I have already setup a network between Windows 7 x64 Ultimate machines. However, I am adding more computers to the network and would like to select as to which computers can see a particular folder. The problem is that when I am trying to set the permissions and go to "Locations," the only computer listed is mine, even though the "Network" folder clearly lists three other computers. How can I get these computers to also appear in "Locations" so I can choose which ones to share my files with? Ideally I am trying to create a new user group that will consist of preselected computers.
is there any way to position a series of windows on the desktop screen, which will remain there in the size you have set and precise position etc?E.G i have msi afterburner, GPUZ and coretemp which all start up and overlap each other etc, would be great if it was set in its spot upon windows start-up so i wouldn't have to reposition each window every time i start up my p
On the laptop, i now want to share a folder with the desktop, but only for the desktop, not for the whole homegroup, nor the whole network. They are both in the same homegroup, as well as some other computers.
As the accounts are the same I added the user 'alex' in the advanced sharing-options with full control. But it ditn't work, so I googled and also added full control for the user alex in the security options. But if I want to acces the folder from the desktop, I still get "no permissions". I, resp the user alex have/has admin-rights on both machines.Did I miss something?
I noticed that in the advanced settings of both sharing and security I can always just choose the local machine as a "location"... got this something to do with my problem?
I just built a Jerry-rigged light weight storage computer so I don't have to leave my dev/game comp/volcano on all the time anymore. I also bought a laptop recently as well. What I'd like to do is make the data (on two logical drives to be specific) completely accessible with full privileges to the laptop and this main PC however there are other users on the network that I don't want to share everything with (but still some).I can use PC Anywhere for some things but the end result I'm looking for is a handy couple of links on my desktop to the two raid drives and carry on as though they were still on my comp (and laptop now too), but also not include all users at the same time. (but also have the option to set up sharing for the folders they need access in too)Is this within the capacity of Windows 7? All computers have Win 7 and belong to the same home group.
My hard drive contains a single partition covering the entire drive. I decided to divide the drive into two equal partitions using Computer Management/Storage/Disk Management. I learned that one or more unmovable files was located above the midpoint of the disk.Next I learned that if I know the location of the cluster or clusters I could copy these files to an external drive, reduce the existing partition and establish a new partition. At this time, I threw up my hands. I don't know the location(s) or how to find the locations. Can I actually accomplish my purpose within Windows or should I use a third-party partitioning utility?
got this after installing adaware 10 , put in theyre fix , nogo , seemd explorer.exe isnt loading into normal windows , safemode with networking is fine although i had to add explorer.exe to services , any idea how to get explorer to run after the password screen in normal mode, i've tried everything i have read online to no avail , this lil net book is looking like a great target at this point lol.
I've been getting the BSOD since 2010...usually occurs when accessing video or photos at mainstream sites like SI.com or FOX etc...intermittently...I've attached the CPU-Z, RAM-MON and the SF Diagnostics dump files.
I have Windows 7 Pro and I connect my laptop to many different customer networks. It does a nice job identifying the network and setting a default printer etc. However...
I have one customer with 15 cellular routers that I maintain. Each of them has a static LAN IP with DHCP turned off. As soon as I manually set the static IP Windows Identifies the network and I'm good. Then when I done I need to manually set the static IP back to DHCP. Is there any way for Windows to switch to a static IP that I assign when I plug into these routers?
or
Is there some third party software (free would be nice) that can do that?
My old IBM laptop had some software that did exactly that. I think it was called Access connections.
I've noticed in the last month or so that any open windows keep deselecting. This problem was much worse when I was having problems with McAfee, and seemed to stop once I solved those. However I have noticed that it is still occurring, just not as often. This happens in Chrome and in Windows.

I'm working on Family Tree Maker, collecting photos from family, scanning them, saving, putting in FTM as I have time. Only, I'm missing some photos (and other documents) that I know I had.
I did a full back-up of my hard drive months ago, and I've been going through each back-up file looking for the photos and documents and slowly finding them in random locations, one at a time, but this is very time-consuming.
Before the problem I bought a new laptop and just hard the hard drive copied from my tower to the laptop. (Love the laptop, BTW!) I took the laptop back to the store to get my new wireless printer working. When I brought the laptop home I found a lot of games and programs were missing. Fortunately I was able to restore them from disks or if downloaded the sites allowed me to download them again. I called the store and told them the problem, suggesting maybe someone besides their tech has access to the computers in for repair, and they denied it and gave me the brush off. (BTW, I'm not going to do anymore business with them!)
I also use Picasa to add captions and descriptor words and I've been using that to look for items, but when something is found each one has to be checked against my laptops current folders to see if it's missing or not.
Is there an easier way to do find my missing stuff? How did my photos and documents get moved randomly?
I went thru this with Vista, don't remember what the solution was..when search for a file by typing file name (or partial file-name (or extension)) in search field in folder window.. the results don't tell you where the files arewhat is the purpose of a search functionality if results don't display file-locations???I think in Vista I was able to tell it what cols to display in results (and I think there was one that displayed locations.. why it doesn't default to this I cannot fathom, but well...;-) but don't see how to do this in Win7
How to I change the default save location of any saved file from C drive to D drive? How to delete current user and program folders on my C drive? Info:I am trying to tidy up my computer and need some assistance with default save locations.I have 2 drives, A 60gb SSD (c:drive) and 1TB standard HDD (d drive). I have my OS on the C drive. I currently have 12gigs of information between two default folders named programs and user. Also when I download, files automatically go to c drive/users/andrew, I get no say in the choice, I want all files going to D drive. All I want to do is remove them from my C drive and have the default locations for any file saved to be to the D drive. This is because I only want select programs, i.e the ones I use regularly to be be on the much faster SSD c drive.[CODE]
I have an HP Pavilion s3700f desktop, Windows 7 Home Premium OS, 64bit. I used to be able to move items to DOCUMENTS and/or DESKTOP by right-clicking the item with mouse, but now those locations have been replaced with Compressed (zipped)folder for some reason. I can't figure out how to get back my DOCUMENTS and DESKTOP locations.
I'm new to Windows 7, I was bought the OS for Christmas (Pro 64bit) and it's fantastic apart from one thing. I play rFactor (v1.25) and it works perfectly, installed no problem, full compatability and other than the file location of program files (x86) instead of program files on XP for the addons & patches I have had no problems... Until I went to set up my player profile and install my track setups. I don't exist! But rFactor finds the player profile of Chris when in game but no such folder on hard drive and no joy searching either. Is there a "secret" location Windows 7 sets up. I am set as the administrator, it allows me to move files onto main drive, but this is beginning to grate now.
I have a win 7 ultimate x64 box. I used to run XP. I loaded fresh on new drives, and installed the OS, some office and utils on drive C: as normal. I have 2 more drives, D: and E:, that I have installed about a terabyte of games/simulators on. I have installed these on both drives under program files folder. During install and setup of the OS, I turned off UAC because it was taking way to long to answer all the prompts to make sure this is what I wanted to do. So after done installing everything a week later, I flip UAC back on. Now I can't run anything without UAC kicking in and it does mess up some of my programs.
Should I just turn UAC off and leave it or do a reinstall, and put all my games on drive D and E in a folder called Games or something like that to prevent UAC from wearing me out. Other possibilities I was thinking of is renaming D: program files to d: games and do the same on drive E:, then find eplace anything in the registry from D: program files to D: games, do the same for E:. Would that work or would I wind up hosing my install?
I've been having a problem recently where some programs open up on the side of the screen, and I can't drag them over because I can't move my mouse there. It's been happening ever since I installed a custom skin. I uninstalled it and it still happens. The programs affected are Notepad and LogMeIn Hamachi.
I just purchased a new desktop computer system.I am using Windows 7.I'm trying to think how to describe this so that it makes sense.I am the only person who uses this computer. The staff member who transferred my data from my damaged computer to the new one apparently gave the computer my full first name and then gave my "nickname" the Admin role. Now I appear to have two My pictures and my documents in the library. My photos are scattered between the two My Pictures. When I save something to my pictures it doesn't end up where I expect it to be. It could be in either My Pictures. Not sure if that makes any sense at all to you ... I don't want two sets of pictures and two sets of documents. When I save a picture I want it to go to the same place every time unless I designate it somewhere else. Before I start deleting/moving anything I need to understand why my pictujres are going to one area sometimes and sometimes the other.
I am having a problem with my Toshiba NB505 Netbook - running Windows 7 Starter. I can connect fine at home to wifi- and also at my local public library. However I was unable to connect at a motel I was at recently and had the same problem when I visited a different local library. To be more exact, I was able to connect ok at these 2 locations - but there was no internet access. From reading, I suspect a 'DNS' issue of some sort, but I don't know how to go about remedying it.
I am running Windows 7 64-bit on my main PC. I also have a fileserver running Fedora 9/Samba that houses all our documents, video, music, and pictures. I have mapped network drives to these locations. I have no issues at all accessing the remote shares, either through UNC path, or through the networked drives.
When I go to the indexing configuration, the mapped drives do not appear as a target to pick for indexing. Also, I can't add these folders to the respective library folders, because I get an error indicating that the location is not indexed. So I'm hoping that if I can index these locations, I can then add them to my library.
Using W7 home premium SP1. Everything is up to date, not running any virtual desktop, just a few widget type apps on my second display.
Sometimes when I do a restart or cold boot, some of my shortcuts have changed locations on the screen and I have to move them back to where I want them. I've never experienced this before until recently and I am looking for assistance on what is causing this.
Well I had a motherboard failure when it just stopped working (Thi it had something to do with reading the ram as it stopped seeing my 2 sticks as duel channel before it outright stopped working.Right now I got a few days before I can buy my hardware, I was going to get an FX6100 hex core, but after reading about it a bit more I figured it might be better to go with a AMD Phenom II X4 975 Black Edition.I am really not sure what I should get and could use some advice. I figured out the ram and motherboard I will get, but with what I seen I have no idea what to do about the CPU anymore.
[code]...
So any advice on a decent CPU that will not break the bank. I was trying to stay around $300 for the three parts I am getting so Intell is pretty much out of the question (besides I like AMD)
How do I remove 2 options that are in the boot selection, they are both windows 7, but i had removed the files, and they no longer work. I am Running windows 7 currently.
I am having problems with slow scrolling while selecting down. If I go to the bottom and select up it works as expected (selects and scrolls quickly) but when I select down it doesn't. It seems to be isolated to my user. I logged in to my local guest account to verify this. selecting while scrolling worked as expected in my guest user account. the 2 user accounts do have different applications in them. I'm at a loss for why I can't select quickly while scrolling down. By the way, simply scrolling works fine in any direction. the problem only presents itself when I try to select and scroll down; then it slows down to a snails pace, only slower. The only thing I can think to do is to do a clean install by re-formating and reinstalling everything. It doesn't seem like there are any settings that can address this and it seems to happen in any application on this user. I would prefer not to migrate to a new user nor do a clean install but I'll do it, only as a last resort. I'll try to boot into safe mode to see if that helps but at this point, I don't think it will. I don't want to have to boot to safe mode every time i want to use my computer.
I am new here so go easy on me, and this problem is hard to describe. Recently there has been this problem with my computer, where whenever I am in the middle of something it would be as if "someone" would click to my desktop but my window, or game would stay open and mouse cursor would be in the same position. Even typing this paragraph is hard because it keeps deselecting the the browser. It would pause, minimize, or window all my games, and stop my typing until I clicked on the screen to continue whatever I am doing.
What I have done: updating all drivers, searching online, different mouse and keyboard. What I have not done: virus scan, installing recent windows update, re install windows 7.
The only way it get fixed is when I shut down my computer and turn it on. It stops for a while then it occurs every so often, and then it does it every 30 seconds. It has not done this until a day ago when my computer crashed during windows updates, and then my hard drive got messed up, until I unplugged it for a minute, then it started up and finished the updates.
I also have another problem after the crash and ill give a little info on it, or post in another thread. Randomly both my monitors will turn off as if it is going into sleep mode every time I move my mouse, and it is similar to the problem above. It will also project audio as it goes black and then turn back on.
my aunt restored 2 deleted files from the recycle bin but she claimed she couldn't find them in the original location where they were deleted. She couldn't quiet recall the names of the files except that they were .pptx files.
I have a number of PCs connecting to a server where we house our personal folders. The server also houses music, basketball games, our photos, applications (like drivers and updates etc). On XP and vista I could update shell folders in registry to point each of the various locations (Like My Videos, My Documents, My Pictures etc), to a location on the server.
I updated the shell folder locations in registry only to find that it says location is unsupported because the network locations are not indexed
I have turned indexing off because it is a total waste of resources. We have everything stored on separate drives by category of item. For us, sedarching is not required, stuff is easy to find.
So how can I point the shell folders to a network location without turning on indexing?
I found a file named Index Locations under Searches in Windows 7. I thought it was rather long, so I deleted a section prior to January 2013. A box came up saying French could not be ????? but could be deleted permanently. clicked YES. Then I noticed that the number of icons on my desktop (where I keep most of my folders and files) appeared to have shrunk.Have I lost any folders and files and is there any way to retrieve them ??
For the past six months or so I've had the problem of having my active window deselect itself many time during a session...as often as every ten seconds or so. I have Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit installed on a Dell Xps 15z-i7.I have read most of the windows forum suggestions on this topic, and none have work for more than a week or two. I have run ARO software checks and Advanced System Care 6 Pro.
I had no problems with windows or anything, everything was fine, until this morning when i started computer and in Google Chrome marking text became nightmare, either it isnt marked at all, or it just mark last couple of letters on last word...sometimes even pressing back or forward button isnt recognized, or any other button on browser btw when i booted win this mornin' i got updated flash player. And then i tried to mark text in windows= SAME THING.
