Windows Explorer recently started opening by itself without prompting or warning. This is really annoying, and if I leave my computer on and unattended, I will come back and find dozens of Explorer instances open on my desktop. They always open in the Library directory. [code]
View 5 RepliesFor a couple of weeks, the Windows 7 Sound dialog box (the one with all the Playback/Recording, etc options under Control Panel-Hardware and Sound) has been randomly opening. I'll close it and at some later time it will spontaneously reopen, although unpredictably.The OS is the 32-bit version of Windows 7 Home Premium running on an HP Pavilion Slimline s3330f that we've had for a couple of years prior to the emergence of this issue.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a strange problem that has been occurring since I very first installed Windows 7 x64 fresh. Whenever I click on the primary C drive in Explorer (or any other CD, card reader, or network mapped drive), sometimes 1 new window will open up, sometimes 2 new windows will open up, and sometimes 3 new windows will open up. The new windows usually, but not always, have an address bar. Explorer just seems to randomly open multiple windows at will.
I've been searching and searching online, trying various Tools->Folder Options as well as registry settings, but nothing seems to work. All I've found is a couple other forum posts with the same problem (random amount of multiple windows opening), but no resolutions.
This doesn't happen on any of my other Windows 7 x64 computers. The main difference I can think of is that this is the only machine I have with an SSD, but I can't see how that would effect all drives in Explorer.
I know this topic is similar to a number of others that have been posted before but i have not been able to successfully apply any of the solutions to the posts i have found addressing this issue.
It began happening after downloading an .mkv file. initially exp crashed and asked to restart. Did so and all good apart from occasional crashing and restarting.
Now turned lap-top on again and it won't even finish restarting before crashing, and this time there is no escaping the loop. Tried a restore from before the file was there but for some reason this didn't make any difference!
Currently in safe mode, have disabled all non ms services and all start-up items using msconfig and restarted normally - didn't change anything.
Ran CCleaner and cleaned out temp files and registry and still no change.
After found this site downloaded and ran SF diag tool as instructed in FAQ and copied all 8 files except Minidump folder which is apparently empty. Remaining files attached.
One person has suggested repairing using Windows Installer dvd this doesn't help me as OS was pre-installed and I don't have a DVD.
I have a laptop with Windows 7 64 bit. The first few days I had it, Internet Explorer worked fine. Then it malfunctioned. When you double click the IE shortcut it would open for a split second then close. When you went to the Start menu, Programs, it would do the same. I downloaded and installed IE 8 64 bit from Microsoft's website. When I double click the IE 8 64 bit shortcut it opens fine! The problem is, I can't set IE 8 64 as my default browser. I get a Windows error message that says you cannot set IE 8 64 as your default browser. So I can open IE 8 64 manually but any link I click tries to open IE 8 (32 bit presumably) which still opens then immediately closes.

In Windows 7, this does not happen - the focus remains in the left panel (i.e. Favourites, Libraries, Homegroup etc).
make the focus switch to folders/files when a folder opens?
I have a CHM file stored on the OS harddrive.Whenever I try to click on the table of contents, it tries to download the htm file instead of opening it in the adjacent window. All my other chm files work normally. I'm not sure if a recent windows update did this.

It is though it is stuck on "Open each folder in its own window" even though the radio button is selecting "Open each folder in the same window" I have tried setting it back and forward between the two - no difference.

Usually the drive will open up in the same window, but occasionally the drive will open in two, new windows. I then have to close the previous windows down, which is annoying.

I looked at some of the solutions including the error check in the c:. I've installed the ccleaner on my computer as well and still didnt work. So the problem is, whenever I am on my computer and explorer crashes it says "the windows explorer has stopped working" and after that it just restarts the explorer but my all the icons in the system icons disappear except for the clock. I tried to go and change it but I can't, the sound, internet and uac icons disappear and I can only see them again if I reboot my computer. I am running windows 7 32-bit. [URL].

I'm new here and I've been having some problems with explorer crashing. I've searched all over the net including various forums and while I've found cases similar to mine none of them are quite like it. For instance, explorer will crash and ask for me to restart it randomly. It's not the right-click crash like some have had, I've checked my registry for a machine throttling string that caused some people crashes, but mine will just happen out of the blue, usually (but not always) when I have an explorer window open.The crash itself doesn't effect much. Lately explorer.exe has started to stop responding and crash randomly, when it does then it doesn't restart and I can't start it from the taskmanger/run/cmd and I have to restart or re-log to get it to work again.

This started about 3 days ago, and I'm not sure how. I've run Spybot, AVG and other programs, but nothing seems to stop it.Whenever I click on a link in my bookmarks, it gets deleted in the folder almost automatically afterwards. The bookmarks that get deleted seem to happen at random. When I replaced the bookmarks and clicked them again, sometimes they are fine while others that survived the first round get erased, while some bookmarks remain untouched. This happens to bookmarks in completely different folders, and my history seems to have been left untouched.

This happens when clicking on a link on the desktop or Start Menu as well as double-clicking an application file the Program Files (x86) directory or double-clicking on associated files (.doc, .odt, ...). I have uninstalled and reinstalled versions 3.3 and 3.4 several times. The suite's quickstarter.exe is in my Startup folder and appears in MSCONFIG as a Startup item but is not running in Task Manager upon start up.When I boot into Safe Mode, the OO applications run perfectly. I have run MS Security Essentials scans in regular and Safe Mode as well as Comodo Anti-Virus scans.Googling and posting on an OpenOffice forum indicated several things to try, none of which panned out:I installed Java 6.33 32-bit version.DocuShare is not running or installed.I turned off Skype.I turned off all firewalls and anti-malware programs and services.I stopped and disabled non-critical services (only 26 processes were running in Task Manager).I have uninstalled OO, rebooted, reinstalled, rebooted after each of these attempts with the same results.
When I only had 26 processes running, opening an OO program caused the dllhost process to appear in Task Manager for several seconds. I have not noticed that when all services are activated. In fact, I specifically noticed it not happening.
After downloading windows 7 on my laptop, it will not lof off/shut down y itself you have t power it down manually and it always comes up to start windows normally or in safe mode when you turn it back on. Also when it goes in to power save/sleep mode most of the time in order to come back on you have to force shut down and turn back on.

View 3 Replies View RelatedWhen the PC is on it will depending on how long its been on will randomy just shut off. When it shuts off, it "sometimes" reboots but most often it "tries" to reboot but fails and then stays off. After this failed try to reboot if I press the power button on the case and mobo, nothing.Now if I turn OFF the PSU leave it for a few minutes and come back turn the PSU switch on and press the power button the system comes to life for a second or two then dies and will no respond to the power buttons until I turn off the PSU again.I have gotten it up and running from this state by leaving it off and unplugged for a couple of hours. When I say the PC comes to life for a second or two, I mean the case fans. If I get it booted up the BIOS is reset to default for some reason. Also if it makes it to windows, the notification area icons also gets reset... very very odd.I have a short video of the problem, sorry for the darkness, I finally decided to video it and it was 11pm.PSU dying or Mobo. I dont have extra's so I cant test them.Forgot to mention, ive checked for heat problems but none of my temps are high, they are all normal and its a Antec 1200 with tons of air movement.Event Viewer shows nothing expect for unexpected shutdown. My event viewer is clean from any errors also. I do not get any BSOD and this is on a fresh Windows 7 install from late Jan.
