In XP, if I opened up a folder, I could start typing and the folders/files list view would jump down according to the letters I typed in.
In Windows 7, this does not happen - the focus remains in the left panel (i.e. Favourites, Libraries, Homegroup etc).

So i have created some shortcuts to quicklaunch certain folders. Some of them open and i can use the arrow keys to scroll through the items in the folder.
Some of them open with the "Name" column selected, so the arrow keys don't initially scroll through the items in the folder.
I know this is very specific, but there HAS GOT to be a way to define what it opens to by default... especially since some of my folders default to the list of items within the folder.
I am running into an issue where I can open a window/program with my mouse however once the window is open I cannot click inside of it. The window becomes inactive. I also have noticed I cannot right click on my desktop to bring up the properties. I can right click on the window in the task bar to close it but not in the window. Since this is happening I am limited to command prompt. I ran sfc /scannow with no errors. I tried with 3 different mice. I booted the computer into safe mode with command prompt and brought up the device manager to show devices not in use, and when the device manager window opened I could click inside it! since I could use the window I uninstalled all mouse drivers, and reinstalled my microsoft wireless usb mouse driver.. while in this safe mode I changed my mouse properties to system default as I read somewhere that can reset things. Next I booted the computer in safe mode (without command prompt) and still the same thing. I was trying to do a restore point as well however my Kaspersky antivirus 2012 is preventing that as i cannot find a way to kill the program through command prompt.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI just got a new computer and it has Windows 7. Windows 7 is driving me nuts because the top-most window will not automatically get focus. For example, say I have Windows-Explorer and Notepad open. I have Notepad focused and am working in it. I then close Notepad, which leaves Windows-Explorer as the only open window on the desktop. Yet the Windows-Explorer window will not automaticlaly get focus. Instead it is "greyed" out and the only way I can focus it is to click on the window.
Also, when I assign a keyboard shortcut (e.g., to open Internet Explorer if I assign Ctrl+Alt+I), it will never open with focus. It will open the app but it will be "greyed out" and it will not get focus until I click on it.
This never happened on Windows XP. On XP the top-most window would always get focus if there was no window "above it" or if the window "above it" was closed.
Is there any way to get Windows 7 to behave like Windows XP with windows getting focus?
any time a program, ANY program (doesn't matter if it is an installer or what) is not programmed to open or run in the background, if something happens in it, the focus gets stolen from where I am (say Firefox or a Microsoft Word Document), even if the application doesn't actually pop up, then I have to re-click on the program to regain focus and continue working.The real problem is when things pop up unexpectedly as I am typing and I hit the space bar, which results in my accepting something I may not have wanted to.Is there any way at all to FORCE a global "stay in the background" for any program that doesn't have focus or to prevent programs from stealing the focus?I tried the mouse hover trick, but that's an annoyance because if I accidentally bump it off of my active window, whatever one it comes on top of becomes active and is only worth it if I'm working in a full screen window (which is maybe 30% of the time).I am running Windows 7 Home Premium x64.
View 9 Replies View RelatedSince past 2-3 weeks I have noticed an issue that bugs me too much. The focus on a window keeps getting lost automatically.
Lets say I am reading a page or writing in a textbox (like this one), the current focus would automatically get lost and again need to click somewhere in the program. I may be scrolling down using scroll bar of mouse or arrow keys of keyboard or my cursor is being pointed somewhere in a textbox. Because of this issue, I again have to click manually a program.
I tried googling but could not find a suitable solution or root cause of the issue. Maybe there is a program that gets activated automatically and focus shifts to that hidden program - however i could not find one.
I am using Windows 7 and IE8 in my application. I am opening a new pop window using window.open(). After submit, my request will reload the same opup. While reloading the page is hiding behind the parent window. I have tried using window.focus() to bring the popup front, its not working. This problem occurs only if i use Win 7 and IE8

This is happening on a desktop (not a laptop). I have Kingston Trackball drivers installed by OS.
The only workaround I have found is starting task manager. I had this problem in Vista also. Was hoping Win 7 would have fixed it.
on a fresh install of Win 7 64 bit, in some situations when I open a folder (for eg. when I right-click on a link and choose open containing folder), the folder doesn't come to the front. It opens but sits blinking on the taskbar. I want it to get focus and come to the front.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI am always manipulation files between several folders so I have several iterations of Windows Explorer open when my computer boots up and showing the contents of the folders that I manipulate all the time. Using XP files moved or copied into another folder always appeared at the bottom of the explorer window and that was good because although they were out of alphabetical order I always knew where to find the new files in the explorer window. They would stay at the bottom until I clicked 'Refresh' or changed the focus to another folder or shut down that explorer. Windows 7 explorer behaves differently and places new files in alphabetical order. Is there a way it can be changed so that new files show at the bottom of the explorer window?

It makes typing anything hell, since the cursor sometimes jumps to a different position on the page, but mostly just loses focus altogether. If I enter a folder that has many subfolders and extra files, it seems to load everything at once in alphabetical order, then there's a delay while it sorts the folders and the individual files separately, also in alphabetical order. This delay can be something like 5 seconds with just a few hundred items, and it just grows from there.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a good sony vaio from 2010 with a win7 home premium, 4 Gb Ram, 500Gb HDD, 50 Gb available currently. I know various System32 files are missing from information from a HijackThis Scan yesturday, eg lsass.exe. Explorer.exe does not handle folders well-double clicking should open any folder but instead it defaults to trying to open it with the first available software in the context menue, which happens to be VLC Media player. This is a known problem, to do with registry damage and/or windows explorer, not to do with VLC. I have been diligent with updating drivers, and am currently using Slimdrivers to identify further improvements to my driver lineup.
I will add a scan results from tweaking com windows repair after this post. Avast interenet security and Malwarebytes are up to date and scan have found nothing lately. MBAB had to be uninstalled and reinstalled today due to some sudden loss of the signatures update file(I think), but is running well again now. I wish to go through a range of tests and find out about some procedure to restore these corrupt system files. I am an advanced home user but have run out of idea with this problem.
Whenever I try to open "Devices and Printers," the green bar at the top of the next window begins moving from left to right slowly and never completes the trip to the end of the bar and the Devices and Printer window never opens. I have to open "Devices and Printers several times over several days with the same result.

tried system restore, tried Cmd prompt thing... what may have happened is that I recently was uninstalling things... umm made sure this was a software thing ... defaulted my laptop's touchpad used other mouses and still same result.
every time i turn on my laptop, a startup repair window pops up and then when it's done solving the problems it shuts down. when i try opening it again the startup window appears.

View 9 Replies View RelatedNot sure if "focus" is the right term here, but anyway. I use "list" view almost exclusively so this may not be an issue with other views. But one of my beefs with Windows 7 is: if you're viewing a folder that has multiple rows of files or sub folders; then you click on of the the folders that's more to the right of the window and the entire contents of the window reorients itself so what you clicked on is now more towards the left area of the window. Know what I'm saying?

Everytime I tried to open [URL](my IP camera video stream file); realPlayer Basic v14 kept opening an upgrade to realPlayer Plus window. When I click on "No thanks" another window for free trial opened. This was an endless loop. The IP camera video stream is H264 format and streams just fine on my other Windows 7 PC. Well, to make a long story short; the Win 7 Pro machine did not have QuickTime player installed which provided the H264 codec needed. I installed QuickTime and the IP camera now streams via realPlayer 14. I suspect you could install any H264 codec and accomplish the same thing and avoid the Plus upgrade.

Which files-- Excel (xls), Microsoft Paint (jpg), Corel Photo-Paint (jpg) >> seems like all applications that can open multiple files. It definitely seems like a change to the O/S. Same apps worked fine in XP.
(I would accept a single tweak to get Corel Photo-Paint JPGs to all open in the same app window. I want to go to windows explorer, click on JPGs, and have them all open in 1 instance of Corel Photo-Paint, or any application associated with JPGs.)
I am playing a game, that game is a full screen game being displayed on one monitor, and I have itunes open in the other monitor. The song changes, and I dont like it, I can free my mouse, and move it to the other monitor, but if I click anything, Windows sees that as me wanting to focus the desktop, so it minimizes the game.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a laptop with Windows 7 64 bit. The first few days I had it, Internet Explorer worked fine. Then it malfunctioned. When you double click the IE shortcut it would open for a split second then close. When you went to the Start menu, Programs, it would do the same. I downloaded and installed IE 8 64 bit from Microsoft's website. When I double click the IE 8 64 bit shortcut it opens fine! The problem is, I can't set IE 8 64 as my default browser. I get a Windows error message that says you cannot set IE 8 64 as your default browser. So I can open IE 8 64 manually but any link I click tries to open IE 8 (32 bit presumably) which still opens then immediately closes.
