Is there some way to inhibit the "auto open" option when the mouse hovers over a file? This is on an Acer portable Win7.

Can't Add A Right Mouse Program Option To The Folder File Type

Oct 10, 2011

In XP when I chose Folder options and then the File types tab, Folder was listed as a file type (Extension=None). I could select it, click the Advanced button and add a program to that file type. I would add the phrase CommandPrompt connected to the program cmd.exe. This then would allow me to right click on a folder and open the DOS window at that location. A big time saver for the work I do. I cannot find how to do this in Windows 7.

Mouse Hover Time - Change

I used the above tutorial to change the Mouse Hover Time in Windows 7. I changed it to 10000 ms via regedit, and restarted explorer. Soon after, it reverts to the normal Hover Time. It seems to revert randomly.

In regedit, the value is still the same.

How To: Mouse Hover Makes Window Active ?

May 7, 2009

what i could not find, though, was information on how to focus on windows by simply hovering over them with the mouse.

Back in XP, you could enable this with Tweak UI, which called it X-mouse.

It was great, i didn't have to click on a window to work in it.

but how to enable this in 7?

OPTION #1

As this article points out, you can switch windows by hovering if you enable it through:

Control Panel> Ease of Access> Change How Your Mouse Works

scroll down, check box "Activate a window by hovering over it with the mouse"

this method raises windows to the front when you hover over them.

OPTION #2

For a true X-mouse experience, you could use this third party software TXMouse:

True X-Mouse Gizmo for Windows

if you are familiar with Linux x-mouse behaviour, you might appreciate its other functions.

OPTION #3

If you don't need those extra functions, you can make a couple swift changes in the registry and achieve the same effect:

Step #1:

Open regedit, go to HKEY_CURRENT_USERControl PanelDesktop

Edit UserPreferenceMask value to be 9F 3E 07 80 12 00 00 00

[You should only have to modify the first pair]

Step #2:

Also in HKEY_CURRENT_USERControl PanelDesktop

Edit ActiveWndTrkTimeout, change 'Base' to Decimal and put in 150 as the 'Value Data'

[this value is time in milliseconds that it takes for the focus to change.

to avoid some issues with the taskbar I recommended using a value like 150 or so,

but if you'd like to have a different delay before the window loses focus, set it to whatever you like.]

Step #3:

Log off and log back in

Information   (Added by John Galt)

Here is the registry key to do that if you don't want to edit the registry yourself. Hover window select.reg

Here is the registry key to restore the default values. Default Windows hover.reg

this results in windows being active (but not being raised) when you hover over them.

Windows 7 Mouse Pointer Hover Activates Link?

May 25, 2011

I have just acquired a Toshiba netbook running Windows 7 Starter. When I allow the mouse pointer to hover on a clickable link, the link activates after a couple of seconds. This is really irritating if I am already where I want to be since I have to be careful where I park the pointer. How can I disable this function? Dannyboy42 asked the same question, and Frank4d suggested that he "go to Control Panel > Ease of Access Center > Make the mouse easer to use. Uncheck the box next to Activate a window by hovering over it with the mouse". Unfortunately, that did not solve dannyboy42's problem, nor does it work for me - that box is already unchecked. Has anyone else figured this out, or is everyone OK with it, and I should just learn to live with this "enhancement"?

Notification Icon Change And Another Auto-select Option?

Nov 12, 2010

the first is during a disk format of a cd-r or dvd-r the OS displays a notification icon for the process until it is complete. My problem here is the system runs in a program that is kept in the forground and there is no access normally for the start bar or windows. During the time that the notification icon is in the task bar though it allows them full access to the start bar. Is there anyway to disable this notification icon for the formatting process? Is there a way to auto select like a flash drive for burning everytime. Ok so found out that during a format, which i did a dvd-r to keep the notifcation open longer that i could then modify the notifications and see that process to hide it and it looks like it stays hidden now to not pop the start bar to the front of the program. So now i just need to find a way to auto select like a flash drive for burning everytime.

Auto-switch Of A 'Razor" Mouse When It Sees Desktop

Apr 18, 2010

I have a Razor mouse ( the Lachesis) which has the ability to store profiles -of polling rates and DPI- and switch these profiles as it sees the desired program. I use two profiles. One is for the "Steam.exe" for my on-line gaming. When I launch Steam, the mouse sees the exe, and switches to this max polling/DPI profile. The other profile is the "Normal" profile which is set at a much slower, less twitchy speed. On XP, I was able to find the Windows "Explorer.exe" in CWindowsSystem32. I set this as my switching exe.and it caused the mouse to switch to the "Normal" profile when it saw the desktop. I can't find the "Explorer.exe" in System32 in Windows 7. Is there no such thing in Windows 7 (Enterprise) or is there another exe. I can use for the same purpose of switching, on seeing the desktop?

Adding Open Command Prompt Option

Aug 30, 2011

I know there's a way to add a "Open command window here" when you click ON a folder... but what I'm curious about is if there's a way to do that if you're IN a folder. It never made sense to me, if I want to run a command-line utility like ffmpeg on a file, to have to go up a folder, click that option, then enter the folder again. I know MS Office Groove added an option there, so theoretically couldn't there also be one for command prompt? I know if you right-click on the desktop while holding Shift, the option shows up, but ONLY on the desktop.

I like to use "FYzip" to open all types of zip files/folders as it works well with my expectations but I can't get it or even a photograph to have a default opening program. Can't Open A Shared File On A Windows 7 Machine If It's Already Open On An XP?

Jan 23, 2012

I have a small network of six computers. Five of them run XP and I just added a Windows 7 machine. I've got a Microsoft Access 2003 database that all of the computers share that is hosted on one of the XP machines. The Windows 7 machine can access the Access database through the network just fine, as long as no one else is accessing it. However, if someone else on an XP machine on the network is using the file, it won't open on the Windows 7 machine. Doubling clicking the file on Windows 7 gives me the circling blue icon for a second or two, then nothing happens. If the XP user exits the database, then I can open it fine.
