View 7 RepliesI bought new hp laptop.. it came with 500 GB harddisk, windows 7 home basic, I didn't get any windows cd apart from recovery in hard disk. My windows is installed in c: and that is the only drive that it have... now the situation..
1) I want to partition my harddisk without losing windows means I don't want to format C: drive
2) I also want to install linux in dual mode with windows..
Second question is related to first one because I don't need any method that may lead to situation like I can't install any other operating system.
I had installed ubuntu 10.10 on my lap Dell N5010 model recently, After few days i got blue screen error message then i decided to format my hard disk, with a windows 7 ultimate version which i got through internet. then i thought to format the system completely so while installing i went to advanced disk options and deleted all drives when i did this the drive which has name primary is detected after installation. the drivers which are under category of logical are not getting displayed in my computer and also in partition manager it is showing as unusable space.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm in a bit of a pickle here. My CD drive won't allow me to boot from CDs anymore, for whatever reason. I have 2 partitions on my hard drive and I'm wondering if it's possible to format the main partition by copying the windows setup files to my secondary and then somehow running them from there, whilst wiping the main one. I really don't want to reinstall without formatting, but right now I have no other option.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI reinstalled windows, and went with AHCI for eSata hot swap. 2 of my 6 drives did not appear in my computer. 1 of them I just assigned a drive letter in DM and it is fine. The other, which was previously working, says it requires initialization, which I did, and assigned a drive letter. I stopped short of performing a format ( to preserve the data) but it is listed as raw and inaccessible.
I am not sure what to do now as I have a raw drive that I cannot access...which a few hours ago had several hundred gigabytes of data. The drive in question is a 1tb seagate 7200.11. The other thing I did was move the drive from a jmicron controller to an intel controller on the MB. All 6 drives are now on the intel controller sata ports.
when i try to format my Cd's or DVDs it will say windows was unable to complete the format what can i do

View 2 Replies View RelatedWhen I open disk defragmenter it doesn't list my C drive -- which is the primary internal HD on which the OS, windows 7 64 bit, is installed. I have another partition that came with my computer (Dell Studio XPS) on which Dell has some a backup recovery image on, and this drive 'Recovery (D' _does_ show up. Just the 'OS (C' drive does not -- which happens to be the drive I'd like to defrag.I haven't tried any other defrag programs yet. I'm the administrator user on this computer if that's relevent. Also, if I go to properties on my C drive via my computer and click defrag from there, it'll open disk defragmenter and still just list the D drive.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI've used the Win 7 built in Disk Defragmenter since day one. Noticed about two months ago that it is not checking C:. It checks the other included drives (an external HDD and a Recovery drive) on schedule. I have tried unchecking and rechecking and changing scheduled times all to no avail. As a workaround I manually analyze the drive...when I remember.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a WD Green drive which parks its heads after 8 seconds of inactivity. This is measured by "load/unload cycle count" in SMART, and WD rates the drive for 300,000 cycles. I have accumulated over 15,000 in the span of a few days, which obviously isn't good for drive longevity. I don't have a way to run the tool provided by WD to alter the timeout for the heads, so I need to figure out what is causing this frequent disk access. Prior to whenever this started (I'm assuming it was a few days ago, when I installed a new motherboard) I was averaging 0-10 load/unload cycles per day, depending on how often I accessed the drive.I checked activity with Resource Monitor and found nothing accessing the drive except for the very occasional access of BCD.log and the MFT. However, I'm seeing ~3-6 load/unload cycles per minute, so something is accessing the drive every 8-20 seconds.
I tried using procmon. I set it to filter only for activity on E: (the drive in question) and I unchecked all the default "exclude" filters; I saw nothing besides procmon accessing the drive. I ran it for a good 5 minutes. The drive is connected to an Intel Z68 SATA II controller. I have no other drives which park their heads so I don't know if this activity occurs on all my drives or not. Again, nothing shows in procmon or Resource monitor. What can I do to see what's accessing the drive?Tried so far:Disabling SuperfetchDisabling AV
Disabling Indexing
Today I booted up my computer and got a screen saying something went seriously wrong with my computer and that I should repair it from an installation disk. I load up windows onto a USB, boot it and click the repair option. It's been about half an hour and nothing has shown up. Is it still loading or perhaps something is very wrong with my PC?
View 2 Replies View Relatedmy sister has Sony Vaio E-Series which runs windows 7 Home edition. She encountered a problem starting up the windows and decided to use Recovery Disk, Recovery Disk stopped working and needs additional source (disk) to run. She weren't successful so decided to stop recovery and run it again. After that the error "BOOTMGR is missing" appeared! When I put the recovery disk inside the machine it doesn't work. F8 and F4 keys also don't work. So I can't use the similar solution mentioned on the internet like running "system restore". She also doesnt have Windows 7 installation disc to run.

View 7 Replies View RelatedMy friend wiped my friend's computer on a Vista installer by choosing "load drivers" or something in the partition screen and then pressing format. I can't find this anywhere, or what I mean is there are no drivers to load. When I try to format, I can only format so that my computer saves a Windows.old file. Does that get rid of viruses? Does it get rid of a slow computer?
