Selecting Sleep Shuts Down Computer
Apr 17, 2012
Sleep definitely shuts the computer down. No matter what I do in Power Options, when selecting Sleep, computer is definitely off. How can I be so sure? Well, in the past when Sleep was working, there would always be a blinking blue light emanating from the computer's on/off button and when bring back from Sleep all I would have to do is tap any key or left click my mouse and without any hassle, open programs would come back. However, now when selecting Sleep, no blinking blue light, no awakening when tapping keys or left clicking mouse. To open computer I have to depress the on/off button and when the computer comes to life there is that Windows Error Recovery screen and when Firefox is opened, I'm told that it crashed and if I wanted to restore stuff. The results of a Hibernate shut down are quite different and look to be normal. No blinking on/off light, but have to depress this button to get things started. Screen says Resuming Windows instead of Starting Windows as it did when using Sleep, there is no Windows Error screen, and I'm not asked to my user password. Also, Firefox opens without any "crash" alert.
I guess i can live with using Hibernate, but it is a real PITA compared to Sleep and I would much prefer to get to the bottom of this so that I can use Sleep.Took the bull by the horns and entered BIOS and went to Power Management Setup. S1/S3 were all enabled for mouse, keyboard and USB, there was no S2. Suspend Mode was set to [S3 (STR)]. There was an option to set it to S1 (POS)], which I did, and then finished booting. I then set all my Power Options (within the Control Panel) to their defaults, backed out to the desktop screen, clicked my mouse button to bring up closing choices and selected Sleep. And, Sleep it was!
1. What are the meanings of SRT and POS and why did this work?
2. As Sleep was working for about 4 years, what could have caused things to change in the BIOS...here I am assuming that the BIOS setting was originally S1???

The problem started when I clicked on an image in google images. The computer shutdown immediatly and when I restarted it I got the notice that it had shutdown badly and options of starting in safe mode or normally. I started it normally and system repair ran. I finally got it started and everything seemed fine until I left it in sleep mode. When I came back it had shutdown and I had the same problem starting it. This has happened several times. If I shut it down and restart it is fine. I have System Mechanics Pro and scanned for malware and found none. Now when I search on google I am being redirected to other websites every third or fourth time.

all of a sudden my PC running 7 Pro 64 has started shutting down rather than sleeping. i have made no changes in terms of updates/software/drivers, so i cant think of any reason this should happen. it happens when left long enough for the sleep timer to cut in, or by going to sleep through the start menu.

Occasionally, in the past when the the PC would sleep it would not wake up when I pressed the keyboard and had to be restarted instead. Over the last week the problem has occured more frequently. Today it happened every time the PC went to sleep and was not woken up within a few minutes. I have never made any adjustments to my power setting in Windows or the BIOS. I am using a balanced power scheme.[CODE]

I am using Windows 7 64bit Ultimate. My laptop, when going into Sleep, 1 out of say 7 times shuts down instead. Windows says it crashed and gives me some error logs. I am attaching the DMP file of the last one. I remember going to PERFORMANCE INFO & TOOLS > ADVANCED and it saying that a video drive may be to blame. I removed the video driver and let Windows update the driver itself. Am wondering if it somehow is still using that driver?

I am new here so go easy on me, and this problem is hard to describe. Recently there has been this problem with my computer, where whenever I am in the middle of something it would be as if "someone" would click to my desktop but my window, or game would stay open and mouse cursor would be in the same position. Even typing this paragraph is hard because it keeps deselecting the the browser. It would pause, minimize, or window all my games, and stop my typing until I clicked on the screen to continue whatever I am doing.
What I have done: updating all drivers, searching online, different mouse and keyboard. What I have not done: virus scan, installing recent windows update, re install windows 7.
The only way it get fixed is when I shut down my computer and turn it on. It stops for a while then it occurs every so often, and then it does it every 30 seconds. It has not done this until a day ago when my computer crashed during windows updates, and then my hard drive got messed up, until I unplugged it for a minute, then it started up and finished the updates.
I also have another problem after the crash and ill give a little info on it, or post in another thread. Randomly both my monitors will turn off as if it is going into sleep mode every time I move my mouse, and it is similar to the problem above. It will also project audio as it goes black and then turn back on.

EDIT: the problem has returned and the previous solution doesn't work anymore. Uploading new .ZIP file in OP and last reply.
I have been searching the Internet a bit to find a solution to this issue. Mostly this has been linked to specific programs (like iTunes), which I don't have. Someone said it might be BSOD so I did the procedure.
Basically, my laptop doesn't go to Sleep, but instead freezes. This happens when closing the lid, pressing the "power" button or doing manual Sleep from Start menu. The screen goes black, but won't "wake up" anymore - the only way out is a forced shutdown and restart. If the laptop is in this freezed state long enough it will shut itself down automatically. The machine is 2 months old with pre-installed Windows.

Whenever I press the sleep button on my computer, or when I leave it idle and it goes to sleep by itself, I get a blue screen of death. I would really like to solve thiNow, this computer came with an AMD video card, but I uninstalled those drivers and took out the video card and installed a GTX 570 from EVGA. The drivers are up to date, so I am pretty sure the new hardware is installed correctly. Furthermore, it was not doing this for the first few months of having the video card installed. This is very recent, so I don't understand what it could be

Having problems with the Sleep, Restart, and Shut Down functions after struggling trying to get a defective external disk drive enclosure to work. When I use any of the above functions the computer shuts down. I cannot wake by moving or left clicking the mouse as before. The computer shuts down and will not come on with the front panel power button. Ditto for Restart. I have to pull the power cord for about a minute before reconnecting. Then I press the power button and the computer commences to boot and windows initializes very slowlyI restored the computer to an earlier time before using the defective external drive enclosure, but I still have the same powerup/boot symptoms. stonooka has chosen the best answer to his/her question.Click here to view the answer that was selected.

I have 2 computers here. One is a E-Machines, and the other is a custom built. Both units as soon as you power them on, they go thru the boot up process, but anywhere from 2 to 10 seconds later, the unit turns off. I've tried swapping the ram and the power supply. I have disconnected the keyboard, monitor, mouse and speakers with no change. Both of them developed this problem over night. They do not stay booted up long enough to get into the setup or to even try booting from a DVD.

For the past month or so, my laptop has been randomly shutting down with no warning whatsoever. It doesn't even restart, it just completely turns off. I can be doing anything and it will happen.
At first I thought it was overheating but then I installed SpeedFan and it's still doing it (and I can tell from feeling under the computer that it's no longer overheating).
I've run virus scan after virus scan (Malwarebyetes and Microsoft Security Essentials) but it's not finding anything wrong with my computer.

My computer repeatedly shuts down on me. Yesterday it must have shut down on me 20 times. My virus and malware scans come out clean. It usually goes to a menu asking me if I want to start the computer normally or in safe mode. However sometimes, I have to run start-up repair and sometimes I get a blue screen. The problem is the blue screen doesn't stay up long enough for me to write down error codes or anything else it says.

My new computer shuts down completely when playing DirectX games like COD and Crysis. First I thought it was a heating problem but I ruled that out when I kept the case open and monitored the temperatures. It can also happen within the first minute of a game, but it could happen at a later stage as well. There's no real pattern.
My system specs are:
Windows 7 RTM x64
AMD Phenom 9550 Quadcore Black Edition
4GB DDR2 memory
Gigabyte M61PME-S2P with the F4 Bios (latest)
Gigabyte GV-N250 (Geforce 250GTS with 1GB of memory
Latest drivers from Nvidia installed.

I just got an HDMI over cat5 extender (HDMI from computer --> wall plate --> cat5 --> wall plate --> HDMI --> Receiver), got it? I plug the HDMI cable into the laptop and it turns off... immediately, like I pulled the battery and power out.
I connected the computer directly (HDMI from computer --> Receiver) and it worked just fine.
I connected my PS3 through HDMI-->cat5 and it worked fine too.
I've updated the ATI drivers, downloaded the new catalyst center for windows 7. Anyone got any ideas?

my computer is shutting down periodically. This just started today, and it has happened twice now. What noticed when I rebooted was that the CPU temperature was at 90C. Now I know that isn't safe, so I am assuming that the overheating is causing the PC to shut down. Is that a correct assessment? So I opened my case up and layed it on the hard floor. CPU temp according to two different utilities (Core Temp and Speccy) is fluctuating between 24C and 25C. Everything seems very stable now.I ran Avast, but nothing came up. I also made sure that all of the fans are operating, and they are. PSU fan, CPU, etc are all running.

Whilst installing Windows 7, my computer will get to the "Expanding Files" part, and it will shut down at around 27-31% every time.
- All of my drivers are up to date.
- I have a brand new PSU and an HDD in my computer.
- I have ran multiple stress test programs to find a flaw in my build, nothing.
I'm at a loss here.

I just recently completely wiped my laptop (restored to factory condition) and reinstalled everything because it wouldn't shut down on it's own. It's been working wonderfully with one exception. Now, if it's left unattended for too long it will shut itself down. I suppose it could be a good thing, and I don't necessarily think anything is wrong it's just very annoying because I leave it on sometimes to download something or another and then I'll come back hours later and it shut down. Is there any way I can fix/change this so it doesn't do that? I'd rather shut it down myself. It's a PC, has Windows 7 Home Premium and is a 64-bit.
