why is it that whenever I have an automatic upgrade scan-it never removes itself from the safe mode when finished and Inlocks my desktop icons by removed the check marks for align icons to grid, auto align and changes the size of my icons.

View 0 Replies View RelatedWent through the recommendations for upgrading to windows 7 as per instructions on CD. Anything incompatible was removed, uninstalled prior to set-up. On first run through set-up failed, BUT, this was easily rolled back. Not so easy the second time round where there was no option to roll back. On rebooting I could not access any of the software programmes on the pc. Instead I was taken straight to the command screen:
X:$WINDOWS.~BTWindowssystem32>
The only access I have to all my directories is via this screen.I did attempt to a system restore but was asked to identify which system to restore and was unable to do that as I am not very technical.I can, by hitting F8 get to the advanced boot menu, but none of the options listed there function. When selected they take me back to the command screen. If I exit the command screen the pc reboots.Is there any way I can get to restore my previous o/s Vista and then hopefully I can get to do a clean install of windows 7? it currently looks like I am running two opeating systems and windows.
I am about to reformat my system and reinstall all programs and settings etc.. One question I have is around the registry tweak to add a "Take Ownership" icon to the right click contect menu.I generally install this tweak as it's extremely useful and saves messing around with calcs commands. It seems however that once this is done in Windows 7 RTM 64 it replaces the icon to run as administrator (which is also extremely useful).Is there a way to keep both icons/features in the context menu?

View 6 Replies View RelatedWindows 7 Ultimate x64 Intel 510 SSD I am having a problem where Windows 7 re-installations keep eating up large amounts of space on the drive.
The first time I had to re-install the OS I did a "clean re-install" and found I was using 6 more GB than before. I shrugged it off as temporary files and I'm not sure if the space ever returned.
The second time (today) I did a "repair install" and found I was using 8 more GB after than I was before. I've used CCleaner but it's only finding a few hundred MB of data to delete.
My "Windows" directory is 16.5GB
There is a folder called "System Volume Information" with files all created today that is 7.9GB I'm going to guess this is where that space has gone?
I have a base image, where I have configured the default profile using the administrator account. I created user ids, but did not log into these idsI used Local Group Policy to edit the policy of one non administrator ids I created. After sysprepping the computer, and successfully copying the profiles, the user is not configured with the group policy settings.Same deal as this guy Sysprep deletes Local Group Policy but his question was never answered.

So I ran the sfc /scannow. The CBS.log shows the errors that couldn't be fixed. Is there anyone that can help me fix the errors?Because I did an anytime upgrade doing a clean install is going to be a real pain and I am hoping with the log that I can attempt a fix rather than doing a clean install or system repair which both will require hours of doing. On the new computer with Windows 7, the generic HP PSC 1200 driver that is part of Windows 7 will not scan to pdf. It does the bmp, jpg, tiff, and png. And not multi page. Any way to get back the pdf capability without having to buy acrobat? I legally had the ability before the "upgrade".

I love how when I uninstall a driver/device in XP, on reboot it pops up asking me what to do. Vista and 7 on the other hand, take it upon themselves to reinstall Microsoft drivers on reboot no matter what I do.
I've searched online and yielded no results, and searched here and didn't find anything either (Key words yield many results). Ideally I would prefer Vista/7 to just IGNORE the new device, so I can install the new one/update it myself. But if that can't be done, I'd at least like to be able to STOP the automatic driver installation.
Theres gotta be some way, even if I have to edit something or add registry keys, I just want to stop the automatic microsoft driver installation.
Cannot find Automatic Log On on Windows 7 to uncheck it so machine will automatically go into desktop. We are on a network, but was able to do this on XP, but I have looked at all the discussions, printed them out and I just do not get that automatic at the top of the users tab that says Users must enter a user name and...and user is also Administrator.

Few days ago my user account started to automatically logon. Before that I didn't have password, but I had to click on my username to start. I didn't change anything, or at least I didn't intentionally. When I go to netplwiz, option "users must enter a user name and password to use this computer" is checked, so I don't no what else should I do to disable automatic logon.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have RC 7100x64 connected (per cat cable) to a wireless router. Windows 7 created a home network. Router is perfectly fine and my 2 laptops automatically login into the internet. In the beginning my despktop also jsut was able to be online after booting up.
At some point (I did all updates, installed all my software) the PC does not connect to the internet anymore. Tehonly way to get online is to:
- open Network Center
- leftclick "Connections: local area connection" --> disable
- go to trouble shoot problems
- then it finds " the local area network adapter is disabled"
- I click " fix it" and it will work.

How can I make it connect automatically (as it did before)? I set all services I could think of to " automatic" (IP Helper etc.). From researching I read that XP had a similar problem with SP3. not sure if it is related, but coudl an update be at fault?
Everything is up to date, Kasperksy keeps viruses away, I did not do one of the registry-cleaner tools.
Since it worked at first, one of my isntallations or updates must have done it. I also did some of the "service optimizations" from here bu tundid all of them to resolve my problem.
One could say I should isntall a newer built, but first I just want to use it before I buy the real deal in October. Second, it used to work with RC 7100 and going through all the trouble reinstalling is a hassle.
Everything else works well.
I am wondering is there a way to have an automatic boot process run?Example: I work and get home at around 5:30-6:00 PM, I would like my PC to boot at 5:00 PM.If there is a way to do it great, if there isnt, no great loss.

On vista when I plugged in the hdmi cable the audio and video would automatically go through the tv and back through the pc when unplugged (video would be displayed on both when plugged in). Now since I installed windows 7 only the video goes through automatically and the audio stays on the pc speakers unless i manually change the tv speakers to default in the control panel. How do I set it up to change automatically like it did in vista?

XBMC has some great wiki's on how to do this, but all of them assume you want XBMC to boot as a shell and not boot explorer. In the future I may want to do this, but right now I am still in the design/set up stage and want explorer to run so I can go back and forth between it and XBMC.My problem is arriving when Eventghost tries to launch XBMC. I need to provide permission for it to run under an admin to make changes to my pc.I want to grant this automatically.I know I can lower my security settings for all programs, but I don't want to do that. I just want to allow XBMC to launch with admin permissions.I already have the "run as administer" box checked.My security is set to high so it still asks me. How can I change this so that XBMC will launch with admin permissions without having to grant it each time yet retain the security settings I have?
