch."I checked performance monitor and there is no noticeable hardware issue, which makes me believe it's either the PSU or motherboard. I took out the ram one by one and tested the system and the same thing happens.My most likely guess is that the power supply is failing, and this is just early symptoms of that. I already had a power supply fail on this computer 2 years ago, but at that time it would shut the computer down unexpectedly.I removed viruses, spyware, and did all the basics. This is a fresh system install.

When I open a folder (eg windows explorer), it will open then restart explorer.exe (ie it will close the window, the start menu disappears and then windows flashes up as if it has just logged on). Sometimes restarting sorts the issue but the problem remains.

From looking at others' questions, this seems to be a recurring problem under Windows for a long time. My version: running Windows 7, 64-bit, with Spyware Doctor. Several applications fail to close on exit, and I have to manually close them in Task Manager before they will work again. Always happens with Outlook 2007, Google Chrome, sometimes happens with Firefox and Acrobat Reader. Outlook also hangs on the last message in a "send and receive" operation.

i have the same problem with a benq joybook a53, every time i close the lid, when i open it , i have a blue screen, and it doesn`t matter if i put it on sleep or hibernate, only with "do nothing" doesn`t appear the blue screen, but i really do nead to close the lid and put it to sleep, or hibernate. i`ve attached the files from c:\windowsminidump

I have had this strange problem for a few weeks now and so far I can't figure out a solution or why it happens.
When closing an application, the application's service (in the Windows Task Manager) doesn't end with the closing of the application like it should. This is happening with 95% of my applications.

I've been running RC1 since it became available, and recently I've added 2 other user accounts on my main PC. These 2 accounts seem to have the same problem: neither of them allow you to "x-out" of a window by clicking the red X up in the right hand corner to close the window.
