recently my PC has been shutting down, as in a forced shut down, when left, rather than sleeping.i cant find anything in settings that would cause this, has anyone else experienced, and fixed, this issue before? im running 64bit 7 pro.

The computer shutdown immediatly and when I restarted it I got the notice that it had shutdown badly and options of starting in safe mode or normally. I started it normally and system repair ran. I finally got it started and everything seemed fine until I left it in sleep mode. When I came back it had shutdown and I had the same problem starting it. This has happened several times. If I shut it down and restart it is fine. I have System Mechanics Pro and scanned for malware and found none. Now when I search on google I am being redirected to other websites every third or fourth time.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI am using Windows 7 64bit Ultimate. My laptop, when going into Sleep, 1 out of say 7 times shuts down instead. Windows says it crashed and gives me some error logs. I am attaching the DMP file of the last one. I remember going to PERFORMANCE INFO & TOOLS > ADVANCED and it saying that a video drive may be to blame. I removed the video driver and let Windows update the driver itself. Am wondering if it somehow is still using that driver?

I have been searching the Internet a bit to find a solution to this issue. Mostly this has been linked to specific programs (like iTunes), which I don't have. Someone said it might be BSOD so I did the procedure.
Basically, my laptop doesn't go to Sleep, but instead freezes. This happens when closing the lid, pressing the "power" button or doing manual Sleep from Start menu. The screen goes black, but won't "wake up" anymore - the only way out is a forced shutdown and restart. If the laptop is in this freezed state long enough it will shut itself down automatically. The machine is 2 months old with pre-installed Windows.
Sleep definitely shuts the computer down. No matter what I do in Power Options, when selecting Sleep, computer is definitely off. How can I be so sure? Well, in the past when Sleep was working, there would always be a blinking blue light emanating from the computer's on/off button and when bring back from Sleep all I would have to do is tap any key or left click my mouse and without any hassle, open programs would come back. However, now when selecting Sleep, no blinking blue light, no awakening when tapping keys or left clicking mouse. To open computer I have to depress the on/off button and when the computer comes to life there is that Windows Error Recovery screen and when Firefox is opened, I'm told that it crashed and if I wanted to restore stuff.The results of a Hibernate shut down are quite different and look to be normal. No blinking on/off light, but have to depress this button to get things started. Screen says Resuming Windows instead of Starting Windows as it did when using Sleep, there is no Windows Error screen, and I'm not asked to my user password. Also, Firefox opens without any "crash" alert.
I guess i can live with using Hibernate, but it is a real PITA compared to Sleep and I would much prefer to get to the bottom of this so that I can use Sleep.Took the bull by the horns and entered BIOS and went to Power Management Setup. S1/S3 were all enabled for mouse, keyboard and USB, there was no S2. Suspend Mode was set to [S3 (STR)]. There was an option to set it to S1 (POS)], which I did, and then finished booting. I then set all my Power Options (within the Control Panel) to their defaults, backed out to the desktop screen, clicked my mouse button to bring up closing choices and selected Sleep. And, Sleep it was!
1. What are the meanings of SRT and POS and why did this work?
2. As Sleep was working for about 4 years, what could have caused things to change in the BIOS...here I am assuming that the BIOS setting was originally S1???

wreaks havoc with my Norton full system scan. It is scheduled weekly, but never does it, because my computer is on, but sleeping. How can I get the scan to not stop during sleep mode or scan if it's in sleep mode? I having to constantly unsleep my computer or change my control panel settings then change it back.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI own a gateway notebook as my secondary machine but since I sold my workhorse it should be my main machine this week before I buy a couple new macs and transfer this buddy to my mom, as of this morning I tried to wipe off the ATI HD3200 driver and update it as the scaling options were not showing up but after I got the old driver off I tried rebooting the system and started to have problems, now I can only boot in safe mode and it shuts down abruptly after some time (does not come back up if I don't press the power button), I used driver sweeper to get rid of the old driver.

From time to time Windows 7 will not go to sleep (only the display will turn off). Requesting Service Spooler Opening task manager, I see a process running called "splwow64.exe" -- is this the spooler preventing the computer from sleeping?
I have Win 7 RC Ultimate 64 bit for a while. Works great. The only problem so far is that it will not stay in "sleep" mode(not the hybernation). It goes there, the light on the box is blinking and after about 10 sec it wakes up. Can't figure out what wakes it up though. I dual boot on the same machine to Vista Home Prem 32 bit and it goes to sleep fine and stays there. So, I don't think it is hardware.

I would set it and a little time forward and the machine would be started again. Today I was reading some additional suggestions. It said it may be a slide show. I don't have any slide shows set up but after some thinking I decided to turn off the Windows Personalization desktop theme that I had on my computer. I chose to have them rotate some beautiful desktop themes every 10 seconds. Once I turned off all but one of the themes, I have not had any additional problems with my computer staying in sleep mode. I like the various desktop background changing but I also like the ability to use sleep mode.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have just purchased a Cyber Power Pure Sine Wave UPS and it is working great except for one exception. Whether or not I use the included software, after my computer wakes up from sleep mode, windows cannot communicate with the UPS.
With the included PowerPanel software, the PC still things the device is charging if I cut the power after sleep mode. Without the software, windows reports that the battery is plugged in, not charging.
Since the UPS is connected via USB, I have tried disabling "USB selective suspend" in power options, as well as unchecking "allow windows to put device to sleep" for all USB ports in device manager.
Every time my dell laptop is in sleep mode for a while - and there is still plenty of battery left it seems to "resume windows" and it's like a startup. Shouldn't it just ask for my password and be there right away?

When I press a key or move the mouse, the computer apparently wakes up but the monitor is still black and the PC speaker is gives off a three beep pattern. After a cold reboot, the system/win7 does not restart, but rather resumes the task I was doing prior to the sleeping mode. One more thing, does cold rebooting affect ssd's the same way as normal hd's?

I have an SSD now and liked how smoothly the computer would resume from the default sleep mode power settings that came with win7, so for the first time I've actually been using them on my desktop. However, since installing sp1, sleep no longer seems to work. When I woke up this morning and when i came home from work, the computer was not in sleep mode. Normally I expect to see the power button flashing, and in neither case it was. When I start the computer it asks me how i want to enter windows, just like it does normally if windows crashes. Everything else on my computer is working as expected.

My laptop is just under 12 months old and other than the battery dying already I have never really had any problems until last week. Its a Dell Inspiron 1564, Intel I3 running windows 7 home premium.After my computer has been woken from sleep mode any window I open in full size no longer sits flush with the top of the monitor (its about a cm below top of screen), but my desktop background is still normal and reaching the top of the monitor and I can put my cursor up there. I have updated my video and BIOS drivers from the Dell website yesterday but that doesnt seem to have done anything. These last two seem to have been triggered by a power flicker at my residence. The power momentarily flickered long enough for my computer to shut down. After booting the computer seems fine until approx 5-10 min later it will enter sleep mode no matter what I am actively doing on the pc. I fixed the second time with a restoration to two days before the incident. This time I restored to that same point and it still has the problem. Power settings are on high performance with sleep and hibernate set to never.

I have been using sleep mode for a while. Until recently, I had to re-install my OS due to some troubleshooting and hardware issues. Now my PC won't wake up from sleep mode with the new install. She goes to sleep, and when I try to wake her up, she powers on, for like 2 seconds and then shuts off. I have to turn on the power switch to get it to boot. My pc is not a generic brand pc. It's a custom built water cooled pc. I haven't noticed any new driver installs. I have performed a clean start up with no insight to what the issue could be. Event viewer only shows what I expected.

I am using a Lenovo Thinkpad running Windows 7 Ultimate x32 to operate an astronomical observatory. This requires running a range of software simultaneously. On several occassions, my computer has gone into sleep mode and will not respond to waking requiring a hard shutdown and reboot. This introduces a host of registry errors and stops any astrophotography. I have looked into Event Viewer and all I get is the following entry:
