I have a Dell XPS L511z, with Windows 7 as my main OS. The problem is, literally every 60 seconds the current window loses focus. It makes typing anything hell, since the cursor sometimes jumps to a different position on the page, but mostly just loses focus altogether. I have a feeling the problem is to do with the Optimus setup.

This is happening on a desktop (not a laptop). I have Kingston Trackball drivers installed by OS.
The only workaround I have found is starting task manager. I had this problem in Vista also. Was hoping Win 7 would have fixed it.
I've had Windows 7 RC1 for a few months now, and up until now it's been working flawlessly. Now when I'm doing anything, I click with the mouse, the window loses focus to another window. This is hard to describe but I've noticed that some of the open programs on the taskbar also disappear but then reappear almost instantly while this is happening. If I have multiple programs open they'll even rearrange the order (not the pinned programs), ie: firefox open and i have control panel open, firefox will flicker, lose focus, then the program icon will disappear from the left of the control panel and then be on the right, as if I had opened it after I had opened Control Panel.
It might be important to note that I just installed a windows update yesterday, that's the only thing I've really changed.
I'm running a Dell XPS M1530, 2 gigs of ram, and I have about 8 gigs free on my windows drive. I'm running a GeForce 8600M GT driver version 176.44 (forceware drivers). I use a Logitech VX Nano mouse.
I don't even really know how to diagnose the problem - I was thinking maybe driver issues or maybe even a mouse issue
I reinstalled windows 7 about an hour ago.The reason I decided to reinstall was because I was having the minor annoyance of windows losing focus, as if I had clicked the taskbar or something (but I didn't).The problem is still here. I just reinstalled, I got rid of windows.old, and task manager reports a whopping 36 processes running. The only programs I have installed are Firefox, Flash, and Microsoft Security Essentials. I have visited no suspicious websites in the past half hour.What the heck do I do now? There are absolutely NO programs that I know of that could possibly be causing this problem. I can only conclude that it must be malware. If so, how can I reinstall again so that there is nothing left behind from the old installation? Because windows.old was there, maybe whatever was on my old install carried over.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have Windows 7 Ultimate built from scratch, (although this same issue happened before the rebuild, from an upgrade to Windows 7 Pro from Windows Vista); Windows 7 is build 7600.I have a multiple monitor setup and Outlook runs on the r/h screen. When I use Outlook 2007, I click new mail, and the new message window opens on the l/h screen. Same when I click reply or forward. Whether I am opening a new message, or replying/forwarding an existing message, sometimes, (and it really is sporadic), the new message window won't take focus. So when I started to type, my focus shoots up and down on the Outlook window; e.g. if I hit H to start typing H, it will try and jump to a message starting with H.

There are no error messages, and I can't find a single thing to help me. Yesterday, I downloaded a registry cleaner, and after it cleaned the errors, I could use full screen apps very well. View 6 Replies View RelatedI just got a new computer and it has Windows 7. Windows 7 is driving me nuts because the top-most window will not automatically get focus. For example, say I have Windows-Explorer and Notepad open. I have Notepad focused and am working in it. I then close Notepad, which leaves Windows-Explorer as the only open window on the desktop. Yet the Windows-Explorer window will not automaticlaly get focus. Instead it is "greyed" out and the only way I can focus it is to click on the window.
Also, when I assign a keyboard shortcut (e.g., to open Internet Explorer if I assign Ctrl+Alt+I), it will never open with focus. It will open the app but it will be "greyed out" and it will not get focus until I click on it.
This never happened on Windows XP. On XP the top-most window would always get focus if there was no window "above it" or if the window "above it" was closed.
Is there any way to get Windows 7 to behave like Windows XP with windows getting focus?
any time a program, ANY program (doesn't matter if it is an installer or what) is not programmed to open or run in the background, if something happens in it, the focus gets stolen from where I am (say Firefox or a Microsoft Word Document), even if the application doesn't actually pop up, then I have to re-click on the program to regain focus and continue working.The real problem is when things pop up unexpectedly as I am typing and I hit the space bar, which results in my accepting something I may not have wanted to.Is there any way at all to FORCE a global "stay in the background" for any program that doesn't have focus or to prevent programs from stealing the focus?I tried the mouse hover trick, but that's an annoyance because if I accidentally bump it off of my active window, whatever one it comes on top of becomes active and is only worth it if I'm working in a full screen window (which is maybe 30% of the time).I am running Windows 7 Home Premium x64.
View 9 Replies View RelatedSince past 2-3 weeks I have noticed an issue that bugs me too much. The focus on a window keeps getting lost automatically.
Lets say I am reading a page or writing in a textbox (like this one), the current focus would automatically get lost and again need to click somewhere in the program. I may be scrolling down using scroll bar of mouse or arrow keys of keyboard or my cursor is being pointed somewhere in a textbox. Because of this issue, I again have to click manually a program.
I tried googling but could not find a suitable solution or root cause of the issue. Maybe there is a program that gets activated automatically and focus shifts to that hidden program - however i could not find one.
I am using Windows 7 and IE8 in my application. I am opening a new pop window using window.open(). After submit, my request will reload the same opup. While reloading the page is hiding behind the parent window. I have tried using window.focus() to bring the popup front, its not working. This problem occurs only if i use Win 7 and IE8

In Windows 7, this does not happen - the focus remains in the left panel (i.e. Favourites, Libraries, Homegroup etc).
make the focus switch to folders/files when a folder opens?
I was just wondering if there is a hotkey to either focus on/make active what the mouse is over or just to left click. this would be useful for me sometimes and i'm sure it is possible. I haven't seen this on any hotkey lists around though.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have no viruses, all software, flash, drivers, and BIOS are current. I have no gagets running, have all animation and effects turned off. The simplest example is trying to click on the taskbar icon for sound to mute or change the volume. When I try to move the cursor to the pop-up, it disappears. Same thing happens with maxmized windows, I cannot use the taskbar icon to close them. The pop up disappears when I move off the task bar. When composing email in Windows Live Mail , I cannot keep the cursor in the Subject line to type a title. (To get the subject line for this email,I had to type it in the body and cut/paste.) The mouse focus shifts to the body of the email. I have tried USB mice, cordless mice, trackpad, all do the same.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am running into an issue where I can open a window/program with my mouse however once the window is open I cannot click inside of it. The window becomes inactive. I also have noticed I cannot right click on my desktop to bring up the properties. I can right click on the window in the task bar to close it but not in the window. Since this is happening I am limited to command prompt. I ran sfc /scannow with no errors. I tried with 3 different mice. I booted the computer into safe mode with command prompt and brought up the device manager to show devices not in use, and when the device manager window opened I could click inside it! since I could use the window I uninstalled all mouse drivers, and reinstalled my microsoft wireless usb mouse driver.. while in this safe mode I changed my mouse properties to system default as I read somewhere that can reset things. Next I booted the computer in safe mode (without command prompt) and still the same thing. I was trying to do a restore point as well however my Kaspersky antivirus 2012 is preventing that as i cannot find a way to kill the program through command prompt.

View 13 Replies View RelatedIn XP when I chose Folder options and then the File types tab, Folder was listed as a file type (Extension=None). I could select it, click the Advanced button and add a program to that file type. I would add the phrase CommandPrompt connected to the program cmd.exe. This then would allow me to right click on a folder and open the DOS window at that location. A big time saver for the work I do. I cannot find how to do this in Windows 7.

The built-in DVD Maker and Movie Maker work sometimes, they can't burn many types of files, and you ahve to go through a 2 hour burning process before you find out the DVD has no sound during playback!

Back in XP, you could enable this with Tweak UI, which called it X-mouse.
It was great, i didn't have to click on a window to work in it.

As this article points out, you can switch windows by hovering if you enable it through:
Control Panel> Ease of Access> Change How Your Mouse Works
scroll down, check box "Activate a window by hovering over it with the mouse"
this method raises windows to the front when you hover over them.

if you are familiar with Linux x-mouse behaviour, you might appreciate its other functions.

If you don't need those extra functions, you can make a couple swift changes in the registry and achieve the same effect:

I have a Microsoft 5000 bluetooth mouse which doesn't work ever since I updated my bluetooth drivers. My bluetooth keyboard and numpad work fine. I want to re-pair it with the computer but Windows will not display any device which is already installed when looking for devices and my mouse currently shows up in the devices and printers window. I want to remove the mouse from this window but it is the only device which doesn't have a "remove device" option when I click it. The keyboard and the numpad both have this option...
How can I remove this device so I can pair it again with the computer?

I've just used ~70% of it's parts to build a new computer for my dad and since then he's been experiencing constant BSODs. The computer is running a freshly installed over-the-counter bought OEM copy of Windows 7 Home Premium x64 which is up to date as of last week. It will run fine for an unpredictable length of time between 15mins to half a day then BSOD. Sometimes it will then get stuck into a "crash-reboot" cycle and he will have to hard power it off.
The computer is less 18mths old. The parts I have been using confidently over the last 18mths are as follows:
- MOBO: Gigabyte P55-UD4
- CPU: Intel i5 750 quad core (never overclocked).
- RAM: 2x(DDR3 2GB G.Skill 1333mhz)
The new components we installed are:
- GFX: Asus ATI HD5550
- HDD Sata 200GB Baracuda
- CD Drive: LG DVD writer on an IDE ribbon
- PSU: Antec VP450P 450w
I initially had an old install of Windows 7 on a 120GB Sata drive but when he started getting issues I installed a brand new OEM Windows 7 on the Sata 200GB and even changed the Sata cable. It ran fine for a day then started up again. From what I could see none of the crashes pointed toward gfx drivers - however I've noticed CPUz will only tell me that it's a HD5500 series card and gives me no other info so maybe it isn't being recognised properly . The only other thing to change was the PSU - which admittedly is a budget one (but from reviews should be reasonable) from deduction it's the only thing I can put it down to.
I got this PC 3 weeks ago. For two days now Several of my devices have a Code 10 on start up. For instance my mouse in the Device Manager window has a code 10 and will not work until I use the trouble shooter and it re-installs the driver. I have tried updating the USB drivers as many recommend but there were no updates. I tried Microsoft's fix it, and it was not fixed.
