Can't Add A Right Mouse Program Option To The Folder File Type
Oct 10, 2011
In XP when I chose Folder options and then the File types tab, Folder was listed as a file type (Extension=None). I could select it, click the Advanced button and add a program to that file type. I would add the phrase CommandPrompt connected to the program cmd.exe. This then would allow me to right click on a folder and open the DOS window at that location. A big time saver for the work I do. I cannot find how to do this in Windows 7.

I used to be able to open replays of a certain game (Warcraft 3) just by simply double clicking on them. I reinstalled Windows 7 2weeks ago, along with the game. Now when I double click them, it doesnt know what program to use --> I go through the standard "open with" and find my war3.exe. Now when I go to double click the replay file, it openes warcraft3 not the replay itself (like it used to, and like how I want it).
Ive done alot of digging around and trying to find how to fix it, but Im still unable to fix this. What I've found out that I basically need the replay files (.w3g) to open in E:Program filesWarcraft IIIwar3.exe -loadfile "%1"
The problem is, that with windows7 I am unable to find the place where I can insert this, all I was able to find was ways for XP/Vista but they are different from Windows 7.

I have a media library with, surprisingly enough, media in it! Videos to be exact. Each of the sub-folders have in them videos as well as .nfo files for displaying data awesomeness in the likes of XBMC. However, I do not like the way it makes my folders look when I browse to them in explorer.
Is there a way to hide all my *.nfo files only in the Video folder and subfolders?

I ask because I have just noticed that when I open WORD files that the newly generated WBK-files are visible despite me using the "attrib +h *.nfo /s" command previously. I foolishly hoped that also all future '*.wbk's would automatically be hidden too. Is there anything that I can do about it without repeating the manual command prompt all the time as suggested in Hide all of a certain file type in a folder tree?

In XP (and Vista), you type alphebets to select a file or folder. For example, you are trying to access a file named "My file.txt", you type "m", "y" and it goes directly to folder or files start withm and y so it's close to My file.txt. This is convenient way to find a file you need. But, it's not the same in Windows 7 anymore. Typing anything will activate the search. It narrows down the files in folder window and it shows many unrelated documents and folders. Is there a way to disable that so I only search by keywords when I press Control-F while typing only takes me to the folder or file?

I have 2 program folders listed as x86 on my 64 bit machine. This 2nd x86 program folder contains games that were downloaded and installed from Big Fish games (and those are the only programs that ever go into that 2nd x86 folder).
Other info (that may be important?): I recently upgraded from Vista to Windows 7. This 2nd 86x program folder was also on my Vista install. I upgraded using the method here to create the windows .old folder process... and that 2nd 86x folder installed into my C drive automatically. (I also used the HP upgrade assistant as directed by HP.
It really drives me crazy that I don't know why I have 2 of these folders. Doesn't seem to cause any issues at all, but wanted to get advice/opinion as to why I have 2 of these and if I'll ever run into issues because of it.

This bug been going on for a while, on my Windows 7 64bit. When I am done downloading anything through torrent (and no, I am talking legit files here), I can't move them to anywhere else, when I chose to cut them out and paste in new location it says it can't move the folder/file because it is open in another program. Only solution I found is to kill and restart explorer.exe, but program comes back after just a couple of minutes. Even if torrent program is closed as well.

Sometimes when I want to move a folder, I receive the following message:
"The action can't be completed because the folder or a file in it is open in another program..."
This is frequently caused by a Thumbs.db file, which I believe generates thumbnail images. Is there a way to prevent Windows from locking these files, so they can be moved, without disabling thumbnails completely as explained above?

I have a computer that is a drone specifically for an outside LED sign. This computer is designed to never shut off and doesn't have any other program on it besides Operating System and the sign software. I need to create a batch file that I can place in the "start-up" folder that will open the program (LEDStudio10) and open the file that I want to play. I have already tried multiple attempts and I was hoping someone out there in sevenforums world would be able to point me in the right direction.

I'm moving from an XP machine to a Windows 7 machine and have transferred my project files (engraving files as well as .bmp). When I try to open a project folder in any of the programs I use it takes 2-3 minutes for it to load all the filesThere are just over 10,000 files in the folder, they are all small files (nothing larger than 100k), and on the XP machine it loads in an instant.I have done everything I can find online (turned off indexing, changed the folder prefs, etc) and nothing works. When I open the folder within Windows it loads in an instant, however when I try to open it within a program is when it dragsDoes anybody have any ideas of what else I can try outside of threatening the computer with physical violence? Also as you can tell by my screen name I'm a mac user that has to use PCs at work.

So I just received a computer I purchased from CyberPower Inc. and set everything up; so far things have gone smoothly except for the following: When I first booted the computer up, and every subsequent startup, I receive the following error message on the homescreen, "There is a file or folder on your computer called 'C:Program' which could cause certain applications to not function correctly. Renaming it to 'C:Program1' would solve this problem. Would you like to rename it now?" If I opt to rename it, then the next startup the message appears again but this time wants me to rename it to "C:Program2". It does seemt to be causing some problems for the way internet explorer functions. I haven't finished setting up the computer/restoring my backups or anything because I don't want to go through that entire process if I am going to need to find the windows installation CD that came with the computer, reinstall the OS, etc.

I have a Dell XPS L511z, with Windows 7 as my main OS. The problem is, literally every 60 seconds the current window loses focus. It makes typing anything hell, since the cursor sometimes jumps to a different position on the page, but mostly just loses focus altogether. I have a feeling the problem is to do with the Optimus setup.

I set about creating a new simple volume on a brand new laptop today. You know - they come with one giant C: drive. We want a nice, manageable C: drive for imaging, about 75 - 80GB, but 100 or 125 would do.Ran up against the "fixed files" limit on shrinking the volume - could only claim 225GB out of 488GB.I'm wondering- could I (temporarily) turn off the page file, delete all restore points and turn off monitoring, and check for and delete any hibernation files - defrag - and gain some significant ground? Or is a third party partitioning program the only option, as Brink has stated in his tutorials?

My problems continue with Win 7's faulty 'file associations' subroutine. Have a friend with a new Toshiba Core i5 on which he has MS Office 2003 Professional fully installed, including PowerPoint. Three weeks ago, he complained that he could not open .pps files attached to e-mails, so he brought the computer to me. I opened the file associations subroutine, found .pps in the list of extensions, and ultimately (tha'ts another whole story) got MS PowerPoint registered as the default program to open such files.Today he claimed he got another e-mail with a .pps attachment, and could not open it, so brought the computer to me again. I don't know why he wasn't able to open it, because I called up the e-mail, clicked the .pps attachment and it opened perfectly. However, I opened the /Default Programs/Set Associations list and scrolled down to see what the .pps entry said was the current default.

On XP there is a facility to add programs to a file type - you can add more than one program, and each one has a name (which appears in the pulldown list), and a program location, which can have options added to it, e.g. an html file could have a browse function, and an edit function (I want to use SeaMonkey with a -compose option, assuming I can do this). I don't want to have to pick one program as the default unless the other one is easily accessible. I'm sure Windows 7 wouldn't kill a very useful XP facility... would they?!

I've created a slideshow file, using FastStone Image Viewer 4.3, and pictures I took myself in our back yard. The file is *.exe and self-executes correctly on my computer. I've scanned it with MSE and it's clean and virus-free.I want to send it to our daughter, using my Hotmail account, as a normal attachment to a normal email msg. But Hotmail blocks it completely since it's an executable file type.So I tried to just rename a copy of it on my hard drive, first, to *.txt. But when I select the *.exe filename and then click Rename, I can't seem to get access to the extension part of the current file name; the exe after the dot. So is there a way I can change the file type in windows from "application" to a type Hotmail so windows won't block as an email attachment? Then tell the recipient to change it back to *.exe on her end?

I have a document that has acquired a .lnk extension and shows a Shortcut type file and I cannot open.I was suggested to go to Sart > Control Panel > Programs > Default Programs > Associate a file type or protrocol with a program > Set Assocations I did that and chose Word to open the document. The result was that almost all programs including IE and Systems Tool tried to open with Word.I had to run a System Restore from the Control Panel and all is fine now. However, can someone give me an idea how the document got the .lnk extension and Shortcut type? Also, is there a solution to this being that the above didn't work?I still cannot open the document and the program associated with .lnk reverted to unknown application.
