For the past six months or so I've had the problem of having my active window deselect itself many time during a session...as often as every ten seconds or so. I have Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit installed on a Dell Xps 15z-i7.I have read most of the windows forum suggestions on this topic, and none have work for more than a week or two. I have run ARO software checks and Advanced System Care 6 Pro.
View 7 RepliesI could hold down the Fn key, a large black bar with symbols in it would drop down from the top edge of the screen, I never paid much attention to what was in that, but then I would hit the Prtsc button. Then when I pasted it into Paint, it was ONLY the active window.Now when I hit the Fn key, the black bar does not drop down and when I hit the Prtsc button the entire screen is copied, not just the active window. View 15 Replies View Relatedin vista if I used my media keyboard to open a program it would open but now, whilst browsing with firefox and im listening to media monkey and its on the taskbar in vista I could press the media player button on my keyboard and it would bring media monkey to the front, same if i press calc button now all they do is flash on the taskbar till I hover and click them
can I bring this back somehow is this meant to be happening?
If I have 2 or more windows open (Windows Explorer or any other application), the most active window always seems to switch to the right on the task bar in the grouping order, is there any way to stop this? I keep having to relaunch to keeping the keep the applications in the order I want on the task bar. Quit assuming I want the most active window on the right Windows! I Don't!
View 3 Replies View RelatedI seem to have a problem with my computer deselecting my active window and normally i wouldn't care but it happens like every minute or so. i can't even type this without interruption. i've looked at my processes in task manager, and the only difference i see is that it will have svchost and windows error reporting activate for a few seconds before going away again. this leads me to believe i have a problem except it doesn't tell me what said problem is. i have looked at similar threads, but i haven't found a solution that worked. the only action that i've tried is turning off the error reporting except that just replaces the deactivating window with a constant notification that host process has stopped working and i need to close the program.

I am frequently running multiple tasks at once, and having a dialogue box pop up and move the focus of my cursor while typing a sql script or email is extremely aggravating. what i could not find, though, was information on how to focus on windows by simply hovering over them with the mouse.
Back in XP, you could enable this with Tweak UI, which called it X-mouse.
It was great, i didn't have to click on a window to work in it.
but how to enable this in 7?

As this article points out, you can switch windows by hovering if you enable it through:
Control Panel> Ease of Access> Change How Your Mouse Works
scroll down, check box "Activate a window by hovering over it with the mouse"
this method raises windows to the front when you hover over them.

if you are familiar with Linux x-mouse behaviour, you might appreciate its other functions.

If you don't need those extra functions, you can make a couple swift changes in the registry and achieve the same effect:
Step #1:

this results in windows being active (but not being raised) when you hover over them.
I am working in an office that uses dual screens to view stocks and things. When the users hit PrtSc, the system prints BOTH screens. I thought there was a hotkey that allows printing of the "active" screen only. The users are not in a position to paste things to the clipboard or snip. They just need a quick print of their ACTIVE screen.

I have two hard drives, C and D. I had Windows 7 installed on both at one point. Now, I only have Windows 7 installed on C. However, it still comes up asking which installation it wishes me to boot on startup.
I was getting annoyed by this, so I followed a guide that told me how to stop it, by unticking the "Wait 30 seconds before selecting" option.
Now, however, on booting, Windows automatically selects the WRONG installation, which gives me a 0xc000000f error with device inaccessible. I need to get into my C: version of windows to retick that box until I can figure out how to get rid of the menu the correct way.
Booting from disk to repair doesn't do anything, I've tried repairing both installations but it didn't help.
i am having trouble repairing the error. i have tried all the bootrec commands etc nothing is working do not really want to reinstall as it has important files on it . problem occured after wife installed some software that worked fine on her old xp system

The problem is when using a program (such as Freestar AMR MP3 Converter) I cannot select multiple files at once. This can make using the program extremely tedious and time-consuming if there are large numbers of files to convert. It is not just this one program that does it, because other programs also fail to allow me to select multiple files. Again, I must state that this only seems to happen when using certain programs and not generally in Windows 7. Also, a small unrelated question: how do I get out of 'Libraries' view in My Documents and basically disable the Libraries view permanently, and just have it normal like in all earlier versions of Windows?

Well I had a motherboard failure when it just stopped working (Thi it had something to do with reading the ram as it stopped seeing my 2 sticks as duel channel before it outright stopped working.Right now I got a few days before I can buy my hardware, I was going to get an FX6100 hex core, but after reading about it a bit more I figured it might be better to go with a AMD Phenom II X4 975 Black Edition.I am really not sure what I should get and could use some advice. I figured out the ram and motherboard I will get, but with what I seen I have no idea what to do about the CPU anymore.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI am having problems with slow scrolling while selecting down. If I go to the bottom and select up it works as expected (selects and scrolls quickly) but when I select down it doesn't. It seems to be isolated to my user. I logged in to my local guest account to verify this. selecting while scrolling worked as expected in my guest user account. the 2 user accounts do have different applications in them. I'm at a loss for why I can't select quickly while scrolling down. By the way, simply scrolling works fine in any direction. the problem only presents itself when I try to select and scroll down; then it slows down to a snails pace, only slower. The only thing I can think to do is to do a clean install by re-formating and reinstalling everything. It doesn't seem like there are any settings that can address this and it seems to happen in any application on this user. I would prefer not to migrate to a new user nor do a clean install but I'll do it, only as a last resort. I'll try to boot into safe mode to see if that helps but at this point, I don't think it will. I don't want to have to boot to safe mode every time i want to use my computer.

Recently there has been this problem with my computer, where whenever I am in the middle of something it would be as if "someone" would click to my desktop but my window, or game would stay open and mouse cursor would be in the same position. Even typing this paragraph is hard because it keeps deselecting the the browser. It would pause, minimize, or window all my games, and stop my typing until I clicked on the screen to continue whatever I am doing.
What I have done: updating all drivers, searching online, different mouse and keyboard. What I have not done: virus scan, installing recent windows update, re install windows 7.
The only way it get fixed is when I shut down my computer and turn it on. It stops for a while then it occurs every so often, and then it does it every 30 seconds. It has not done this until a day ago when my computer crashed during windows updates, and then my hard drive got messed up, until I unplugged it for a minute, then it started up and finished the updates.
I also have another problem after the crash and ill give a little info on it, or post in another thread. Randomly both my monitors will turn off as if it is going into sleep mode every time I move my mouse, and it is similar to the problem above. It will also project audio as it goes black and then turn back on.
Whenever I search in Windows 7, I want to have the ability to open found folders in a new window. If I r-click, that option is not there. Is there a way to add this to Windows 7?
Also: When I go to 'open file location', the file's folder opens in the same window - highly annoying. In Vista, it opens in a new window. Anyway to change this behvior in Windows 7 to act like Vista, so the file opens in a new window?
I am running into an issue where I can open a window/program with my mouse however once the window is open I cannot click inside of it. The window becomes inactive. I also have noticed I cannot right click on my desktop to bring up the properties. I can right click on the window in the task bar to close it but not in the window. Since this is happening I am limited to command prompt. I ran sfc /scannow with no errors. I tried with 3 different mice. I booted the computer into safe mode with command prompt and brought up the device manager to show devices not in use, and when the device manager window opened I could click inside it! since I could use the window I uninstalled all mouse drivers, and reinstalled my microsoft wireless usb mouse driver.. while in this safe mode I changed my mouse properties to system default as I read somewhere that can reset things. Next I booted the computer in safe mode (without command prompt) and still the same thing. I was trying to do a restore point as well however my Kaspersky antivirus 2012 is preventing that as i cannot find a way to kill the program through command prompt.

Or if I drag too fast, the entire selection gets unselected. I also noticed that when I double click on a word or sentence, the whole word or sentence gets selected. If I drag veeery slowly downwards from left to right, I can manage to select a little more text than I would have if I did it at the normal speed

However, I am adding more computers to the network and would like to select as to which computers can see a particular folder. The problem is that when I am trying to set the permissions and go to "Locations," the only computer listed is mine, even though the "Network" folder clearly lists three other computers. How can I get these computers to also appear in "Locations" so I can choose which ones to share my files with? Ideally I am trying to create a new user group that will consist of preselected computers.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a notebook running Windows 7 Professional, and it's set to back up via network to an external drive which is connected to a desktop running Home Premium.
On the notebook, when I'm selecting the backup target, it lets me choose a specific folder on the external drive. However, when I'm backing up the desktop directly to the external drive, the only choice is the root of the external drive.
I'd like to specify a folder into which the desktop can back up instead. Can this be done, or am I going to have to pop for another Professional anytime upgrade?
Sleep definitely shuts the computer down. No matter what I do in Power Options, when selecting Sleep, computer is definitely off. How can I be so sure? Well, in the past when Sleep was working, there would always be a blinking blue light emanating from the computer's on/off button and when bring back from Sleep all I would have to do is tap any key or left click my mouse and without any hassle, open programs would come back. However, now when selecting Sleep, no blinking blue light, no awakening when tapping keys or left clicking mouse. To open computer I have to depress the on/off button and when the computer comes to life there is that Windows Error Recovery screen and when Firefox is opened, I'm told that it crashed and if I wanted to restore stuff.The results of a Hibernate shut down are quite different and look to be normal. No blinking on/off light, but have to depress this button to get things started. Screen says Resuming Windows instead of Starting Windows as it did when using Sleep, there is no Windows Error screen, and I'm not asked to my user password. Also, Firefox opens without any "crash" alert.
I guess i can live with using Hibernate, but it is a real PITA compared to Sleep and I would much prefer to get to the bottom of this so that I can use Sleep.Took the bull by the horns and entered BIOS and went to Power Management Setup. S1/S3 were all enabled for mouse, keyboard and USB, there was no S2. Suspend Mode was set to [S3 (STR)]. There was an option to set it to S1 (POS)], which I did, and then finished booting. I then set all my Power Options (within the Control Panel) to their defaults, backed out to the desktop screen, clicked my mouse button to bring up closing choices and selected Sleep. And, Sleep it was!
1. What are the meanings of SRT and POS and why did this work?
2. As Sleep was working for about 4 years, what could have caused things to change in the BIOS...here I am assuming that the BIOS setting was originally S1???
