Windows 7 Upgrade Failure - No Automatic Rollback Continuous Loop For Setup?

May 11, 2011

Went through the recommendations for upgrading to windows 7 as per instructions on CD. Anything incompatible was removed, uninstalled prior to set-up. On first run through set-up failed, BUT, this was easily rolled back. Not so easy the second time round where there was no option to roll back. On rebooting I could not access any of the software programmes on the pc. Instead I was taken straight to the command screen:

X:$WINDOWS.~BTWindowssystem32>

The only access I have to all my directories is via this screen.I did attempt to a system restore but was asked to identify which system to restore and was unable to do that as I am not very technical.I can, by hitting F8 get to the advanced boot menu, but none of the options listed there function. When selected they take me back to the command screen. If I exit the command screen the pc reboots. Is there any way I can get to restore my previous o/s Vista and then hopefully I can get to do a clean install of windows 7? it currently looks like I am running two opeating systems and windows.

Windows 7 Starter Getting Error On Initial Setup; Locked In Setup Loop?

Oct 5, 2011

one of the netbooks was plugged in to initially power it up, but then hard-shut-down before Windows could run through its initial setup. Now when I boot up the netbook, and it attempts to go through the initial windows setup "Setup is starting services", and then throws an error message: The computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error. Windows installation cannot proceed. To install Windows, click "OK" to restart the computer, and then restart the installation.I restart, and the cycle continues. This happens whether I try to boot normally or in safe modeI've got no CD-drive attached to it, so I'm not sure what I can do to break this error cycle.

Windows 7 Automatic Reboot, Or Power Failure?

Jun 18, 2011

Ok, so I left my PC on last night while it was installing some Windows 7 (x64) updates, via Windows Update. I came back to it this morning at it looks like it had rebooted.I have the PC set for "install updates automatically" (the default setting) I believe this will reboot the PC at around 3am.1) Is there a way to check that the PC rebooted via Windows Update, as opposed to a power bump/outage?2) Would a power bump during Windows Update corrupt Windows 7 somehow? I checked Windows Update and it looks like there are no FAILED updates.

Resume From Sleep Failure - Power-up Loop?

Apr 8, 2012

Have a Windows 7 PC working fine for 6 months, now fails to resume from sleep every time. On attempting to resume the PC appears to go through a powering up loop (Hard disk and fan spin up) which then goes off and repeats indefinitely till you force the power off by holding town power button. When changing 'allow hybrid sleep' in Power Settings to disable; it cured it for a few days. The issue came back, so tried enabling this setting - same result. Disabled again, same result.Update Intel Graphics Drivers to latest. Fixed the issue again, just for a few days.

Setup Starting Services Loop - No Repair Or Installation Disk

Feb 8, 2012

My laptop Specs below:
Acer Aspire 5742
Intel i5-480M
6GB DDR3
Intel Graphics

It started when I needed to take the computer back to factory default with a fresh install. It was going back to Acer to have the charger point fixed (charger socket had become loose but still charged when it was held in). I used the control panel interface to reinstall windows, all was going well until the laptop power died, I restarted the laptop and the screen displayed:

"Setup is starting Services" a pop up box then appeared with "The computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error. Windows installation cannot proceed. To install Windows, click "OK" to restart the computer and then restart installation."

I have searched around the net and found a few guides but most require a repair disc or Installation disk. I have neither. Is there any way of starting the install again? For example from Command Prompt?

"On the same error screen press SHIFT+F10 and it will open up a black Window. (a command prompt window) 2) In the black windows type the word "regedit"(without the inverted commas and hit enter. That will open the registry editor. In the Registry Editor.. Browse to.... HKLocal machine/SYSTEM/SETUP/STATUS/ChildCompletion, and after highliting childcompletion,on the right hand side check for setup.exe. if the value is 1 change it to 3.(by double clicking on setup.exe and changing the value shown in the box). Then close the registry editor and then also close the black window. Then click on OK for the error and the computer will restart and the installation may complete. just try it and let me know if it worked."

I tried the above and rebooted, I still get the dreaded "Setup is starting services" loop

Windows Auto Boot Into Windows Setup Loop

Mar 28, 2012

Yesterday I've reinstalled windows on my laptop, the only 'problem' was that on booting, the system lets you choose between windows 7 and windows xp setup. Windows xp setup was the default choice. Now when I was done installing windows 7, I wanted to get rid of the win xp setup boot option. In my control panel, I deselected the option for the boot selection screen where you can set the time. Now my pc got stuck in some kind of boot loop where it only boots into win xp setup. I don't know how to resolve this because the only option I have on booting is entering the bios... when I press f12 it should go to boot options, but it just goes automaticly to win xp setup.

Failure While Setup Is In Progress - Booting From Partition

Jul 6, 2012

I have a Dell Inspiron laptop that got a virus on it. I tried to fix the virus but was just not able to and every time I turned the computer on it would get an error message and ask if I wanted to start windows normally, once in a while I would get a BSOD and it would reset itself. I don't remember what the error messages were because I kinda ignored the problem for a couple months and finally got around to saving what I needed and trying to do a reset. Everything went fine when I went into Dells Datasafe Restore. After it wiped the drive and re-installed I got past the Dell screen at startup and on to the windows screen then suddenly got a flash of a BSOD then the computer restarted. I went through the startup repair and got the message Failure while setup is in progress. I've been searching for a solution for a few hours now and I haven't found one. I don't have a recovery disk (I was just trying to use the partition) and I don't have a windows 7 cd. Where do I go from here?

IE9 is successfully removed but 8 does not come back. I cannot find a standalone installer for IE8 for Windows 7 either. An upgrade install of Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 x32 fixes this issue, but since it is an upgrade, I can no longer sysprep. Being able to sysprep is a requirement. Therefore, I cannot do an upgrade install.

VISTA Upgrade To Win7 Problem - Failure

Nov 29, 2009

I have some major problems with upgrading Windows Vista, that I could not find any discussion about.

Here is the deal - I have a customer, that had Windows Vista (Slovenian, Home Premium) and bought Windows 7 for upgrade (also Slovenian, Ultimate). Naturally we ran the upgrade adviser and it checked out just fine - it did complain about some Power DVD program but I ignored that since I have upgraded before by others without problem.

So the upgrade process began, it ran almost to the end when it suddenly, just before the end, resulted in error that said something about "unspecified or unknown error" and the installation should be ran again (and can not be continued). We tried to reboot without any luck - installation just keeps resuming - ending with the same error, also, it is impossible to run the upgrade again - because another one is in progress, I guess.

So I ask - how to finish the upgrade or, if able, to revert back to Vista - my customer NEEDS working system - he has many programs that are vital for his business and/or business continual. I know that he should back up his important files and such, but there are some accounting databases that could not be backed up so easily by him - and we are past that point now.

Upgrade 7000 -> 7057: Setup Keeps Rebooting

Mar 20, 2009

I tried installing the upgrade build 7057 over 7000 (x86) and it seemed to work fine. But then Windows 7 boots into the message "preparing your desktop for first use". It follows the message "Setup will continue after restarting your computer" and after ca. 1 Minute it restarts and does exactly the same. I tried that for about 5 times and it keeps doing that. No error messages.

Did anybody have this problem as well? Any ideas for troubleshooting?

Addition: I have just seen that people have problems with Norton 360, which I have installed, too. Maybe I can boot into safemode and remove Norton - I will try this tonight and report.

Continuous BSOD's Even After New Windows 7 Install Onto New SSD?

Jun 15, 2012

It's been a long time since I've been on this website, think it was over some Windows live junk, but chea. So I'm not really sure what is causing the issue, I was lead to believe my old SSD was giving out on me along with perhaps a mishap with an update to newer drivers of ATI 5xxx HD graphic cards. But alas after trying to do what i could, i eventually gave up noticing i was running low on SSD space from my 60GB and reinstalled onto a 120GB after getting fed up with the BSOD's on that. So, i moved onto the next, got it all up and running, but it seems something is wrong with it as well and i can't exactly pinpoint it and i've forgotten how to read memory dumps correctly so here I am again at this great community to fix this thing again( As for issues i've run into, seems like playing League of Legends will result in a BSOD here and there while in game, sometimes just browsing on firefox 13 here and there results in my computer starting to freeze up and going black with a rare glimpse of my desktop or things on it before going black again with the mouse unresponsive, etc.

Windows 7 Won't Start - Continuous Reboot Cycle

Dec 10, 2011

Here's the visual procedure my PC goes through after pressing the power button:

- POST screen
- Checking-for-bootable-drives screen
- Windows logo screen
- White text reading 'autochk not found - skipping autocheck' on an otherwise blank, black screen
- VERY brief flash of what looks like the same blue as a BSOD with very few words right at the top
- Automatic restart
- Back to the POST screen, etc, etc, etc...

I can still happily boot into the Windows 7 CD and GParted (they're the only bootable discs I have). If you will, please take the time to read my final post (the other posts may be useful aswell) on this thread, as it contains useful information on what caused the cycle (and what I have already tried) and has some screenshots (this thread is more of a continuation of the aformentioned one).

I get a dialogue box saying installation failed and would continue after restart.I have tried using a system recovery disc, and get the same issues. I have tried to get it to boot in safe mode, last known good, and get the same error and restart cycle. Memory tests show no issues and I am at my last wit because there were important documents and photos I can't ever get back. I do have a backup drive but it was a few hundred gigs too small, and so I couldn't backup everything I need

Ok computer has been doing scandsks for the last week all of a sudden when starting up and now it splashes the boot screen and hangs on the black screen with a blinking cursor at the top left.

heres what i have done so far:

1-booted from windows cd and did STARTUP REPAIR, it found my windows installation and finished without no problems - PROBLEM STILL EXISTS

2-command propmpt and fixboot command unsuccessful since it stays on x: dir and i cant find the c: dir for the right commands

3-SYSTEM RESTORE found no earlier restore points which i found odd but it is what it is.. lol..

4- went ahead and tried installation of windows to see if it recognized my drive on array and it did with the correct size and data.

I tried installing the regrun reanimator to see if it maybe was a root kit problem but the boot up disk didnt recognize my c drive either.

Starts In Windows 7 Boot Manager And LOUD Continuous Beep Sounds?

Dec 26, 2011

I just got a beautiful new laptop for Christmas (HP Pavilion g7 1260ca). Every time I start it up, it starts in "Windows Boot Manager" and makes me select Windows 7 as my operating system. That's annoying in it's self (why won't it just start on it's own! It's not like I'm running another operation system as well!) but what's even worse, as the text is appearing on the screen, a loud obnoxious beep sounds with each word that appears! I checked to make sure no keys are stuck, so it's not that. Once I choose Windows 7, I'm able to sign in with no problem.

Continuous PC Shut Down

Jun 13, 2012

I'm running on a Windows 7 32 bit system, self built. Before I go into explain all of the details, here are my computer specs..My computer has been crashing a lot recently. It never use to happen, it just started within the past month or so. It's not a BSOD, there's no error, no warning.. Just black. When I start up, it's like nothing ever happened. But it's really annoying, whenever I begin to render a video, it crashes almost every time. It also stopped a few times while I was trying to play games and record, but I have recorded in the past. My computer use to be at it's prime but I don't know what changed. I could really use some advice to fix this. Any suggestions would help, I'm really wanting to render up all the footage I have.I do a lot of video game recording on my PC, I use the program bandicam. Also, my PC doesn't seem to be suffering from overheating, as the hard drive stays cool when it crashes.I keep about 50gb free space open on my computer to avoid extra errors.

Continuous BSOD After Login?

Feb 15, 2012

Everytime I start the computer in the normal way I get a bsod about 1-2 seconds after the desktop appears (after I log in) and the system crashes. When I then start the computer in the safe mode it does not instantly give me another bsod, but even in the safe mode I have gotten a bsod. I actually downloaded the exe file from the posting guide and while running that for the first time it actually crashed in safe mode again.

I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit.Its the original OS.It is not an OEM version I think.. I did not order this computer, it was done for me. I'm pretty sure its retail, but at the moment I can not ask this to the person who ordered the computer for me.The computer is tomorrow 1 week old. (yes I managed to crash it in a week)The OS was installed 7-8 days ago, I'm not sure of that but its more then 7 days and less then 14 days for sure. Can ask if its important, but again not at this moment? When trying to do the system health report as stated in the guide (perfmon /report), it gives me a viewer stating that the system cannot find the path.
