Installing Windows 7 Removes Several GB Of Additional Space Each Time
Jan 5, 2013
Windows 7 Ultimate x64 Intel 510 SSD I am having a problem where Windows 7 re-installations keep eating up large amounts of space on the drive.
The first time I had to re-install the OS I did a "clean re-install" and found I was using 6 more GB than before. I shrugged it off as temporary files and I'm not sure if the space ever returned.
The second time (today) I did a "repair install" and found I was using 8 more GB after than I was before. I've used CCleaner but it's only finding a few hundred MB of data to delete.
My "Windows" directory is 16.5GB
There is a folder called "System Volume Information" with files all created today that is 7.9GB I'm going to guess this is where that space has gone?

When I try to install windows 7 I get to the point where you have to select which drive/partition you want to install it on. This is when the installation hits a brick wall. I had recently backed up and reformatted a 270GB partition of my HDD and decided to use that to install my windows 7 on it. The problem is that when I try to install it on that partition it says that I don't have enought space even though it has 270GB free. I've tried running the setup from windows xp and from the disc via reboot.

I'm rebuilding my desktop PC with a fresh installation of Windows 7 x64.Upon first boot after installation, 3 updates automatically installed. After a reboot, I was informed that over 100 additional recommended updates (and quite a few optional updates) were ready to be installed.I chose to install all of the recommended and optional updates (except for the 39 international updates).During the Windows Update installation process, a Microsoft Mouse and Keyboard Center installation window appeared. When the progress bar got to about 75%, however, the following error dialog appeared underneath: Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime LibraryThis application has requested the Runtime to terminate in an unusual way Presumably, the installation of the Microsoft Mouse and Keyboard Center (and perhaps other items) failed to install; upon pressing the OK button, I was informed that 51 updates succeeded and 75 failed. Codes 800706BE 800706BA were mentioned.Upon reboot, another batch of updates (75?) installed; then the PC rebooted twice. At this point, Windows 7 appears to be completely installed and up to date. There are no new items in Windows Updates. However, the Microsoft Mouse and Keyboard Center is nowhere to be found; I was able to download the installer and successfully install the product.

I am about to reformat my system and reinstall all programs and settings etc.. One question I have is around the registry tweak to add a "Take Ownership" icon to the right click contect menu.I generally install this tweak as it's extremely useful and saves messing around with calcs commands. It seems however that once this is done in Windows 7 RTM 64 it replaces the icon to run as administrator (which is also extremely useful). Is there a way to keep both icons/features in the context menu?

I have a Samsung 700Z5B-W01 new laptop. I was trying to do an install of Ubuntu alongside my Windows 7 but when I tried to do this, it just created 100 GB worth of unallocated space that I can't do anything with and it also made it to where my C: drive is only 50 MB's now.

I have a Dell 8400 and a few questions about upgrading to Win 7 64 bit. (I am a complete NoOb when it comes to installing an OS).
First my specs are...
CPU Type
Intel Pentium 4 HT 630, 3000 MHz (15 x 200)
Instruction Setx86, x86-64, MMX, SSE, SSE2, SSE3
L1 Trace Cache12K Instructions
[Code]....
I will have 2GB of this RAM Thursday with another 2GB of the same RAM the following week or the week after that. Corsair Dominator DDR2 Ram Memory PC-6400 800 MHZ [URL] After the RAM I will be getting a new Graphics Card. Also I have a spare 650 watt PSU if needed.
I ran the Window upgrade advisor and the only things it flagged was (of course) that I only had 512MB of RAM and outlook express. It did say custom installation required, whatever that means.
1. My first question to everyone is, can my Dell even run Windows 7 64-bit?
I googled around and it seems possible.
2. My second question is can I install it with the 512MB of RAM I have now?
3. My last question is can I install this along side XP on my HD?
4. My third question is does anyone know of a good very detailed step by step Noob guide for installing it next to XP?
I have never installed an OS before and if it does not work I am screwed!
I do know it is better to do a fresh install and no I cannot by another HD right now, I know they are cheap but I will be scraping together all I have just for the RAM and Graphics card.
My problem is that, I really only have the time to do this over the long weekend and cannot wait for the RAM to get here.
The guy on e-bay is a clown and did not ship it when he was supposed to and it will not be here in time.
I just need it up and running and can add the RAM as it comes but I am under a serious time constraint and if I don't get this done now over the Memorial day weekend it will be a long time before I have enough time to do this.

i own Garrysmod, a steam source-mod. It is a game that grows dynamically as I connect to server's, download addons, and receive mandatory game updates. The game file has exceeded 50Gb before. After getting infected with "Windows 7 Antivirus Pro" and making (I freely admit it, and I REALLY should have known better) a terrible mistake and breaking all .exe's while removing the infection, I was forced to re-install windows. However, for whatever reason (another stupid mistake) I re-installed windows on the wrong hard-drive. So now my C: drive is only 150 Gb, and my backup (both of them) are 1TB.I do not have the space to have garrysmod on my C: drive, which is where steam is installed (Last time I tried installing it somewhere else it would not work.)Now that the background information is done lets move on to what you can help me with!
I have been looking for a way to install garrysmod on another hard-drive without reinstalling steam and trying to get it to work on another hard-drive. I believe I have found one, but I am really a coward when it comes to this sort of thing, (I HATE re-formatting) the solution I have found apparently tells the computer that the directory/file is on C: when it is actually on another hard-drive, but I found it in an old forum thread, and the member that had posted it was banned.

I have a HP laptop with a Vista Home Premium 64 bit on it now that came with no recovery disc from HP like on all DV2 laptops from HP.
So question is if I order the upgrade W 7 Home Premium preorder and install it on my laptop it should be no problem the first time even with out recovery disc since Vista will be on the harddrive. But if I do a second clean format reinstall say a year later (after the first upgrade install) to freshen up my laptop, will there be a problem installing Windows 7 the second time since I have no recovery disc of Vista to put in the DVD as proof?

I tried to install windows 7 home premium SP1 (kb976932) 5 times already. Each time, after the installation was finished, I was asked to restart the computer. After I've restarted, windows started running and then the screen just went black and the computer stopped responding. I had to go to the last restoration point, which cancelled the installation. What to do?

I have a HT Omega Claro sound card that I've been having problems with. One issue that I have is after I uninstall the driver and try to reinstall it. It takes several attempts to install successfully.
Does this mean that the sound card is fualty? I'm not sure exactly how a driver works but i'm thinking it would try to comunicate with the hardware it's intended for and if there is a problem with the hardware that might cause the driver to have a dificult time installing.

I am wondering if it's possible to use a remote windows machine as an additional monitor for another Windows Machine. The reason I ask is rather simple, I have a Windows 7 Tablet, and at times would like to be able to optimize my work area with my laptop by using the tablet as extra display area. I know it's possible for Android and iOS, but is it at all possible for Windows 7? Even without the touchscreen capability, the extra display area would facilitate immeasurably.

the stellar customer service at Dell I have had to recently reinstall windows 7. I was running windows 7 prior to this installation and therefore those files have been moved to windows old. How do I reinstall this file? I'm assuming the process is the same as for other versions but being as I'm not that technically savvy I don't know how to change the command scripts to suit my situation.

Currently I'm using Comodo Internet Security as a firewall and I'm planning to build a home network using Windows 7 Homegroup and thought that Comodo might be an obstacle in doing that.
So my question is, as a normal home user of Windows 7, do I really need a 3rd party firewall other than Windows 7's firewall?

I had no problem installing my venerable HP LaserJet 4100DTN as a shared network printer in Win 7 Pro 64. However, when checking install additional drivers for 32 bit windows, 7 would not accept the PCL 6 inf, downloaded from HP, which is the same driver version that has been installed on my 32 bit XP Pro PC's. Also tried PCL 5, with same result. Message is the selected driver isn't appropriate for the selected architecture.

My setup: Windows 7 Ultimate x64 on ThinkPad T510. 1HD, two partitions (C and D).I just reinstalled my system and encrypted C; however, there is absolutely no option to encrypt D. I've tried accessing the drive from admin account and still nothing. When I open BitLocker management, it only lists partition C and not D.Here is some additional information that might or might not matter: I tried to restore my Windows 7 from an Acronis image and it was unsuccessful. Tried it twice and during booting POST showed two different W7s installed, which was incorrect. When I finally installed Windows 7 from scratch, the extra W7s were still appearing before startup and I had to use EasyBCD to remove them. Now when I am trying to backup partition C, Acronis says that my System Reserved Partition (SRP) is on partition D. My hunch is that Acronis messed up my drive D when I was trying to restore my C partition. Then when I did a fresh Windows 7 install, the SRP incorrectly ended up in D and since SRP cannot be encrypted, that means that my entire drive D cant be encrypted either. I am dreading about going through formatting my 750GB HD and installing Windows 7 and encrypting it yet again. I read somewhere that you can use software like Acronis Disk Manager to move the SRP to drive C, but I am not sure how this will work because when I open the native winodws Disk Management, I dont see SRP there.

Windows 7 64bit Retail version, installed about 6 months
I built the computer for my wife, and was awaiting some items to come into stock, so I had only 4gb of ripjaw ram when first installed everything, and everything ran perfectly.
I got my second lot of ram an additional 4gb of ripjaw ram, same model and mhz rating, however once installed BSOD appeared time and time again, I couldn't track down the problem, I ran mem tests, and came back that there was some errors, I took all 4 sticks back and had them replaced, one set was exchanged on the spot the other took about 2 months, so cruising along on 4gb of ram again, and all is well, receive my additional sticks, and within 2 minutes of loging in, BSOD...
The Motherboard has 4 slots, and is compatable with this ram, the slots are colour coded, blue and white (from memory) and the pairs are in the own colours, pair 1 in the blue slots (1 & 3 slots) and pair 2 are in the white slots (2 & 4 slots), once i pull the additional ram out, back to normal.
